A Message from Pastor Allen Sisters and Brothers in Christ: I want to thank so many of you for engaging with Bret, Donald, and me as we lean into the Finding Freedom in Jesus sermon series. Our starting point was the new book Finding Freedom in Jesus by J.P. Foster and Matt Williams. In July we spent time reminding ourselves that we were created in the image of God. This means we were created with the ability to change or transform our lives; created to be both loved and known by name by God and each other; created in God's image, which leaves no room for shame; and finally created to take in the beauty of God's creation and recognize God's beauty in ourselves and our neighbor. In August, we began to unpack how Jesus is working to restore this image by being rescued from the world's danger, redeemed from the slavery of sin and death, made righteous before our God, and therefore reconciled to both God and neighbor. All this is possible only through the grace of God made known in Jesus. We cannot navigate this journey without the Spirit's power. With the new school year upon us we will invite us to confidently live our lives as blessed, victorious, hopeful, and empowered persons. This threefold shift from being created in God's image, through restoration by the grace made known in Jesus, and living confidently in the Spirit is another way of talking about our core Wesleyan doctrines. When pushed by a detractor, John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, stated our core doctrines this way: [We] labour to convince all mankind, that to be a real Christian, is, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, and to serve him with all our strength; to love our neighbour as ourselves; and therefore do unto every man as we would he should do unto us. Nay, you say, “Had you confined yourselves to these great points, there would have been no objection against your doctrine. But the doctrines you have distinguished yourselves by, are not the love of God and man, but many false and pernicious errors.” I have again and again, with all the plainness I could, declared what our constant doctrines are; whereby we are distinguished only from Heathens, or nominal Christians; not from any that worship God in spirit and in truth. Our main doctrines, which include all the rest, are three,—that of repentance, of faith, and of holiness. The first of these we account, as it were, the porch of religion; the next, the door; the third, religion itself.

The porch, the door, and the house are Wesley's metaphors for three modes of God's grace. Prevenient, or preventing, grace is how God constantly reaches out to make us aware of who we were created to be. When we come to recognize this, we step onto the porch of repentance and recognize the ways we are not living our intended Godlife. We offer our excellent excuses for falling short of God's glory, and God responds with justifying grace, or justification, which sets us free. This freedom invites us to step through the door of faith into the new life inside. As we compare our lives to what God intends for us, we seek to change our habits and practices. We discover that our willpower is limited and must rely on God's sanctifying grace, or sanctification, to live well in the house of holiness (religion itself). These forms of grace prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying grace - are found in these few verses from the letter to the church in Ephesus: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life (Ephesians 2:8-10). Here Paul reminds us that our salvation is not of our own doing (justification), that we are created in Christ (prevenient grace), and that we then do the good work God prepared for each one of us (sanctification), We hope our preaching is inviting you into a deeper recognition of who you are in Christ and that you will freely live into a generous life that offers a winsome welcome to all we meet. HUMC Names New Director of Youth Ministries Welcome Madi Russell Over the past several months, our Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) has worked diligently to find the right leader for our youth. We sought someone with the experience, joy, and vision to vibrantly grow our youth ministry while helping our young people deepen their relationship with the Lord. We are thrilled to announce that we have found those exact qualities in Madi Russell! Read a message from Madi below, and please join us in giving her and her family a warm Haymount UMC welcome. Hey Haymount UMC! My name is Madi Russell and I am so excited to be joining your church family as the Director of Youth Ministries! I come from a background in nonprofit administration and camping ministry, serving seven years at Camp Rockfish. Outside of church, you will find me reading, enjoying a nice cup of iced coffee, getting creative, and playing with my son, Harrison, and dog, Annie. My husband, Aaron, and I can’t wait to get to know everyone at Haymount UMC!
Book Study with Pastor Allen Returns

Beginning on September 16, Pastor Allen will be resuming his Wednesday Book Study! Classes are free and open to all, and will take place both at 10AM or 6:30 PM on Wednesdays. To register to attend this class, you can visit our website, or call our Church Office! Pastor Allen will be studying The Moral Teaching of Jesus by David Gushee. Books will be available for purchase through our office as well, but doing so is not necessary. The Moral Teachings of Jesus: Radical Instruction in the Will of God, by David P. Gushee, is a book exploring Jesus' ethics for modern life, distilling his radical commands on justice, love, humility, and service into 40 accessible chapters, challenging cultural accommodation and offering a counter-narrative to divisive Christianity by focusing on core gospel teachings for a more transformative faith, relevant for those leaving traditional church structures.

