Ask about the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)-the federally funded program that helps eligible low-income people meet home heating needs. Call (866) 674-6327 or see www.acf. hhs.gov/programs/liheap/grantees/states.html. 3. Get information about the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). Most state and local governments get federal funds to help low-income families reduce energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. The services are provided by nonprofit agencies that employ energy professionals. They thoroughly analyze energy systems, make minor repairs and check for hazards. Find WAP at (877) 337-3463 and www.eere.energy.gov/weatherization/state_contacts.cfm. 4. Your gas, water and electricity suppliers may offer a monthly budget plan. They may also have special heating assistance funds, as well as “no cutoff” guidelines for older adults, people with disabilities and ill customers. 5. Cut down on energy use. The EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program offers energy-saving tips at (888) 782-7937 and www.energystar.gov. In addition, you can: • Seal air leaks. Weather-strip and insulate to prevent warm air from leaking out of the house. Replace screens with storm windows. • Use a programmable thermostat to lower the heat by 8° F when you’re

Seven Things To Do Before The Year Ends

efore the year is done, it may be wise to take stock of your life and your family’s to make sure you’ve done all you should.

Registration is not only required by law, it’s necessary for many college loans and grants and jobs with many state and municipal governments as well as government contractors. Some places even require it for a driver’s license. Fortunately, it’s easy to do. Many students can register at their high school. In addition, “mail-back” registration forms are available at any post office or with a Reminder Mail-Back Card that Selective Service sends to young men. Checking “Yes” on the Selective Service box on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form has the Department of Education send Selective Service the information. Residents Urged to Be Prepared, Avoid Frozen Pipes
W
ith Albuquerque now experiencing sub-freezing temperatures at night, the Water Authority reminds its customers that it’s time to shut down sprinkler systems for the winter and to prepare household water pipes for cold weather. Fines can be assessed for allowing water (including sprinkler overspray) to freeze on streets and sidewalks. Property owners can also be held legally responsible for damages and injuries that occur as a result of ice hazards. During severe cold snaps, Water Authority operators take as many as 200 calls per day from people with frozen and burst pipes. Avoid trouble by taking precautions NOW: Find the master shutoff valve. The master shutoff valve turns off the water to the entire house. Learn its location and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. This could be critical if a pipe should burst. Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and shut down your sprinkler system. Detaching the hose allows water to drain from the pipe so an overnight freeze doesn’t burst the faucet or the pipe it’s connected to. Insulate faucets and exposed outdoor pipes. For sprinkler systems, turn off the automatic timer and bleed the system of water. It’s time to put your landscaping to bed for the winter.
Insulate pipes and faucets in unheated areas. Wrap exposed water pipes in unheated areas (such as the garage, basement, crawl space, or space beneath your mobile home) before temperatures plummet. You can find pipe wrapping materials at any hardware or building supply store. For a high-tech solution, consider installing “heat tape” or similar materials on exposed water pipe. Be sure to use only ULlisted products and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Seal off access doors, air vents, and cracks. Winter winds whistling through overlooked openings can quickly freeze exposed water pipes. DO NOT plug air vents used by your furnace or water heater. Drip a faucet, open cabinet doors. In very cold weather, drip a faucet at the back of the house overnight or if you’re going to be away for an extended period. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. What if it’s too late? Pipes can freeze even if precautions have been taken. If a pipe on your property freezes, the Water Authority recommends that you call a licensed plumber to make necessary repairs. If a pipe bursts and you need an emergency water shut-off, please call 842-WATR and selection Option 1.

Four Unexpected Things You’ll Miss During A Winter Power Outage
A
ccording to a recent Ipsos survey, just 4 percent of homeowners surveyed selected heat as the household item they would miss the most during a power outage, compared to more than half (51 percent) who said they would miss their TV the most. Yes, long hours in the dark can be incredibly boring without the entertainment of a news program or favorite show, but when considering power outages during the dead of winter, a lack of entertainment may be the last thing homeowners should be concerned about. This research points out that many homeowners don’t realize the dangers and inconveniences they would face during a power outage. To help homeowners be better prepared for the realities of winter-related power outages, Generac Power Systems compiled a few reminders of unexpected things they’ll be without: 1. Running water. When the heat is out, pipes are more susceptible to freezing. Even if you have an oil-based source of household heating, a power outage will still disrupt service and indoor temperatures will dip. A frozen or burst pipe can halt your access to running water (and could lead to some very expensive home repairs). Opening the faucet will provide relief from the excessive pressure that comes with ice blockage and can prevent a burst pipe. 2. Fast emergency responders and utility companies. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice all make for treacherous travel conditions, meaning response from emergency and utility crews will be delayed during winter storms. When power outages are involved, families can quickly find themselves in dangerous situations with delayed response from these important services.
