CARTA DE BIENVENIDA

UNA GRAN PRIMAVERA

A GREAT SPRING

Spring changes the colour of everything. It reawakens a desire to live and gives everything an aura of hope. At La Revista de Sotogrande we love this season, when the resort wakes up from the winter and everything blooms again.

E

WELCOME LETTER

LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE / BIENVENIDA

T

his year, what's more, spring arrives in Sotogrande full of good news. The highlight, without JOSÉ LUIS GARCÍA IGLESIAS doubt, is the return of the best injlgarcia@grupohcp.com ternational golf to Sotogrande. With the NH Collection Open being held at the La Reserva Golf Course from 3 to 6 April, the European Tour is reunited with Sotogrande. A highly prized stage where important chapters in the history of golf in Europe have been written. It will of course be a fabulous opportunity to enjoy top-class sport in this paradise of golf. Spring also marks the beginning of the second Sotogrande Magazine Golf Tour. Just a year old, it has already become one of the most eagerly awaited events on the amateur calendar. It is something that is particularly close to our heart and we go into this second event with perhaps even more energy than last year. And naturally, the new season also means another edition of The Sotogrande Magazine. An issue, the 75th, that has had a makeover. A breath of fresh air that we want to dedicate to this wonderful spring season that pours in through the windows to fill all of Sotogrande with light. An edition full of new features that, as ever, we hope you will enjoy. Because that's our mission: to be a magazine about the 'the good life'. ■

One day I got a call to ask me if I knew about the Kitchen Nightmares programme; I said yes and the next question was whether I’d like to do it in Spain. My answer was direct and concise: YES! After that there was a strong of meetings, trial runs, castings, pilot shoots... until, almost a year later, the channel decided to take on the challenge of introducing an internationally successful prime-time format to Spain. To put the kitchen in a place where, in terms of television, it had never been before. It was a big gamble and... it went well.

If it was fiction, I’d be an actor, and I’m not, and I don’t know how to be anyone but myself. If the channel had intended that the programme’s lead was someone playing a role, they would have chosen any one of the fantastic actors we have in this country. LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE / RELOJES

RSG/78

RSG/78

The history of Breitling is inexorably linked to aviation. A specialist in technical watches, this company has shared many of the finest hours of flight in the conquest of the skies. Their legendary timepieces have been companions in battle in countless adventures. These feats in the sky have placed these timepieces on top of the aviation world.

I

n 1952, Breitling launches its legendary Navitimer wristwatch equipped with a circular slide rule, allowing the wearer to perform all kinds of air navigation-related calculations. A must-have for pilots and lovers of aeronautics, it has been continuously manufactured for almost 60 years – the oldest mechanical chronograph produced worldwide. In 1962, a Navitimer accompanies Scott Carpenter during his orbital flight aboard the spaceship Aurora 7: the first wristwatch to travel to space. During the 1950s and 1960s, Breitling participates in the expansion of commercial aviation, installing onboard chronographs on propeller planes and later jets for numerous manufacturers and airlines. The brand subsequently becomes the “official supplier to world aviation.” Today, Breitling continues creating links with the aeronautical world, regularly collaborating with the global elite of pilots. Several exceptional teams fly the firm’s colours, including the magnificent flight team the Breitling Jet Team, who participate in some of the world’s top aerial displays, such as the famous Reno

Air Races (Nevada, United States). There is no other watch brand so closely linked with the aeronautical world. Perhaps it is because of this that the leading aerobatic display teams around the world wear these singular timepieces as their partners. In Italy, the Frecce Tricolori. In the UK, the Red Arrows. In France, the Patrouille de France and in Switzerland, the Patrouille Suisse, have spent years accompanied by Breitling. The Spanish Patrulla Águila has also been loyal to Breitling instruments for 20 years. To celebrate this 20th anniversary, Breitling has created a new Navitimer watch dedicated to this team. A new version inspired by the Navitimer 01, an iconic watch and the most legendary chronograph of all time. Among its many special features, of particular note is the contrast between the black of its new watch face with its applied numerals and the red and silver of the plane used by the team in all its aerial displays around the world, the CASA C-101, commonly known as “Mirlo.”

