hether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, you don’t have to let fatigue, jet lag or aggravation from dealing with the transportation system keep you from feeling your best. Here are five steps toward better sleep, a better trip and even better productivity and relationships. 1. Create optimal conditions to support good sleep. If you’re on a plane, train or bus, try to get a window seat if possible; it will give you something to lean against and you won’t have to move each time neighbors need the bathroom. When you stop for the night, ask for a cool, quiet room, at least two or three levels above banquet rooms, bars or other public spaces and away from elevators. Look to book a room with blackout shades or heavy, thick curtains that keep the light out. Make sure everything is ready for the next day so you don’t lie awake worrying about it. 2. Dealing with time zones. If you’re crossing multiple time zones, try to arrange meetings, parties and major sightseeing for when it’s midday in your home time. 3. Get set with supplies. Handy items can include: • A supportive neck pillow in a U shape • Eyeshades • Soft silicone earplugs or noise-canceling earphones • A blanket • A white noise app or a playlist of your favorite music to snooze to on your phone.

4. When you get to your destination, try to expose yourself to the light during the waking hours as much as possible during the first couple of days. Avoid caffeine at least four to six hours before bedtime and have dinner at least three hours before you want to sleep. Bear in mind that although alcohol may initially make you drowsy, when its sedating properties wear off, the rebound can contribute to you awakening too early, making it more difficult to fall back to sleep. 5. Whether away or at home, you’ll sleep better if you stop the use of electronic devices 30 minutes before bed. The light from these devices signals your brain that it is still daytime, which interferes with your brain’s production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you feel sleepy. In fact, slow down in general during that last half hour. Read something calming, listen to quiet music, take a bath, stretch a little. Don’t watch anything too stimulating on television, especially the news. Majority Of Registered Voters Overlook Cybersecurity Concerns While On Summer Vacation, According To University Of Phoenix Survey

martphones have become a bodily extension for most Americans. U.S. World & News Report found that nearly a quarter of the population of the U.S. has a smartphone—fourth in the world. We take our devices with us everywhere—work, home, even on vacation-but the devices in our pockets may be putting us at risk of cybertheft when we least expect it. According to a survey by the University of Phoenix College of Information Systems and Technology, less than half of registered voters worry about cybersecurity risks while on vacation and 55 percent feel that the need to use personal devices outweighs the risks. Technology experts from the University say vacations are a prime time for hackers to target our personal information through our devices, due to our leniency for cybersecurity best practices. While summer vacation is often seen as a time to disconnect, threefourths of respondents say they bring their smartphone with them and half report checking their phone at least once an hour. These actions can put them at risk for data breaches, especially if they are connected to public Wi-Fi. Despite using their devices often, very few people admit to taking measures to prevent hackers from potentially accessing personal information: 54 percent state they lock devices when not in use, but less than half take other precautions such as hiding devices when away (40 percent) or strengthening passwords (24 percent). “There are myriad ways your personal information can be compromised while you’re on vacation,” said Dr. Kirsten Hoyt, academic dean, College of Information Systems and Technology at University of Phoenix. “Vacations should be relaxing and fun, but in today’s world of connected devices, we always have to be alert.” According to the survey, stolen bank information is the top concern while traveling, selected by more than half of respondents. Other major concerns include losing devices (48 percent) and contracting viruses on devices (44 percent), while a third or less are concerned about hacked email or social media accounts.
Hoyt said the best method to prevent our data from being compromised or stolen is to understand how hackers target our information and what they’re looking for and take the proper steps to avoid that from happening. Dr. Hoyt suggests the following practices to stay secure during summer vacation. • Refrain from posting photos or information about your trip until you return home. • Update antivirus software and ensure devices are locked with strong passwords when not in use. • Keep devices close by and lock them in a safe or hide them if you have to leave them in the hotel room. • Use your phone’s hotspot if you need to access public Wi-Fi, and never share personal information on or plug devices into public computers. The content posted online while traveling can also have implications for your home, according to Dr. Hoyt. She said cyberthieves sometimes monitor social media accounts to know when you are away to break into your home. Hackers who know you’re on vacation can also use that information to send phishing e-mails to attempt to trick friends, family members or colleagues into sending money or sharing personal information, if they get access to your account. “We shouldn’t be afraid to travel. In reality, we are probably just as likely to be the target of a cyberattack at home as when we are traveling,” she said. “But in today’s connected world, we must constantly be aware. Knowing how hackers attack, what they’re looking for and how to stop them is your best defense in today’s cyberwar.” -NAPSI

Two Keys To Protecting Water Wells From Contamination
ver 15 million U.S. households rely on private, household wells for drinking water, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. If your family is ever among them, you should know how to protect your water quality. Two of the most important considerations are a proper well cap and plugging any abandoned wells on your property, advises the National Ground Water Association. Why Cap A Well If an active water well is not capped properly—or if an abandoned well is not plugged properly—it can be a direct pathway for contamination from above the ground to groundwater used by well owners for drinking. Private well owners are responsible for making sure their wells are properly capped and any abandoned wells on their property are properly plugged. What makes for a properly capped water well? Not just any covering will do on top of the well casing, that vertical pipe that extends above the ground in a water well. A proper well cap should: • Be bolted or locked, so it cannot be easily removed • Have a rubber seal to prevent anything from infiltrating the well where the cap is joined to the well casing • Be in good condition. A well cap that lacks a rubber seal or is cracked or otherwise broken can allow bugs, vermin, bacteria or other types of contaminants above the ground surface into the well, while even a tight-fitting well cap that is not bolted or locked can be jarred loose or removed by someone other than the well owner. Well caps should be installed by a water well system professional and any well cap maintenance or replacement should be done by a professional. Also, a well system should be disinfected when a well cap is installed, repaired or replaced. How To Plug An Abandoned Well It can sometimes be a challenge to find abandoned wells on your property. Some abandoned wells are less obvious than others. Look for: • Pipes sticking out of the ground
• Small buildings that may have been well houses • Depressions in the ground • Concrete vaults or pits • Out-of-use windmills • Additions to an old home that might cover up an abandoned well. Old, abandoned wells can also be found by consulting your neighbors and old maps, property plans or property title documents. A water well system professional may do additional checking—including a records check—for more information about abandoned wells. To properly plug an abandoned well, the professional should: 1. Remove all material from the well that may hinder proper plugging 2. Disinfect the well 3. Use a specialized grout that both keeps surface water from working its way into the borehole and prevents water from different levels in the subsurface from mixing. How Much Will It Cost? my is a typical millennial: She’s 23, she graduated from college two years ago, she pays $321 in student loan debt every month and she rents an apartment in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. She’s a sales manager for an international food distribution company and volunteers as an English tutor every week. She loves bike riding, playing her guitar, Saturday brunch and beer tastings.

She also said that I can obviously stay focused and live within a budget,” Amy noted. Credit history started when she was 16. Thanks to her mom’s advice, Amy applied for a credit card when she was still in high school, used it and then paid it off every month. Amy’s credit score is now a highly respectable 771.
