1) Is LASIK safe? “All surgery comes with risk, but there is a huge amount of clinical research backing LASIK as safe and effective,” assures Dr. Vukich. “That research, and the clinical experience with the procedure, shows it has a 96 percent patient satisfaction rate and the risk of sight-threatening complications is extremely low—less than 1 percent.”

Some have light sensitivity, glare, halos, ghosting or starbursts,” says Dr. Vukich. “These generally go away with time and healing, but sometimes additional medication or other treatment may be needed.” 4) Will I be rid of glasses forever? “LASIK doesn’t stop the aging process, so everyone needs reading glasses

Seeing Is Believing When It Comes To Road Safety

lthough properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council.

• Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it.

“Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

• When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating.

Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned.

• Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade.

• Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. When It Comes To Stroke, It’s OK To Overreact

S

troke affects more than 795,000 people in the United States every year.1 Also known as a “brain attack,” a stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain is blocked by plaque (acute ischemic stroke) or ruptures and bleeds (hemorrhagic stroke).2 If you suspect stroke, call 911 immediately. The saying “time is brain” references the importance of receiving immediate medical attention for a stroke before it starts affecting brain function. Stroke is serious; quick treatment can be the deciding factor between recovery and disability.2 How To Recognize Stroke Would you or your loved ones know what to do in the event of a stroke? It’s important to recognize all the ways in which stroke can present itself to be best prepared in the case of a medical emergency as the symptoms don’t always appear the same in every person. Many people may be familiar with the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke, but could you recognize all 10 signs? 1. Confusion 2. Difficulty Understanding 3. Dizziness 4. Loss of Balance 5.Numbness 6. Severe Headache 7. Trouble Speaking 8. Trouble Walking 9. Vision Changes 10. Weakness3

As with most symptoms, these are not unique to stroke but if they appear quickly and are out of the ordinary, they may indicate a serious condition that requires immediate attention. If you recognize any combination of these signs, it’s okay to “overreact.” Suspicion is enough reason to take action and call 911. Do not wait for symptoms to subside. The right care—right away—has the potential to save both lives and quality of life.4 Who Is At Risk? While a stroke can happen to anyone at any time, certain factors can place your loved ones at an increased risk of having a stroke.5 One of the best ways to protect them from stroke is to know their risks and do what you can do to help reduce them. While you can’t control age or family history, there are many manageable risk factors that can lower your loved one’s chances of stroke. Survivors are speaking out to show the real impact of high blood pressure, and a new campaign from the Ad Council, American Heart Association and American Medical Association provides resources to help you and your doctor create a treatment plan that works for you. Survivors William, Jill, Francisco, Allyson and others show you what high blood pressure looks like while telling their stories at LowerYourHBP.org to encourage you to get your blood pressure under control before it’s too late. Understanding High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is any level of blood pressure above 130/80. Its consequences include heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision loss, sexual dysfunction and peripheral artery disease. According to the American Heart Association, 46 percent of Americans have high blood pressure, but only about half of them have it under control. Committing To A Plan Once you know you have high blood pressure, you can manage it very effectively through changes in eating habits, physical activity, and, when needed, medication.
