Helping The Helpers ccording to a recent Rand report, there are 5.5 million caregivers— family and friends—who look after those who are wounded, ill or injured as a result of their service to the country.
A
platform helps military families experiencing a crisis. The free, online, self-service tool lets them quickly communicate emergency messages 24/7 via computer, tablet or smartphone.
Thanks to the American Red Cross, these caregivers can now get some help themselves. “Being a caregiver is so often a daunting job,” said Melissa Comeau, Director of the Military and Veteran Caregiver Network (MVCN). Caregivers often experience many challenges without access to adequate support, which can lead to declining personal health, a greater strain on family relationships, or employment issues.
Through the MVCN, caregivers can reduce their isolation and increase their hopefulness, wellness, knowledge and skills. The network offers access to a peer mentor program, peer support groups online or in person, a resource library, a caregiver master calendar and an online magazine.
“Many times, caregivers find themselves alone—in need of guidance and advice or wanting to engage with someone who has shared similar experiences. That’s where the MVCN comes in,” Comeau explained.

DWIs) and instructing officers how to do so and (b) states that whether a person has a current address may not be the sole factor in determining whether to arrest rather than issue a citation; 2. issue an SOP requiring all officers to, whenever possible, obtain and record telephone numbers and email addresses from people to whom they issue citations, within 30 days after the State of New Mexico has issued an anticipated revised Uniform Traffic Citation form including such fields; 3. issue revised SOPs (to the extent that current SOPs may not be sufficiently clear in these regards) that (a) require officers to have reasonable suspicion before stopping, searching, asking for identification from, frisking, or searching people who appear to have a mental disability, and/or to be homeless; and (b) state that officers may seize or dispose of property or personal identification only when authorized by law to do so; 4. revise its SOP regarding responses to behavioral health issues; 5. implement all of these SOPs, including through training of city employees; 6. issue a public report regarding (a) the notation of phone numbers and email addresses on citations, (b) bookings on certain citable misdemeanor offenses; (c) disposition data for individuals involved in Crisis Intervention Team incidents; and (d) arrests arising from calls for service involving domestic violence; 7. continue to collaborate with Bernalillo County to develop jail diversion programs, to establish such programs, and to allocate resources to implement those programs, subject to appropriations; 8. meet with representatives of Bernalillo County four times before June 30, 2018, to explore the possibility of establishing teams comprised of mental health professionals who are not part of APD to provide mental health follow up and case management services; 9. continue to collaborate with Bernalillo County to develop and fund mobile crisis teams to respond to mental health calls, subject to appropriations; and 10. continue to provide approximately 700 supportive housing slots for people, including those with mental illness or disability who have been booked into the MDC, and collaborate with Bernalillo County about the opportunity for additional slots, subject to appropriations. The foregoing is a brief summary of the obligations of the City of Albuquerque under the proposed Settlement Agreement, the complete terms and conditions of which are available as set forth under the “GETTING MORE INFORMATION” heading below. The hearing is scheduled for September 11, 2017 at 1:30 pm at the United States Courthouse at 421 Gold Avenue SW, Sixth Floor. At the hearing, the Court will consider all timely written objections it has received directly, all objections that have been shared with counsel for the inmates, and all objections stated in open court during the hearing. After considering all objections and analyzing the settlement agreement to determine whether it is fair, the Court will decide whether to accept the settlement. Championing the Right to Age Well
I
n 1967, one of today’s most iconic runners made her mark in history. Despite an angry official who tried to push her off the course of the Boston Marathon, Kathrine Switzer defiantly ran on, broke barriers and became the first woman to officially complete the legendary race.

There are few things greater than sharing victories and accomplishments with someone close. Make time for rest. Equally as important as staying active is ensuring that your body recovers from the stress endured from physical activity. Not only will your body thank you, but you will grow to love your active lifestyle more without aches and pains holding you back. Switzer recently took her message to the National Senior Games presented by Humana, one example of how the company is committed to championing seniors and breaking barriers -- namely, the stereotypes associated with seniors in today’s society -- and proving that with a healthy body and mind, age is truly just a number. While at the Games, she participated in the 10K Road Race in a celebratory role and presented an inspiring and encouraging speech at the Celebration of Athletes.
Today, at the age of 70, Switzer continues to defy the odds. This year, she ran the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon again to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her historic milestone and continued to inspire others to break new ground. She also announced a partnership with the health and well-being company, Humana, to help celebrate seniors, encourage them to take an optimistic view of aging, and live healthy, active lifestyles. “When the Boston Marathon race director tried to shove me off the course in 1967, my life’s purpose was crystalized. I knew I wanted to be a champion for others committed to blazing their own path,” Switzer says. “I’m working with Humana to inspire seniors to achieve their best health, so they can experience all that life has to offer.” Switzer shared tips on how she maintains an optimistic outlook on aging, and why she believes that great things are ahead when your health is ready -- no matter what age you are! Don’t let your age define you. The biggest tip is to realize that you’re never too old, too slow or too out-of-shape to begin living an active lifestyle. Whether it’s walking the dog a bit further than usual, or taking a swim at the local health club -; finding ways to get active can help you live healthier and be more optimistic. Take it one step at a time. Allow time to adjust to a new routine. Start small and build on your efforts in small intervals. Listen to your body and be proud of your progress. Two is better than one. In 1972, she co-founded the first women’s-only road race; in 1984, she led the drive to get the women’s marathon into the Olympic Games; and in 2015, she founded 261 Fearless, a global non-profit that empowers and connects women through the transformative action of running, and encouraging them to overcome life obstacles and embrace healthy living. “I think optimism is everything and you don’t have to be a marathon runner to possess it,” Switzer says. “The more you do, the more you can do!” -NewsUSA