When in position “0”, the red minute, second and hour hands align to form a perfect figure, just like the precise formations of the Patrulla Águila in their displays. The back is engraved with one of the Patrulla Águila’s most elegant formations, one which requires the utmost concentration and skill on the part of the pilots: the “looping in poker”. The engraving is an original reproduction of this formation, perfectly performed by the Patrulla Águila. The interior houses its prestigious unique calibre, the “Calibre 01”. A high performance mechanism which, both in its innovative method of production and patents, has once again revolutionised the world of the chronograph. Certified by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute), the mechanism features a 72 hour power reserve, column wheel and a vertical clutch. An exceptional piece, of which only 50 have been produced. Without a doubt, it is a new delight for lovers of fine watchmaking. A watch that reaches the sky.n

LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE / PITITA RIDRUEJO

RSG/78

Siempre he tenido esa espinita clavada, me hubiera encantado.

WHAT WAS PITITA LIKE AS A GIRL? [Smiles] I was born in Soria, on my grandparents’ estate. There was no doctor at the birth because I was in such a hurry to get into the world. Thanks to God everything turned out well. My parents were always very close and caring, although my father could sometimes be a very serious man. [Continues] I was the oldest of three children, the only girl. I went to school at the Colegio de la Asunción, I was a diligent student and I remember the nuns with great affection. All I can tell you is that I was a happy girl and I have wonderful memories of my childhood.

AND AS A TEENAGER? Well, I wanted to continue my studies, especially in philosophy and literature, but my father said no - he said that university was only for boys! That’s always been something at the back of my mind - I would have loved it. [Tries to smile] [Changes the subject] I also went to parties and events with my friends and had a wonderful time.

someone like me from Soria. [Laughs] Those were wonderful years, and the people of the Philippines are lovely. Later we spent some time in Spain, until Mike was offered a job as a stockbroker in Rome. We lived there for six years, until the president of the Philippines offered Mike the chance to be an ambassador for his country...

[INTERRUPTS] AND

WHAT

ARE

YOUR MEMORIES OF THAT PERIOD OF YOUR LIFE?

[Face lights up] I was thrilled for us to become ambassadors, because it gives you a wonderful life, and anyone who claims that being an ambassador is a bore is lying. Wherever you go you’re treated incredibly well, you have the opportunity to meet incredibly interesting people, and what’s more, it’s an honour to be able to represent the president of a country in another state. Being in Rome, the president of the Philippines offered Mike the chance to be an ambas-

WOULD

[Without hesitation] In “embassy life” there are certain things that get put at risk. Today I wouldn’t be prepared to pay that price. I couldn’t leave my six grandchildren - they’re angels. [Sighs and smiles]

[Laughs] Maybe someone, but those are the most important. [Pauses, then continues] In any case, it’s a bit embarrassing, because it sounds like I’m blowing my own trumpet.

WHERE SHALL WE START? [Without hesitation] Mother Teresa. It was an honour to meet with her and speak to her. Among all the people I’ve met in my life, she is

“THE WORLD

is worse than ever; I´M SCARED”

SINCE

THEN, GIVEN THE PERSPEC -

TIVE YOU GAIN WITH TIME, HOW HAS THE WORLD CHANGED ?

[Sits up in her chair] Ha, the world! The world is worse than ever. I’m scared, I think that something has to happen because the situation right now is untenable.

THIS WONDERFUL HOUSE HAS MANY

SOUVENIRS OF EXOTIC JOURNEYS , YOU HAVE A VERY EXOTIC SORT OF BEAUTY : SPEAKING OF EXOTIC THINGS, WHO IS

MIKE STILIANOPOULOUS?

[Laughs} Well, he’s my husband. A friend of mine told me about a Philippino boy who had recently arrived in Madrid. She told me that he was wonderful and that he was throwing a party. I went with her and we got to know each other. We got on very well, and started a friendship that ended in a wedding. Mike is a very intelligent person, a polyglot, and very skilled, as he has demonstrated.

