Making E-mail Secure Is Just Not That Difficult

E

-mail security is not the problem—it’s how we use e-mail that is the problem. There has been no lack of press and attention regarding the insecurity of e-mail and the consequences of account hacking. Look no further than the latest elections, the Sony Pictures hack, the latest Yahoo compromise, etc. We hear about the problem all the time. What is missing from all the discussion is how to solve the problem. E-mail in its stock form is inherently insecure but that does not mean that it must stay that way. With a little bit of effort, one can confidently send secure e-mail with virtually no risk of the contents being compromised. An analogy is that of a car and a seat belt. Cars are useful and largely safe. But we can make them safer by buckling up. While seat belts were not used regularly for many years, today, we understand their benefit and they are widely used. We need to make e-mail safe and secure and we can do this when e-mail encryption becomes as widely used. So get ready to buckle up before sending. E-mail Suffers From Two Problems: The first problem is that the content of your e-mails is readable when the e-mail is “at rest” (stored on either your system or on the corporate or cloud-based server such as Gmail). E-mails that are at rest can be easily read by any administrator with rights to administer the system or by anyone with your e-mail address and password. The second problem is guaranteeing your identity or the identity of someone sending you an e-mail. Your identity or that of any sender can easily be spoofed. You have no way to be confident that the e-mail you received was from who it claims to be, nor can anyone be confident that e-mail from you came from you. All one needs is a friendly e-mail server (i.e., one where you have administrator rights) to spoof e-mail “To:” and “From:” addresses. While these problems are significant, there is a great and relatively easy way to buckle up when using e-mail that solves both problems.

Encrypting your e-mails end to end (E2E) from within the e-mail client solves the problem by ensuring that they are safe and secure at rest (and in flight). Your content might get hacked but the hackers wouldn’t be able to read the content because it is encrypted. If your account has been compromised such that a third party has access, they wouldn’t have access to your encryption keys and thus couldn’t decrypt your content. The second problem is solved with a technology that is closely related to encryption called Signing. When an e-mail is signed electronically, it guarantees that the sender is as advertised. How does one get these protections? First, both sides of the communication need to agree to participate. It also takes an extra step, like buckling up your seat belt—you need to press a button (within your e-mail client) to secure your e-mail. The purpose of the hearing is to consider a proposed class action settlement of the claims in the above captioned lawsuit asserted against El Paso Natural Gas Company and Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company, LP, a wholly owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips Company, and as successor in interest to Burlington Resources Oil and Gas Company (collectively referred to herein as “Defendants”). A detailed settlement notice has been mailed to all known potential Class Members describing the settlement and the rights of the Class Members. This subclass further includes owners who received a share of their royalty and/or overriding royalty revenue

from BROG and/or EPNG, even though they were not directly leased to BROG and/or El Paso, vis-à-vis Oklahoma Senate Bill 168, codified as 52 Okla. St. § 570.4. This subclass excludes overriding royalty owners with the right to take in kind. Subclass 2: The persons or entities who own or have owned non-cost bearing interests, which are subject to oil and gas leases owned prior to August 7, 2009 in whole or in part by BROG and/or El Paso, which leases are or were productive of oil, gas and other hydrocarbons during the period March 1, 1984 through May 31, 2015 and located in the State of Texas a) For each of the above two subclasses, “natural gas or other hydrocarbons” shall include natural gas, casinghead gas, natural gas liquids, condensate from natural gas, and all hydrocarbons entrained in natural gas and all other hydrocarbons not produced and separated at the well in liquid form by ordinary production methods. b) For each of the above two subclasses, “non-cost bearing interests” shall include owners of royalty, overriding royalty and other forms of nonparticipating mineral rights. c) For each of the above two subclasses, the Class includes persons who owned non-cost bearing interests in the above described wells from March 1, 1984 to May 31, 2015. d) For each of the above two subclasses, the claim period encompasses claims accruing from January 1, 1980 through the Final Approval. EXCLUSIONS: The following persons or entities are excluded from the subclasses: (i) D e f e n d a n t s and any of their wholly owned affiliates, parents or commonly owned subsidiaries through a common parent; (ii) All state or federal owned interests; (iii) Indian Tribe interests, whether or not allotted; (iv) All publicly traded companies who receive over seventy-five (75) percent of their oil and gas revenue from working interest sources; (v) All claims under wells qualified under Sec. 107 of the NGPA, inclusive of those claims settled by persons or entities in the case of Bank of America, et al. v. El Paso Natural Gas Company, et al., consolidated Case No. CJ97-68, District Court for Washita County, State of Oklahoma; and (vi) The wells and claims covered by the allegations pled in Dodson v. El Paso Natural Gas Company, et al., Case No. CJ-2004-119, Beckham County, Oklahoma. On February 13, 2014, the District Court of Washita County, Oklahoma entered a subsequent Order certifying the New Mexico Subclass. That Order was affirmed by the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals by Order dated January 30, 2015 in Appeal No. 112,648. Thereafter, the Oklahoma Supreme Court by Order dated November 9, 2015, denied Certiorari and the Mandate issued on January 27, 2016. The 3rd subclass is defined as follows: Subclass 3: The persons or entities who own or have owned non-cost bearing interests, which are subject to oil and gas leases, owned prior to February 13, 2014 in whole or in part by BROG and/

