Deep Convictions: A Look At Religious Liberty

hat would you do if your most strongly held beliefs were challenged by the government, placing your livelihood, your way of life and even your freedom at risk?

• In 1989, a Klamath Indian man walked into the highest court of the nation to fight for the right to practice the central sacrament of the Native American Church after the state of Oregon had declared it illegal.

The Book “Deep Conviction: True Stories of Ordinary Americans Fighting for the Freedom to Live Their Beliefs” (Shadow Mountain) is by professor and lawyer Steven T. Collis. An advocate and a scholar, he believes religious freedom is “a fundamental liberty protecting all individuals living in this country, allowing us to exist in relative peace with one another.” This peace, he adds, is unique in history and exceptional even in the world today. Collis notes, “Religion is not what leads us to battle, it’s the lack of religious liberty.”

• And, finally, in 2017, a Christian baker and a gay couple took their cases to the United States Supreme Court after the baker declined to create a custom wedding cake to celebrate the couple’s same-sex marriage, fearing it would violate his duty to God.

Spiders In The House Is A Good Thing By Bugman

D

o you realize that you may be renting out space in your home even as you read this? Most homes have a dozen or more spiders living in it that you, the landlord, aren’t aware of. The good news is, these spiders pay rent of sorts by eating and, therefore reducing, the number of unwanted bugs in your home. They are also much more efficient and safer than an exterminator who prays toxic pesticides. These little tenants will live under furniture, in closets, corners, basements, attics, garages, storage sheds or other buildings. Many of them will live their entire lives without meeting their landlords. So, if you have spiders, there is no reason to evict them. Spiders are our friends. Of course, if you are afraid of spiders, you may want to get rid of them so you can relax. A lot of people have this fear, but you can overcome it. When I first started in the bug business more than 40 years ago, I had a morbid fear of spiders but now don’t even mind when they crawl on me. The technical term for the condition is arachnophobia, derived from the Greek words “arachne,” meaning “spider,” and “phobos,” meaning “a fear.” The fear of spiders may have had its roots in Europe during the Middle Ages. Spiders were considered a source of contamination, and any food that came into contact with them was considered poisoned. If they fell into the water it was thought to be undrinkable. Spiders were originally thought to spread the plague (Black Death) by biting people. Fear of the plague clouded people’s perceptions of the spiders, and they were blamed for all sorts of illnesses and epidemics simply because they were present. The fear of spiders has persisted in our society, and it is actually encouraged by the pesticide industry. Many companies want to “control” spiders by spraying your home with pesticides. They are actually preying

on your fear. While I’m no psychologist, I can tell you the way I overcame my fear was to face it and educate myself about spiders. I started by reading all the literature I could about them. I watched them spin their webs and stalk their prey. Finally, after several weeks I let one crawl on me. It didn’t bite me and I didn’t have a heart attack. I went under houses and crawled through their webs. It was a bit disconcerting at first, but soon I had no fear. Now I have no problem crawling through hundreds of spider webs under a house. I’ll even pick up black widows. None have ever bitten. Although most spiders possess venom glands, most are too small to break the skin with their fangs and have no desire to do so. All spiders will bite in self-defense if they are handled carelessly, such as being squeezed. Most bites occur when people roll over on one in bed and get bitten, or when dressing and a spider inside the clothing bites because it gets pressed against the skin. I am not saying all spiders are harmless. Black widows are certainly capable of producing a serious bite and any such bite by this spider should be considered a major medical emergency. The brown recluse is also dangerously venomous but rarely bites. You can spray spiders with EPA Exempt pesticides, which are safe. Greenbug is a good example.
