sk any movie studio executive if the DVD gravy train is dead and they will unequivically tell you “absolutely.” They will grudgingly admit that DVD popularity is a thing of yesterday. One only has to look at the demise of retail giant Blockbuster to see that it’s true. Taking the place, of course, is Video On Demand (VOD) -- the downloading and streaming of movies and television shows on demand to consumers’ computers and internet-enabled televisions, via cable and satelite and mobile devices. While some in Hollywood may be uncomfortable with this new direction, others are looking at it as an opportunity and potential boom for growth, marketing and, yes, the almighty and important bottom line. “Whether studios like it or not, business currents and consumer interests have clearly shifted,” says Gordon Scott Venters, CEO of The Movie Studio, Inc. (TMS) a publicly-traded company from South Florida (OTCMVES). “We can either capitalize on this trend or stick our head in the sand and hope everything will stay the same. It won’t” And the TMS CEO stated, “I’ve never been one to shy away from the future.” Which is why the South Florida-based studio released its latest movie “Exposure,” on DVD, Blu-Ray, iTunes and streaming digital distribution. This way, Venters says , “We can better promote ‘Exposure’ and all our other films and upcoming releases, like ‘Bad Actress’ and ‘Double Exposure.’

So, what about those small plastic discs that most consumers have come to know and, if not exactly love, have certainly grown accustomed to? According to the movie studio industry, DVD’s will continue to play a smaller role, albeit a supporting one, to digital. “DVD’s are going to cease continue to be a viable part of a studio’s revenue,” predicts Venters. “There is clearly now a strong consumer interest in digital viewing.” To this end, it would seem that studios would do well to embrace the ageold adage of “give the customer what they want, VOD!.” As is the case with The Movie Studio. Law Does Not Provide for a Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment for 2016

The Social Security Act provides for an automatic increase in Social Security and SSI benefits if there is an increase in inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The period of consideration includes the third quarter of the last year a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) was made to the third quarter of the current year. As determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there was no increase in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2014 to the third quarter of 2015. Therefore, under existing law, there can be no COLA in 2016.
The Department of Health and Human Services has not yet announced Medicare premium changes for 2016. Should there be an increase in the Medicare Part B premium, the law contains a “hold harmless” provision that protects approximately 70 percent of Social Security beneficiaries from paying a higher Part B premium, in order to avoid reducing their net Social Security benefit. Those not protected include higher income beneficiaries subject to an income-adjusted Part B premium and beneficiaries newly entitled to Part B in 2016. In addition, beneficiaries who have their Medicare Part B premiums paid by state medical assistance programs will see no change in their Social Security benefit. The state will be required to pay any Medicare Part B premium increase.

New TIPS Program Focuses on Preventing Youth Sports Injuries
I
t’s recognized as a “silent epidemic” among our nation’s youth.
We’re talking sports-related injuries. Every day nearly 8,000 young athletes sustain an injury bad enough to send them to an emergency room, and -- if that’s not chilling enough -- just look at these numbers from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: * In the past year alone, 48 youths died due to sports injuries. * About 30,000 high school athletes are hospitalized every year. * Concussions account for 90 percent of high schoolers’ 300,000 annual head injuries. That explains why a new program called “Athletic TIPS” (Towards Injury Prevention in Sports) has garnered the support of everyone from health care professionals to athletic directors to sports stars like football legend Michael Strahan. The retired New York Giants defensive end, in fact, narrates the introductory video on behalf of the not-for-profit group
behind the initiative. The program’s goal? To foster “a safer experience” for athletes at the kindergarten through college levels by focusing on the recognition, prevention and management of sports-related injuries -- all done through community workshops, online learning, and other grassroots initiatives. “Athletic TIPS answers a critical need for educating school-age athletes, their parents, and advisors about sports-related injuries,” says Ed Goren, the former vice-chairman of Fox Sports Media Group, who’s backing the initiative. “Hopefully, parents will feel more confident encouraging their sons and daughters to reap sports’ substantial benefits and life lessons.” The workshops target four key areas: concussion recognition and prevention; nutrition in sports management; preventing dehydration and heatrelated conditions; and recognizing, managing, and preventing musculoskeletal injuries. Have Peace Of Mind When Pets Are Home Alone
ccording to the American Kennel Club, some half a million pets are affected by house fires each year—but there are steps you can take so yours aren’t among them.
• If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately and have it fixed before you use it again.
The Problem
• Replace frayed or cracked electrical cords and don’t overload extension cords. They should not be run under rugs.
Pets are often kept inside the house while their people are away. Unfortunately, if a fire starts or there’s a gas leak and the smoke alarm sounds, pets are trapped as they can’t call for help.
• Never tamper with the fuse box or use an improper-size fuse. Even the best precautions can’t prevent all house fires. The second key to saving dogs and cats from fires is for pet owners to find out about the threat and call for help or get home as quickly as possible.
Some Answers This risk can be reduced two ways. First, it’s a bright idea to take steps to keep fires from starting and spreading. Here are a few hints on how: • Install smoke detectors, at least one on each floor and near bedrooms. Check the batteries monthly and change them at least once a year. • Keep portable and space heaters at least three feet from anything that may burn. Never leave heaters on when you leave home or go to sleep. Children and pets should always be kept away from them. • Never smoke in bed or when you’re sleepy. • Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles and wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. • Keep pot handles turned inward so they don’t overhang the stove. • If grease catches fire, carefully slide a lid over the pan and smother the flames, then turn off the burner. • Lock matches and lighters away where kids can’t reach them. • Don’t leave lit candles unattended.

Barging Through History
A
lthough barges have been around at least since ancient Egypt, the innovations one 150-year-old company made to them in the 1930s has given a big boost to commerce in the U.S. today.
Likewise, Cargill’s search for materials to “back haul” so barges would not be empty on return trips was key to starting what is today one of its businesses: salt and deicing. In 1955, the firm filled up a barge with Louisiana rock salt, which Northern states used to deice roads. Today, Cargill produces, packages and ships salt for use in table salt, animal nutrition supplements, water softener, deicing road salt and other products.
Here’s a look at then and now. Then: In the late 1930s, Cargill’s trade business had expanded significantly as it made frequent use of inland waterways for shipping. To its former president John MacMillan, Jr., however, the towboatand-wooden-barge combination was slow, cumbersome and poorly designed to carry the maximum amount of grain. MacMillan’s idea was to create a single, integrated vehicle, cast in steel, which was wider but still able to pass between locks. When no builder was interested, his company entered the shipbuilding business. The new “Carneida” barge was a game changer for commodity shipping, able to more gracefully pilot waterways and efficiently move larger volumes of crops from inland farms to their global destinations. 63¢ / line for first week
