So tax season is a good time to review your personal financial records and ensure they are accurate and there are no unknown or erroneous data in them.

Monitor your financial relationships. The credit report is one of the easiest and best ways to do that,” notes Pratt.
In a number of situations, information you provide the credit bureau will be sent to the lender. The lender will verify whether the information is correct or not and then the credit bureau will notify you of the results. If there’s information that needs to be updated, the credit bureau will do so. If it’s a case of identity theft, the credit bureau will work with you to remove the fraudulent information from your file and to place appropriate alerts that can help prevent fraudulent transactions from appearing on your file in the future.
After you get your credit report, make sure all the accounts are yours. If you see one that you don’t recognize or an account that has an error, contact the credit bureau. You can also contact the creditor or lender that

The Danger According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, senior citizens account for only 9 percent of the population but almost 14 percent of fatal traffic accidents. As people age, their driving patterns change. Retirement, different schedules and new activities affect when and where they drive. Although most older adults drive safely because they have a lot of experience behind the wheel, when they are involved in crashes, they may be hurt more seriously than younger drivers. Many see driving as an important part of staying independent, and people 70 and older tend to keep their licenses longer and drive more miles than in the past. What To Do
Elderly drivers and the people who care for them should have a trusted doctor check their eyes and reflexes to determine whether they should be driving anymore. If it seems a driver you care about should be off the road, listen to his or her concerns and feelings on the subject. Explore the possibilities. Are there solutions that could keep him or her driving safely longer, such as getting new glasses or only driving during the day? Try to arrange for alternative transportation so he doesn’t feel trapped at home. If she sells her car, remind her of the money she’ll save on insurance and maintenance— which can be used for buses and taxis. Having this talk may not be easy but you could save a life. Welcome Winter’s Chill With the Taste of Fresh Pears

inter is here. While thoughts of orchards hanging heavy with fruit may feel like a distant memory, fresh, U.S.-grown pears are at their prime. This year’s pear crop -- as many as 10 varieties -- are in stores now, and abundant throughout the winter months. Eating nutrient-packed pears as a snack or as part of a meal is a great way to meet the daily recommendation of fruit this season. Sweet and juicy with no fat, no sodium and no cholesterol, pears are an excellent source of fiber (24 percent Daily Value) and a good source of vitamin C (10 percent DV) for only 100 calories per mediumsized pear. In addition, a recent study revealed new information regarding the health benefits of pear consumption. The study found that adult pear consumers had a lower body weight than non-pear consumers, and they were 35 percent less likely to be obese. Fresh, earthy pears are a portable, wholesome treat and a perfect addition to sweet and savory dishes. These chicken and crunchy pear lettuce wraps combine crisp Anjou pears with lean, protein-rich ground chicken for a budget- and family-friendly winter meal. Ingredients: * 1 tablespoon cornstarch * 2 tablespoons peanut oil * 1 tablespoon minced garlic * 1-1/2 tablespoons grated ginger root * 6 scallions, thinly sliced, green and white parts separated * 1 pound ground chicken, dark meat * 1 tablespoon chili sauce * 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
* 2 tablespoons soy sauce * 1 USA Pear, such as Red Anjou or Bosc, peeled, cored and cut in matchsticks * Toasted sesame oil to taste * 12 large tender lettuce leaves, such as bib, butter or red leaf * Cilantro sprigs Directions: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of water to form a smooth paste and set aside. Warm the peanut oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, ginger, and white parts of the scallion and stir-fry until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the chicken and cook, stirring frequently until it breaks into small pieces and is no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Add the chili sauce, hoisin sauce and soy sauce, stirring to combine and evenly distribute the ingredients. Add the reserved cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce is clear. Finish with the reserved scallion greens, pear matchsticks and a splash of sesame oil. To serve: Place a heaping tablespoon of filling in the middle of a lettuce leaf with a few cilantro leaves, if desired. Wrap the lettuce around the contents and eat. If not, how much can I expect to be billed for my visit? 2. Will my insurance plan’s payment cover the full cost of this out-of-network visit? If not, will you expect me to pay the difference between your bill and what you are paid by the insurance company? If you participate in another network, are you willing to accept their payment amount as full payment for this visit/service? 3. Will you file claim forms for out-of-network services on my behalf? 4. What tests/lab work will be ordered for my visit? Will they be covered by my health plan? If performed elsewhere, are the facilities performing the tests/lab work considered “in-network” under my plan?

