ome disasters, such as hurricanes, can be tracked in advance so you have time to prepare before they actually strike. Others descend with little to no advance warning. If you have hearing loss, the wisest course is to put an emergency plan into place while there is no threat brewing. These four tips can help:

1. Register for all available emergency alert systems. Opt into all available alert systems and text notifications so if an urgent situation arises, you’ll get the warning. For information on the various national level alerts, including Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs), visit www.ready.gov/alerts.

• Bottled water • Jerky, protein bars, cheese or peanut butter crackers, and similar nourishing snacks • Copies of important documents sealed in a waterproof bag (insurance cards, driver’s licenses, Social Security cards) • Flashlight and spare batteries (alternately, a crank-powered flashlight) • $100 cash, in small bills, also sealed in a waterproof bag • Backup supplies for any medical devices (hearing aid charger, hearing aid batteries) • Cell phone charger and backup rechargeable battery supply

Your emergency plan should include the locations of nearby shelters. If you have a service dog, make sure you have all its identifying paperwork, tags or vest ready, along with bedding and at least three days’ supply of food, water and medication. 2. Put together a list of your health and medical needs. Your emergency kit should include: • Names and contact information for your doctors • List of any allergies or other chronic medical conditions • List of any required medications and dosages • Your blood type • Any medical and communications devices you might require (hearing aids, hearing aid accessories) • Health insurer name and full membership information (plan name, group number) • Names and contact information for your preferred hospital and pharmacy • Hearing aid make, model, and manufacturer information.

• Compact travel blanket, pillow • Personal hygiene items (toothbrush and toothpaste, sanitary pads) • All-weather packable jacket • Crank weather alert portable radio. Also consider a separate emergency kit for your car with a first-aid kit, repair tools, flares and booster cables.

3. Assemble all possible communication methods. Figure out all the alternatives you can use to communicate, such as hearing aid accessories (assistive listening devices, or ALDs) that let you hand someone a microphone so you can hear what he or she says directly in your hearing aids. If your devices are equipped with telecoils (T-coils), make sure you know how to activate that setting. If you have difficulty speaking, create and store text messages in a smartphone or tablet (for example: “I am hard of hearing,” “Do you know sign language?” or “I can’t hear you, please write”). Write the same messages in a notebook or on cue cards as backup, in case your high-tech devices fail or run out of power.

Do This Fall Yard Work And Reap Springtime Benefits

ots of people think their family yards need less attention in the fall but autumn is no time to ignore your lawn and landscape.

“What you do now will determine the quality of your family yard next spring and summer,” explained Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), the international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. “Every gardener knows to plant bulbs in the fall but autumn is also the time to mow, aerate, mulch, trim and patch your lawn,” said Kiser. He offers five tips to help you get your yard into top shape this fall and ready for more relaxing and fun outdoor activities next year. Keep mowing. Grass still needs regular care to stay healthy. Grass that’s too high may attract lawn-damaging field mice. Shorter grass is more resistant to diseases and traps fewer falling leaves. Cutting the grass low lets more sun reach the crown of the grass, so less leaf will turn brown in the winter. However, cutting off too much at one time can be damaging, so never trim more than a third of the grass blades off in a single cutting. Put mower blades on the lowest settings for the last two cuts of the season. Aerate your lawn. Compressed soil hurts grass health. Aerating punches holes into the soil and lets oxygen, water and nutrients into a lawn. Use a walk-behind aerator or get an attachment to pull behind a riding mower. Mulch your leaves. Many mowers can mulch leaves with an attachment. Since mulching with a mower can mix grass clippings with leaf particles, these nitrogen-rich grass particles and carbon-rich leaf particles will compost more quickly. Together, they return nutrients to the soil. Trim and shore up trees and bushes. Use trimmers, chain saws or pole