WHAT HAS YOUR MARRIAGE BEEN LIKE? We got married in Madrid, and all of Mike’s family came to the wedding. Newly married, we went to live in the Philippines, which as everyone knows is horribly hot, especially for

sador for his country. I think that in addition to his training, the fact that Mike spoke so many languages was played a big part in making them think of him for the job. After offering us various embassies, we chose Spain, and lived here as ambassadors for six or seven years. Meanwhile Mike was also sent to the embassies of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The poor thing had so much work. Then we moved to London, also as ambassadors. That period ended in 83, when we moved permanently back to Madrid.

Mother Teresa. Among all the people I’ve met in my life, she is the one who’s left the biggest impression on me.

the one who’s left the biggest impression on me. [Falls silent and looks into the distance]

ANDY WARHOL? [Smiles again] I met him in New York, at Studio 54. We had friends in common, and during a dinner I got the chance to chat with him and tell him that I also painted. We really connected, and we agreed that I’d show him my paintings when he visited Spain. A while later, the editor of Time Magazine told me that Andy was coming to Madrid, but had said he wasn’t giving any interviews. When I said that I knew him, he sent me on a mission to interview him. I took advantage of the fact that a friend of mine had met up with Andy for lunch, and I joined them. He remembered me and was surprised to see me. He asked me what I was doing there, so I told him that I was a journalist now and wanted to interview him. [Roars with laughter] We spent the next day in his hotel, the Villamagna, and there, sitting on the floor of his suite, I interviewed him. It was the most surreal interview you could possibly imagine. He told me, for example, that what he really wanted to be was a runway model, that he wore the white wig so that people would respect him, PITITA RIDRUEJO / LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE

AND

NI?

WHAT HAPPENED WITH

FELLI-

[Sits up as if to gather momentum] Well, it’s because of Fellini that I got upset with my family. They didn’t let me devote myself to the cinema. You see, this all came about because one day I went with a friend to the Cinecittà film studio to watch them film a movie. I met Fellini there and he told me he wanted to see me again, that I should come back the next day. I thought he wasn’t telling the truth and I didn’t return, but I received a call from an assistant of his telling me that Fellini was waiting for me and warned me that he was angry. So I went there as fast as possible, and after getting through make up, hair and wardrobe I was taken to him. He asked me

54

LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE / PITITA RIDRUEJO

to play a very angry woman, one that was shouting and breaking things. It must have been good, because he told me that I was “wilder than María Callas”, and that’s saying something. I have a beautiful costume that he gave me, which had won an Oscar for best costume design. It was from the film Romeo and Juliet. I still have it today.

WHAT’S

IT LIKE TO SPEND THE WEE-

KEND WITH THE

QUEEN OF ENGLAND?

[Laughs] Well, Queen Elizabeth, Mike and I had met before we’d become ambassadors for the Philippines in England, when we were invited by the Maharani of Jaipur, and her husband the Maharaja, to their house in Ascot. One day we were told that the queen, her husband and her son Charles were going to have tea at the house, and that was where we met. The queen and her family were all lovely, and we got on very well, so much so that they invited us to their royal box to watch the horse racing.Later, when we were presented at Kensington Palace as the new ambassadors from the Philippines to England, we found out that she remembered us, and from then on our relationship became more friendly. She invited us to everything, even, as you said, to spend a long weekend with them, about four or five days, in Windsor. We were their only guests, apart from during one dinner in which the Queen took the initiative of inviting the minister for education, so that he could help me choose a school for my children.

YOU’RE

UNDOUBTEDLY A VERY ELE-

GANT WOMAN, BUT WHAT DOES ELEGAN-

CE MEAN TO YOU? WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?

You’re very kind to say that to me, but I’m not sure how to answer that. [Pauses then continues] Elegance means to be liked by people, to be loved, to have value and warmth, to be kind. It’s what’s inside that counts - it has nothing to do with your physical appearance or the clothes you wear.

WHAT

ROLE DOES FAITH PLAY IN

YOUR LIFE?

It’s enormously important, it means everything to me. I’ve written eleven books about the Virgin Mary, I give conferences throughout Spain... [With a serious expression] I think that the dreadful wars that people throughout the world are suffering through would cease to exist if we obeyed the Lord’s 10 Commandments and loved our neighbour as we do ourselves. There would be no wars or abortions if we truly loved one another. It truly pains me that people do not have faith, because miracles do exist, and I know that because I’ve been studying them since 1984.

WHAT

DOES

YOU?

