Tips from a Scammer on How to Avoid Scams by Beverly Custer

rank Abagnale, Jr., gained notoriety as one of the greatest imposters of the 20th century, posing as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. He got away with it for five years until his arrest at age 21. The 2002 movie “Catch Me if You Can,” in which Abagnale was portrayed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, depicted his almost unbelievable crime spree. As a condition of his early release from prison, Abagnale worked with the FBI to uncover check forgery scams, and he has since become a top consumer fraud expert. Abagnale, now 60, spoke with AARP recently, sharing his expertise on the subject of scams and fraud and how they can affect seniors. All information from him that follows was taken from that interview. “Scams cost Americans $900 billion a year. Compare that number to our country’s $700 billion budget,” Abagnale said. “There are 37 billion dollars stolen from seniors annually. It can cost them their homes, their pensions, their savings. “Anyone can be scammed,” he said, “including myself and highly intelligent people.” In one prevalent scam, the thief calls grandparents to tell them that their grandchild is in trouble and asks for them to post bail money. The caller ID comes up as the police department. “The caller will try and convince you that action is required immediately,” Abagnale said. But he warns not to act on panic, advising there are things you can do to determine the authenticity of the caller. “First of all, be a little suspicious; it’s an asset to be so. Innocent folks don’t think like a scammer.” If you receive a phone call from a scam artist, Abagnale says to hang up and call police. “Do not call the number back from which they called you.” In fraudulent situations, he says, requests or demands for either money or personal information should arouse suspicion. Always verify who you’re talking to. Never give out your personal information over the phone. And don’t ever give or loan money to someone you don’t know. Another scam that has affected older Americans is called the “romance

scam.” In this case, lonely singles become the victims of perpetrators attempting to con them out of often large sums of money. Other fraudulent ploys include “phishing,” which are convincing due to their personal nature and which seek personal details. “Let’s say you’ve posted information on Facebook about going to lunch with your girlfriend. A con artist can use that information, especially if your social media accounts aren’t set to “private,” to follow up (with you). They are very sophisticated scams and believable enough to trick you into inadvertently giving out private information when you ‘bite.’” These scams are in 115 countries, with $12 billion in losses, he said, adding that banks have begun calling people to verify large sums of wire transfers as a result of this. Abagnale also discussed spoofing. This scam involves robocalls, the majority of which come from overseas using a manipulated caller ID. The recipient may even recognize it as being from a familiar source – the IRS, for example. “These are orchestrated by large organizations, like a Russian gang that brings in millions of dollars a year. They look and sound legitimate,” Abagnale said. Sometimes a scammer will lead you to say the word “yes” during a recorded phone conversation, only to later use that as evidence of your verbal agreement to certain charges or purchases. Then they’ll threaten to sue if you don’t pay. ALS Must Not Defeat Us: A Message of Hope

n 2001, Alan Alderman was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Many people know ALS as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who got the illness.

the Registry data. During the seven years of the National ALS Registry’s existence, researchers have learned a lot about ALS. But there is still a long way to go to understanding this disease. The Registry relies upon the participation of the people around the U.S. living with ALS.

ALS is a disease that makes the nerve cells stop working and die. The nerves lose the ability to trigger specific muscles, which causes the muscles to become weak and leads to paralysis. Unfortunately, about 80 percent of people who get ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis.

The Registry has found that over 16,000 persons with ALS live in the United States. In addition, the Registry is funding research to find out what may cause ALS, such as exposures to environmental toxins and pollution, genetic links, and certain medical conditions or medications.

After Mr. Alderman’s diagnosis, he became determined that ALS might eventually take his life, but it would not destroy it. For the past 18 years, Alan has been fighting against ALS. He has been active in fundraising, advocacy, and raising awareness for ALS. This winter, he rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat to help raise funds and awareness for the organization Row4ALS. While most of us don’t want to face the ocean in a rowboat, what can we do to help fight ALS? The National ALS Registry helps gather information from people like Mr. Alderman who are living with this terrible disease. The National ALS Registry is the only population-based registry in the U.S. that collects information to help scientists learn more about who gets ALS and its causes. Researchers and scientists from all around the world can access

While we don’t know the causes of this disease, we do know that to get a full picture of this disease - and to understand its possible causes, and potential treatments - the Registry needs as many patients as possible to register. All of the data are confidential; researchers do not get patients’ personal information. Every year, nearly 5,000 more people are diagnosed with this terrible disease. Everyone’s story is different, and everyone’s piece of the puzzle is essential. When patients join the Registry, it helps give researchers more information. Pickleball - One Of The Fastest Growing Sports In America. by Beverly Custer

ickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. If you’ve ever wondered about the craze, or what, if anything, it has to do with pickles, stay tuned.

from June 14-25, and pickleball is among the competitive sports planned. Tournaments, which are free to the public, are expected to be held at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center.