pruners to cut back trees, shrubs and plants. Make sure branches are safely trimmed back from overhead lines and not in danger of falling on a structure in rough weather. You may need to tie or brace limbs of upright evergreens or plants to prevent them from breaking in high winds or snow. Call a professional arborist for big trees or hard-to-reach spots. Repair bald spots. Fall is a great time to patch bald or thin spots in a lawn. The easiest way to do this is with an all-in-one lawn repair mixture (found at most garden shops and home centers). Use a garden rake or dethatcher to scratch loose the soil on the spot. Kiser also added that it’s important to follow safety procedures whenever using outdoor power equipment. Read your owner’s manual. It will describe the individual requirements for your particular machine and provide directions on which fuels may be appropriate for your product. Fuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol should not be used unless directed in the owner’s manual. He said, “You’ll also want to service and winterize your lawn mower, string trimmer, leaf blower and other outdoor power equipment.” And remember, most gas-fueled outdoor power equipment is warranted and designed to run on E10 (10 percent ethanol) fuel or less. There are fuel options available today that should not be used in your outdoor power equipment. Remember to “look before you pump” and make sure to drain the fuel tank before storing equipment for the winter. In the study, researchers found that when in all-girl groups, female students had a 7.5 percent boost in their average marks. Minor Symptoms Turned Out To Be A Major-League Disease

ike most people starting retirement, Angela S.* was thinking about how to manage volunteer work, help her children finish college, and just starting to consider ‘what’s the next chapter,’ when her husband, Shawn, noticed that she was having trouble tying her shoelaces. They joked that she was either too stressed or too relaxed, but when Angela’s left leg started feeling weak, she finally went to a doctor. It turned out to be Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), called ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive disease—it gets worse over time—that attacks the nerve cells that control voluntary movement. No one knows for sure what causes ALS, and there is no known cure. After seeing a neurologist, Angela and Shawn did a little research to try to understand this disease. They learned that ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that send messages throughout the body. When these nerves start to die, the brain can’t control muscle movement. Ultimately, patients can become totally weak and then paralyzed. “Of course we were completely overwhelmed at first,” says Angela. “Shawn was my rock, but I’m worried about him too—I depend on him more and more.”

Angela has become somewhat of an expert. “We want to do everything we can to help ourselves now—and we want to help researchers understand more about this disease so that future generations won’t have to even worry about it, ever.” May is ALS awareness month. In 1939, Lou Gehrig, a beloved baseball player, first brought attention to this disease that sadly bears his name. Over 78 years later, researchers have made some inroads into understanding some of the causes and are working hard to put together pieces of this puzzle. Because learning more about ALS is an important step in the battle to defeat it, the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has developed the National ALS Registry to gather confidential health information from people who are living with the disease. 50+ Expo Offers Fun Way to Check Health, Learn Wellness Tips By Autumn Gray

o offense to our fabulous Albuquerque physicians, but checkups are not tops on most people’s lists of fun things to do – with one exception. Every year, one day in October brings the Prime Time 50+ Expo, where you can down a breakfast burrito, sing along to the music of local one-man band Freddie Chavez and win prizes, all while receiving free medical attention ranging from flu shots to bone density exams. This is the 22nd year for the health fair, which is one of just a few in Albuquerque that targets people ages 50 and older, said David Rivord, publisher of Prime Time magazine, which hosts the event. It is scheduled for 8 a.m.1:30 p.m. October 19 at the Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place NE, and is made possible by title sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, and sponsors DaVita Medical Group, Stryker and the City of Albuquerque Department Of Senior Affairs. About 75 vendors are expected to display their goods and services, most of which pertain to health and wellness, but there will also be home improvement businesses and the like – more than enough variety to keep the anticipated 1,000 attendees interested and entertained. Prizes donated by vendors will be announced regularly throughout the event. “Every 30 minutes or so, we grab the microphone and have some drawings and give away four or five items,” Rivord said. “People walk out of there with a $25 gift card to a local restaurant or whatever it may be. It just adds a little bit of fun.” While having a good time is one goal of the event, health is serious business and the real motivation behind the expo. “Prime Time is a community magazine. As such, we strive to not only provide our readers and their families with diverse and relevant stories each month but also to provide this highquality free annual event as a service to them.
