A common misconception is that every person’s full retirement age is the same. However, while 62 is the earliest at which you can collect partial Social Security benefits, eligibility for full benefits begins at 66 if you were born between 1943 and 1954 and can be later, depending upon the year you were born. This knowledge will help you work with your advisor to see the most accurate picture of your retirement income needs. Look up your full retirement age at SSA.gov. 4. How will you and your firm work in my best financial interest? When choosing an advisor, it is important to speak with a professional who is registered. Before you agree to work together, ask the advisor about her experience, the other clients she has helped and the advisor’s retirement planning approach. This is an important relationship, so make sure you select a financial professional who you feel understands your goals. 5. How are financial advisors compensated? Financial advisors are typically compensated in one of two ways: commission-based, meaning a sum of money that is paid to a financial advisor upon completion of purchase or sale of securities, or fee-based, meaning a fee based upon a percentage of assets under investment management. How to Age with Optimism

H

aving a “glass half full” approach to life has long been considered important for overall wellness. But evidence suggests that there may be truth in this folk wisdom. Humana recently surveyed 2,000 people aged 60 and over, and found that 87 percent of seniors who identify themselves as “most optimistic” reported their health as good to excellent. This is compared to 44 percent for those who said they’re “least optimistic.” Also, the most optimistic people reported nine fewer physically unhealthy and seven fewer mentally unhealthy days per month than their least optimistic counterparts. Seniors who rated themselves as most optimistic also reported positively on other attributes linked to health, including sleep, confidence and overall happiness. * 91 percent of the most optimistic respondents reported feeling confident in the past week, while only 52 percent of the least optimistic respondents did, a difference of 39 percentage points. * 90 percent of the most optimistic respondents reported feeling happy in the past week, compared to 44 percent of the least optimistic respondents, a difference of 46 percentage points. * And only 31 percent of the most optimistic respondents reported getting a restless night’s sleep in the past week, while 62 percent of the least optimistic respondents did, another difference of 31 percentage points. Despite these impressive numbers, having an optimistic mindset is often easier said than done. The stresses of life, social stereotypes and one’s natural temperament can all impede approaching aging with optimism. Dr. Yolangel Hernandez Suarez, Humana vice president and chief medical officer for care delivery, has the following advice for anyone struggling to stay on the sunny

side of life: 1. Take ownership and recognize that your health is your own. To achieve your best health, you need to set personal goals - just for you. 2. Engage with your doctor or other health care professional and build a trusting relationship. 3. Find a higher purpose that makes you excited to get up in the morning. Humana’s survey found that the majority of respondents (86 percent) who identify as optimists also rank a sense of purpose as an important attribute for aging. 4. Remain socially engaged, not isolated, and nurture close relationships. The importance of social engagement is recognized by the 71 percent of Humana survey respondents who identify as optimists and get together with friends or relatives either monthly or weekly. Further, 80 percent of optimists say maintaining an active social life is an important motivator to stay healthy. 5. Stay active and remember that physical activity is important. Find something that’s right for you and that you like to do. Almost all of the most optimistic survey respondents (97 percent) say remaining physically active is a major motivator for retaining good health. 6. Practice gratitude and make it a habit to look for and appreciate everything you’re thankful for in life. “As a boomer myself, I know that the majority of the decisions about my own health take place outside of a doctor’s office,” said Dr. Hernandez Suarez. “With the knowledge that optimism may be linked to health and wellbeing, I’m focused on making positive health decisions through all aspects of my life. A Heart Disease Risk Even Your Doctor May Not Know About

f you’re like most people, you’re familiar with LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein), particles in the blood that carry what is often referred to as “bad” and “good” cholesterol. There is, however, another lipoprotein particle you should be aware of: lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a), which poses a high risk of early cardiovascular disease. The Danger High levels of Lp(a) travel through the bloodstream and enter into the arteries, leading to gradual narrowing of the artery that can limit blood supply to the heart or brain. This increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and aortic stenosis. Lp(a) is the most prevalent genetic risk factor for coronary heart disease and aortic stenosis. One in five people have inherited high Lp(a)-63 million in the U.S. Anyone with a parent with elevated Lp(a) has a high risk of inheriting it. People with high levels of Lp(a) can be at risk even if they’re physically fit and have “normal” LDL and HDL cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, for many, the first sign of the disease is a heart attack or stroke. A Simple Test May Be The Answer The good news is a simple blood test measures Lp(a) concentrations, though it’s not included in most standard lipid panel tests. Current cholesterol guidelines miss 8 percent of people who have a cardiovascular event whose only risk factor is high Lp(a). Knowing Lp(a) levels could be the first step in preventing up to 120,000 cardiovascular events in the U.S. every year.

During the exam, her dentist took a moment to feel the sides of her face, jaw and neck, looking for signs of oropharyngeal cancer—a type of cancer that occurs at the back of the mouth or top of the throat. Her dentist noticed an enlarged lymph node on the right side of Wexler’s neck and sent Sandy to see her physician.

This means more and more dentists are talking with patients about health issues that might at first pass seem unrelated but can actually affect oral health. HPV vaccination was first discussed for its benefit in preventing cervical cancer in women, but there are other HPV-related cancers, including those at the back of the throat and the top of the mouth. The HPV vaccine can prevent infection with those strains of HPV responsible for 60 percent of oropharyngeal cancer cases. Because of this, consistent with the recommendation of the CDC, many dentists are now recommending both their male and female adolescent patients get the vaccine.

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 51,540 new cases of oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer diagnosed this year and 10,030 deaths from them. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that oropharyngeal cancer is on the rise.

At your next dental appointment, don’t be surprised if your dentist checks for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and talks to you about the benefits of the HPV vaccine. HPV vaccination can prevent cancers; a thorough exam for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancers could save your life.
