The Time Is Now To End Family Fire

any Americans would agree that it’s past time we change the discussion around guns, gun safety and gun violence. As a trauma surgeon and victim of gun violence, I actively discuss and participate in gun safety conversations with my patients and their families every day. You, too, can become part of the conversation. While there are numerous issues one could focus on, let me describe one that each and every one of us can help play an active role in changing today: safe storage. There are currently over 4.6 million homes with children where guns are sitting around unlocked and loaded. Every day, senseless, unintentional injuries and deaths are a direct result of unsecured guns in the home. These injuries and deaths, known as Family Fire, have harmed thousands of American children. This isn’t a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. It’s an American issue that each individual, every home and every gun owner has the ability to change for the better. Fortunately, responsible gun owners will tell you that safe storage prevents injuries and deaths.

Dealing With Mosquito Season By Bugman
M
osquito season is here, so it is wise to take measures to prevent the blood-suckers from congregating in your yard.
Reduce standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Some species only need a half inch of standing water, and eggs can hatch as quickly as within a week. Make sure you change any pet outdoor drinking water and birdbath water regularly. Keep grass cut and shrubbery trimmed to minimize hiding places for adult mosquitoes. Make sure there are no old tires on your property. If there are some, drill holes in them so water will drain. Any plastic or metal containers should be upside down so they can’t collect water. If you have plastic tarps or plastic on the ground anywhere, the folds in the material can gather water. Check and dump frequently. Check plants with large leaves that may collect water where the leaves join the stem. Tip the plant over if in a pot or flush it at least weekly to disrupt any mosquito breeding. Check for water in the bottoms of plant containers, including in hanging plants. Check for holes in trees or stumps that may collect water. You can add food grade diatomaceous earth to any standing water to kill mosquito larvae. Building a bat house is also not a bad idea to keep mosquito popula-