SOTOGRANDE

f there’s one thing Paris has got, it’s monuments. None of them, however, can overshadow the “Iron Lady” of Paris, built in 1889 for the famous World’s Fair. The seven million visits per year can attest to the attraction of this monument, which turns 125 years old in 2014. An anniversary that would greatly surprise its creator, Gustave Eiffel. The fact was that, at the time, many did not appreciate the idea of a three hundred-metre tall wrought iron tower, least of all artists, who even formed a committee for its immediate dismantling. In the end, the tower as it could be useful for radio transmissions, and it gradually became an enduring part of the city of love. Today the Eiffel Tower is the favourite child of Paris. We allow ourselves to be seduced by it and draw out our itinerary looking down from its viewpoint; ascending, step by step, into the sky of Paris. It doesn’t matter which direction you look in - everything seems straight out of a picture postcard. There’s so much to see that

we have to settle for beholding it all from above. Coming back down to earth, we organise a brief tour. We don’t have much time, so we have to choose our stops wisely. We begin at the famous gothic cathedral of Notre Dame; with its two huge towers, its gargoyles and its bell tower in which lived the mythical Hunchback of Notre Dame. We continue our journey to the Panthéon, with its impressive and enormous interior and its crypt, the final resting place for the likes of Voltaire and Marie Curie, among others. Absolutely worth setting aside a few hours for the visit.

The Jerte Valley is also known as El Valle del Agua (‘The Valley of Water’) due to its many watercourses. In addition to the River Jerte, from which the valley takes its name and which provides all the plant and animal life of the area with water, there are also the remarkable ravines of San Martín, Becedas, Papúos, Los Infiernos, Buitres, Honduras, Puria and

It is worth setting aside some time to visit a few of them. The first to welcome us is Tornavacas, with its famous street Calle Real, divided into three sections by two bridges, and its medieval

Any of the eleven municipalities are perfect as somewhere to stop and rest, stay the night and sample the delicious cuisine of these lands. Don’t forget to order some revolcás potatoes, the caldereta de cabrito (goat stew) or the canas soup.

Towards Plasencia we come across Valdastillas, with its steep slopes and terraces populated with cherry trees; Piornal, where the famous Bonal Ravine is located; Casas del Castañar, Barrado, El Torno and Rebollar, with its “Casas del Canchal”, houses which, located on impressive granite rocks, seem to defy the laws of gravity.

And, to round off this immersion in nature, there could be nothing better than saying farewell to the place by doing some of the many outdoor activities on offer in the area. From canyoning to caving or canoeing. We went for paragliding: the Jerte Valley with a bird’s eye view.■

ASTON DB5 Al servicio de ‘Su Majestad’

TexTo: Lucas MonTojo

ASTON DB5 On Her Majesty’s Service

Machine guns in the front bumper, bulletproof windows, revolving number places, and ejector seats like a fighter jet... These and other improvements were made to the car that James Bond, played by the actor Sean Connery, drove in Goldfinger. An Italian Ferrari, perhaps? Or an American Cadillac? What an affront to her Majesty the Queen! Bond, James Bond, could only take the wheel of a real British treasure: an Aston Martin.

W

hen they began shooting the film, Aston Martin already had an impressive model, the DB4, but the DB5 was about to be launched and the brand decided to give a prototype to the producer of the film to delight the world’s most famous secret agent, and in turn to give it incredible promotion around the globe. With a six-cylinder engine and over 280 horsepower propelling this speedster more than 225 km/h, this car doesn’t just dazzle the experts. Millionaires across Europe found a way of life in the DB4 and DB5 models, a cult

object of speed and racing - one not without its risks. Perhaps they were influenced by the Bond lifestyle? Joking aside, the origins of the brand, its name, and even the initial DB, are curious. Let us go back to the year 1913. There in Kensington, London, young racing car fan Lionel Martin founded, together with Robert Bamford, a small car workshop. This was no ordinary mechanical repair shop, but one specialising in the preparation of racing cars. Lionel and Robert used the chassis of an Isotta-Fraschini put in a four-cylinder 1400cc Coventry Simplex engine, and off they went. Driven by Lionel Martin himself, the car came

first in the Aston Clinton race held in Buckinghamshire. From this perfect meeting of man and machine comes the name Aston Martin. And this was just the beginning of a string of successes that made the Aston Martin one of the most desirable vehicles in the world. A century has passed since Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford founded the brand, but their objectives and their philosophy have remained the same. And not just on the big screen.n