Parents of College Students: Our Higer Education Team ministers to current college students from HUMC, with the objective of offering support, love, and continual connection with their church family. We send occasional texts to our students to share devotionals, inspiration, and well wishes. We send care packages three times a year to include scriptural greeting cards, gift cards and miscellaneous gifts. Lacing Up for Year Two:
HUMC Men’s Basketball Returns September 13 Get ready to hit the court—the Haymount United Methodist Church Men’s Basketball Ministry is tipping off its second season this fall! What started last year as a small gathering of just 12 guys has quickly become one of our fastest-growing ministries, doubling in size as more men step onto the court. Starting Sunday, September 13th, the group will meet weekly at 3:00 PM at Montclair Elementary School. Whether you have a polished jump shot or haven't played since middle school, all skill levels are welcome! This group is about far more than just points on the scoreboard. It’s an avenue for building genuine brotherhood within our congregation and connecting with the broader Fayetteville community. Plus, the fun isn't limited to the players—families regularly come along to hang out, relax, and enjoy peaceful Sunday afternoons at the park while the games are underway. FALL WITH HUMC KIDS! TRUNK OR TREAT Mark your calendars and clear your schedules! Join us for our annual Trunk or Treat on October 25 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in the back parking lot. This free, family-friendly event is open to the entire community, so bring the kids, dress up in your favorite costumes, and get ready for a fun-filled afternoon of trick-or-treating, creative car trunks, and plenty of sweet treats. We can't wait to see you and celebrate together!
We need your help! Join us for this year’s Trunk or Treat! We need volunteers to make this event a success for our community, and there are several ways you can get involved. You can host a trunk by decorating your vehicle and handing out treats—just email your trunk theme to Rachel Madsen to reserve your spot. We also need volunteers to help with event setup, teardown, and staffing the HUMC booths throughout the evening. Please sign up or email Rachel with your trunk theme by October 11. If you can't volunteer that evening but still want to help, we are accepting donations of nut-free and peanut butter-free individually packaged candy. You can drop off candy donations in the collection boxes located in the NLC or right outside Rachel's office. Thank you for helping us serve our church family and neighbors!
4:12 Tweens New Fall Schedule Beginning in September, our 4:12 Tweens will no longer be meeting on Wednesday evenings. This year our group will be meeting from 5PM-6PM on Sunday evenings! After our meeting, our 3rd-5th grade students are encouraged to join us for Sunday Evening Dinner. This meal will be free and enjoyed with our middle and high school students! Thank you for making Rally Day a special morning for all of our students and youth! We are excited to embark on this new season with them! Holiday Garage Sale
Save The Date!
Our Holiday Garage Sale will take place October 16 & 17! During this sale, we have a large selection of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations! We invite you to go through your various Holiday decorations and bring your donations to our church office during normal business hours. This sale is not exclusively holiday decor! It will also feature our usual selection of preowned home goods and furniture! This garage sale will go to benefit two local organizations supported by HUMC missions. Zoe Mission Trip Presentation

If you are interested in learning more about the work our Kenya Mission team did this summer, as well as ways that HUMC is currently involved in ZOE, and ways you can get involved moving forward! C.R.E.S.P School Supplies Drive Cumberland Road Elementary School Supplies Drive Haymount United Methodist Church is collecting the following items for Cumberland Road Elementary School to ensure that the students, teachers, and staff at the school have what they need to have a successful school year: Pencil Cases, Kids Size New Socks, Backpacks, Hardback Composition Books (not spiral), Pocket Folders, Glue Sticks, Dry Erase Markers, Hand Sanitizer, Pencils, Looseleaf Notebook Paper, Stretchy waist Pants or Leggings for all grades, Underwear (children’s sizes 4-6) and tissues. You can place your donations in the designated bin outside of the Church Office! Donations will be accepted through the month of September. In addition to collecting school supplies, Haymount United Methodist Church also volunteers at the school. Music Ministry News Robert Mobsby & Robin Lynne Frye

