Aging In Place: What Smart Homeowners Are Doing To Stay Self-Reliant
M
ore than 90 percent of older adults prefer to age in place rather than move to assisted living or senior housing, according to the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC). By choosing to stay at home well into retirement, homeowners are taking on more responsibility for maintaining their independence as well as maintaining their home. However, they may not be aware of the significant responsibilities, including home care that can require physical labor or the increasing dependence on reliable electricity to maintain health, communication and security needs. Additionally, the homeowner may not be aware of the myriad of minor upgrades needed to adequately modify the house for safe, secure and comfortable living. When thinking about comfort and security, home automation is top of mind for today’s modern house. This includes lighting controls and fixtures that cast more light for better visibility inside the home. Enhanced lighting and monitoring will also improve security and can alter the mood with just a touch of a button. Better lighting for an aging homeowner is a top remodeling upgrade, while eliminating cords from lamps can simultaneously reduce the risk of trips and falls in the home. These days, it’s common to think about losing electricity due to storms and windy weather as well as diminished visibility in a darkened home. A backup generator can reduce these risks and can also be a lifesaver if the home relies on refrigerated medications or any kind of electronic monitoring.

f you’re like most parents, you work hard to make sure your children eat their veggies, brush their teeth and always say “please” and “thank you,” but one important habit is often forgotten. Experts advise parents to teach children the importance of smiling. Smiling can positively affect you and the people around you, and lower stress, which should improve your child’s quality of life. Setting a regular bedtime: According to the National Sleep Foundation, children need at least 10 to 12 hours of sleep. By the age of 2, children have spent more time asleep than awake. Why is this? allroom dancers across the United States have celebrated National Ballroom Dance Week every year since 1989. But we New Mexicans love dancing so much that one week isn’t enough — so we’re turning NBDW into National Ballroom Dance Month.

Throughout September, USA Dance, along with local ballroom dance studios and nonprofit charities, are hosting a variety of events that will appeal to all dancers — beginners, amateurs, professionals and even spectators who just love to watch great dancing. “This is a terrific opportunity for the whole community to get moving on the dance floor,” said Anna Watkins, president of the North Central New Mexico chapter of USA Dance. “It’s a great way to meet people, get some exercise, and have fun.” Among several ballroom dance events scheduled during September, the local USA Dance chapter and Enchantment Ballroom are hosting events to benefit two local charities: Silver Horizons Food Pantry and the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation. You almost might as well just send your utility company a blank check if you lack what Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for Advancement of Roofing Excellence, calls “a continual flow of air to help protect the efficiency of your attic’s insulation.” The culprit working against achieving that: excess moisture buildup that clings to your roof’s underside in winter from seemingly benign sources -- i.e., appliances, showers and cooking vapors -- before ultimately soaking the insulation when the condensed moisture falls.
Okay, so it takes 10 minutes of pedaling just to run the toaster. But, hey, the point is, there are lots of ways you might not have thought of to cut your energy bills this summer. Here are some of the more realistic ones for homeowners: * Make your yard work for you. It’s already been hammered into our heads that strategically placed greenery can add to a house’s all-important “curb appeal.” Well, guess what? Adding trees, shrubs and spiffy vinecovered trellises also happens to work wonders against the sizzling sun. “Trees reduce bills not just by shading your house, but by cooling the air by releasing moisture,” Asa Foss of the U.S. Green Building Council told AARP. * Ceiling fans are your new best bud. Decrease the use of electricitygobbling air conditioners with this simple little trick: “[Running fans] counterclockwise will push hot air up in the summer” -- your goal -- “and clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your rooms warmer during cooler 63¢ / line for first week
