arents don’t hesitate to talk to their teenagers about driving safely, but no one is talking to seniors. Many older people rely on driving for the independence and freedom to go where they want, when they want. The idea of giving up driving sparks feelings of anger, anxiety and loneliness. Though many drivers can continue to drive safely as they get older, physical and cognitive changes may put older adults in jeopardy on the road. Developing an objective process to assess a loved one’s driving abilities, communicate concerns, and plan ways to transition driving practices can help take the emotion out of the situation. To help families start the dialogue, occupational therapist and senior driving expert Elin Schold Davis offers five suggestions. 1. Do all you can to keep a safe driver safer. For example, explore the CarFit program, an educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed with the American Automobile Association, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, available at www.car-fit.org. CarFit is designed to help older drivers find out how well their personal vehicles suit them and highlight actions they can take to improve. 2. Get the facts. Any decisions about driving cessation should be based on

data, and seniors deserve to have more than just opinions influencing whether or not they can continue to drive. Get the facts with evaluations from medical professionals, such as a physical or vision exam. Encourage your loved one to take a driving self-assessment. 3. Listen and communicate. Listen to your loved one’s concerns to help understand and develop a plan with which he or she feels comfortable. 4. Create a plan with plenty of alternatives. When you get to the root of an aging adult’s concerns, it’s easier to create a plan that meets his or her needs. For example, if isolation is a concern, look into public transportation or consider friends or family members who are willing to drive. 5. Explore new technologies. Assistive technologies, such as emergency response systems, smart headlights, and blind spot warning systems, keep older drivers safer on the road. A new survey by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, found that 95 percent of surveyed seniors have not talked to their loved ones about driving. July 4 Patriots Cool Off at Eagle Nest on U.S. 64

AGLE NEST, NM – Miners may have started the mountain communities of Red River, Idlewild and Eagle Nest, but it was the Great Plains farmers of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas who kept those towns alive. To escape the summer heat of the plains, farmers moved their families to the mountains and then visited when the work allowed. Escaping the heat remains the connection between today’s campers and those pioneers of the past. Many of those refuges for farm children are now lovely estates, and river meadows have been replaced with motels and lodges. Those of us who don’t have the funding for a palace, however, still have the option of cooling off during the summer at Eagle Nest in the Moreno Valley, which offers roughly 400 campsites. Eagle Nest has about that many fulltime residents. If there is a best time to visit Eagle Nest, it is the week or weekend that includes the 4th of July because the wildflowers are in bloom, the rains are just getting started, and the entire Moreno Valley comes together for a great patriotic parade down U.S. 64. There is also a spectacular fireworks show at Eagle Nest Lake State Park. A DAY ON THE HIGHWAY Just as the famous and more southern U.S. 66 dominates travelers from Tucumcari to Gallup, U.S. 64 is the sinew that holds tiny Eagle Nest together, especially on the Fourth. The holiday parade, which starts at 2 p.m., moves right through town on U.S. 64. Anyone who wants to watch the evening fireworks at Eagle Nest Lake needs to find a vacant spot on U.S. 64 before the sun goes down; vehicles and lawn chairs claim the best viewing locations.

the Eagle Nest Volunteer Fire Department stands side-by-side with State Parks employees to make sure there are no accidental fires. That makes for a very long day for the first responders, who spend their daylight hours on the 4th preparing a barbecue lunch that raises money for their fire-fighting efforts. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. THERMA Laura Bowers of the Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce says this July 4th children will have an opportunity to participate in bubble blowing, cake walks and other activities during the day at Enchanted Eagle Park in town. Adults may get the opportunity to enjoy a beer garden at the park as well, Bowers says. Scattered across town are signs describing the history of Eagle Nest, originally called Therma between 1920 and 1935. The signs depict the town’s development from miners to ranchers and ultimately to a place where recreation rules the roost. The Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce sponsors a fishing festival later in September. Anglers at Eagle Nest Lake are required to keep all the northern pike they catch, and the limit for trout and salmon is five per day. At an elevation of 8,362 feet, Eagle Nest can be chilly if you get caught by a summer rain. If campers do not pack enough warm clothes for the evening fireworks, they may peruse Angels’ Attic on U.S. 64 across from Enchanted Eagle Park for new-to-you garments and other souvenirs. Angels’ Attic is managed by the Angel Fire Baptist Church, and the money raised supports a variety of missions in the Moreno Valley and elsewhere.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park was established July 3, 2004. Due to its cooler, wetter climate, this park stays open even during the state’s recurring droughts that ignite fire restrictions and shut down camping in other New Mexico parks and forests.

Call the town Therma, or call it Eagle Nest, this is one of the great places to cool off during New Mexico’s hot summer months. Whether you go to watch the parade, watch the fireworks or just escape the heat, this is a place that’s hard to beat.

