ccording to a survey by HomeAway®, the world leader in vacation rentals, more than 90 percent of people say that vacation is very important to them. Yet half of leisure travelers who wanted to take a trip in 2017 did not, primarily because they didn’t think they could afford it. Costs can add up quickly, especially for big families and other large groups that book multiple hotel rooms. Three Steps Toward A Better Retirement In 2018

or seniors who have already entered retirement, there are some important things that can be done in 2018 to make it better and more fulfilling:
1. Consider your spending. Create a budget and track your expenses. Most experts say you’ll need at least 70 to 80 percent of your current income to live the same lifestyle in retirement, so after you figure what you’ll get from Social Security and any other income sources, you’ll need to create a nest egg that can throw off that much without your having to use any of the principal. Also, your retirement can last for a good long time. According to AARP, a healthy, upper-middle-class couple who are 65 today have a 43 percent chance that one or both partners will live to see 95. Financial planners now advise that you withdraw no more than 3.5 percent a year out of your savings for both your regular expenditures and one-time items like a new roof or a big vacation for the money to be around as long as you are. 2. Take that dream trip while you can. Research by Joseph K. Goodman of Washington University in St. Louis, and Sarah Lim at Seoul National University, South Korea, among others, shows experiences bring more happiness than things. You want to get in as many good times as you can while your health holds out. Another impetus: Many hotels, resorts, restaurants, attractions and tour operators offer special discounts for older travelers. For example, for less than $100 you can get a lifetime pass that lets you enjoy every national park
in the country. Ask when you book about discounts for seniors and you may save enough for an extra trip or two. 3. Inventory your assets for sources of cash. For example, take a good look at any life insurance policy you no longer need. It could be sold for a significantly greater amount than the policy’s cash surrender value through something called a Life Settlement. You get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments in exchange for the benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. Such a sale could improve retirement for many, yet fewer than half of American seniors are aware of the option. Hot Tips To Help You Avoid Home Heating Fires

eating equipment is the second-leading cause of home fires in the United States. More than 65,000 home fires are attributed to heating equipment each year. Following these Dos and Don’ts, however, can help protect your home and family: Do have a qualified service professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to code and manufacturer’s instructions and then have the system inspected annually. Don’t use your stove to heat your home or dry your clothes. Do install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and test them monthly. Don’t plug a space heater into an extension cord. Do plug it directly into an electric outlet. Don’t leave any heating appliance unattended. Do turn heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don’t use a space heater or any appliance with a damaged cord. Do place any heater at least three feet away from anything flammable. Don’t use old, worn heating pads or electric blankets with frayed cords. These cause almost 500 fires a year, almost all of them involving electric blankets that are more than 10 years old.
Do place heaters on level, flat surfaces on the floor, not on tables, shelves or chairs. Don’t use both a heating pad—placed directly on the mattress—and an electric blanket at the same time. Do keep heating pads and electric blankets uncovered when in use. When covered by anything, including other blankets or pets, electric blankets may overheat. Don’t fold electric blankets when in use. Folded or tucked-in blankets could overheat and cause a fire. Do keep a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. Don’t use the wrong kind of fuel for fuel-burning space heaters. Do make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to shovel out the ashes. Let them cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. Heed The Recall: Get Your FREE Airbag Repair

f it hasn’t happened already, your car dealer may call asking you to bring your vehicle to the dealership for a FREE urgent recall repair. For your own good and that of your passengers, you should do so. The Problem Some vehicles have airbags that do not function properly. Dealers have replacement airbags available and are urging affected vehicle owners to get their vehicles fixed for FREE. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the airbags installed in tens of millions of U.S. vehicles are subject to recall due to a safety defect that may cause the airbag to explode and cause serious injury or death.
What You Can Do Consider the following steps on the road to safety: 1. Visit recalls.mopar.com to find out if your car or truck is under recall. Search using your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You can find it on the lower left (driver’s side) of your vehicle’s windshield, on your car’s registration card or your insurance card. 2. Call your dealer to schedule the FREE repair. 3. Call the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and RAM dedicated toll-free customer care center at (866) 220-6765. They can help you with finding a nearby dealer, assist in obtaining alternate transportation while your car is being fixed, and update ownership information if you no longer own the vehicle. That way, you could save the life of whoever does have it now.
