Ending The Tragedy Of ‘Family Fire’
O
n the battlefield, one of the greatest tragedies is “friendly fire,” and the military does everything in its power to avoid these incidents through rigorous training, constant communication, and a deadly serious focus on the safe use of weapons. All Americans would be wise to look to our military professionals as an example of how to solve the tragedy of “family fire” in this country. Nearly 3,000 kids are shot every year by guns that come from within our homes. While these tragedies are hard to think about, there is much we can do to keep our families safe. As a Marine Corps combat veteran and lifelong gun owner, I enjoy firearms and marksmanship. Guns are a big part of military culture. Many of my civilian friends also enjoy shooting, and all of us are alarmed by the number of gun deaths each year in America. What is especially hard for me to understand are the preventable deaths caused by negligent gun owners who improperly store their firearms. Family fire rips apart families and shatters whole communities, and so much more can be done to stop it.

ver the last few months I’ve warned of the dangers of excessive sun exposure. This month I’d like to highlight some of the benefits of limited sun exposure. Let’s start with the production of vitamin D. The most natural way to get vitamin D is by exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B rays). This can happen very quickly, particularly in the summer. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin to get vitamin D. You only need to expose your skin for around half the time it takes for your skin to begin to burn. How much vitamin D is produced from sunlight depends on the time of day, where you live in the world and the color of your skin. The more skin you expose, the more vitamin D is produced. How can you tell if the sun and your skin are interacting in a productive manner so that vitamin D is made? UVB light is the only type of light that can stimulate vitamin D production, but it is often blocked by our atmosphere and may never reach our skin. Ozone, pollution, glass, clothing and sunscreen block UVB’s ability to reach our skin surface and thus prevent vitamin D production. (UVA light, the “aging rays,” pass through the atmosphere easily and can harm us even on cloudy or wintry days.) To optimize vitamin D production, the sun must be at an angle of approximately 50 degrees or greater above the horizon (90 percent would be directly overhead). The closer to overhead the sun is, the greater its potential for stimulating vitamin D production (and the less time you have to be in the sun to produce a given amount of it). It has been estimated that just 15 minutes of sun in the middle of the day in the summer, only a few times per week, can be sufficient for you to produce your complete vitamin D needs. This is true for people with fair skin in ideal conditions; darker-skinned individuals may need longer exposure time. A couple of warnings are necessary. UVB can also damage your skin, and if you over expose yourself, vitamin D production can actually stop. It also doesn’t matter what part of your skin is producing your vitamin D. It therefore is recommended that you expose the large areas of your body that don’t normally get very much sun, and cover the parts that are often
in the sun (such as hands and wrists, face, neck and shoulders) to protect them. In this way, you can maximize your vitamin D production without further damaging the sensitive areas of your skin that are already most likely over-exposed. You can also alternate exposing your front and back to decrease the damage to any one area of your body. Remember only about seven to eight minutes per side. What is all this excitement about vitamin D, anyway? We all think of vitamin D as the “bone health” vitamin. While it is true that adequate stores of it assist in the absorption of calcium, it is also responsible for enhancement of muscle contraction. Thus, vitamin D is vitally important in the prevention of falls and has been shown to do so in older individuals. Vitamin D also plays a role in the immune system. The immune system is your body’s defense system, protecting it against infections and other illnesses. New studies are suggesting Vitamin D might play a role in cancer prevention specifically colon, prostate and breast cancers. In addition, there are some studies linking vitamin D deficiency to Parkinson’s disease and depression. Too little vitamin D in children can result in a condition called Ricketts. Inadequate vitamin D in adults can lead to osteomalacia (soft bone) as a result of bone demineralization. Vitamin D toxicity, on the other hand, can result from overzealous replacement. This is usually caused by taking mega-doses of vitamin D supplements - not by diet or sun exposure. Your body regulates the amount of vitamin D produced by sun exposure. Even fortified foods don’t contain amounts of vitamin D sufficient enough to cause toxicity. The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness and frequent urination. Symptoms might progress to bone pain and the formation of kidney stones. However, before embarking on any trip to the “vitamin store” please consult your health care provider.