or EPNG, which leases are or were productive of oil, gas and other hydrocarbons during the period March 1, 1984 through December 31, 2015 and located in the State of New Mexico. For further definition, and as is consistent with the Oklahoma and Texas subclasses previously certified: a) “oil, gas and other hydrocarbons” shall include, but not be limited to natural gas, oil, condensate, casinghead gas, natural gas liquids, all hydrocarbons entrained with natural gas, or casinghead gas regardless of where such hydrocarbons are captured or obtained, inclusive of coal bed methane, shale gas, shale oil or any other substance or material which consists of or is commonly accepted as a hydrocarbon; b) “non-cost bearing interests” shall include owners of royalty, overriding royalty and other forms of non-participating mineral rights; c) for this subclass 3, the Class includes persons who owned non-cost bearing interests in the above described wells during the period March 1, 1984 through May 31, 2015; and d) the claim period encompasses claims accruing from January 1, 1980 through the Final Approval. hy is “Dot.,” a new original animated series on Sprout from Industrial Brothers in association with The Jim Henson Company and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, so timely and important? In 2017, 10 years after the iPhone was introduced, mobile technology has rapidly changed the way we interact with media. Children as young as 2 use tablets and phones—swiping, tapping and viewing to gain access to content. For today’s youngest digital natives, digital tools are an integral part of their lives, used in fluid ways to explore their worlds. Technology is not SEPARATE but instead a PART of their lives, an important tool that helps them play, learn, socialize and engage. Mobile interactive apps and games provide ample opportunities for children to move their bodies, learn, create digital masterpieces and explore everything and anything that captures their imagination. At the same time, in today’s 24/7 digital environment, children can use media to make impulsive choices, view material that is not age appropriate or communicate inappropriately. The benefits are great but the risks must be mitigated. When The Jim Henson Company asked me to be an advisor on preschool TV show “Dot.,” I enthusiastically agreed. The show’s creators wanted to embed digital citizenship lessons into each episode to help guide both children and parents to responsibly navigate technology. The hope is that through Dot’s experiences, children learn to harness the power of this interactive and informational medium in the most productive and pro-social manner. By starting to teach these digital citizenship skills early, parents can ensure that their children learn best practices and develop the skills they need to take advantage of the many opportunities that technology and media offer us. ere’s news many may find educational: According to a recent University of Phoenix College of Education survey,* one in three (34 percent) K−12 teachers nationwide say they changed careers to join the teaching profession, with 36 percent of career changers coming from a business and management background. n yoga, we spend the bulk of our time focused on the body and spirit. As teachers, we offer alignment cues and help class participants to keep the focus on the breath. However, quite often the muscles in our faces contract without awareness, especially when entering a challenging posture. Even in our daily life, we might be concerned to a degree about the way our face looks or how an expression might be received. Any of this can lead to tension in the face. Yet, we don’t often spend time stretching the facial muscles. Let’s spend some time today waking up these forgotten muscles with a few easily repeatable movements. Once you have these memorized, you can do them anywhere. These will boost blood flow to the small muscles in the face and increase elasticity. To begin, sit up tall; you can sit on a block if you like. Just be sure you are in a position where you can relax and keep the spine tall. mouth, and close the teeth. Close your eyes and sit for five breaths. Notice how your jaw begins to relax and the muscles of the face release as you breathe. Continue breathing, and relax the cheeks, the forehead, the nose and the eyes. Temple Dancer: Shift the gaze off to the right for a full breath, and on the exhale, bring the gaze back to the nose, then shift the gaze to the left. Repeat for eight rounds. This will help to expand the periphery of the gaze and stretch the skin around the eyes. Cheek Puff: For 10 rounds, holding breath in the mouth like you are swishing liquid from one side of the mouth to the other, puff the cheeks. Fish Face: Much like it sounds, suck the cheeks in to the middle of your mouth, and then attempt to smile simultaneously. Hold the face like this for 10 full breaths. Baby Bird: Tilt the head back with the chin headed toward the sky, like a baby bird waiting for a meal. Hold for five breaths and repeat.

Signs Of Unsafe Driving In Older Adults The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that there are more than 38 million drivers age 65 and older. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving often represents freedom, independence and control.

So how do you know whether you or an older adult you know is developing difficulties as a driver? These issues can be warning signs that suggest that an older driver may need to be tested or evaluated: • Getting lost in familiar areas • Ignoring traffic signs and signals • Becoming easily agitated or angered • Falling asleep or being unable to concentrate when driving

But transitioning from driving doesn’t mean you have to lose these things. Your health care providers or Area Agency on Aging (www. eldercare.gov) can point you toward a range of transportation alternatives in the community.
