f you’ve ever served in the military, worked for the federal government, signed a visitors log in a federal building, or addressed a letter at a post office, chances are you’ve had your hands on an American classic. Today, people who are blind working at NIB associated agencies produce more than 7,000 different products for the federal government, including office supplies, cleaning supplies, hardware and paints, and a wide range of products to equip the U.S. military, such as uniforms, bedding and protective equipment. Nurses Now Do More Than Ever
he next time you visit someone in a hospital or other health care setting, you may be surprised at just how much of what happens there is done by nurses.
• Increasingly greater role in the management of overall patient care planning (40 percent) • Increasingly greater leadership role (36 percent).
Study Shows Recently released results from a University of Phoenix College of Health Professions survey found that the role of nurses has grown dramatically in recent years. More than eight in 10 registered nurses (RNs) say health care professionals besides physicians (nurse practitioners, registered nurses and so on) are playing or will play a larger role in the overall management of patient care. University of Phoenix, which offers leading-edge graduate, undergraduate, certificate and nondegree programs aimed at preparing students to improve the quality of health care in their communities and the industry, sought to understand the evolving role of nurses and what this changing environment means for the future of health care. In addition to playing a larger role in managing patient care, it found, about a third of RNs say they’ve seen an increased role in doing tasks traditionally done by a physician. This may be due in part to specialty tracks available to nurses, including nurse practitioner programs. “Our nurses play a pivotal role in getting patients back to health in an increasingly demanding environment,” explained Dr. Lisa Radesi, academic dean for the School of Nursing at University of Phoenix. “As the health care industry continues to evolve to support an aging population, advanced technologies and a multifaceted insurance system, we must recognize the demanding work our nurses do and prepare them to be successful in this complex environment.”
About a third of RNs say they’ll be focusing more on the emotional well-being of patients, while nearly three in five strongly agree that good people skills are just as important as technical skills when giving quality care. “The ability to balance bedside care with technical and leadership skills is crucial for today’s nurses,” added Dr. Radesi. “The job expectations for nurses continue to grow, but the heart of the profession will always be in providing the best possible care for patients. This should be encouraging, as nurses can use these new skills to continue to learn and grow within their roles while healing and helping their patients.” A Promising Career As opportunities continue to increase in the profession—the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15 percent by 2026—RNs say their facilities should focus on preparing health care professionals with greater leadership skills. “The field continues to evolve, requiring facilities and educational institutions to innovate to provide nurses with the information they need to help them succeed in the profession,” said Dr. Radesi. “University of Phoenix, for example, aligns its programs to leading industry organization standards, and offers concentrations in nurse administration, nurse education, informatics and more to help nurses specialize in what’s most important to them.”

ccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are 5.25 million driving accidents a year in the U.S.—but they needn’t happen to you.
Many of the professionals who drive trucks, taxis, limousines and buses are recognized for their attention to safety. For example, the 127,000 small-package drivers at UPS are among the safest on the roads, logging more than 3 billion miles per year and delivering nearly 5 billion packages annually.
What You Can Do • Don’t use your smartphone while driving. Drivers talking on phones, hand-held or hands-free, can miss seeing up to half of their surroundings, such as pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists or other drivers.
In fact, the company recently inducted 1,582 drivers into its elite “Circle of Honor,” raising to 10,503 the number of drivers who haven’t had a preventable accident for 25 years or more.
• Drive “defensively.” Be aware of what drivers around you are doing. • Keep your eyes moving while you drive. Check all mirrors. • Leave at least two to four car lengths between your car and the one ahead, six or eight at night or in bad weather. • Obey all speed limits and signs. • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are fatigued. • Always wear your seat belt. • Adjust all mirrors and seats properly before starting the car. • Use turn signals, and ensure your lights are on at night and in bad weather. Make yourself visible with horn, lights and signals. • Look out for the truck and bus “No-Zone.” Those drivers have big blind spots. If you can’t see the drivers in their rearview mirrors, they can’t see you.
Collectively, these drivers logged 14 billion miles and achieved more than 257,195 years of safe driving throughout their careers. That’s enough to circle the equator 547,000 times, or make 206 round-trips to Mars. Before ever making a delivery, all UPS drivers are taught safe driving methods through the company’s defensive driving platform. The training continues throughout their careers. The company’s UPS Integrad training school for delivery drivers, and Driver Trainer School (DTS) for tractor-trailer instructors, boast some of the industry’s most rigorous safety training, with the most up-to-date technology, including virtual reality devices. Everyone With ALS Counts
A
myotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells. It first gained national attention as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in 1939. To date, the cause of ALS is unknown, and there is still no known cure. The disease strikes quickly, usually leading to death within two to five years of diagnosis. But every person with ALS has an individual story, and understanding these stories will help researchers ultimately piece together clues about this disease. Ed Tessaro was diagnosed with ALS in 2009. As he learned to cope with this diagnosis, he reflects, “I’ve never considered myself a victim of the disease because I believe in my heart all of us have a wheelchair. In my case, it’s quite literal, but with everything that goes on in my life, I realize that every family has had a crisis.” One of the things that helps him and others with ALS is reaching out for community support and resources. “The ongoing struggle is to encourage newly diagnosed people to come in and talk about their condition. I want to help people learn about the National ALS Registry, clinical trials, and other resources that can provide support and hope.”
The National ALS Registry helps gather information from those who are living with this disease. Researchers from all around the world can access the Registry data to help scientists learn more about what causes this disease. Everyone’s story is different, and everyone’s piece of the puzzle is essential. The Registry has found that almost 16,000 persons with ALS live in the United States, as of 2014. It is important to include as many people as possible living with the disease to get the most accurate information. When patients join, it helps give researchers more information. This could lead to a better understanding of the causes of ALS, because learning more about the disease is one step further in the battle to defeat it. Concludes Ed, “It’s tough, but maybe we can fling open a door or two in the next couple of years of research.
