Five Tips For Financial Stability In Retirement Years

ost people have a vision of their golden years that includes a comfortable retirement in which they can spend their time doing the things they enjoy. That dream doesn’t require a substantial amount of wealth, but it is a lot more attainable if you have some financial stability.

Whether you have a small retirement savings or a large investment portfolio, a diversified low-cost investment strategy can deliver additional income for spending and help you stay ahead of inflation. f you’re traveling, expecting an important letter, worried about mail theft or just too curious to wait until the mail arrives, this can be your red-letter day, thanks to a free feature from the United States Postal Service. Informed Delivery lets you know what is coming anytime, anywhere on your computer, smartphone or tablet. Informed Delivery allows you to see digital images of incoming mail. It lets you automatically track packages you are expecting through email and text alerts so you don’t need to enter any tracking numbers. The feature allows you to enter delivery instructions for your mail carrier as well. How It Works The United States Postal Service digitally images the front of letters that run through its automation equipment. Using those images, it can send you digital notification of your mail every morning, before it is delivered to your home or office. That lets you take any necessary action even before important items reach the mailbox—and makes sure you know what is supposed to be in your mailbox after delivery.

What You Get The notifications you receive are of images of the address side of incoming letters. The images are also accessible on the Informed Delivery dashboard at https://informeddelivery.usps.com. For items with USPS Tracking, users will be able to view delivery status of packages, provide USPS delivery instructions, manage their notifications, and schedule redelivery from the dashboard. Most USPS domestic packages tied to the address associated with a USPS account will be automatically available on the Informed Delivery dashboard. You can also get USPS Tracking updates for incoming packages via separate email or text notifications. The dashboard displays mail piece images for seven days, while package information will display for 15 days after each package has been delivered. When Storm Season Approaches, Ready Your Outdoor Power Equipment

t any time of year, storm preparedness is important. Hurricanes, floods and storms can damage property and endanger lives. The preparations you make ahead of bad weather, however, can help you recover faster and stay safer during the storm and the cleanup. To help, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI)—an international trade association representing power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf car and personal transport vehicle manufacturers and suppliers—offers tips for home and business owners. “Right before a storm, people can rush, and it’s easy to skip key steps in getting their outdoor power equipment ready,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI. “At all times of the year, keep your equipment in working order, have the right fuel on hand and know where your safety gear is. This is doubly true during storm season.” Survey your property. Consider the damage a storm might cause and list the equipment you might need to weather the storm or make repairs afterward. Take stock of your equipment. Make sure equipment is in good working order. If needed, take it to an authorized service center for maintenance or repair. Find your safety gear. Avoid the scramble for sturdy shoes, safety goggles, hard hats, reflective clothing, flashlights with working batteries, and work gloves. Round them up now and store them in an accessible area with your equipment. Review the owner’s manuals for your equipment. Know how to operate your equipment safely. Keep the right fuel on hand for your outdoor power equipment. Fuel stations may be closed after a storm, so it’s important to protect your equipment by having the right fuel on hand. It is illegal to use any fuel with

more than 10 percent ethanol in outdoor power equipment, and improper fueling may damage or destroy your equipment. Use safety zones and protect bystanders. Observe a safety zone by keeping power lines at least 50 feet away from your work area. Keep bystanders, children and animals out of your work area. Do not allow other people near outdoor power equipment when starting it up or using it. Follow safe procedures when using chain saws. Always stand with your weight on both feet and adjust your stance so you’re angled away from the blade. Hold the chain saw with both hands. Never overreach or cut anything above your shoulder height. Always have a planned retreat path if something falls. Understand kickback, which may happen when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Use generators safely. Generators should never be used in an enclosed area or placed inside a home or garage, even if the windows or doors are open. Place the generator outside and away from windows, doors and vents. There should be plenty of ventilation. Keep the generator dry and do not use it in rainy or wet conditions. Before refueling, turn the generator off and let it cool down. Make sure all UTV operators know how to drive safely. Keep the UTV stable and drive slowly. Do not turn the vehicle mid-slope or while on a hill. If removing water after a flood, use pumps safely. New Survey Reveals BP Monitoring Habits Need To Improve

A

new survey from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association shows that 40 percent of people with high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, report their numbers were still too high at their most recent doctor’s appointment, and many don’t even know their numbers.

Some people will need medication to keep their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, DePalma said. “But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on lifestyle changes to support your blood pressure− lowering therapy. Making healthier living choices helps your medicine work better.” DePalma added that under a doctor’s care, some people may be able to reduce their medication dose or wean off of it after making consistent progress with lifestyle changes.

The Problem HBP occurs when the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. Ideally, blood pressure should be below 120/80 mmHg. It’s considered elevated if the top number (systolic pressure) is above 120 and high if systolic is 130 or higher, or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is 80 or higher. Uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack and stroke, and most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. What People With HBP Can Do Most people say they know what to do to lower HBP. Yet, according to the new survey, 44 percent of those with HBP didn’t know what a high reading is, and 27 percent didn’t know what their blood pressure was the last time it was checked. In addition, while 80 percent of those diagnosed with HBP say they take medication, 16 percent of those with HBP believe that as long as they take their BP medication, they don’t need to monitor their BP. “The first step to keeping your numbers under control is knowing what they are,” said Sondra DePalma, DHSc, a cardiology PA and certified hypertension specialist. “There are no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you can’t rely on how you feel to gauge your levels. You have to take the time—less than 10 minutes—to check it. That’s 10 minutes well spent, considering controlled blood pressure can add five years to your life.”

Lifestyle changes that help reduce blood pressure include: • Get regular physical activity: Ninety−150 minutes a week of aerobic activity can reduce systolic blood pressure about 5 mmHg. • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, such as the DASH eating plan, can drop your systolic pressure up to 11 mmHg. Reducing your salt intake by about 1,000 mg per day has a similar effect on systolic pressure as increasing aerobic activity—dropping it about 5 mmHg. • Maintain a healthy weight: For about every two pounds lost, your systolic pressure could drop 1 mmHg. • Work together with your doctor to create a treatment plan.