tions down, as a single bat can eat several thousand mosquitoes in one night. Make sure all screens on doors, windows and vents are functional. If you have cots or picnic tables outside for use in the evening, place mosquito netting around them. Planting any of the following can also help repel mosquitoes: rosemary, lemongrass, marigold, lemon balm, lemon thyme, catnip, garlic, lavender and basil. When you go outside, wear a good mosquito repellent. Repellents without DEET may be advisable, especially for children. For ages 2 -12, only concentrations under 10 percent should be used, and repellents should not be applied more than three times a day. Some people who are exposed to DEET have experienced negative health effects, including rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. Here is a recipe for a homemade repellent: Combine in a 16-ounce bottle: 15 drops lavender oil 3-4 Tbsp. vanilla extract 1/4 cup lemon juice Fill bottle with water. Shake. Ready to use. Savvy Marketers Scrap Ads for Stories
arketing a product or service to consumers is arguably a subtle art form - especially these days. Which is why pop-up and banner ads are now akin to the dinosaur age.
In fact, if you asked the average consumer to recall a banner ad from the last website they visited, don’t expect much. Why? Banner ads are notoriously tuned out by consumers because they don’t engage their attention and emotions. In addition, it’s much easier now for consumers to avoid these ads with blockers and DVRs. What does capture consumers’ attention? A good story. And savvy marketers are exploring new ways to use storytelling to attract and hold consumers’ interest and influence their behavior. This is more than a hunch. Science supports the power of emotions and stories to engage an audience. With this in mind, Pressboard, an online content marketing platform, believes that stories are the most powerful way for brands to communicate with consumers. When an individual hears, reads, or views a story, for example, it prompts an emotional connection. The brain releases oxytocin, the “feelgood” hormone associated with, among other things, sex and childbirth, that promotes a feeling of bonding and connection. Psychological research suggests that stories can influence an individual’s actions and inspire them to make choices and change a behavior in response to a story. Underscoring this concept, Pressboard launched an experimental website, titled iwantmorecats.com, that offered users the chance to see pictures and videos of cats instead of banner ads. “People just don’t like ads, not advertisers, not publishers and definitely not consumers,” he notes. Meaningful content beats banner ads for communicating with consumers, according to Pressboard. To this end, companies such as Pressboard provide a platform to link brands with media publishers and track what stories resonate. Some tips for smart storytelling include: * Engaging emotions with a personal story, such as a triumph over adversity; * Developing a relationship with your audience by highlighting real people in your content, whether that’s employees or customers; * Using visuals that support the story and catch the reader’s eye; * Allowing yourself to be vulnerable and open with your audience, making your brand more relatable; * Influencing public opinion of your brand by sharing the story on social media where discussion can happen. In the end, changing behavior is the Holy Grail for marketers; but equally important is the ability to forge emotional connections with readers. Grandparents Preparing For A New School Year By Tamara Shope
S
hirley and Doug Mitchell have been raising their 13-year-old granddaughter, Haley, for the last three years. She’s bright, kind, helpful and a straight shooter, much like Shirley. And together, the family is gearing up for a major moment in the life of any child: eighth grade. Experts who track such figures say that the Mitchells will spend between about $700 and $1,500 this year on school supplies, a number that has nearly doubled in the last decade. Huntington National Bank’s annual Backpack Index follows school supply trends, including the fact that rising spending figures regularly outpace inflation. In New Mexico, according to Census figures, 26,241 grandparents are householders responsible for their grandchildren who live with them. About a third of that figure includes grandparents who are raising their grandchildren without their parents present at all. The Mitchells are in that latter group. Shirley, now 57, and Doug, 71, had been married for four years when Haley was born, their only grandchild and the only girl in a family full of boys. Shirley and Haley were instantly bonded, and Haley spent most of her weekends with her grandparents. Her parents struggled with addiction issues that interfered with their ability to raise Haley, and the Mitchells quickly stepped in to be Haley’s full-time guardians. They join a growing number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The Mitchells are part of what the New Republic earlier this year dubbed “The Grandparenting Generation” and what nonprofit group Generations United calls “grandfamilies.” “I have been wanting to start a grandparents-as-parents support group or something,” said Shirley. “I think it’s more common than people realize, but I think it creates a unique set of problems we have to work through. Sometimes Doug and I feel like we don’t fit in anywhere; people our age don’t have little kids at home, and the people who do have kids Haley’s age aren’t our age.” They are shopping for school supplies and new clothes for a 13-yearold girl for the first time in their lives. Haley will attend a new school this year, which means a new set of clothing guidelines, new expectations and rules, new supply requirements, and new grandparent/guardianteenage girl negotiations. Shirley had three adult sons before marrying Doug, who had two adult sons of his own from a previous marriage. They say that in the time between their children going to middle school
to Haley’s entrance into eighth grade, so much has changed. “Things are more expensive now. I don’t remember needing to buy five folders in different colors in each class; they require so much more now,” Shirley says. “I don’t remember buying reams of paper. I remember buying Kleenex, but now they also ask for Clorox wipes. The (school supply) list is longer, and the requirements for what they need at home are different. They need a computer to submit their papers now,]; they don’t just turn in a paper. We order her lunch electronically. We just have to make so many more decisions now.” Back-to-school season is now the second-biggest shopping season of the year, with 29 million households across the United States planning to spend a total of $27.6 billion, according to financial firm Deloitte. These spending figures exist in the context of other Census data that tell us that while most grandparents-as-parents are in the workforce, about 21 percent of them are in poverty, and about 39 percent have a disability. “I feel for grandparents who aren’t tech savvy or who don’t have access to computers or technology you require or where there’s a language barrier,” said Shirley, who is the director of financial operations at UNM’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. “A lot of information (from the school) comes through emails or PDFs you have to download.” Shirley says that when her children were young, she was a “poor, Hispanic single mom who couldn’t afford to do much for her kids.” Now, more financially stable and with a partner in Doug, she has chosen to invest in her granddaughter’s education in ways that she couldn’t before. She and Doug buy extra supplies for the classroom, and they reach out to Haley’s teachers to find out what needs they have to support education for Haley and her peers. She is also giving back to her community in ways that she knows would have been helpful to her as a single mother. At work, she renovated a supply closet by adding shelves and hangers, where she personally invites fellow UNM employees to find outfits and accessories for their children and grandchildren. She also delivers bags of curated outfits to single moms at her church. She does this, she said, because she knows that school shopping is overwhelming at every age, including for grandparents caring for a teenage girl. “I do because I can,” she said. “I call it Grandma Duty.”

eeping your kids on the road to safety when in and around a car can be easier if you take these steps:
What You Can Do First, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you should look for a car with these vehicle safety features: • Rear-view cameras • Interior trunk release • Side-impact air bags • Advanced frontal air bags • Push-down/pull-up window switches • Automatic door locks. Next, the NHTSA says, you should always remember to: 1. Use a car seat for every trip—even when you’re just going down the street. Select the car seat based on your child’s age and size, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure it’s compatible with your vehicle by checking the car seat manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Keep kids in the backseat at least through age 12. 3. Tell children not to play around vehicles. Before getting into a vehicle, check around and behind it, as well as the surrounding area, to ensure no children are present. 4. Buckle and lock any unused seat belts to keep kids from getting tangled up
in them. 5. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, no matter how short the stop, or what the weather is, even if the windows are cracked. The car can heat up very quickly in almost all weather conditions. Even with moderate outside temperatures in the mid-60s, a vehicle’s interior can quickly heat up to more than 110° F. In addition, if the ignition is on or the keys are in the ignition, children can accidentally cause the vehicle to roll or even drive away. What Can Help To prevent precious cargo from being left in cars, one company has come up with an ingenious Rear Door Alert (RDA) technology. An industry first, the system was developed by two mothers who are also engineers at Nissan. It monitors when the rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. The system responds with a series of notifications if a rear door was used prior to a trip but was not reopened after the trip. Once the vehicle is in park and the ignition is turned off, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel and progresses to distinctive chirps of the horn to remind drivers to check the backseat. Nissan’s RDA is easy to configure and can be temporarily or permanently turned off through a menu in the cluster display. Already available in the Nissan Pathfinder, for model year 2019, RDA will be standard equipment on eight other Nissan cars, including the best-selling Rogue and the all-new Altima.