Spiders Are Very Effective Exterminators By The Bugman

M

ost people don’t realize they are renting out space in their home to a dozen or more unnoticed spiders. Do they pay rent? Of course they do. They have to eat, and they will eat all the bugs they can find in your home, eliminating them in a more efficient fashion than someone who sprays toxic pesticides all over the place. These little tenants will live under furniture, in closets, in corners, basements, attics and garages. If you have storage sheds or other buildings, they will rent space in there, too, and pay for their presence by reducing your unwanted bugs. Many of them will live out their entire lives without meeting their landlords. Of course if you are afraid of spiders, you may want to evict them so you can relax. A lot of people have a fear of spiders, but you can change that if you want. When I first started in the bug business more than 40 years ago, I had a morbid fear of spiders. I don’t know if it rose to the level of clinical arachnophobia, but I certainly didn’t want to be around them. Arachnophobia comes from the Greek words, “Arachne,” meaning spider, and “phobos,” meaning “a fear.” The fear of spiders may have had its roots in Europe during the Middle Ages. Spiders were considered a source of contamination, and any food that came into contact with them was considered poisoned. If they fell into the water, it was thought to be undrinkable. Spiders were originally thought to spread the plague (Black Death) by biting people. Fear of the plague clouded people’s perceptions of the spiders, and they were blamed for all sorts of illnesses and epidemics simply because they were present. The fear of spiders has persisted in our society for a long time, and it is actually promoted by the pesticide industry. Many companies want to

“control” spiders by spraying your home with pesticides. They are actually preying on your natural fear of spiders. I am not a psychologist and will not try to tell you how to overcome your fear of spiders if you have such a fear. I will tell you what worked for me. When I got into the bug business in 1972, I didn’t know a cockroach from a caterpillar, and I was deathly afraid of spiders. The first time I had to crawl under a house, I was paralyzed with fear. I decided then and there if I was going to be successful, I would have to overcome the fear. I started by reading all the literature I could about spiders. I watched them spin their webs and stalk their prey. We didn’t have computers in those days, so it would be easier now to study them. Finally, after several weeks I let one crawl on me. Oddly enough it didn’t bite me and I didn’t have a heart attack. I went under houses and crawled through their webs. It was a bit disconcerting at first, but soon I had no fear of them. Although most spiders possess venom glands, most are too small to break the skin with their fangs and have no desire to do so. All spiders will bite in self-defense if they are handled carelessly. Most bites occur when people roll over in bed on one or when they put on their clothes and a spider inside the clothing bites when it is pressed against the skin. I am not saying all spiders are harmless. Black widows are certainly capable of producing a serious bite, and any such bite by this spider should be considered a major medical emergency. How Brand Marketers Increase Loyalty and Reach

id you know that advertisers spend more than $400 billion in the United States to help influence consumers and businesses to purchase goods and services; promote brands and causes, and take action? Although an advertising jingle may stick in your head, it’s a company’s logo and brand promise imprinted on your favorite pen, USB drive or travel mug that serves as a daily reminder of a company that is often kept and used for years. Decades of data show that promotional products are among the most effective forms of advertising. In a 1992 intercept study of travelers at New York’s La Guardia Airport, travelers pulled out logoed pens and key rings from their pockets and purses, and recalled how they came to own the products. These findings have been confirmed in several similar studies conducted for the promotional product industry’s trade association, Promotional Products Association International (PPAI), most recently with a follow-up intercept airport study in 2012. This year, PPAI studied how marketing decision-makers view and purchase promotional products. Among the key findings: The most important features of promotional products are their ability to promote loyalty (83 percent), reach targets efficiently (80 percent) and appeal to audiences (78 percent). Other notable survey findings:

* At least 4 in 10 companies have a promotional products budget of $50,000 or more. * Seventy-two percent of buyers have a promotional products budget of at least 20 percent of their total budget. * Sixty-five percent consider promotional products effective. * Usefulness (80 percent), ability to relate to industry-specific themes (71 percent) and uniqueness (69 percent) are the most desired features in promotional products. * Buyers cite promotional products as most often used in conjunction with social media (72 percent), email marketing (60 percent), online advertising (58 percent) and sales promotions (54 percent). * More than a third consider promotional products more effective than product samples, social media and sales promotions. * Half of buyers predict their purchase of promotional products will increase substantially in the next 12 months. Several years later, the library was closed for a remodel, and when it Bernalillo County Open Space and the Hubbell House Alliance have re-opened, Schneider thought about what he could do to attract visitors. just the lecture series for you. Synthesis Of 100 School Choice Studies Finds Positive Outcomes

s school choice programs in the states continue to grow, researchers look to empirical evidence to find out whether they are working.

statistically significant effect, and only three studies found that choice had a negative effect. “Our first edition of the Win-Win report included 19 studies; this time around, we were able to look at 100,” said Robert Enlow, president and CEO of the Friedman Foundation. “Every year, we see more and more empirical research that points to the same conclusion: If well designed, school choice programs work.”

The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice published a report last week that analyzes more than 20 years’ worth of rigorous, empirical studies on the effects of school choice programs. The report—“A Win-Win Solution: The Empirical Evidence on School Choice”—found that results from those studies were overwhelmingly in favor of school choice policies in five key areas: • How does school choice affect the academic outcomes of program participants? • How does educational choice affect nearby public schools? • Do school choice programs cost or save taxpayers money? • What is the effect of school choice on racial segregation in public and private schools?

Though the scoreboard is overwhelmingly in favor of educational choice policies, this synthesis is also the first to ever include instances where school choice programs caused declines in student performance. Only two studies (released earlier this year) show this, and they were both studies of the same school choice program: the Louisiana Scholarship Program. The studies find slight declines in student performance in the Louisiana program’s first year but academic improvement in its second year.

• How do private schools affect school choice participants’ civic values?

“Looking at what isn’t working well—and figuring out why—is an important part of our work,” Enlow said. “Educational choice forces us to pursue innovation and opportunity, and we’re committed to improving programs to make sure they’re working well for students.”