Claudia José Regueira Ramos - Official Chronicler of Jimena

A VISIT TO BAELO CLAUDIA

In a few days fifty or so people belonging to the Institute of El Bierzo Studies will visit the Baelo Claudia Archaeological Site. This

scientific association, similar to our Institute of Campo de Gibraltar Studies, has been conducting some brilliant and intensive re-

search, publishing and disseminatory work in various cultural fields related to the comarca of El Bierzo in the province of León. Because of my close relationship with that region for family and emotional reasons, they have asked me to act as guide on this visit to the Roman site of Bolonia, an invitation I accepted with great pleasure. Myself and my wife Keti Mauriz, a true berciana, will undertake this task as occasional cicerones with great interest.

T

his visit to the ichthyo-archaeological site takes place as the fishermen put out the four trap nets in the Straits area, which are the only ones currently used in Spain. They are in Conil, Barbate, Tarifa and Zahara. This method of fishing is the same that was used in Baelo Claudia from the second century BC to the third century AD. Baelo is known as the most exhaustive witness to the antiquity and importance of the fishing of migratory fish on the Straits of Gibraltar, which has been practised since Phoenician times. What is unique about Baelo is that in around 13 hectares it has practically every representative element of a Roman city, even though it barely exceeded a thousand inhabitant. On a small scale all of the typical elements of Roman cities can be seen: the forum, the capitol, the baths, the theatre, the market and the basilica. It also has the typical perpendicular layout of Roman streets: the decumanus (E-W) and the cardus (N-S). In addition to the important industrial area consisting of basins and enclosure used for salting the tuna and preparing the garum, a highly prized condiment in the Roman Empire. There has been a curious link throughout history between the trap-net fishing sites of the Straits and the province of León and specifically with the comarca of Bierzo. In 1294 Sancho IV granted Leonese noble Guzmán el Bueno the privilege of the trap-net sites for his heroic defence of the town of Tarifa, recently reclaimed from the Moors. This tuna-fishing monopoly extended along the Andalusian coast

that had been reconquered at the time, namely from Ayamonte to Gibraltar. And as for time, the bestowal was perpetual for Guzmán and his descendants. Following the Guzmán lineage it was granted in 1445 to the Dukedom of Medina Sidonia, who remained in possession of the tuna-fishing monopoly until the seizures of the nineteenth century.

What is unique about Baelo is that in around 13 hectares it has practically every representative element of a Roman city, even though it barely exceeded a thousand inhabitant.

In the eighteenth century the ducal trap-net sites went through a crisis due to the drastic fall in the number migratory tuna off our coasts. To find out what caused this decline and to find potential solutions, Pedro de Alcántara Guzmán, 14th Duke of Medina Sidonia, did not turn to an expert trap-net fisherman or an authority on our coasts. Instead he went to a Benedictine scholar, Martín Sarmiento, born in Villafranca del Bierzo though from a Galician family and brought up in Galicia. The duke was well aware of the extraordinary learning of this monk, who he visited daily in his

cell at the San Martín Monastery in Madrid, so that he knew his devotion to studying the vast collection of works he had in his call and in the monastery library. The result was the most complete report known to date on the biology of tuna, their migratory habits and a whole range of observations on the cause for their decline, along with a number of recommendations for replenishing stocks. It also included the first known statistics in the world on tuna fishing. The importance of this report is recognised by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission at its base in La Jolla (California), giving a preferential place to the effigy of Martín Sarmiento, with a commemoration of this historic document. The close relationship for many years between the 14th Duke of Medina Sidonia and Martín Sarmiento was described precisely by a researcher from El Bierzo, José Santos Puerto, through the publication of the extensive correspondence between the two men. This book was published by the Institute of El Bierzo Studies. It also so happens that Pedro de Alcántara was the last Duke of Medina Sidonia who was a member of the Guzmán family, because following his death in 1779 the title passed to the Álvarez de Toledo lineage. This meant the coming together in a single family of the titles of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and the Marquises of Villafranca del Bierzo. And today in the extraordinary archive of the ducal palace in Sanlúcar the legacies of the history of the trapnet sites on the Straits and the Marquisate of Villafranca del Bierzo coexist.■ HISTORIA / LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE

SHIRLEY TEMPLE Emerging in the midst of the American Depression, she unquestionably outshone all the child actors of her generation. With few resources, her extraordinary success could only be explained by her amazing screen presence and the dizzying escapism with which cinema helped to keep up the public spirit during those dark years. However, she was unable to mature, cinematically speaking, along with her contemporaries.

