They teach academic lessons and various skills that students will need to attend college and to enter the job market. They help them stay safe and healthy on and off the field. But there’s something more they can provide that most people haven’t really thought about.

The Reasons Consider this: A young man in the United States is required to register with the Selective Service when he becomes 18 years old. In addition, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has made registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship for any man who comes to settle in the U.S. before his 26th birthday. Registration is the law and it’s a civic duty. Furthermore, failure to register carries consequences that can impact a young man’s future.
Fortunately, helping them fulfill this obligation can be simple. Most high schools in the country have volunteer registrars, generally a guidance counselor, teacher or administrative staff member nominated by the principal. The volunteer can be a man or woman but must be over 18, a U.S. citizen and, if a man, registered with the Selective Service himself. He or she provides the necessary forms and offers whatever help the students need to fill them out properly. Where Else To Turn
Failure to register closes the door to: • Many college loans, Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study and Guaranteed Student PLUS Loans • Federal job training and certification programs • All federal jobs and many state and town jobs.
Even if they are not the school registrar, teachers and coaches can advise their students to register and they can direct them to check block #22 on the federal FAFSA forms or to go online at www.sss.gov from a smartphone or computer. ccording to the U.S. Department of Education, Americans owe more than $1.3 trillion in student loan debt. That’s nearly the gross domestic product of all of Australia. The average U.S. college graduate has nearly $38,000 in student loan debt. What’s more, the Teens & Careers Survey by Junior Achievement USA (JA) found that a majority of teens hadn’t taken or weren’t sure if they had taken any steps to pay for the schooling required for their career choice, and 41 percent didn’t know how they would fund the cost of training or school.

Cruise Lines: Protecting And Preserving The Environment

ore Americans are choosing cruise vacations than ever before. Over 12 million people are expected to cruise out of U.S. ports by the end of 2016, up from 11.3 million in 2015, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
3. Reuse water in a number of ways: Recycled hot water is used to heat passenger cabins. Naturally occurring condensation from shipboard air-conditioning units is reclaimed and reused to wash decks on some cruise ships, saving up to 22.3 million gallons of fresh water annually.
“Cruise lines are committed to environmental best practices and policies,” says Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. “After all, our business depends on pristine oceans, clean air and beautiful destinations.”
4. Invest in new technologies and cleaner fuels to reduce ships’ air emissions: Billions of dollars are being invested in the development of advanced liquefied natural gas (LNG)–fueled cruise ships that will have lower emissions and higher energy efficiency.
Cruise lines use a number of green technologies to minimize the industry’s environmental impacts.
5. Invite passengers to join environmental stewardship efforts: While onboard, passengers are encouraged to participate in resource conservation programs, take environmental education classes, and tour below deck to see firsthand how crewmembers work to reduce and often eliminate waste.

n October 5th, 4-H and flying drones will excite more than 100,000 kids about science in the nation’s largest youth-led engineering challenge. 4-H National Youth Science Day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will come to life for thousands of youth October 5th, when 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD)’s Drone Discovery Challenge kicks off across the country. Sponsored by 4-H and HughesNet, NYSD is the largest youth-led science challenge in the U.S. Youth and mentors will explore the concepts behind drone flight by designing and building a camera-equipped glider. Participants will also learn computer coding by simulating drone flight online. Events take place in all 50 states while 4-H hosts a flagship event in Washington, D.C. The goal of NYSD is to excite kids about STEM through hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. Drone Discovery teaches about controlled flight; payload and remote sensing; coding and programming, and practical tasks such as identifying invasive plants in a cornfield. “Drones are an exciting topic for both kids and adults.
