omen from the ages of 18 to 50 are the most active group of adult Internet and social media users. And even though women in this age group are less likely to get breast cancer than older women, it does happen. Now, three southern states are making sure these women have reliable online resources.

C O M M E N TA R Y Computer Scams Gain Sophistication: A Reporter Learns the Hard Way

never thought I’d be lured by a scam. I’m 46, well-educated, knowledgeable of current events, and I use computers and a smart phone constantly. It was unthinkable in my mind that anyone would pull one over on me – and then I clicked on an innocent looking website link during a Google search. The site not only froze my computer but also launched a sinister pop-up window, sounded a flurry of headache-inducing alarms and issued a robotic voice urgently warning in a looped recording that someone was working to suck out every bit of information on my machine and that the whole system would be totally dead in minutes unless I called Microsoft’s 800-number provided in the pop-up. As the unrelenting sirens wailed, sending all pets into hiding, I tried hitting the always reliable Ctrl+Alt+Delete combination on the keyboard; I pounded the Esc button; I clicked “Close” on the pop-up. Nothing silenced the pandemonium. It just kept blaring at me. The chaos was designed to unhinge its victim, and it worked. I thought about turning off the machine, but then I also figured it might not come back on. Fully panicked, what choice did I have but to call? I am embarrassed to say that I fell prey to a common computer scam called “tech-support fraud.” My husband thinks I should be more humiliated to admit that when the hijack occurred, I was Googling CMT’s release date for the next season of the 12-year reality TV series Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, which he haughtily refers to as “the worst show ever.” I now know that I should have simply unplugged or turned off my computer and waited a few minutes before turning it back on. Instead, here’s what happened when I reached “Microsoft”: A technician who sounded as if he were in India told me that my computer had been infected by a virus, that all my files were at risk, but to calm down, everything was going to be OK. Over the continued commotion, he said he would help me turn off the noise and kindly walk me through the steps to get things working properly and securely. He needed remote access to the device to do this. (OK, just make it stop!) He would also show me via diagnostics where the invasion had occurred so I could see the severity of the problem for myself before trusting him to move forward. I have no idea what he showed me, but he silenced my world, and I loved him for it. In hindsight, he had not produced proof of hacked files; nothing was wrong with my computer. After a few minutes, his requests and language grew more and more suspicious. I became increasingly uncomfortable that a lot of movement was happening on my screen that I didn’t understand and that he had complete control. I returned to my senses and completely shut down my internet connection at the wall. If he had been able to continue, experts say, it is likely one of two things would have occurred: 1) I would have been asked for a credit card to pay for unnecessary repairs or 2) the thieves would have installed “malware,” software that would help them gain access to accounts and private information. While I am clearly not all that tech-savvy, I did think of myself as scam-aware before this. I know not to give out credit card or financial information over the phone or in an email to anyone, to ignore emails from Nigeria and to hang up on the son I don’t have when he calls needing money in Europe. But this didn’t follow the same rules and clues of these longstanding scams that blatantly ask for something personal – and that are usually accompanied by poor grammar and spelling errors. This was more complex, more believable and is just one example of the increasingly sophisticated tactics being employed by scammers. “A 2016 global survey by Microsoft found that two out of three people experienced such a scam in the past year,” according to a cover article about scams in the June 2018 edition of Consumer Reports. The magazine quoted Courtney Gregoire, assistant general counsel for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, as saying, “We get approximately 13,000 complaints each month worldwide from consumers who have experienced tech-support scams by fraudsters claiming to be from legitimate tech companies.” Apple and Dell are two others frequently used in the heist. Nick Campbell, CEO of Diakonos Technology Group LLC in Albuquerque,

works with regulated industries in which information security is critical. His company boasts a combined 30+ years of experience in the IT field. He says, “People doing these are professionals. It’s their job to try to deceive and get what they can. Some are looking for information for ID theft that they can sell on the black market by getting remote access to your computer. Others are searching for financial information or they are installing remote software to keep track of your actions on the web.” Campbell says certain kinds of web searches lend themselves to tech-support fraud. Searches having to do with TV shows and movies are just one. (Indeed, thieves attempted to accost my machine again during a search for the Season 2 launch date of Anne with an E on Netflix. No, I did not fall for it a second time.) Others are searches for song lyrics. Earlier this summer, people trying to find spoilers for the next Avengers: Infinity Wars movie got hit with exploitive ads. “It’s not always necessary that a website is compromised, but the ads supporting it - hackers pay to run advertising on those sites,” Campbell said. He also advises against signing up for free stuff on the internet and using the same password for everything. While signing up for that free horoscope may in and of itself be safe, the information you give to the site – email, name, age, etc. – may be sold to a variety of companies. You aren’t paying in dollars for the service but it is costing you your privacy. If you have ever done this and days later started receiving emails from companies you have never heard of, that is probably why. If you are determined to go after the free stuff, you can protect yourself by creating a secondary, “throwaway,” email account that you don’t really use, providing the companies with that instead of your primary one, Campbell says. Using the same password for everything can be more problematic. Since usernames are typically always a person’s email address, that only leaves one denominator for scammers to unlock – the password. If they succeed with one of your “secure” sites, they’ll then be able to access all of them if the password is the same. To keep from having to remember a dozen or more passwords, Campbell suggests using a password manager. These are cloud-based and use militarygrade encryption to protect them. Cost is minimal to have them at your fingertips and safe from prying eyes. “You do give up a little convenience for more security,” Campbell said. “But more and more, information security needs to become more of a forethought than an afterthought.” If you think your computer’s security has been breached… Most reputable IT shops in town – such as Computer Corner, Sandia Computers and Computer Discounters - can educate you and evaluate your computer if you believe it has been compromised. For Box Internet Safety Tips • Never give remote access to your device to anyone you don’t know and trust completely. • Treat the internet as if someone with malintent is always watching for ways to obtain information about you. • Avoid clicking directly on web links that people send you in emails, even if you know the sender. It is safer to copy and paste the link into your browser bar so that you can see the full URL address. This helps you to see at a glance if the address is really for the site being represented. • Understand how web addresses work. The presence of “https” at the beginning indicates it is a secure site. • Be attentive to the domain identifier. For example, a site that ends in “.com” is known as a “top level” domain controlled by a known company, whereas a “.co” is not. This is not to say that unless a website ends in .com you shouldn’t open it; it just means that some caution should be exercised when the domain name is unfamiliar. *Tips provided by Nick Campbell, CEO of Diakonos Technology Group LLC.
