o much for fancy cars, houses and jewelry.

Eighty-one percent of Americans believe their “most valuable asset” is their family, according to a new survey by Edward Jones and the nonprofit consumer-education organization Life Happens. And one quarter of respondents in the national sampling of adults confessed that their biggest fear was saddling their nearest and dearest with unexpected financial burdens if they’re unable to work or die prematurely. Which begs the question: If we’re so worried about protecting what we treasure most, why don’t more people have life insurance? Ask most experts, and they’ll tell you that such policies can help provide crucial resources for anyone with loved ones to support. And yet the latest figures show only 41 percent of U.S. households have individual life insurance. “Most Americans have little or no safeguards for their financial goals,” says Ken Cella, principal of the Client Strategies Group at the financial services firm Edward Jones. “They may understand the value of having emergency funds to cover unexpected financial expenses in the short term, but they’re less protected for the long-term financial implications.”

But let’s say that would-be policy holder wanted even more protection for his dependents. Forbes magazine recently calculated that that same incorrect median estimate - $500 - would buy a healthy, non-smoking, 30-something male a 20-year term policy with a million-dollar death benefit. Some people spend more than that in a year on caffe lattes. That said, prices do vary based on factors like age, health, amount of coverage, and whether you opt for term or permanent insurance. The former - the most affordable - covers a specific time frame (usually 20 years or less), while the latter stays in force for life (as long as you continue to pay the premiums). Online aids like Edward Jones’ complementary Life Insurance Needs calculator can help with factors to consider when determining how much life insurance may be appropriate for you. * The policy I have through work is good enough. And if you’re no longer employed there? Not only is group life insurance generally not portable, it typically only provides benefits equal to one or two times your annual salary. “Growing families usually need greater protection than that,” says Scott Thoma, an investment strategist at Edward Jones, “and they need coverage that’s not contingent on work status.”

Faisa Stafford, president of Life Happens, puts it even more bluntly: “Emergency savings aren’t a long-term financial solution, especially if a family’s primary breadwinner were to die.”

Know that life insurance doesn’t simply assign a monetary value to someone’s life. Which brings us to another revealing finding of the Edward Jones-Life Happens “Protect What Matters” survey.

Much of the disconnect between what we’ll call “the urge to protect” and the reality on the ground can be blamed on one or both of the following misconceptions:

wo in five people say they’re more likely to win the lottery than lose their home in a fire, according to a 2019 national American Red Cross survey. Yet the odds of dying from exposure to fire or smoke (nearly 1 in 1,500) are greater than winning the lottery (typically 1 in millions). Because seven people die from home fires each day in the U.S., the Red Cross is working with community partners to prevent deaths and injuries through its Home Fire Campaign. Everyday Actions Cause Fires In the survey, 96 percent of U.S. adults said they’ve engaged in everyday activities that can cause home fires. This includes over 70 percent of people who have left the kitchen while cooking, which is the leading cause of home fires. Sensory Loss Can Bring Increased Risk of Isolation, Depression

A

ccording to a study by The University of Chicago, nearly 94 percent of older adults in the United States are living with at least one diminished sense. While many seniors experience hearing or vision loss, senses such as taste, touch and smell can also be affected.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia examined the impact of undiagnosed or untreated hearing issues in seniors ages 60 to 69 and found that for every 10 decibel drop in hearing sensitivity, the odds of social isolation increase by 52 percent. Natural Methods To Control Pests Around Your Home By Bugman

H

ere is some information on natural methods of controlling pests in and around your home. There is no reason to spray toxic pesticides in your home and endanger your family. Some pest control companies say their pesticide is made from chrysanthemum and is safe. It is not safe. Those pesticides contain other ingredients that are toxic. Natural pest management is the best method For most insects, you can mix ½ cup of Tabasco sauce with one onion and a half dozen cloves of garlic in a blender with 2 cups of water. Blend the material and let it stand for 24 hours. Then add two more cups of water and a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. You can kill any bugs in your house with a mixture of water (40%), alcohol (40%) and dish soap (20%). No need to ever use pesticides inside your home or business. There are good baits available for controlling cockroaches. You can put equal amounts of baking soda and sugar out in flat containers and they will take it. Make a roach dough by combining ½ c. powdered sugar and ¼ c. shortening or bacon drippings. Add ½ c. onions, ½ c. flour and 8 oz. baking soda. Add enough water to make a dough-like consistency. Make balls of bait and put them wherever you see roaches. You can also control roaches by putting down some duct tape, sticky side up. They will be attracted to the glue and get stuck. If you have roaches outside, put out some pie pans filled with beer. They will go in the pans and drown and they don’t check IDs. Don’t use Lite beer. They prefer good beer.

If you have silverfish, you can trap them by putting some flour in a glass jar and wrapping it with duct tape so they can climb up the sides. They will get in the jar but will not be able to get out If you have flies, you can cut the top off several plastic water bottles; invert the top into the lower portion forming a funnel. Put about two inches of apple cider vinegar in the bottle with a quarter teaspoon of sugar. Almost all flies, no matter what their normal food preference, will enter the trap. Gallon size milk jugs cut as described above and baited with apple cider vinegar and sugar will catch a lot of flies in a large building or yard. Here are some natural recipes for controlling garden pests that you may want to try. If you have mites, try mixing 4 tablespoons of buttermilk with a cup of all-purpose flour and a gallon of water. This mixture will suffocate the mites. Crush 3 oz. of garlic cloves and mix with 1 oz. of mineral oil. Let this mixture stand overnight, then strain. Mix 1 teaspoon of fish oil and one tablespoon of castile soap with a quart of water. Slowly combine the garlic mix with the fish oil mix. Then mix two tablespoons of this mixture with a pint of water in a sprayer. This is effective on some insects and mites. It may be easier to mix one tablespoon of a mild dish soap plus one teaspoon of a vegetable cooking oil with one quart of water. This can be sprayed on all plants. Remember to spray both the top and the underside of the leaves.

You can repel ants with a wide variety of products, including cinnamon, baking soda, cedar oil, talcum powder, chalk, coffee grounds, borax, garlic, broken egg shells, bone meal, black or red pepper, peppermint, paprika, chili powder and mint leaves.

For weed control you can mix 1 gallon of white vinegar, 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap and 1 cup of Epson salts in a garden sprayer. Spray weeds generously, wait a couple days, they’re dead. No reason to use toxic herbicides.

Most ants can also be controlled using a bait made from two tablespoons each of peanut butter and jelly mixed with one tablespoon of boric acid or borax. Place the bait where you see the ants foraging.

Four Tips For Preventing Dog Attacks On Mail Carriers

an you picture a member of your family attacking a mail carrier? Of course you couldn’t, but it happened 5,714 times last year across the nation.

It takes a long time to get over the fear.” When a dog attacks a letter carrier, the dog owner could be held liable for all medical expenses, repayment of lost work hours, replacement of the uniform and other costs, which can run into thousands of dollars. Here are four simple tips to prevent dog bite injuries that should be enforced year-round: Door Delivery: If a carrier delivers mail or packages to your front door, place your dog in a separate room and close that door before opening the front door.