A

t the age of just three years old, she was discovered at a dance school and signed to appear in a series of shorts entitled Baby Burlesks, together with other child actors. The young Californian was then taken by her mother to the major studios, and the great opportunities that awaited her there. After bit parts in various feature films, her break out role was at the age of 7, when she sang ‘Baby, take a bow’ in the film Stand Up and Cheer!. She was so well received that Fox, the production company that had hired her, began to search for a launch vehicle for their new child star. Paramount then asked for her on loan for two productions, Little Miss Marker and Now and Forever, the massive success of both propelling forward Shirley’s meteoric career: all the elements of her success were now lined up. The secret of such overwhelming success, in addition to her prodigious screen presence and the acting talent she displayed in rather stupid and contrived plotlines, can be found in her peculiar aspect as an animated automaton, a pet who has come alive and started singing. She left such an impression on the man who discovered her, Jay Gorney, that he said, “I have never in my life seen such an aggressively artificial little girl... Made up and curled like a little lamb, looking like a rag doll. Her extreme fragility played in her favour, the miracle worked, and the camera loved her...”

THE YOUNGEST STAR IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA, OSCAR WINNER AT JUST SIX YEARS OLD, RETIRED AS A MULTIMILLIONAIRE AT 12, MARRIED AT 16, A MOTHER AT 19 AND DIVORCED AT 21, SHE ALSO DEVELOPED A PROLIFIC POLITICAL CAREER Treated like a star, Fox gave her a pony, a tenroom bungalow and a private tutor, as well as increasing her salary considerably. In 1934 she moved on from supporting roles to triumph as the star of Bright Eyes, whose success propelled her to the list of the seven highest grossing actors of her time. To top it all off, the Academy Awards presented her with a miniature Oscar...

The Blue Bird and Young People, rehashes of themes and musical numbers from her previous films. At this point, her mother announced that the great star would retire to concentrate on her studies, when in reality, they terminated her contract with Fox, intending for a change of scenery and to thoroughly prepare Shirley for her comeback as a teen star. It was MGM who rescued her, with a much lower salary, only to first reject her for a role in Babes on Broadway and then put her in a musical that became a complete failure. Times had changed, and Shirley refused to accept it. The indifference of the public to her new image as a young woman cleared up any doubts. Shirley Temple was no longer of any interest - she was simply an old relic of another era. For the next four years, Shirley Temple became the queen of the box office. In 1935 she appeared in four hugely successful films: The Little Colonel, The Littlest Rebel, Our Little Girl and Curly Top, two of these together with famed tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. In 1936 she filmed another four: Captain January, Poor Little Rich Girl, Dimples and Stowaway. In her third year at the top, she worked under the great director John Ford in Wee Willie Winkie. Meanwhile, a great shadow soon fell on her career. Shirley was desperate to star in the major production of the moment, The Wizard of Oz, the rights to which were owned by Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Fox, indulgent of their little star, arrived at an agreement with MGM, agreeing to hand over the couple Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. But the deal fell apart as a result of the tragic death of actress Jean Harlow in a plane crash. To avoid hurt feelings they offered her another famous children’s book, Heidi, bring another stage in her glittering career to a close with a flourish. Following other musical films, in 1939 the studio honoured her with an expensive colour film, The Little Princess. Ironically, despite the fact that it may be her best film, it was eclipsed by the tremendous success of The Wizard of Oz and the presence of a new, emerging star named Judy Garland. The decline in her lure soon became evident. The first great failure came about in 1940 with

