isa Chavez became worried when she noticed the choices she made while coping with stressful family circumstances were starting to affect her daughter’s health.

“I lost my mom in 2013 and when she was in the hospital, we would pick up fast food almost every day,” Chavez says. “I knew it wasn’t healthy, but it’s all I could do when I was caring for my mom along with taking care of my daughter and going to work.”

Her mom had died of obesity-related illness. Now, as her 7-year-old daughter Audrina started to put on an unhealthy amount of weight, she knew it was time for a change. “My choices are her choices,” she says. “She’s so young and so of course she’s going to follow what I do.”
The sessions start with a group exercise activity led by UNM exercise science students and fitness trainers. It’s a perfect opportunity for the families to exercise together and learn that fitness can be a fun activity for the entire family, Negrete says.
Chavez took her daughter to the University of New Mexico Healthy and Fit Children’s Clinic, a program that provides treatment for children and adolescents with overweight and obesity issues.
Following the exercise activity, experts and students from the UNM Nutrition program prepare and share a healthy meal and recipes with the families. As the families eat, a UNM nutrition expert talks about healthy options the families can try at home and what to look for when grocery shopping.
The clinic, led by Sylvia Negrete, MD, offers patients a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of medical, nutritional, behavioral and physical therapy providers as well as access to other pediatric subspecialists. Negrete, an associate professor of pediatrics in the UNM School of Medicine, saw the need for a program that provided more services and resources for the entire family when it came to preventing and treating childhood obesity. This prompted her to partner the clinic with the Live Fit Family Challenge Program, which is led by a group of nurses and nutritionists. “I was treating children in the inpatient and outpatient setting, but realized there wasn’t much out there for families outside the clinics,” Negrete says. “There were no affordable services out there to help keep the entire family continually engaged with living healthier lives.” The Live Fit Family Challenge brings families together for 2 ½ hours each week for nine consecutive weeks to learn about healthy eating and exercise. They gain tips and information from UNM experts in fields such as exercise science and nutrition.

The program also spends time talking about medical problems associated with overweight and obesity such as Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, hyperten sion, high cholesterol and obstructive sleep apnea. Each family is provided with a binder filled with exercise activities and meal plans to use at home. It includes a section where families can keep track of their progress. Most notably, the program is bilingual in both English and Spanish and is free of charge to all patients. Lisa, Audrina and her step sister Rosemarie are now part of the Live Fit Family Challenge. Lisa said that since making healthier choices she has lost 40 pounds and she notices a difference in Audrina as well. “I really like this program because it’s very family oriented,” said Lisa. “The exercising can be hard, but I want her (Audrina) to be motivated so I do the exercises, too. We motivate each other.”

