he choice about where to live in retirement is one of the most crucial decisions that a senior makes. It’s not just a major financial consideration, it’s also a highly emotional issue as a retiree’s home is often the anchor to their golden years.

“One needs to think about where to live, how long to stay there, and whether to move later in retirement,” writes Wade Pfau, Ph.D., professor of retirement income at The American College, and contributor to Forbes. com. “There are plenty of justifications for either staying put or moving early in retirement.” There are a few important questions that a senior should ask before deciding whether to stay in their home or to relocate during retirement: 1. Are you making accurate comparisons? If you stay in your home, you may need to make improvements or renovations in the future to accommodate changing needs. If you move to a new home, you may incur expenses associated with fix-up costs and moving expenses. Make sure you are considering total costs in either scenario. 2. Are you open to renting? “It can be hard for retirees who have spent their lives building equity in their homes—and being taught about the virtues of homeownership—to become renters,” reported The Wall Street Journal. “But renting a home in a city before buying can give retirees a chance to really know if it’s the place they want to spend retirement.” Moreover, the cost of ownership in many locations actually exceeds the cost of renting, so it may be prudent to consider this option for both short- and long-term possibilities. 3. Where will you have access to important services? Every consumer looks into the quality of restaurants, supermarkets and other day-to-day retail offerings when scouting out a possible new residential location. Seniors must be especially concerned about practical considerations such as the number of nearby physicians who accept Medicare, convenient transportation for those who are unable to drive, and commu-
nity centers with special programs for seniors. 4. Would you prefer to age in place or have a change of scenery? Many people dream about moving to some exotic location for their golden years, but the truth is that 85 percent of retirees stay in the area where they raised their families, according to Realtor. com. Think seriously about whether you’re willing to trade your current community for a new one, weighing the pros and cons of aging in place versus charting a new course. Whether you choose to stay in your home or move during retirement, it will be important to have ample cash on hand that can fund renovations of your existing home or the purchase of a new one. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy any time you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Unique Mushroom Extract AHCC® Shows Promise For Lyme Disease
O

nce almost unheard of, Lyme disease is now a household word. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are 20,000 new cases a year, and 10 percent of Americans say they know someone with chronic Lyme disease. Yet the illness is tricky to diagnose. In the early phases, Lyme disease causes symptoms that can easily be mistaken for a case of the flu. And while some people see a distinctive bull’s-eye− shaped rash, not everyone does, and the rash doesn’t always look the same. As a result, it can take weeks or even months to get a correct diagnosis. Worse yet, as time elapses, the bacterium that causes the disease becomes much harder to eradicate—making it more difficult to treat it effectively. Fortunately, a new pilot study shows that AHCC, a proprietary medicinal mushroom extract developed in Japan, can help alleviate the symptoms of both early and chronic Lyme disease. Lyme disease: A hidden time bomb Spread by black-legged ticks, Lyme disease initially causes symptoms such as rash, headaches, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, and joint pain. Timely treatment with antibiotics can be effective, but if the disease is not caught and treated early, more serious symptoms such as short-term memory loss and heart palpitations can emerge, as the bacterium spreads to the brain and heart. Although early-detected Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics lasting 14 to 21 days, untreated chronic Lyme disease can continue for weeks, months, or even years after the tick bite. Those who have reached the chronic stage of Lyme disease run the risk of symptoms worsening and becoming long-term—causing emotional and physical stress. AHCC: a potent immune system modulator AHCC is an extract of the mycelia (root systems) of medicinal mushrooms and the best-selling immune supplement in Japan. It has been shown to modulate the body’s immune system in more than 20 human clinical studies and is used in more than 1,000 health care facilities around the world. Rather than being directly anti-bacterial, AHCC increases the numbers and/or activity of several kinds of immune cells such as natural killer cells, T cells, and dendritic cells, as well as cytokines, the chemical messengers of the immune system. Thanks to this ability to dial up immune response, AHCC has been shown to help prevent or treat a variety of bacterial and viral diseases such as HPV and hepatitis C in humans, and MRSA, influenza, and West Nile in animals. Lead researcher says study results are “a truly exciting finding” The study, conducted at The Salerno Center for Complementary Medicine in New York by Dr. John Salerno, enrolled 12 patients with a definitive diagnosis of early or chronic Lyme disease. The participants took three grams of AHCC per day for eight weeks. At the beginning of the study, after four weeks, and again after eight weeks, Salerno and his associates measured symptoms such as rash, flulike symptoms, lymph node swelling, neck stiffness, and issues with the eyes, joints, and muscles, as well as neurological and cardiovascular symptoms. In addition, they looked for evidence of the bacterium and examined markers of immune activity. After eight weeks, AHCC had improved the following symptoms: flulike symptoms; eye, joint, and muscle problems; and neurological and cardiovascular issues. C O M M E N TA R Y Locking Or Freezing Your Credit Report Is One Important Step You Can Take To Help BetterProtect Yourself Against Identity Theft

ou may have heard the terms “security freeze” and “credit report lock.” While they are sometimes used interchangeably, they aren’t exactly the same. While both are designed to help you restrict certain access to your credit information, they do so in different ways. A credit report lock may allow you to lock and unlock your credit report online or on a mobile device through an app, using a username and password. Options to lock your credit report are available from each of the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. If you’re applying for insurance or credit—buying a car, for example, or applying for a loan—you will need to unlock your credit report to allow a credit check. Equifax now offers Lock & Alert, a free service that allows you to quickly lock and unlock your Equifax credit report online or on your smartphone. A security freeze is also known as a credit freeze. Placing, lifting or removing a security freeze can be done online, by phone or by mail. To lift or remove a security freeze, you will need the PIN you receive when you place it. Security freezes are subject to regulation by each state. Once a freeze is placed on your credit reports, it prevents access by certain third parties, such as lenders or creditors you’re requesting new credit from, and insurance companies when you apply for insurance coverage. Security freezes must be placed separately at each of the three major credit bureaus. Depending on the state where you live, you may pay a fee at each credit bureau for placing, lifting or removing a security freeze. Equifax has waived fees to place, lift or remove security freezes through June 30. Security freezes and credit report locks don’t keep everybody out. There are exceptions, which may vary by state, as to who can still access your credit report when it is frozen or locked. These exceptions may include: • Companies like Equifax Global Consumer Solutions that provide you with access to your credit report or credit score or monitor your credit file • Companies you have an existing account or relationship with • Federal, state and local government agencies • Collection agencies acting on behalf of companies you owe • For fraud detection purposes • Companies that wish to make preapproved offers of credit or insurance to you • Companies reviewing your application for employment.