Even so, the star kept trying throughout the 1940s, this time under the wing of producer David O. Selznick who signed her with the idea of turning her into a teen star. However, despite filming a number of good movies, she was unable to get off the ground. The youngest star in the history of cinema, Oscar winner at just six years old, retired as a multimillionaire at 12, married at 16, a mother at 19 and divorced at 21, she also developed a prolific political career. At 39 she was nominated as a congressional candidate by the Governor of California, her former co-star Ronald Reagan. At 42, she represented her country at the United Nations and later served as Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. Temple also served on the board of several major companies, such as The Walt Disney Company, Del Monte, Bancal Tri-State and Fireman’s Fund Insurance. She was also appointed to the boards of various non-profit organisations, including the Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Council of American Ambassadors, the World Affairs Council, the United States Commission for Unesco, the National Committee on US-China Relations, the United Nations Association and the US Citizens Space Task Force. She held honorary doctorates from the University of Santa Clara and Lehigh University, was a fellow of the College of Notre Dame and held a Chubb Fellowship at Yale University.■

EN LA ORILLA

ON THE SHORE

Heir to the highest tradition of realism, the style of On the Shore sustains itself with its straightforward language and obsessive tone which ensnares from the very first line, turning the reader into an accomplice. The variety of resources (monologues, third person narration, and dialogue) allows for the opening of the novel’s scope to other situations and characters. The follow up to Crematorium, the previous novel from this author, which was awarded the Critics’ Prize among other honours, and considered to be “one of the best Spanish novels of this century so far” (Ángel Basanta, El Cultural), On the Shore is a magnificent and formidable masterpiece, in every way unforgettable.■

With this new measure, the designation of ‘recebo’ (intense feeding) disappears, simplifying the system with three options: bellota (acorn-fed), cebo de campo (outdoor-bred fattened) and cebo (fattened). In all cases these new labels will be attached at the slaughterhouse and accompany the product at all times, also indicating the percentage of Ibérico breed, which must always exceed fifty percent. Cocina marinera y arroces.

• Calamares. • Rape. • Gambas rojas del Mediterráneo. • Tomates. • Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra. • 1 ñora. • Pimentón dulce molido. • Perejil.

A student of the great José Luis Chaparro, Otaolaurruchi is sure to make food lovers very happy with more than thirty rice dishes made from scratch, using high quality base ingredients, a fine-tuned technique and the personal touch that always characterises a master chef. Seasonal rice dishes, stews, dry paellas…. the options are as varied as they are delicious. It is an excellent selection and it is topped off perfectly with some wonderful seafood from Sanlúcar. Langoustines, tuna, seasoned with sherry vinegar…It is impossible to explain with words; it must be tasted. And of course, don’t forget to set it off with a good bottle of wine; something on which El Molino del Conde are experts. ■

Put the olive oil in a paella dish and allow it to heat up, then add the squid and wait for them to turn golden brown over a medium heat. Add the salmorreta and the rice. Sauté the mixture to allow the rice to acquire the flavours of the sauce, and then add the fumet. Leave to simmer over a medium heat, and when the last of the liquid is beginning to evaporate, add the shrimp. Leave the rice to cook over a low heat until it dries out. Allow it to sit for a couple of minutes, then serve and enjoy.

There are pleasures that go beyond the senses. Sampling the Grande Cuvée Alexandra Rosé Millésimé 2004 is, without doubt, one of them. A rosé that contains all the passion of La Maison Laurent-Perrier. A champagne with a woman’s name of which only seven vintages have been produced in 26 years. An exceptional rarity that raises this Bernard de Nonancourt to the top, making every bottle a treasure that Bodegas Marqués de Riscal is responsible for safeguarding in Spain.

