o keep your smile healthy, you should know that your oral health needs evolve with age. Cultivate strong teeth by planting the seeds for good oral health early and knowing what to watch for at different life stages. Babies and Toddlers Baby teeth are susceptible to cavities and need daily upkeep from the beginning. Before the first tooth arrives, wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, clean cloth after each feeding to get rid of unwanted bacteria. Once the first tooth does appear, brush with fluoride toothpaste and toothbrushes designed for babies and younger children. For children under 3 years old, use an amount of toothpaste no more than the size of a grain of rice and no more than a peasized amount for kids between 3 and 6 years old. Babies should also have their first dentist appointment six months after their first tooth or before age 1. Planning ahead for such schedule-disrupting events as vacations and special events can help you stay on track and minimize any health risks that might result from not “taking as directed.”

2. Write it down. If you’ve got several medications to manage, write down the details to keep them straight. Consider using a small one-page calendar, such as the kind found in a checkbook or available through a downloadable tracker, to mark off that you have taken your meds each day.

Doctor’s Advice “It’s really important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you don’t feel different after missing a day or two,” explained Dr. Victoria Losinski, director of pharmacy services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “This is especially true for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, because their risk of ending up in the hospital is 2.5 times greater when not following a doctor’s treatment plan.” The mantra “you have to take the medicine for it to work” goes beyond diabetes control. People who don’t take their prescribed high blood pressure medication on a regular basis have a 42 percent higher chance of developing chronic heart failure. And people on high cholesterol medications are twice as likely to develop heart disease if their cholesterol is not under control. What You Can Do To help, here are five tried-and-true tips for strengthening your everyday prescription medication habits: 1. Talk to a pharmacist. Some drugs have very specific instructions on when to take them, whether to take them on an empty stomach, with certain foods or to avoid in conjunction with certain medications. Your pharmacist can help you understand your medications and map a plan to stay on track. Blue Cross

3. Get organized. Using a pillbox is a simple low-tech way to make sure you take exactly what you need when you need it. There are also pharmacies, including PillPack, that sort your prescriptions, vitamins and other over-the-counter medicines into dated packets to make taking your meds even easier. You can also ask your pharmacy if it offers a similar program. 4. Set an alarm. Use your smartphone to schedule reminders. If you’re looking for an app, try Rxremind, which can be downloaded for iPhone or for Android. 5. Refill on time. Accessing your pharmacy’s auto-refill program, requesting a 90-day supply and using a mail-order prescription service are all good ways to help make sure you don’t run out and miss your medication. What Has Bean on Farmers’ Minds During Planting Season?

or America’s agricultural producers, springtime means planting season and soybeans are on the agenda.

According to the USDA, the U.S. is currently the world’s leading soybean producer. As farmers work to get those soybeans in the ground this year, there are global issues weighing on their minds. The latest results of the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer suggest that America’s food producers are concerned that a prolonged trade war with China could impact U.S. soybean exports. The monthly survey, from Purdue University and CME Group, the world’s leading and most diverse derivatives exchange, measures farmer and rancher sentiment toward the U.S. farm economy. The number of producers expecting soybean prices to decline this year rose to 27 percent in April, compared to just 15 percent at the beginning of the year. Soybean prices are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in trade with China, as China’s share of U.S. soybean exports is approximately 30 percent. Overall, the Ag Economy Barometer experienced two consecutive months

of decline, falling 10 points in April, following a March dip of 5 points. “Producers’ weakening perceptions of the current agricultural climate, along with a decline in their expectations for future economic conditions, were the main drivers of the barometer’s overall decline,” says James Mintert, the barometer’s principal investigator and director of Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture. Since May 2016, Purdue University and CME Group have published the Ag Economy Barometer on a monthly basis to measure food producers’ shifting perceptions about the U.S. agricultural economy over time. The barometer surveys 400 agricultural producers each month to discern their opinions on key economic drivers, and analyze what factors are influencing their outlook for the farm economy. Hints To Help You Have More Comfort At Less Cost

hen the temperature’s rising, your energy costs don’t have to. These tips from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can help:

• Schedule changes to temperature settings based on your needs; • Get feedback on the energy use of the product.

1. Keep the Heat Out and the Cool In—Sealing and insulating your home can save you up to $200 a year in utility bills. Find and seal air leaks with spray foam, caulk and weather stripping. Seal and insulate the cooling system ducts in your attic.

Choose the right size AC. An oversized unit will only remove some of the humidity, leaving the room with a damp, clammy feeling. When installing an AC, follow the instructions and use the insulation materials included.

Considering new windows? ENERGY STAR certified windows have coatings that let in light but keep out heat. Replacing old windows with these lowers household energy bills 12 percent on average. Also, keep shades down and drapes closed.

4. Get Set for Savings—Install a new ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for energy savings with environmental benefits, reliable performance, and convenience, insight and control. A Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat can automatically adjust heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance.

2. Maintain Your Cooling System—Have a contractor check and clean evaporator and condenser air-conditioning coils, check your central air conditioner’s refrigerant level and adjust if necessary, and clean and adjust blower components.

If you have a manual or programmable thermostat, set the temperature up to save energy when you’re asleep or away.

Inspect, clean or change your system’s air filter every three months. 3. Need a Room AC?—If you’re getting a room air conditioner, be aware that models with the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified to deliver energy savings, comfort, and improved sealing and insulation. On average, they cost as little as $70 per year to run. A room air conditioner with connected functionality can: • Turn off the unit remotely using your phone or computer;
