f you own, run or work for any of the approximately 23 million small- to mid-sized businesses in America, chances are, you want more sales. So, how do you make it happen? By showing customers you care. In this world of impersonal interactions and instant communication, there’s enormous value and differentiation in creating empathy for the customer’s situation.

Sales training often piles on facts, figures and details that can turn a salesperson’s brain into a mish-mash of disconnected information with no context. So, keep it simple. Train salespeople to be empathetic, consultative professionals by building on the things they already know. They know how they expect to be treated as customers—because we are all customers, right? They know how they feel when people treat them unfairly or push them into a decision. They know when someone is really listening to them, not pretending. So, start with a customer context as a way to build your story. Here is a three-step path toward building customer empathy in your sales teams. 1. Listen for emotion to find customer pain points: An interesting thing happens when salespeople ask questions: customers talk. What’s going on here? How long has that been going on? What have you tried so far to fix it? Here’s the secret: listen for emotion in their words—disappointed, frustrated, angry, tried repeatedly, no response. Then, repeat the customer’s exact words to confirm their pain point. “It sounds like you’re pretty frustrated...” Pain points are the issues or problems that are significant enough for the customer to make a change—and buy from you instead. 2. Teach a simple consulting model for value-based conversations focused on the customer’s pain points. I write 3 columns on the whiteboard labeled “What I heard (pain point),” “What we will do (solution),” and “That will help you (value).” Then, I ask the rep to give me one of her customer’s pain points. For example, “What I heard is that the odor in your restroom continues to be a problem, even though you’ve asked your service to fix it. What we will do is use a disinfectant that kills the germs causing the odor. That will help you have a restroom that consistently smells good for your customers and employees.” 3. Feel, felt, found is still a good formula for moving people from objections to closed deals. When a customer states an objection, try this: • Feel. Say something like, “I understand how you feel.” This lets customers know you heard them express their feelings, can relate, and understand why they feel the way they do. The customer feels validated instead of ignored.
• Felt. With a response such as, “Other people I’ve talked to have felt the same way,” you tell the customer the issue is not uncommon. He or she is not alone. It can be resolved. This also sets the rep up to position a way to positively address the issue and move on. • Found. “They found the situation improved right away after making the decision to ____.” Convey the idea that people get positive results and improvement after choosing your product or service. The last step is to ask for the deal! Help your reps find a simple closing statement that works for them. My favorite: “OK, let’s get the paperwork signed so we can get started right away.” If your sales team keeps these tips in mind and your customers in their hearts, then you may find more sales on your books. • Diane Emo is Vice President of Marketing for Coverall North America, Inc. -(NAPSI)

Welcome to the Frontier of Beer at the Santa Fe Farmers Market By Martin Frentzel
I
t sounds like Christmas in a keg, or a couple of dozen kegs: “Wafts of vanilla, bourbon, molasses and espresso notes” … “super malty backbone, piney citrus flavor” … “Biscuit, toasted, caramel and earthy tones” is how some beers brewed in New Mexico are described. One would have to travel from Farmington to Las Cruces and parts east and west to experience all the beers produced here. But you can get a jump on that road trip by buying a ticket for the Jan. 15 WinterBrew 2016, where 17 state breweries will offer their wares to interested beer patrons. The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, 1607 Paseo de Peralta. Tickets cost $25, or $5 for designated drivers who will be dining on food provided by Santa Fe brew pubs and a local food truck. The Frontier of Beer This is the fifth annual winter event sponsored by the New Mexico Brewers Guild, an organization dedicated to developing the craft brewing industry in New Mexico and inspiring “a culture of quality beer appreciation.” The guild calls New Mexico the “Frontier of Beer.” “We are riffing on the fact that New Mexico is on the map but not always on the radar,” says Christopher Goblet, beer ambassador for the guild. “People think of New Mexico as that place by Old Mexico … The double entendre is that we have some of the best beer in the country coming out of New Mexico.” If you doubt that, look at the websites of participating breweries. Santa Fe Brewing Company’s State Pen Porter won 14 awards between 1993 and 2012. La Cumbre’s Malpais Stout won silver medals at the Great Ameri-
can Beer Festival in 2011 and won the 2012 World Beer Cup. “Stouts, porters and winter warmers will be appropriate for the weather,” Goblet says, “but this is New Mexico after all, so there has to be a wide selection of IPA and lighter beer.” A “wide selection” translates into 75 beers on tap at WinterBrew. “We put on these festivals to introduce beer novices and connoisseurs to a variety of new offerings,” he says. Drink Responsibly Beer making is a science, Goblet says, and the state’s brewers are pushing the boundaries of technique and flavor. To enhance the experience, a premium commemorative glass is being provided to WinterBrew attendees. The glass is designed to enhance the flavors and aroma of the beers sampled. Ticket holders also receive a beer coupon that can be exchanged for a pint of their favorite brew. One should not count on becoming really intoxicated at WinterBrew, however, because the guild pays close attention to drinking age and consumption limits. What Happens When Your Body Can’t Regulate Calcium?
C
alcium is important for the development of strong bones and teeth.1 But it also plays a role in other important functions in the body. For instance, calcium helps blood to clot and supports nerve function, as well as muscle contractions, releasing hormones, and maintaining a normal heartbeat.2 If the body is unable to maintain the necessary levels of calcium in the blood (serum calcium), the consequences can be serious or even life-threatening.3 The parathyroid glands are small nodules located near the thyroid that produce parathyroid hormone, or PTH.4 This hormone regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.3 When levels of PTH are too low, it can lead to low levels of calcium and high levels of phosphate in the blood. In turn, this can cause a range of persistent physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms.3 Hypoparathyroidism A rare disease called Hypoparathyroidism is characterized by low or absent endogenous PTH with low levels of calcium in the blood.5 Hypoparathyroidism can affect someone at any age,5 and an estimated 70,000 patients in the United States are living with the chronic disorder.6 Hypoparathyroidism most often occurs following surgery such as a thyroidectomy, a common procedure for patients with thyroid cancer during which all or most of the thyroid gland is removed.7,8 Less commonly, Hypoparathyroidism can also be caused by some autoimmune disorders, genetic risk factors, increased levels of iron, copper, or iodine in the parathyroid glands, or may simply be undetermined.7 More females appear to be diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism relative to males, with a 3:1 predilection.6 How is Hypoparathyroidism diagnosed? Hypoparathyroidism can be diagnosed based on the identification of a patient’s symptoms by conducting a review of a patient’s medical history, a thorough physical exam, and specific laboratory tests. In some cases, genetic testing can be used to confirm a diagnosis.5
How is Hypoparathyroidism treated?
