obert Seidler, a seasoned filmmaker, ruptured both eardrums while filming in an experimental aircraft. As an avid bicyclist, Seidler had always found that riding created a “Zen-like” environment where he could talk about important issues with those he loved. However, as his hearing worsened, this special environment fell silent. He became increasingly depressed and withdrawn, describing the loss as “profound as a death.” Seidler’s family and friends shared how his hearing loss affected them during an interview for an online docuseries, It’s Your Choice. Seidler’s daughter said, “Whenever I try to talk to him, I have to repeat everything at least once. Conversation loses its momentum.” Meanwhile, Seidler’s wife expressed concern that while biking he might miss sounds alerting him to oncoming dangers. One of Seidler’s closest friends shared the frustration that friends and family of a person with hearing loss will recognize: “Would you please get a hearing aid? Why won’t you do this?” Frustrations Associated With Hearing Loss For the person with limited hearing, the negative emotions often include: • Loneliness due to withdrawal from social situations because of inability to keep up with conversations • Embarrassment when misunderstanding what others say • Fear their disability will contribute to people thinking they’re “old” or “infirm” • Frustration at not being able to easily understand speech or audio from TV and movies • Anxiety, stress and grief that can contribute to depression. But they’re not the only ones affected. Friends feel hurt when their invitations to come over or go out on the town are always turned down. Family members run low on patience having to repeat themselves constantly, shout to be heard, and live with the television volume so loud it’s painful. Confronting Hearing Loss

Seidler finally met with a hearing care professional who diagnosed him as having a high-frequency loss and fitted him with a pair of hearing aids. It’s Good To Be Prepared For Bad Weather

he hurricane season in the United States runs from June 1 through November 30, though the storms have been known to occur at other times. For 2018, experts at Colorado State University believe, the country can expect an above average storm season, with 14 named storms and seven hurricanes, three of them major. Regardless of whether these weather predictions come true, it’s always a good idea for home and business owners to take the necessary steps ahead of the storm warnings and the inevitable rush for emergency supplies. What To Do Home and business owners can take a simple but proactive course of action. For example, preparations should start earlier than the issued hurricane warnings. 1. Getting a generator can be a good idea. They keep critical appliances running. Lights stay on, devices stay charged and weather updates are available on television, radio or online. Most tropical storms cause a disruption in electricity. Depending on the storm’s intensity, damage to the electrical infrastructure can be extensive. Downed power lines, flooding, fallen structures, debris and other obstacles will affect the speed of power restoration, so it’s important to prepare for an outage duration that may become uncomfortable. A portable generator should be exercised every month. Schedule maintenance if needed. When you get a portable generator, use a sizing calculator to gauge your needs. Additionally, homeowners who seek greater peace of mind from an automatic home standby generator should schedule an in-home assessment, as automatic home standby units take time to get installed.

“It’s better to be ready for a nonevent than it is to be caught off guard by a strong storm,” explained Russ Minick, chief marketing officer at Generac Power Systems. “We believe we can offer manageable ways to guide home owners and businesses through the storm season, but staying safe starts with preparedness.” 2. An emergency hurricane kit for the family and any pets should be easily accessible within the home. In addition to food and bottled water, the kit should include a flashlight, first aid kit, battery-powered radio, a whistle to signal for help, and an assortment of hand tools. If someone in the home is dependent on electricity for lifesustaining medical equipment, review the family plan to access backup power or make arrangements to relocate when storm warnings are issued. 3. Outages and the need for fuel go hand in hand. During a power outage, you still might need to be out and about—maybe even evacuate the area—so ensuring that your car is fueled is important. In a worst-case scenario, your car can serve as a source of light, heat and electricity. A portable generator is far better suited to provide backup power, though, so make sure it has clean fuel, as well. And make sure any fuel you store is kept in approved containers. Model Your Expectations Your teens grew up watching you drive, learning your habits and creating their own concept of “safe driver” based on your actions. Parents of new teen drivers should follow all the rules of the road, which includes keeping smartphones out of reach or paired with hands-free systems.

Talk About Accidents

Provide Practical Knowledge Adults pick up all sorts of useful car knowledge over a lifetime of driving. Most teenagers don’t have any practical skills. Parents need to provide useful knowledge, including: • How to change a tire—Show teenagers where the spare tire is, how to access the jack and what steps they need to safely change a tire. Get outside and get your hands dirty. • What to have on hand—This includes a spare GPS in the glove box, a firstaid kit in the backseat or trunk, snow shovel, a jerrican and blankets or warm clothing in case they become stranded.

Teens need to know what they should do if an accident occurs. In all cases—even minor parking lot scrapes—teenagers must have their insurance information on hand and request the same from any other drivers involved. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “drivers ages 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.” Mitigate the risk by talking frankly about accidents with your teen. Become Credit Savvy And Help Better Protect Your Identity

ow much do you know about credit, credit reports, credit scores and how they work? Even if the answer is “not much,” there are resources available to help you learn more about credit and put you in the driver’s seat. 1. Educate yourself. The three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion—have information on their websites about how credit scores and credit reports work; what credit bureaus do; and how your decisions may impact your credit. You can also find information on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) websites. 2. Consider restricting access. Security freezes and credit report locks have the same impact on your credit reports, but there are differences. Learning about them may help you decide if one may be right for you. Both generally restrict certain access to your credit reports. Unless you temporarily lift or permanently remove a security freeze, or unlock your credit reports, they can’t be accessed to open new accounts—with certain exceptions. These may include: a. Companies like Equifax Global Consumer Solutions that provide you with access to your credit report or credit score or monitor your credit file b. Companies you have an existing account or relationship with c. Federal, state and local government agencies d. Collection agencies acting on behalf of companies you owe e. Fraud alerts are free, and you only need to place a fraud alert with one bureau—the other two will be notified. A fraud alert encourages lenders and creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting you credit. If you have a police or FTC report showing you’re the victim of identity theft, you can request a seven-year extended fraud alert.
