I
f putting all your financial information online and in one place sounds like a good idea, there are many companies— often called data aggregators—ready to help you organize your financial life. However, before you share your account information and other sensitive financial details with data aggregators, it pays to know how these services operate and how to protect yourself from potential privacy and security risks. Some data aggregators provide a single place to view a simple snapshot of your overall finances. Others offer financial and tax planning, budgeting, and the ability to track home value and mortgage information. Some provide additional options, including portfolio analysis, advice, credit monitoring, bill paying and more. Depending on the provider and services you choose, you can be charged monthly or annual fees for data aggregation. You can aggregate information through a nonfinancial organization or add information from outside financial accounts to an existing financial provider, such as a bank or investment firm. In either case, aggregation is possible because you provide the aggregator with the log-in information for your financial accounts. For example, say you want to aggregate and track information from an IRA, a 401(k) account, a savings account and two credit cards, all residing with separate financial institutions. To create a single dashboard, the aggregator will ask you to provide five separate sets of log-in credentials so that it can access each one of those financial accounts. Your security credentials let the aggregation service grab or “scrape” this data, often daily. Scraping is an automated process involving a code that goes to the chosen account websites, registers using your security credentials, and collects applicable account information. As an alternative, a growing number of financial institutions offer aggregators an “application programming interface” (API) to transfer data from the financial institution to the aggregator. APIs provide a contractual agreement between the aggregator and the financial institution—and give consumers the ability to authorize access, limit scope, and specify whether fund transfers are permitted. Many customers appreciate having a single snapshot of multiple
accounts. But sharing security credentials for financial account information comes with risks. • Providing access to your personal financial information exposes you to privacy and security risks, including potential vulnerability to cyberfraud, unauthorized transactions, and identity theft. • Many data aggregators are not subject to the same regulations that registered financial institutions are subject to, particularly in areas of data privacy and security. • If the aggregator sells investment products, you might get sales recommendations from that entity. You can use these tips to help weigh the benefits of aggregation against the risks of sharing your security credentials. • When you authorize a third party to facilitate payments on your behalf, make sure that payments are making it to the intended destination. • Read the user agreement. Know what rights you are granting with respect to accessing your financial accounts and using your data. • Verify that the aggregator will access only the information it needs to provide the desired services to you. • Understand whether the aggregator has the authority to share your security credentials, data, or access to your accounts with another service provider, partner or affiliate. • Ask about the cybersecurity policies in place with the service provider and know what you can expect in the event of a loss due to a data breach or unauthorized access. Finally, do your own online research and due diligence. Look up any reviews, complaints or lawsuits against the data aggregator you contemplate using. Raising Kids Who Speak For The Bees
R
emember the Lorax, who spoke for the trees? Dr. Seuss’ tale laid important groundwork by encouraging the next generation to care about the environment. As Seuss wrote, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Regardless of age or ability, students who care “a whole awful lot” can become some of bees’ best advocates. With pollinators facing challenges including a lack of forage (food) that provides them with proper nutrition and habitat, we have a great opportunity to empower the next generation to “speak for the bees” and give them the tools to help. Impact Beyond the Classroom When kindergartners at The Orchard School in Indianapolis learned they wouldn’t have chocolate without pollinators, what began as a snack time discussion led to a burning desire to help. Their curriculum model allowed students to work together to plant and maintain a pollinatorattractant garden, which more than 15 species visit regularly. To further this student-driven impact, the school applied for funding through the Bayer Feed a Bee program, which provides grants to create forage areas to feed bees and other pollinators. This spring, the grant will fund the renovation of an older butterfly garden, broadening it to serve more pollinators by planting native wildflowers and installing “pocket beds” of annual flower species. Students across grade levels will participate in plant selection, plant rearing and garden design.
“There is nothing more powerful in education than student voice,” wrote Vicky Prusinski, science specialist at The Orchard School. “Funding for this project quite literally allows my students to put their money where their mouths are and do what they passionately feel compelled to do.” Agriculture-Focused Camp Programs Gateway to the Arctic Camp outside of Talkeetna, Alaska, also got a Feed a Bee grant to provide hands-on education for young people. The nonprofit teaches campers the significance of serving those in need and the value of hard work through fun activities involving sustainability, farming and environmental stewardship. For years, the camp planted wildflowers to attract pollinators to its 3 acres of gardens, and this summer it will dedicate an entire field as forage for native bees and other pollinators. Campers of all abilities, including those with special needs, can discover the connection between bees and the crops they pollinate. The Feed a Bee program celebrates this program not only because of its commendable mission but because the organization’s grant meant Feed a Bee met its goal of funding forage for pollinators in all 50 states. That number is even higher for millennial parents, with 80 percent planning to focus on debt reduction this year. A Better Idea “While reducing debt can be a worthwhile endeavor, a singular focus on it at the expense of other planning can be dangerous to a family’s overall financial well-being,” advised Brian Madgett, vice president, New York Life. “Adopting a protection-first financial planning approach is crucial, as even the best-laid plans can get derailed without a strong long-term foundation.” Despite carrying debt that might prevent them from achieving financial stability, parents are optimistic about their finances in the year ahead. Fifty-eight percent expect their finances to improve this year and 61 percent believe they’ll be better prepared for the unexpected. Younger parents have a particularly sunny outlook, tying their ability to pay down debts to a brighter financial future: Sixty-five percent say their finances will improve this year and 77 percent say their families will be better prepared for the unexpected. Optimism may not lead to action, however. Just 28 percent of parents believe it’s important to have a financial plan in place to care for their
children in case something happens to them. Further, fewer parents than last year (30 percent versus 38 percent) are planning to seek expert advice this year. However, younger parents—despite their focus on debt—are more likely to recognize the importance of long-term planning, with 44 percent saying they will seek professional financial planning advice this year.
