Remember that the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is by getting your annual flu vaccine. It’s not too late to get vaccinated.
1) Get vaccinated. Everyone 6 months or older should get a yearly flu vaccine.
KNOW WHAT’S GOT YOU SICK
2) Stop the spread of germs by avoiding close contact with sick people. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Clean your hands often with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
Viruses cause infections like the common cold, flu, runny noses and most sore throats, and none of these are treated with antibiotics. Illnesses like strep throat, pneumonia and whooping cough are examples of illnesses caused by bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics.
3) If you get sick, take antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.
ANTIBIOTICS AREN’T ALWAYS THE ANSWER
Antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health and occurs when bacteria become resistant to the antibiotics designed to kill them. Antibiotic side effects range from minor—e.g., rash, dizziness, nausea, yeast infections— to very severe health problems, e.g., life-threatening allergic reactions or Clostridium difficile infection (also called C. difficile or C. diff), which causes diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage or death. When a patient needs antibiotics, the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects. Antibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common infections like pneumonia and life-threatening conditions like sepsis.
FIND OUT HOW TO FEEL BETTER Most healthy people with the flu have mild illness and recover in less than two weeks without needing medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick with flu symptoms, in most cases, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. If, however, you have flu symptoms and are at high risk of having complications from flu, or are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your healthcare professional. Your doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs to treat your illness. People at high risk of having complications from flu include young children, people 65 years of age and older, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions. Bomb Cyclone Preparedness: Four Easy Steps To Help Prevent Water-Pipe Damage
he unusually cold temperatures that the country is currently experiencing will cause all kinds of chaos, including frozen water pipes. If the pipes burst as a result of the cold, this can be a major nightmare—but something that can be prevented with the proper precautions.
• Feel the pipes with your hand to find the area of the pipe that is colder than others.
For climates that rarely see extremely cold temperatures like what we’re currently experiencing with the ‘bomb cyclone’ weather system, water pipes are particularly vulnerable to freezing due to a lack of insulation around the pipes.
• Use a screwdriver handle or another blunt object, to gently tap the pipe listening for a “solid” sound.
Prevent Problems Here are a few tips from Johns Manville to help prevent frozen water pipes: 1. If you know temperatures are going to be extremely cold, keep thermostats high and open cabinet doors under sinks that are located on outside walls. 2. Leave water dripping on all faucets, for two-handle faucets, have hot AND cold water dripping. 3. Wrap exposed water pipes with insulation. 4. Add insulation to walls to help keep the hidden pipes protected as well. “Adding insulation to exposed water pipes is one of the easiest DIY home-improvement projects to do,” says Tommy Knappich, VP and General Manager of Building Insulation at Johns Manville. “If you take further preventative measure in the future, adding wall insulation is not a difficult task and will help protect those pipes that are not exposed, and keep your home more comfortable in all types of weather.” How To Tell How will you know if your pipes have frozen? You’ll turn the faucet on and nothing will happen. This is the best-case scenario because it can be easily remedied. What you don’t want to happen is for the pipes to burst as a result of being frozen. If you notice that a pipe has frozen, search exposed pipes for the frozen area:
• Look for drips coming from the pipe, or frost build-up on the pipe.
