Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease.

Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs.

f you are—or care about—a millennial, someone between the ages of 18 and 35, here’s something you may care to consider:

Many millennial men—those age 26 and under—must register with the Selective Service. This applies to those native born and immigrants alike, regardless of status. What You Can Lose Failure to register is a violation of federal law and could mean a $250,000 fine, a prison term or both. What You Can Gain While most young men are aware of this and register promptly, within 30 days of their birthdays, they may not recall all the benefits registration can bring. Registration is required for: • Federal student loans and grant programs worth billions of dollars altogether

• Federal job training under the Workforce Investment Act • Federal jobs or security clearance as a contractor • U.S. citizenship for immigrants • Driver’s licenses in some places. Some people even send in their registration information as early as age 17 years and 3 months. The Selective Service System keeps the information on file, processes it automatically and sends an acknowledgment card. What You Can Do Fortunately, it’s not difficult to do. Many high schools have volunteer registrars to assist students with signing up. In addition, millennial students and graduates can check block #22 on the federal FAFSA application or go online at www.sss.gov from a smartphone or computer. Getting Out Your Lawn Mower: Safety Tips To Remember

pring is on its way and home owners are eager to get out their lawn mowers and start planting, trimming and sprucing. Before you fire up your outdoor power equipment, look over these smart tips.

3. Drain old fuel. Don’t leave fuel sitting in the tank for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) left in the system will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system.

“We know everyone is eager to get outside and start working in their yards. But remember to keep safety in mind,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

4. Use only E10 or less fuel. Some gas stations may offer 15 percent ethanol (E15) gas or higher ethanol fuel blends, but any fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol can damage—and is illegal to use in—small engine equipment not designed for it.

“Doing some basic maintenance will ensure your equipment operates safely and gets the job done,” said Kiser. Before you use a mower, trimmer, blower, chain saw, pruner or other piece of outdoor power equipment this season, OPEI says, remember to inspect the equipment, review owner’s manuals, and review safety procedures. Here are tips to help: 1. Get out your owner’s manual. Follow all guidelines for your outdoor power equipment and familiarize yourself with the controls. If you have lost your manual, look it up online. 2. Inspect your equipment. Check for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take your equipment to a qualified service representative.

5. Label your fuel can with the date of purchase and ethanol content of the fuel. Never put “old” gas in your outdoor power equipment. If you don’t know the date of purchase, dispose of the fuel in the can safely and buy fresh fuel. 6. Clean your equipment. Remove any dirt, oil or grass stuck to it. aring for an aging parent can be a great challenge. And as our beloved seniors age, their primary caregivers, commonly their children, need to initiate many difficult conversations. Volunteer Opportunity For Veterans

T

he nation’s nearly 22 million veterans may not be aware of a volunteer opportunity that continues on the tradition of purpose, camaraderie and service to the country and community: becoming a volunteer firefighter. Why Volunteer in the Fire Service Many veterans find joining a local fire department involves values they can uniquely appreciate, such as loyalty, honor, courage, discipline, teamwork and respect. Plus, the need is great. Seven out of 10 firefighters and emergency responders are volunteers, and volunteer firefighters save communities nationwide an estimated $140 billion a year. However, many local departments are struggling to meet staffing needs as call volume has tripled in the last 30 years and departments’ roles in communities continue to expand. Many community members are unaware of this need. A National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) survey found 41 percent of respondents did not know that their department used volunteers and 79 percent did not know their department was looking for more volunteers. Fortunately, anyone can become a volunteer firefighter—they come from all types of backgrounds and professions and encompass all ages, genders, races and ethnicities. Veterans are especially well equipped to volunteer as emergency responders, and it provides a sense of purpose, commitment, and lifesaving service to the community that few other volunteer opportunities can offer. Certain departments may have specific requirements, such as a high school degree, a physical or a background check, but when it comes down to it, volunteering as a first responder is all about having the heart and drive to make a difference where it’s needed most. And who can understand that better than a veteran? New recruits are trained by the department. Skills to learn vary based on the department’s response requirements, but training may cover a wide array of emergency situations such as fires, emergency medical incidents, terrorist events, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, water rescue emergencies and other public service calls.
