In late August 1997, Daniel īaīre set o for the 500-foot Kapaloa Falls in the īack of Pololu Valleī on the rugged north shore of the īig Island. The 25-īear-old wanted photos of his ācathedralā to take with him īack to college on the mainland. īut that all changed in an instant when he fell o the trail, plummeting hundreds of feet onto a rockī ledge near the falls. He was līing there motionless when a rescue team from the Hawaii Countī Fire Department joined his parents in the search.
