USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) Holds Inactivation Ceremony By Commander, Submarine Squadron 11 Public Affairs SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The crew of the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) held an inactivation ceremony Oct. 16 at Naval Base Point Loma, celebrating the boat’s service of more than 32 years. The occasion marked the submarine’s final public event before its scheduled transit later this month to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., to commence its inactivation process and eventual decommissioning. Hundreds of supporters and former crew members attended the ceremony to reunite with old shipmates and bid the submarine farewell. Cmdr. Donald Tenney, Albuquerque’s 14th and final commanding officer, attributed the submarine’s successful career to its many crews. “Navy ships have soul and character that remain with them from the beginning to the end of their service,” Tenney said. “That character is embodied in the crew of the ship, and although commanding officers set the tone for the crew, the character of the ship endures beyond the tenure of the individual commanding officers.” Tenney then recognized the plankowners - the original crew - in attendance by asking them to stand, followed by all previous crew members and lastly by all crew members’ families. Also in attendance was Nancy Domenici, the ship’s sponsor, and her husband, former Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.M.). Tenney presented Nancy with flowers as appreciation for her role as the ship’s sponsor. “A little over 33 years ago, you launched the ship with these words: ‘I christen thee Albuquerque. May God bless her and all who sail in her,’” Tenney said to Nancy. “That prayer has definitely been answered as providence has smiled on this ship and her crew as she has sailed the oceans of the world doing the bidding of our nation in war and peace.” Rear Adm. Stuart Munsch, Albuquerque’s ninth commanding officer and current senior military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense, was the guest speaker. “Submarining is hard work no matter what, so if you are going to do it you might as well be successful so that you can experience the reward of your labor,” he said. “Looking back on the past 33 years of Albuquerque, I think we - crews, families, supporting commands, and namesake city

supporters - can look at each other with ‘silent service’ pride and say, ‘we got it right.’” Michael Riyordan, City of Albuquerque’s chief operating officer, represented Mayor Richard Berry and read a mayoral proclamation declaring Oct. 16, 2015, as “USS Albuquerque Day.” The ceremony concluded with the lowering of the national ensign and the hauling down of the commissioning pennant along with a symbolic securing of the watch. Albuquerque recently completed its final deployment before returning to its homeport of Naval Base Point Loma Aug. 21, 2015. A week later, Tenney became the submarine’s 14th and final commanding officer during a change of command ceremony Aug. 28. The ship is the second United States warship to be named after Albuquerque, N.M. It was constructed at Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Conn., launched on March 13, 1982, and commissioned on May 21, 1983. Albuquerque is the 19th submarine of its class. Since its commissioning, Albuquerque deployed 19 times. The submarine steamed more than 500,000 miles and visited nearly 20 countries. Albuquerque was also one of the first nuclear submarines to experience combat, gaining the moniker of “Sure Shooter of the Submarine Force.” Measuring more than 360 feet long and displacing more than 6,900 tons, Albuquerque has a crew of approximately 140 Sailors. Albuquerque is capable of supporting various missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Leaving a Legacy Not Always About Money

