It seems like Jessica has accomplished a lot in five years, even for an active 28-year-old. But what she’s achieved is even more impressive when you consider that she has lived these years with heart failure.
“In response to the contest call for entries, we were gratified to receive more than 250 video submissions from heart failure survivors sharing their personal LVAD stories,” said Michele Packard-Milam, CAE and executive director of Mended Hearts, the patient advocacy group that launched the “Thanks to an LVAD...” contest with support from St. Jude Medical. “These videos are helping inspire Americans with heart failure and raising awareness of LVAD therapy, an important treatment option that, often, is frustratingly overlooked.” Advanced heart failure cardiologist Susan Joseph, M.D., who served as one of the contest’s judges, says she regularly hears of patients who’ve been told they’re out of options, when, in fact, they are not. Dr. Joseph adds that LVADs are helping many people not only survive, but thrive.

n the past five years, Jessica Rogers has fished in Alaska, camped with friends, and held her newborn nephew. She also became engaged to the love of her life, and together, they bought and remodeled a home in the area north of Seattle where she lives.
In her words, Jessica has been able to “live out loud” during that time “thanks to an LVAD,” a phrase of gratitude and also the name of a national video contest that recently selected Jessica as its first-place winner. An LVAD, or “left ventricular assist device,” is a mechanical heart pump that circulates blood throughout the body when the heart is too weak to pump blood adequately on its own.

“The ‘Thanks to an LVAD...’ videos showed people enjoying life,” she said. “Many mentioned a renewed life, new engagements, new trips, being able to witness new births; reviewing these videos was very rewarding.” While there are risks associated with any open-heart procedure, including LVAD surgery, the American Heart Association estimates up to 100,000 advanced heart failure patients could benefit from an LVAD. However, there are approximately 2,000 heart transplants and 2,500 patients receiving LVADs in the U.S. each year, so the gap between the number who could potentially benefit and those who actually receive LVADs suggests a need for awareness, which Jessica hopes her video will help address. “When I learned about my heart failure, it helped to know there were others who understood how I felt,” said Jessica. “So now I try to be an example for others to encourage them that they can do this.” To view the contest’s winning videos and learn more about LVADs, visit www.ThanksLVAD.com. -(NAPSI)

The same vintage looks are available in laminate and luxury vinyl tile (LVT). The surfaces are created using high-resolution digital imaging and state-of-the-art embossing techniques. Designed to minimize repeats, they’re almost impossible to tell from the real thing—and significantly less expensive! Porcelain tiles feature salvaged looks such as oxidized metal and weathered wood. Tiles with dry, earthen textures and parched surface finishes in light to mid sun-baked shades and hazy grays are also popular. The beauty of the weathered look is that it pairs well with all interiors, does a wonderful job of hiding blemishes, and works well with both soft and bold color accents. Depth and Dimension The right flooring can make large spaces cozy and small spaces grand with long, wide planks and tiles. Also in step with toned-down looks are oil-finish hardwood floors, which are steadily gaining ground among designers and consumers. Natural oils penetrate the wood grain for a satinlike, zero-gloss appearance. In soft-surface flooring, highly affordable synthetics offer a more delustered look that mimics more expensive natural materials including wool, silk and cotton. The matte surface also works to mask vacuum marks and footprints. Concrete flooring offers soft and warm looks in muted grays, taupe and beige. Its versatility makes it complementary and adaptable to all kinds of interior settings. Another trend is to mix contrasting materials such as wood and tile. Though not possible with the “real thing” due to wood’s tendency to expand and contract, pairing wood and stone looks in porcelain creates a stunning effect. Tiles made to look like bricks are also popular. The laid-back “loft look” in porcelain is much easier to maintain than the real thing. The most basic of shapes, the stripe, is also appearing in all categories of flooring, especially soft surface. It appears frequently in the form of striated rock looks in weaves; in porcelain and glass, as mini finger tiles; and in vinyl, in looks that mimic linen, sedimentary rock and parquet. Carpet continues to get softer and more plush as technology advances. The latest look features layered color, soft texture and lots of dimension. Using another technique that combines both loops and sheared fibers, carpets are imbued with 3-D effects featuring multiple heights and colors ranging from subtle to bold. Growing in popularity are carpets and rugs in florals and foliage looks in shades of indigo, petrol, purple and green. Other new carpets show sculpted surfaces that look like sand dunes, ocean waves and tree bark. Modern Conveniences Beauty is important in floor coverings, but function is also key. Sleep Better at Night, Feel Better During the Day

leeping should be simple, but insomnia and other sleeping disorders prevent many people from getting the rest they need for good health. Internet data suggests that approximately 246,000 searches are done on “insomnia” per month, and 60 percent of American adults report having sleep-related problems several nights a week, according to the American Psychological Association.
In particular, Shambhavi Kriya can help improve sleep quality. A survey of participants in Inner Engineering showed that 84 percent reported improvements in insomnia symptoms with regular practice of Shambhavi Kriya.
Sleep is one form of rest, but not the only way to rest. In a recent study, adults who practiced Shambhavi Kriya had twice the amount of REM sleep (the deepest, most restful part of sleep) as those who didn’t practice.