Rio Grande Nature Center Completing Early Advocates’ Vision

lbuquerque has numerous places to engage in nature study. From the Sandias on the east to the volcanoes on the west, the city enjoys thousands of acres of undeveloped property that could have become more sprawling neighborhoods without the efforts of visionaries who advocated open spaces as early as the 1960s. One of earliest parcels protected is the Rio Grande Nature Center, where 200,000 visitors embrace their wild heritage annually. Although construction of the RGNC’s visitors’ center building finished in 1982, facility development has continued. A new ADA-compliant viewing platform is now available for visitors. New projects, however, are built on the backs of those who, in the 1960s, were striving to save the volcanoes, the arroyos, the Sandias and the Rio Grande Bosque. OPEN SPACE TASK FORCE Ultimately, the advocacy groups were combined into the City of Albuquerque’s Open Space Task Force. Formed in 1975, the task force set to work and before the end of the decade Albuquerque owned 4,000 acres on the West Mesa, including all five remnant volcanoes, 1,000 acres in the Sandia foothills and 177 acres in the North Valley, once known as Candelaria Farms. The City still owns Candelaria Farms, but the property is leased to the State Parks Division, which manages the Nature Center. Dave Johnson was the planner for New Mexico’s State Parks in 1977. He is now retired and living in Durango, Colo., but he remembers those early days when an environmental education center in the middle of New Mexico’s largest city was a dream pushed by Carol Kinney, the wife of then-mayor Harry Kinney, and other city residents. “A developer already had platted the farm with houses and streets,” Johnson says, “and he was confident he could outbid the public agencies who were interested in Candelaria Farms. He knew we could only pay ap-
praised value. The heirs to the farm, however, thought it was important to preserve the acres as open space, Johnson says. Those acres are still farmed, and a percentage of the crop is left in the fields to feed migrating Sandhill Cranes and other migratory birds. Those birds are visible from the new, elevated viewing blind. SHOW ME THE MONEY The City used federal Land and Water Conservation Fund money to buy the property, and the State’s contribution was to build a park there. Johnson wrote the Request for Proposals for an architect, and the now worldfamous Antoine Predock won the contract. The visitors’ center is nestled among large cottonwoods and adjacent to a manmade pond. It is the first pond Johnson ever designed, and he says he wasn’t sure he could keep the liner submerged. He figured it out, and visitors now watch Canada geese, wood ducks, mallards, ring neck ducks, pied-billed grebes and American coots there almost every day. Three species of teal -redheads, canvasbacks and wigeon - are regular migrants. For Beth Dillingham, an Albuquerque native who manages this park, the Nature Center is a testimonial to the vision and caring its original founders brought to the planning. “To me, it represents such a wonderful thing about this community at that time,” she says. “It’s so inspiring that they did this, that they cared so much about their children and all of us that they protected all this beauty.” Johnson credits Hy and Joan Rosner, and Rex Funk as strong leaders who pushed for the Nature Center. Mathew Schmader, the City’s Open Space Division director, also gives credit to Dick Kirschner, Harvey Frauenglass, Homer Milford, and Orlie Sedillo who deserve kudos for the success of the Nature Center and Albuquerque’s open spaces. The new viewing platform was funded largely by private donations from the Kapner Estate and the Lumpkin Foundation. More people and families wanted Albuquerque and its citizens to continue to see and learn about the Bosque, its birds and plants, its past and future.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, they say, isn’t about shortterm dietary changes. It’s about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity. In addition, many nutrition experts agree that meat and poultry should be part of a balanced diet and can help satisfy hunger and control weight while delivering key nutrients people need. Twelve Reasons To Eat Meat And Poultry 1. Protein. Naturally and completely. Protein found in meat and poultry is “complete” because it contains all the amino acids essential for health. Animal proteins are complete proteins, points out the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 2. Iron rich. Meat, fish and poultry contain heme iron, which helps prevent anemia because the body absorbs this iron better than the nonheme iron found in plant foods such as vegetables. Heme iron foods, reports the National Institutes of Health, also help the body absorb nonheme iron found in plant foods. 3. Bioavailable nutrition. Heart health. Australian research published in The American Society for Clinical Nutrition shows that lean meat protein could help maintain healthy cardiovascular function. 8. Blood sugar control. An article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, which could include lean meat and poultry, can help to control blood sugars. 9. Zinc immunity. Researchers also found that zinc helps maintain optimal immune function and promotes wound healing. Beef is the top dietary source of zinc. 10. Selenium rich. A serving of beef or lamb delivers about half your daily selenium needs. Selenium is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage, promotes proper thyroid function and may contribute to cancer prevention, reports the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. 11. Weight management. New Ways to Layer Lighting With LEDs

According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), appropriate interior lighting will diminish shadows, accentuate textures and draw attention to just the right areas.
To guarantee that you enjoy a room, the lighting should be easy to navigate and easy on the eyes. This is usually the job of ambient (general) lighting. To complement all-purpose lighting, LED lights have traditionally been used in the subsequent layers of accent and task lighting. It is with accent lighting that LED lights may be the most useful.
Until relatively recently, conventional lighting techniques relied on a select few types of lighting to effectively layer the lighting in a room. Now LED lighting -- deemed safer, sturdier and more durable than CFL light bulbs by the Department of Energy - is becoming a go-to lighting source for all areas of the home. Three layers of light. Layered lighting makes use of three main lighting functions: general, accent and task lighting. A wide wash of light is usually exerted by a ceiling light for general illumination. A decorative layer of light might come from sconces or a table lamp. For specific tasks, pendants and undercabinet lighting are a couple of examples of appropriate lighting. The concept of layering the three lighting types remains true, but the idea behind layering itself is changing as much as the light sources themselves are. For example, “track lighting is often used for accent lighting so the lighted area can be easily adjusted in size, color or direction,” says McGowan. “Note that some new types of LED track lighting can be adjusted by hand to change the color or size of the light beam, and there are even fixture types with built-in adjusting systems that can be operated by a remote control or a cell phone app. “For all layers,” McGowan continues, “consider controls that not only turn the lighting on and off, but dim it as well. LEDs can be easily dimmed, and, almost as easily, their color can be controlled so that the lighting can match the time of day or the preferred appearance of the space.” Using adjustable lights ensures that a room can uphold a unique design element, yet will not be overly flooded with light.
