When thinking about retirement, your main focus may center around not being a burden to your loved ones. Pressure Ulcers Cost U.S. Healthcare $10.2 Billion and Contribute to Nearly 29,000 Hospital Deaths Each Year

A

merican healthcare, renowned for pioneering new technology to save lives, has all but ignored one of the most costly and deadly HospitalAcquired Conditions (HACs), which the federal government defines as preventable patient injuries. While the number of other HACs has decreased by 8 percent, pressure ulcers have been resistant to improvement efforts. They continue to grow by 10 percent annually. Pressure ulcers are both costly and deadly. The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that pressure ulcers add $10.2 billion to U.S. healthcare costs. As the chart above shows, pressure ulcers are associated with more than 45 percent of the nation’s 63,619 HAC-related deaths and are the leading contributor to HAC-related deaths. Costly, deadly problem Averaging the impact among the nation’s 5,534 hospitals means that each will treat more than 127 pressure ulcers, write off more than $1.8 million in unreimbursed treatment costs and see more than five pressure ulcer patients die every year. Medicine has wrestled with the problem of pressure ulcers for generations. Their prevention relies on physically moving or turning a patient at frequent intervals to relieve pressure on different parts of the body. Unfortunately, turning a patient can slip on the priority list of busy hospital staff. Technology that monitors patient movement and notifies nurses when a patient needs to be turned exists and is available throughout the United States. Dozens of studies presented in public medical forums demonstrate

that a wearable patient-monitoring technology helps hospitals prevent pressure ulcers, reduce their medical costs and save lives. These studies all monitored patients at risk for pressure ulcers using the Leaf Patient Monitoring System, the only system on the market designed exclusively to help providers prevent pressure ulcers. One randomized trial of more than 1,200 patients at a large California academic medical center concluded that the pressure ulcer incidence rate was 74 percent lower among patients monitored by the wearable monitoring system. Tech can save lives, money Applying the same rate of reduction to the national problem, the deployment of wearable technology could save more than 21,000 lives and nearly $7.5 billion in unreimbursed healthcare costs each year. For the average hospital, that would mean $1.36 million in annual savings. Technology can help our understaffed clinical teams reduce the risk of very preventable pressure ulcers. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT.

Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security— protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home.

• Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth.

How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Minor Steps Can Help Control Cockroaches By Bugman

C

ockroaches will be active very soon, but they don’t have to be in and around your home. There are a variety of easy and inexpensive measures you can take to control and prevent them. First, inspect all incoming food products, boxes, and any used furniture or appliances for the presence of cockroaches or their egg capsules so you have an idea of the extent of the problem and the location. Once you know their source, there are a number of good home remedy baits for controlling cockroaches. • You can put equal amounts of baking soda and sugar out in flat containers, and they will take it and die. • Another option is to catch roaches with tape. Place duct tape down, sticky side up, and the glue on the tape will attract them. • Outside, you can place pie pans filled with beer, which roaches love, and the pests will enter and drown. No ID checks required! Commercially available is Niban Bait, made from boric acid. This product might be a good option if you are in an area where roaches are very common. It can be purchased online. One local supplier is www. pestcontrolsupplies.com. When using Niban, put it under and behind appliances, around hot water heaters, inside lower cabinets, in the garage and in other places roaches will hide. To prevent roaches, do not store paper bags anywhere in the kitchen. Seal any holes or crevices around plumbing under sinks and behind toilets. Regularly vacuum and clean floors under kitchen appliances. Keep drains closed at night to prevent insects from coming up from the sewer system. Also, get your attic and crawlspace, if you have one, dusted with foodgrade diatomaceous earth. Types of cockroaches you may encounter include the following:

American cockroaches The American cockroach feeds on a wide variety of plant and animal material and is commonly found in sewer systems. It will come up the drains at night and enter the living space of a home. It also likes homes that have crawl spaces under them. The American cockroach is the largest of the home-infesting roaches in the country, reaching a little more than 1½ inches in length. It is dark brown with yellowish band around its thorax (section behind head). Oriental cockroaches Oriental cockroaches, or “waterbugs,” are found throughout the United States. They are about an inch long. The female is all black, and the male has two brown wing tips, but it cannot fly. These roaches are common in sewer systems and will come up the drains into the homes. They are also common in underground debris outside and love stacks of firewood. German cockroaches The German cockroach is the most prolific of the roaches. It is small, dark brown with two distinct black stripes on its thorax. It will feed on almost anything. If left unchecked, the population can severely infest a home or business quickly. They are most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms. When you are controlling German roaches, you should use German Roach Pheromone Traps as well as some of the baits mentioned previously. Head Off A Head Lice Infestation Before It Happens

H

ead lice love every season and anyone with a head of hair. They’re not going anywhere. If you find lice, treat with a product that kills both lice and eggs to avoid needing to retreat seven days later for hatching eggs that combing may have missed. Fortunately, if you want to reduce your head lice infestation odds, you can be proactive when it comes to preventing head lice.

2. Reduce risk by putting long hair in a braid, bun or ponytail. The longer the hair, the greater the risk for contracting lice from headto-head contact.

Whether the family is heading off to school, spring break or to camp, have a lice prevention plan in place. You want your kids to make friends but not with lice. The most common way children spread head lice is from direct head-to-head contact at social gatherings or school. Not only are nits and lice so small that they can be easily missed, but it also takes four to six weeks for itching symptoms to start. Here’s how you can protect your children and keep them from being “The One” to bring lice home. 1. Perform head lice checks before and after your child is in head-tohead contact with other children. Check your children for lice and nits before vacationing or sending them off to camp and conduct weekly head checks throughout the year. Many camps and boarding schools do head lice checks when your child arrives; you don’t want that to be when you find out you have a problem.

3. Be proactive. Once a child returning from spring break or camp is diagnosed with a lice infestation, family and friends have already been exposed for weeks as the infestation was growing. That’s how lice outbreaks multiply. If you’ve been exposed, switch to a daily shampoo designed to kill undetected lice with each wash so any potentially contracted lice don’t build into an infestation, and use a daily repellent spray to keep lice from hair.
