New Report Reveals Gaps in Private School Teachers’ Training

here are more than 34,000 private schools educating more than 4.9 million K−12 students in America, according to the most recent federal data. And as school choice programs that help families afford to send their children to private schools continue to expand across the U.S., those numbers will only continue to grow. But are our future teachers and school leaders well-prepared to work in both public and private schools?

New research released last month answers that question. The Private School Teacher Skills Gap, a report by EdChoice’s National Director of Research Dr. Michael McShane, reveals that teacher training programs have room to improve.

With a few simple changes, educator preparation programs could provide pathways for preservice teachers and school leaders to get the training they need to be successful in private schools. They could cross-list courses from other departments— such as finance, law and even theology— and give students credit for taking them.

Private and Public School Teachers Share Skills The study found that the list of skills public and private school teachers and leaders need to be successful is much longer than the list of skills they don’t share. Characteristics both need include being innovative, communication, critical thinking, organization, planning, understanding research, flexibility, acting as a role model and being a team player.

In states with large private school populations or large private school choice programs, the demand for well-trained private school teachers might be high enough for colleges of education to consider offering prep programs specifically geared to the private sector. Spring Is Coming, So Are The Ants By Bugman

N

ot all ants are the same. Recently I went to a house where a family had an infestation of them. Two pest control companies had given the residents quotes for treatment over the the phone, without knowing what kind of ants they were. Even when the exterminator saw them, the person couldn’t identify them. Still, the company suggested treatment via spraying and baits. Ultimately, the residents called me for guidance. Similarly, when I visited the home, I didn’t recognize the species of ants either. I knew they were big-headed ants, but I would need to examine them more closely using a microscope to determine more. There are 33 species of big-headed ants in New Mexico, and you have to know specifically which species you are dealing with if you want to control them. When I viewed them under a microscope, it became clear from the shape and size of the antennae, that they are of a species that has very large colonies and that usually burrow under large boulders when winter approaches. They are not common house pests, but in this case they went under the person’s house. When they needed water, they came into the house via the expansion joints and kept getting into the sink. The residents tried some store-bought baits, but the ants ignored them. They did not want to spray pesticides along the interior baseboards because of the potential health hazards for their dogs. I told them that baits would not work very well with these ants because they feed on seeds. They are dimorphic, meaning they have minor workers and major workers. The minor workers gather seeds, and the major workers, with their large jaws, break the seeds open. They won’t take a bait unless it is in a seed-like form. The only bait I am aware of that may

work with these ants is Niban Bait in fine grade, made from boric acid. This bait is only available online. I recommended the people control the ants themselves by spraying along the baseboards with a cedar oil product. There are several brands. One is Wondercide. This will only last a week or so, but it is absolutely safe for their dogs. I also suggested they fill their sinks with a few inches of water and a little soap. If the ants wanted water, they would go into the sink and drown. The residents caught hundreds of ants this way. I also recommended that they put some diatomaceous earth behind or beneath the baseboards wherever it was possible. Using these varieties of methods, the residents were able to all but eliminate them without using any pesticides. There are about 225 species of ants in New Mexico - more than in all of Europe. Of course, the vast majority of them never enter homes, and you will never see them. However, there are a few species that don’t normally enter homes but will occasionally, and they need to be properly identified before a treatment is performed. Some of these ants are so obscure they don’t have common names. Keeping all of this in mind, there is usually more to controlling ants than merely identifying them as “sugar ants,” spraying the baseboards and putting out toxic bait stations. Make sure anyone you hire to control ants is competent in myrmecology and can properly identify them. In most cases, you can control the ants yourself as long as you get them identified. Talking With Your Health Care Provider About Kidney Health

hronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious health problem, affecting an estimated 30 million adults in the United States. Yet more than nine out of 10 people who have kidney disease don’t know they have it. You can’t reverse progressive kidney damage but you may be able to avoid or delay dialysis or a kidney transplant with medications and lifestyle changes. Understand Your Risk for Kidney Disease If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a family history of kidney failure, you are at risk for kidney disease. An estimated one in three people with diabetes, and one in five adults with high blood pressure, have CKD. Therefore, it’s important for people who are at risk for the disease to get tested. Get Tested Early Testing for kidney disease is simple—it involves a blood test and a urine test. Your health care provider uses a blood test to check how well your kidneys are filtering your blood and a urine test to check for protein in your urine. Talk with Your Health Care Provider If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a family history of kidney failure, talk with your health care provider about kidney disease. Stay informed and ask for the results of your kidney tests. You

can start the conversation with your health care provider by asking these three questions: 1. Have I been tested for kidney disease and how healthy are my kidneys? 2. How often should I get my kidneys checked? 3. What should I do to keep my kidneys healthy? Take Steps to Protect Your Kidney Health If you don’t have kidney disease but are at risk for it, your health care provider may suggest ways you can keep your kidneys healthy. Here are some steps you can take to protect your kidney health: • Manage your diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease • Make healthy food choices • Aim for a healthy weight • Make physical activity part of your routine • Get enough sleep—aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night • Stop smoking • Find healthy ways to cope with stress. Albuquerque Gearing Up To Host National Senior Games By Beverly Custer

lbuquerque is gearing up to host the National Senior Games, an Olympic-style two- week competition for ages 50 and older, this summer. With thousands of participants from across the United States expected to attend the festivities June 14-25, organizers anticipate the event will not only generate upwards of $30 million in tourism revenue for the city but also bring with it countless opportunities for locals to get involved.

HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable?