ome eye diseases have no warning signs until damage has been done, but vision loss may be minimized if diseases are detected and treated early. That’s why comprehensive eye exams are essential to maintaining eye health and catching problems before symptoms occur. Approximately 11 million Americans live with macular degeneration, which damages central vision and is a leading cause of legal blindness. Yet many people have never heard of the condition until they are diagnosed. About 3 million Americans have some form of glaucoma, which affects side vision and can lead to blindness if not treated. An estimated half of these individuals aren’t aware they have the disease. “These statistics are one reason BrightFocus Foundation is offering free resources to help protect sight,” says Stacy Pagos Haller, BrightFocus President. How One Veteran And His Family Found Support After An Injury

ervice-related injuries have an effect that is felt by the entire family. Here’s a look at one couple and how they coped.
One Family’s Story When Melissa Johnson and her husband, Sean, got married in 1995, Sean had already served in Operation Desert Storm and had been trained as a paramedic. He first enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 and later would go on to do two more tours of duty. It was during his third tour, Operation Iraqi Freedom, when he was hit by mortar fire. It left him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. “The combination of ever-changing symptoms really made Sean’s situation difficult,” Melissa said. “We weren’t getting answers from the doctors. Army medics weren’t looking for the signs of traumatic brain injury back then and his condition went undiagnosed for two years. We were having a tough time getting benefits. It was an uphill battle-a continuing series of uphill battles.” It was also hard for friends and family to understand what was going on or how to help. After experiencing increasing problems with his vision, Sean was declared legally blind in 2008. While he has a bit of usable remaining vision—enough to read text up close for a short time—he has lost the peripheral vision needed to travel safely. The damage to his brain hampers interpretation of information coming through his eyes. Answers At Last When Sean finally got connected with the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) Field Service Officers at Hines Blind Rehabilitation Center, things began to turn around. “All of a sudden, people were providing us with in-
formation—we didn’t have to go searching for it. We got connected with people and programs we’d never have been aware of at home in rural South Dakota,” Melissa said. “It was really that first BVA convention— meeting people, hearing success stories—it was so empowering. That was where Sean found out about tandem cycling; it gave him so much hope. It started us in a new direction.” For Melissa, meeting other families that were dealing with similar issues was most rewarding. Spouses and family members are the support teams for recovering veterans. “Caregiver burnout is a serious problem,” Melissa said. “Young spouses may also be juggling with caring for young children and jobs. There’s a lot we can learn from each other, and from older veterans and their families that have already successfully navigated the changes.” Melissa now serves as Secretary for the National BVA Auxiliary Board. “The BVA Auxiliary offers a lot of support to veterans and their families,” Melissa said. “It is there to make sure the spouses, partners and children of blinded veterans have a place they can turn to with their questions and concerns. “I believe BVA programs and outreach are absolutely critical to the recovery and healing of our blind veterans,” she said. “It is essential for a veteran who is adjusting to blindness to connect with peers who understand what they’re going through. Understanding Science News About Exposure To Toxic Substances
f you’re like many Americans, you’re concerned about the health effects—to yourself and the environment—of exposure to toxic substances.
by eating or drinking, breathing, or placing the substance on the skin—or were invasive approaches, such as intravenous injection, used? The effects of toxic substances can depend strongly on the route of exposure, an important factor that must be considered in evaluating the likelihood of harm.
Fortunately, when you see news reports on scientific research, there are some simple ways to figure out what the new research means for you. When evaluating scientific studies regarding chemicals and toxic substances, you should ask the following questions: • Has the study been reproduced or is this a one-time reporting event? If it hasn’t been reproduced, the results may not be predictive of the response in most people. • Was the study conducted on experimental animals, cell cultures, or based on human evidence? If it’s one of the first two, the results might be informative, but don’t always directly translate to responses in people. • How do the dose levels in the study compare to actual or predicted human use levels? Frequently, because toxicologists are interested in determining the ability of a substance to cause harm (e.g. the worst-case scenario), they use experimental doses that are much higher than the amounts humans or the environment will experience. • What was the route of exposure used in the study; that is, did the study employ one of the three basic ways by which humans are often exposed— 63¢ / line for first week