S

pring brings us a wonderful morning in Sotogrande. We were very lucky with the weather on one of the most extraordinary tastings we have enjoyed to date: the Laurent-Perrier Alexandra Rosé Millésimé 2004. The history of this champagne is fascinating. In 1982, Bernard de Nonancourt decided to bottle all the essence of Laurent-Perrier in a great Cuvée Rosé, taking advantage of the arrival, that autumn, of an exceptional vintage. It was a harvest that had all the qualities needed to create a great wine, which they bottled and allowed to mature for years in limestone cellars inTours-sur-Marne. In 1987 this rosé reached its peak. Just the same year Nonancourt’s eldest daughter, Alexandra, married. The event was decisive in naming this champagne after the heiress of the house. Something that made this rosé unique. Since then, only sublime vintages have been worthy of a great Alexandra Rosé. Extraordinary harvests, like in 2004. An exceptional vintage that deserved the carry the badge of Alexandra and which we are now ready to taste, to discover, to unveil. A rosé champagne whose main characteristic is combination of two types of grape macerated together: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is something quite unusual that only happens if the grapes reach full maturity at the same time. A process that brings out the purest fruity aromas. We began to unveil her secrets as we admired the band of froth set on the circumference of the glass, where a fine and persistent bubble emerges and makes way for an amber-pink layer, suggesting a wine of generous character. The bouquet of red fruit, plum, wild strawberry or white peach is very open and yields a seductive and refreshing sensation that invites you to taste the wine. In the mouth it has a firm and fleshy texture, gradually revealing a more creamy character. The contrast between vinosity and finesse appears immediately and

is prolonged with a great sense of purity. We boldly decipher the wide range of flavours that follow. Mild spices, metallic nuances, dried roses... the complexity is indisputable, a feast for the senses. A champagne with these properties should be kept to accompany the most exceptional dishes. The garden of the villa where we tasted it became a great banquet hall. Crab in a delicate jelly, scallops with saffron, or a delicately spicy blue lobster were some of the dishes presented to us. Exquisite creations that brought out all the fine qualities of this great champagne that delivers a feast of sensations.■

GOLF NEWS RSG/78

GOLF NEWS ALEJANDRO CAÑIZARES WINS HASSAN II GOLF TROPHY IN MOROCCO Alejandro Cañizares was victorious in the Hassan II Golf Trophy in Morocco, held on the Royal Palace of Agadir course, securing the fourth Spanish victory of the season and the second by a player from Malaga on the European Tour, taking the Spanish tally to 171 victories. Alejandro has had to wait seven years (Imperial Collection Russian Open 2006) to win his second title and he did it in style: leading from start to finish. He won with a five-stroke lead over the Englishman Andy Sullivan with rounds of 62-68-69-70=269, 19 under par, and move into 15th place in the Race to Dubai. ●

CHARITY BIRDIES

The golfer Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will donate a hundred euros for every birdie he hits in the Spanish Open (from 15 to 18 May, Girona). A commendable gesture that confirms the great personal qualities of this champion, who The Sotogrande Magazine had the good fortune of interviewing a couple of seasons ago.

Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño is urging other players taking part in the Spanish Open, whether Spanish or foreign, to join an initiative that aims to help make the dreams of children aged 3 to 18 with serious illnesses come true.

The Spanish women’s team, made up of Luna Sobrón, Natalia Escuriola and Ainhoa Olarra, were unable to hold on to the first place they reached at the end of the third round and they finished second with 598 strokes, three behind France.

The funds that are raised for this cause will go to the Make-A-Wish Spain foundation, a non-profit organisation that helps children find the hope, happiness and strength needed to overcome illness through various activities in which the children commit to doing some tasks that help to show them that, through hard work and effort, anything is possible, transforming fear, pain and uncertainty into strength, hope and happiness to overcome adversity. ●

Natalia Escuriola’s 75 strokes and Ainhoa Olarra’s 78 were not enough to retain the top spot. In the women’s individual category Natalia Escuriola was fourth, the best result among the Spanish women in a leaderboard that also featured Luna Sobrón, in sixth, and María Parra, seventh in a tournament dominated by the Danish player Nanna Madsen, who also excelled in the recent S. M. La Reina. Cup.

SPANISH WOMEN RUNNERS-UP IN THE EUROPEAN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

In the men’s competition, Mario Galiano took the limelight among the Spaniards, second behind the Italian Guido Migliozzi. The Spaniard, who was the leader at the end of the third day, finished three stokes behind the Italian.

The Spanish women’s team finished second in the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande Cup, the European Nations Championship. In the men’s competition, Spain finished seventh, while in the individual category Mario Galiano was second and Natalia Escuriola was fourth.

In the men’s team competition, Spain finished in seventh place, some way behind Scotland and Italy who took the top spots despite the combined efforts of Mario Galiano, Alejandro Larrazábal and Iván Cantero. ●