here are many ways to leave a legacy. While the most traditional is to bequest an inheritance to survivors through a last will and testament, it is possible to leave behind more than material goods. Passing down your values, unlike your money, can be shared with future generations and may be something to consider, writes Bart Astor, author of the Washington Post bestseller “AARP Roadmap for the Rest of Your Life: Smart Choices about Money, Health, Work, Lifestyle, and Pursuing Your Dreams.” “Your legacy is putting your stamp on the future,” he writes. “It’s a way to make some meaning of your existence: ‘Yes, world of the future, I was here. Here’s my contribution, here’s why I hope my life mattered.’” • • • •
Here is what Astor, an expert in life transitions and elder care, suggests: Researching your genealogy; Giving to a charity that reflects your values; Writing a legacy letter; Preparing an ethical will.
Researching your genealogy is a way to let your children and grandchildren and beyond understand where you and they came from. There are specialized genealogy websites to help, such as Ancestry.com and Archives.gov. You should also designate someone to take over the responsibility of updating the family tree, and make sure your family understands you want it shared with as many family members, and generations, as possible. Astor suggests adding your personal story to the genealogy record by including anecdotes and feelings. Describe your relationships with your parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings and children. “Doing this will enrich the bare facts and timeline, providing color so your heirs and survivors can know what it really felt like to live during your years,” he says. “That’s a legacy no one else can provide.” Giving to charity by contributing money or the services to support them should be done thoughtfully. And it doesn’t mean your children have to be left out of the loop, either. You could create a meaningful gifting plan so your children and grandchildren will receive money while you’re alive, allowing you to watch them benefit from your generosity. Wealthier people can create a charitable foundation or a trust that provides ongoing distributions, so the gift
has more lasting value. For example, you can endow a scholarship to your alma mater for future students. Most colleges have development offices to help you set up this program. Many require at least $25,000 for an ongoing trust, but that money doesn’t have to go to the school right away; it can be left in your will. You might also work with a charity or college to design an annuity in which the institution is designated as the beneficiary when you die but pays you interest during your lifetime. You’ll get a tax credit for some of the donation, too. Best to check with a tax and financial adviser for the most appropriate ways to accomplish your charitable goals. Write a legacy letter to tell your loved ones how much they meant to you. This letter should not contain details that you want the executor of your will to know, such as your funeral and memorial wishes, your Social Security number, where your financial accounts are held and your digital passwords. Rather, Astro suggests that the letter be a way to communicate to your loved ones the things you wish you had told them earlier. Tell your grandson how much it meant to you to be at his birth. This letter can be a way to ensure your spouse or partner knows how much joy your relationship brought and that you hope he or she will find happiness after you’re gone. Preparing an ethical will is an extension of a legacy letter. With an origin going back to centuries of elders orally conveying their values to the next generation, an ethical will lets you share the meaning of your life, beliefs and life lessons. There are no strict rules governing an ethical will because it’s a nonbinding document. Unlike a traditional last will and testament, an ethical will doesn’t lay out who will receive your possessions. You can, however, use it to explain why certain possessions will go to specific people. It can be done in writing, as an oral recording or on video. You might want to make a kind of scrapbook, with pictures and anecdotes annotating them. An ethical will is your way of telling your personal story, tying together what you’ve accomplished, how you’ve lived your life and what you hope your heirs will take from you. “It’s your way of still being in the room, which is the point of leaving a legacy,” writes Astor. magine: Someday, people will talk about traffic accident fatalities as a thing of the past. Crashes will be eradicated, thanks to an onslaught of new technologies that eliminate human error behind the wheel, the cause of 90 percent of roadway mishaps today. A new America THINKS survey found 71 percent of Americans expect emerging technologies, such as connected and automated vehicles, to improve safety. A zero-crash future is hugely compelling. It’s also only possible with the lightning-fast collection and processing of huge amounts of data. Connected vehicle-to-vehicle technologies sense the speed, direction, size, position and location of every other car nearby and use the data to assist human decision making. Safer Roads In congested highway traffic, for example, you may not see a driver braking hard several car lengths ahead of you. But your connected car, communicating wirelessly with the vehicles around it, will sense the abrupt slowdown, alert you, and assist you in stopping your vehicle before a collision. Other Benefits If cars don’t crash, vehicles can drive in platoons at high rates of speed and with less space between them. That means every lane of traffic in a congested city could carry three times its current capacity.

Combining vehicle connectivity and automation will deliver incredible change—undoubtedly the biggest change to mobility in America since the advent of the automobile itself. The technology is here. Car-makers are beginning implementation. The time for public education is now. Drivers will need to understand where their personal information is going and how it will be used—especially considering 80 percent of Americans worry about privacy with new transportation technologies. The survey, however, also indicates that most would grant access to their travel and vehicle information if it guaranteed safer roads or lower gas prices. National Safety Council statistics indicate that nearly 40,000 Americans may lose their lives in car accidents this year. With the technology available today that is proven to prevent fatal accidents, we have a moral obligation to implement it as quickly as possible. Vinegar Can Help Control Blood Sugar Levels
uring November, National Diabetes Month, or at any time, there could be sweet news for the 29.1 million people the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates have diabetes. According to Dr. Carol S. Johnston, professor and associate director of the Nutrition Program in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, vinegar can be part of a diet strategy to manage blood glucose. Why Vinegar Here’s why: Eating foods that are high in starch, such as bread and rice, causes surges in blood glucose levels, Dr. Johnston explains. These high levels of blood glucose have been linked to higher or increased cardiovascular disease risk in healthy populations and can also increase complications among those with type 2 diabetes. Consuming small amounts of vinegar—one to two tablespoons—before your meal, however, can reduce these high levels of glucose, she says. In fact, for individuals with type 2 diabetes, studies have shown that consuming vinegar prior to meals on a daily basis can significantly reduce blood levels of A1c, a key indicator of average blood glucose concentrations. In addition to consuming vinegar alone, consuming foods high in vinegar is an option. Vinegar is found in pickled products and salad dressings and can also be consumed before a meal on a salad. Why It’s Important Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal.
Most food you eat gets turned into glucose, or sugar, for your body to use for energy. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood. Diabetes can have serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, but you don’t have to be in such statistics. The International Life Sciences Institute reports that “Several studies have demonstrated that vinegar can help reduce hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, hyperlipidemia and obesity.” What Else To Do In addition to adding vinegar to your diet, other helpful changes can include: • Eat smaller portions. Learn what a serving size is for different foods and how many servings you need in a meal. • Eat less fat. Choose fewer high-fat foods and use less fat for cooking. • Exercise for at least 30 minutes at least five days a week. • Follow your doctor’s advice about any health issues you experience. Helping Kids Thrive Through Emotional Intelligence

s most parents know, small children have no problem letting out their emotions. But how well do they understand what they’re feeling? That skill is known as Emotional Intelligence (EQ), the process by which children learn to recognize, understand and manage their emotions—and EQ is key to a child’s success in life.
With a curriculum rooted in decades of research, The Moodsters help kids handle the everyday challenges of growing up and can foster conversations between parents and preschoolers about feelings.
According to Marc Brackett, Ph.D., Director of Yale’s Center for Emotional Intelligence, “Research shows that children who learn EQ skills have less anxiety and depression; have fewer attention, learning and behavior problems; are better problem solvers; display greater social and leadership skills; and perform better academically.”