The game that is sweeping the country is a combination of tennis, PingPong and badminton. Pickleball courts are half the size of a tennis court, with a shorter net, and to score points, players must move constantly. Games are played using a Wiffle ball and a paddle slightly larger than those used in Ping-Pong. It requires quick reflexes and is faster paced than tennis.

“Pickleball is easy to learn. You can play doubles so that you complement each other and help each other out during the game,” said Joyce Paulsen, Albuquerque Pickleball Club president. She has played the sport for eight years, and this will be her fourth time competing in the NSG.

Pickleball is growing in popularity in part because it’s a social sport. Like tennis, it can be played in singles or doubles, and due to the smaller court, players are able to interact with each other during the game. According to the USA Pickleball Association’s 2019 pickleball fact sheet, more than three million Americans play pickleball, and it doesn’t seem to be a passing fad, especially among older Americans. SeniorHousingNews.com published an article in April touting the pros of having pickleball courts as an amenity among senior living facilities due to its popularity among the demographic. It claims a rising demand for pickleball over tennis. The article said seniors are attracted to the sport because it is low impact, creating less stress on the knees and joints than other activities. Also, playing the game regularly can improve fitness levels. This summer, the National Senior Games will be hosted in Albuquerque

“It doesn’t overtax you,” she said. “Beginners can play, including kids, and you can play seven days a week here in Albuquerque.” Paulsen and her husband, Bob, play together often. “I’ve played tennis for 45 years,” he said. “You have to set up a game and court. Playing takes about an hour and a half, and then you’re done. With pickleball, you can come out to the court any time. There are 50 people already there playing. The games are about 15 minutes long, then you rotate. It’s such a fun, social sport.” There are a couple of theories as to the origin of the sport’s name, but the most popular one is that it started with a dog. It is said that Joel Pritchard developed the game in 1965 near Seattle and that the family dog, named Pickles, chased errant balls when it was played. Five Ways To Help Prevent Veteran Suicide

t’s a tragedy: Every day, 22 U.S. veterans take their own lives—a needless loss of 8,000 service members a year.

One outstanding option that’s transformed the lives of more than 550 veterans and their families is the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga. This innovative program provides up to 12 weeks of intensive rehabilitation, at no cost to the veteran, to treat mild to moderate brain injury and psychological concerns of those who served in the U.S. military since September 11, 2001. Treatment plans are personalized to each veteran’s needs. The program is open to all post-9/11 veterans, including those with other than honorable discharges.

The Problem Returning veterans may experience divorce, joblessness, homelessness and hopelessness. The often-devastating effects of mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS), plus the loss of their military community support, can cause a downward spiral. Symptoms of mTBI include headaches and problems with balance, sleep, vision and memory. Emotional signs include depression and anxiety. But today’s treatment approaches and therapeutic technologies offer hope for veterans feeling overwhelming physical and emotional pain from these invisible wounds of war. What You Can Do 1. Be observant about behavior changes. For many veterans, the physical symptoms of mTBI are not obvious. Be on the lookout for loss of interest in meaningful activities, personality changes, social isolation and substance abuse. 2. Reach out and spend time together. Let a veteran know he or she is not alone. Meet for coffee or go for a walk. Listen and encourage them to seek help. 3. Tell veterans and their families about helpful programs. Encourage caregivers, spouses and friends to seek help on behalf of a veteran.

Because of intensive and comprehensive therapy, rehabilitation and life coaching, SHARE has become a model for centers nationwide. Experts in working with veterans provide medical consultation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and cognitive therapy, recreation therapy, case management, neuropsychology, chaplaincy and counseling. 4.
