f you’re 10 years out from when you expect to retire, then now is the time to get serious about a retirement plan, says Kirk Cassidy, a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) who emphasizes the importance of the holistic approach to personal finances. “No matter what stage you’re in, there’s never a bad time to take responsibility for your financial destiny,” says Cassidy, president of Senior Planning Advisors (www.seniorplanningadvisors.com [2]). “However, a decade away from retirement should signify to pre-retirees that it’s really time to get a comprehensive plan if you want to enjoy retirement.” In recent years, retirement planning has received plenty of attention. In 2011, the first of the baby boomers reached what used to be known as retirement age. That kicked off an 18-year run for boomers, who’ll be turning 65 at a rate of about 10,000 a day. Despite the attention, there are plenty of important details that most pre-retirees are likely to miss, says Cassidy. • THERE ARE FOUR IMPORTANT BUCKETS FOR YOUR MONEY/ ASSETS. The first bucket includes liquidity for emergency funds, involving products like money markets, CDs and savings. The second bucket is lifetime, contractually guaranteed income that you can never outlive. That entails pensions, social security, and hybrid annuities. Long-term growth is the third bucket and that is where we get capital appreciation through investments such as stocks, bonds, ETFs and principle protected notes. Finally, there’s the legacy bucket, which focuses on estate planning, charitable and tax planning, long-term care planning, as well as inheritance and passing assets to our loved ones. “You don’t need to know all of the ins and outs of these buckets,” he says. “Understanding these buckets, however, will put you on the right path.” • MOST FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS MEET A MINIMAL STANDARD. Brokers and advisors who operate under the suitability standard rather than a fiduciary standard carry products from companies they represent. Under the law, these brokers are only responsible for doing what is “suitable” for clients, or what is “good enough,” but that doesn’t mean “optimal.” Approximately 85 percent of financial professionals meet this minimal requirement, as reported on PBS Frontline. Only 15 percent of financial professionals meet the fiduciary standard, which, under law, requires the “very best” advice to clients. • EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, SO THEIR PORTFOLIOS SHOULD BE, TOO. Given that so many advisors meet only the suitability standard, which

doesn’t require the very best advice, it may be no surprise that many Americans have a cookie-cutter-style retirement plan. A product that’s great for your neighbor may not be for you, Cassidy says. Ask questions. Be curious as to whether your products are really best for you. • BEWARE OF HIDDEN FEES. Mutual funds can be two to three times more costly than advertised and often carry front-end and back-end loads of charges. Variable annuities are considered one of the most expensive risk-type vehicles an investor can own today. According to a 2012 study [1] from the research firm Demos, the average American household will lose approximately $155,000, or 30 percent, of what they would have otherwise saved, to money managers of their 401(k) funds. • DYING COSTS MONEY. Simply having a will in place will not protect you from probate and unnecessary taxation to dollars you want to pass on to your loved ones. Often, an estate plan doesn’t “sync up” with an individual’s portfolio properly, which leads to large legal problems for loved ones in the time of loss. Asset protection is one of the most important measures in getting your money to where you want it to go after death, Cassidy says. Don’t have an exspouse successfully claim your hard-earned money, which you’d intended go to your children. ‘Bach to Bach’ Kicks Off New Mexico Philharmonic Season
he New Mexico Philharmonic (NMPHIL) opens its 2015-16 “Sunday Afternoon Classics,” Oct. 18, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. The series starts with “Bach to Bach,” at 2 p.m. This all-Bach program will be guest-conducted by Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Featured soloists will be Ruxandra Simionescu-Marquardt, violinist, and Melissa Peña, oboe and English horn. C O M M E N TA R Y When The Rubber Hits The Road—Or Ice—This Winter, Will You Be Ready?
I
n winter, it’s not just about the precipitation on the road. Tires get cold, too, and when they’re cold, all-season tires don’t perform to their full potential. In fact, in temperatures as cool as 45 degrees or below, the rubber in all-season tires gradually hardens, leading to decreased road traction and less grip, causing difficulty with braking and turning. Winter tire safety experts at Discount Tire urge drivers to consider their cold weather climate; if it is regularly below 45 degrees, it’s time for a set of winter tires to keep you and your family safe on the roads this year. “Too often, motorists associate winter tires with only snow and ice,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “At Discount Tire, we take winter tire safety seriously and know it’s important for drivers to realize that allseason tires can suffer performance issues on any driving surface when temperatures drop below 45 degrees, snow or no snow.”
Winter tires use specially engineered tread rubber with enhanced compound to add the extra grip needed in winter driving conditions that helps keep a car safely in motion without skidding off the road. This added grip provides 25 to 50 percent more traction in snow and ice than regular allseason tires. Tread design in winter tires also uses thousands of extra traction edges for exceptional grip in cold weather driving conditions where ice, snow, slush and water may be present. What drivers may not realize is precipitation can actually pack in the larger grooves on all-season tires, leading to dangerous skidding and impaired braking. Five tire and road safety tips for winter this year:
1. Replace your all-season tires with superior cold traction winter tires if you regularly drive in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. Make sure to replace all four tires to avoid an unsafe traction mismatch. 2. Don’t forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specifically for your set of winter tires will save money in the long run. They pay for themselves by eliminating the cost of changeovers at the beginning and end of the winter season, and by saving your expensive wheels from the wear and tear of ice, slush, snow and salt. 3. Check tire pressure regularly and don’t forget to check the spare. Underinflated or over-inflated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel consumption. For every 10 degrees change in temperature, tire air pressure changes 1 psi! 4. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. 5. Make sure your tire shop properly torques the lug nuts to the specifications for your vehicle when changing over to winter tires. Ten Tips To Prepare Your Home For Cold Weather
W
ith winter weather comes colder outdoor temperatures and the desire for a warm and comfortable home. Following these 10 tips will help you conserve energy, lower utility bills, increase the efficiency and longevity of your heating system and maintain comfortable temperatures in your home. 1. Seal your home. Inspect windows, doors and the exterior of your home for cracks or leaks. Caulk, patch or weather-strip any areas that might leak cold air and make your heating system work harder. Seal and insulate your ducts and replace screens with storm windows and storm doors. 2. Cover windows. Use drapes and blinds to reduce heat loss through windows. However, windows with direct sunlight may benefit from having the blinds up during daylight hours, as sunlight can help heat the space. 3. Clean gutters. Clogged gutters and drains can form ice dams that prevent your drainage system from working properly and lead to water seeping into your home. Be certain that dirt slopes away from your house to ensure rain or snow will drain away from the house. 4. Check your insulation. Be certain the insulation in your attic, ceilings, exterior and basement walls, floors and crawl spaces meet levels recommended for your area. 5. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans. A fan that runs clockwise pushes warm air downward and recirculates it through the room. 6. Clean your fireplace and make sure your damper is properly sealed.