What To Do Quick action to thaw the pipe will help prevent bursting. Once you’ve found where the pipe has frozen, here’s how to unthaw it: • Turn the faucet on, also turn on nearby faucets to a trickle. The water from adjoining faucets may get to the frozen section and help thaw the ice. • Use a hair dryer and run it back and forth along the pipe. Make sure to keep it moving any uneven or sudden heating can rupture the pipe. • Add salt to the frozen drain. • Wrap the pipe in hot towels, replacing them ever 5−10 minutes until the water is running. • DO NOT add boiling water to the pipe—a sudden temperature change will cause the pipe to burst. “Adding insulation can be a weekend project that will create peace-ofmind during these extreme weather situations,” said Knappich. “Installing the insulation properly can be just as important as adding insulation. Facing a Serious Health Condition—Stories of Strength and Life with a Rare Lung Disease
eing diagnosed with a serious disease can be devastating. That’s how Nick, 72, felt when he discovered he has a rare and severe lung condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or IPF. Ginger, 68, said learning she has IPF was the scariest time of her life. Chronic diseases such as IPF—which causes permanent scarring to the lungs, making breathing difficult—have an emotional impact in addition to the physical limitations they may cause. Caregivers and other loved ones share the burden too. It isn’t easy to adjust to the “new normal” of life with a serious health condition, whether it affects you or someone you are caring for, but learning how to manage the condition can empower you or your loved one to face the challenge. To encourage others with serious health conditions to take action in managing their diseases, Nick, Ginger and their families and friends share their stories of strength and support in facing IPF on www. aarp.org/ipf. Here are some of the lessons they’ve learned in their journeys: 1. Be proactive and learn about your options. If you are diagnosed with a chronic disease or other medical condition, it’s important to become educated about what options are available to manage it. Initiating conversations with your doctor and asking questions soon after diagnosis are important first steps. This is especially true if your disease is progressive, or worsens over time. IPF is one such progressive disease, as lung function lost due to scarring cannot be reversed. When Nick learned this, he discussed ways to manage the condition with his doctor, including FDA-approved medicines and a pulmonary rehabilitation program, which can help ease symptoms of breathlessness. “Through pulmonary rehab, I’ve learned how to recognize the signs of my oxygen level dropping and how to breathe efficiently, and those two things have made a big difference,” Nick says.

Support groups provide an opportunity to connect with others with similar experiences, and the mental and emotional support they offer helps people develop a more resilient mindset. Nick and Ginger have also found comfort in leaning on their loved ones during difficult times. For Ginger, it’s her son Kenny, daughter-in-law Megan and many dear friends. For Nick, it’s his wife Barbara, his children and his community, where he taught and coached at the local high school for 39 years. “The love of my wife and family reminds me that, despite the challenges, life is good, and there are too many moments of joy to be thankful for. They remind me to do everything I can do to stay on the right track with my health and keep moving forward,” says Nick. 3. Focus on the present and make the most of everyday moments. Feeling down in the face of a chronic disease is understandable, but living in the present instead of fearing the future or dwelling on the past may help you appreciate the everyday moments that make you happy. Nick says he focuses on what he can do instead of what he can’t. He may not be able to go for runs anymore but he can still enjoy walks around a nearby lake and being outside. Ginger finds strength through time and laughter with family and friends. “I want to continue being a good mom and a good grandma. I love to laugh and I want my loved ones to know I’m happy even though I have IPF. I fight for my family. They’re my world,” she says. Learn More

Beverages to keep them hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids has long been good advice for the sick. Gather all the documents you’ll need ahead of time, including W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest statements, charitable contributions, and paperwork relating to any stocks, funds or properties you bought or sold in 2017. Get out last year’s returns, which can serve as a guide. Schedule an appointment with a tax professional or compare the do-it-yourself software you’ll need to complete your tax returns on your own. You can also find checklists online, such as the one at GreenDot. com/taxfast. 2. Find out which tax breaks apply to you. Has your living or work situation changed? The number of people you support? Did you get married or have children? Even if nothing has changed in your life, you may have missed credits in the past that you’re entitled to. For example, according to the IRS, one out of every five eligible workers fails to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. If you find out you qualify for the EITC this year and didn’t claim it in the past, you can even file amended returns for 2014, 2015 or 2016 taxes. Don’t be one of the 86 percent. Joplin’s suggestion to help ward off the problem? A properly balanced ventilation system consisting of Cobra Ridge Vent (installed at the ridge) and Cobra IntakePro (installed at the eave) by GAF (gaf.com), North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. “Both products work in tandem to allow cool, fresh air to enter at the eave edge while forcing moist, superheated air out of the ridge vent,” he explains. * Adjust door thresholds. “Sneaky” is the word Popular Mechanics magazine uses to describe this hint.