It’s fun to Volunteer with the 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games!

t’s time for fun-loving New Mexicans who belong to school groups, civic organizations, church groups or any other non-profit entities to volunteer for the 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games. The games require about 500 volunteers to run like clockwork, said New Mexico Senior Olympics volunteer coordinator, Wendy Luck. The State Summer Games will be held July 18-22, 2018 in locations around Albuquerque. Luck explained that volunteers can register for at least one four-hour shift in one of several areas; most volunteers so enjoy the Games they sign up for several shifts. Volunteers are needed for game support, fruit and water distribution, souvenir sales, results posting and athlete check-in. All volunteers will be provided with advance training during one of several orientation sessions held ahead of the Games. New Mexicans with specific knowledge of certain sports, including track, swimming, badminton or tennis, can volunteer to judge those sports or to interact directly with senior athletes during the events. Volunteering for the State Summer Games is rewarding and fast-paced. It’s open to anyone who is at least 16 years old and participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag, a certificate, and an invitation to attend the kick-off party before the Games. Volunteers who participate in the 2018 State Summer Games will also have the first shot at volunteering for the much larger 2019 National Senior Games. The National Senior Games are being held for the first time ever in Albuquerque June 14-25, 2019. The National Senior Games -- which attracts approximately 10,500
athletes and an additional 15,000 fans from around the country -- will require more than 3,500 game volunteers. New Mexico Senior Olympics has made it easy to sign up as a group, said Wendy Luck said. Volunteers can sign up online. Go to nmseniorolympics. org and click on the “Volunteers” tab in the upper right-hand corner. From there, click on the link to pull up the directions to register. The State Summer Games is a 24-sport annual competition for men and women age 50 and older. It is the largest multi-sport competition in New Mexico for active seniors. Athletes compete in 5-year age divisions. Sports include Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Talent, Tennis, Track & Field and Triathlon. There is no pre-qualifying to register for the State Games. This is a qualifying year for 2019 National Senior Games. Late registration is $75 and available June 1- 15, 2018. The mission of the New Mexico Senior Olympics is to promote physical fitness for New Mexico adults 50 + and provide year-round motivation to participate in local, state, and national games. The mites don’t have a good common name, though a few folks back East call them “concrete” mites, and they are probably found throughout the country. At least now we know they are found in New Mexico. These mites feed mainly on pollen, so when we have moderate or high pollen counts, they come out in large numbers. You can see them running around on sidewalks and patios feeding on pollen. They will be found on all surfaces where pollen lands, including lawns. These mites also bite, may cause a rash and have a natural resistance to pesticides. In fact, there are no pesticides labeled for use against these mites as they haven’t found one that works. The good news is that you can kill these mites with homemade remedies. If you are getting bitten outside, I would recommend hosing off all sidewalks and patios to wash any mites back into the yard. If you have to work in the yard, you can spray it with a mixture of four tablespoons of buttermilk, a cup of all-purpose flour and a gallon of water. Spray any area you need to work in. The mixture will suffocate any mites it comes in contact with. You can also dust any areas of the yard with food grade diatomaceous earth, which can be obtained at
a feed store. Pesticides are useless in dealing with these mites and potentially dangerous to you, your family and your pets. These mites will also come into homes if there is a lot of pollen near the home. All you have to do is wipe them up with soap and water. When the pollen season is over, the mites will feed on other species of mites, including spider mites, so they can actually be beneficial in some circumstances. If you have a pest problem of any kind, I will help you solve it without using synthetic pesticides. Just tell me what the pest is, if you know it, where it is in your house and what it is doing. If you are not sure what it is, you may need to send me some samples. Once it is known, I will tell you what, if anything, you need to control it, how to apply it and what you need to do to prevent a re-infestation. If you have termites or some other wood destroying insect, then you need a professional. I can recommend a couple of good companies. Keep Kids Busy With A Summertime PLAYlist
W
hen school’s out, it’s up to parents and caregivers to keep kids busy. Instead of waiting to hear the dreaded “I’m bored,” families can be prepared with fun activities to ensure children are playing and learning all vacation long.
• Camping—No need to go far. Gather all the camping essentials, such as flashlights, sleeping bags, s’more ingredients and a pop-up tent, head to the living room or the backyard and set up camp for the night.
According to experts at The Genius of PlayTM, a national movement to encourage more play in children’s lives, research shows that play is not only critical to healthy child development—it’s an important teaching tool. Through play, kids build physical skills, improve cognitive abilities, learn communication and social skills, process and express emotions, and increase creativity.
• Rock art—Whether used as decorations or to leave kind messages around the neighborhood, rock art is a trendy and easy craft. Have kids collect rocks of various shapes and sizes, and once the rocks are clean, use acrylic paint to decorate them.
Meredith Sinclair, author and The Genius of Play Ambassador, suggests writing activities on popsicle sticks and placing them in a play jar to create a PLAYlist of fun ideas. Whenever children are bored or need inspiration, encourage them to select from the play jar to stir up their creativity. To help get your PLAYlist started, Sinclair recommends the following activities: • Grow a garden—A fun, educational way to let kids get dirty is by having them start their very own vegetable garden. They’ll love planting the seeds to watch them grow.