Music For A Great Space opens it’s season with Music Made for Two, featuring mezzo-soprano Robin Lynne Frye and baritone Robert Mobsby, a husband and wife singing duo. With selections ranging from Mozart, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Handel and Schumann to Bernstein, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Berlin and Gershwin, their concerts include something for everyone. Mobsby has appeared in numerous performances as an oratorio, concert, and opera soloist and Frye has received widespread critical acclaim for being “vocally and musically…a most impressive singer” in oratorio, chamber music, recital and opera. Frye and Mobsby will be accompanied by pianist Anastasia Bryant, who has won several national competitions, and has performed as a soloist throughout Russia, Dubai, Kuwait, Austria, Germany and the US. Admission this concert is free and open to all. A free-will offering will be accepted to support the Music For A Great Space Concert Series.
Nosferatu with Organist Dorothy Papadokos

HUMC welcomes renowned organist Dorothy Papadakos accompanying the 1922 silent film classic, Nosferatu. Set in 1838 in the fictional German town of Wisborg, the story follows Thomas Hutter, who is sent to Transylvania to meet Count Orlok, a mysterious client planning to buy a house near Hutter’s residence. Hutter discovers Orlok’s unusual nature and flees, while Orlok travels to Wisborg. Ultimately, it is Ellen Hutter who pays the sacrifice to save the town. The film is known for its expressionist style including elongated shadows, distorted lighting, and eerie camera angles. Dorothy Papadakos is a member of the six-time Grammy Award winning Paul Winter Consort and served as organist at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine from 1990 until 2003.

Reconnecting our Community
The Story Behind HUMC’s Fellowhsip Lunch When the pandemic hit in 2020, our church family experienced a sudden, dramatic shift. The sanctuary and halls that once brought us together sat quiet as we were forced to connect from home through screens. While virtual gatherings kept us linked, the deep, in-person fellowship we cherished was hard to replicate. By September 2023, Congregational Care Director Katherine Pugh noticed that many of our older adults had still not fully returned to the vibrant, face-toface community they enjoyed prior to 2020. Determined to bridge that gap, Katherine began brainstorming ways to bring everyone back together, and out of those ideas, our monthly Fellowship Lunch was born. Held on the third Thursday of every month in the New Life Center, the Fellowship Lunch offers a warm, welcoming space for congregation members to re-engage and build lasting friendships. Thanks to the generous funding of The Senior Adult Endowment Fund, Katherine puts on a free, catered meal for anyone who would like to join. The room quickly fills with energy as people don their nametags, share a meal, and catch up on life. Following lunch, the room gets lively as our congregation's competitive streak comes out during a few spirited rounds of Bingo, complete with prizes for the winners. While it might seem like a simple lunch on the surface, if you were a fly on the wall, you would see it is truly so much more. This group actively walks through life together, celebrating major milestones like birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and new grandbabies, while offering steady comfort during darker times, such as grieving a loved one or sending a child off to college. Faith in Action
Serving the People of El Salvador This August, a dedicated mission team representing both the Haymount UMC congregation and our broader local community traveled to El Salvador to serve as the hands and feet of Christ. Throughout their time in the country, the team poured their hearts into impactful outreach, tackling both vital construction projects and providing essential medical care to families in need. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, compassion, and commitment to putting faith into action abroad. Thank you to everyone who supported this mission through prayers and donations—your partnership made this life-changing work possible! Please enjoy a message written by Dr. Wes Jones below, as well as photos from their time in El Salvador. “The construction team helped dig a trench for the foundations of a school stadium cinder block wall, moving many wheelbarrow loads of dirt; also rebar pieces were assembled for the next phase of construction. The prayer team was busy and saw perhaps 100 people. The medical team saw about 150 patients, about half were children. One man had a large peritonsillar abscess that responded quickly to injected antibiotics. If the medical team had not brought injectable antibiotics, had arrived a day or two later, or if the man's illness had begun 1-2 days earlier, he may have had a catastrophic outcome. People today too frequently attribute healing to modern medicine, not recognizing the Lord working behind the scenes.” - Dr. Wes Jones
MERCI Center
School Supplies Drive & Visit On October 3, a group from HUMC will be making a visit to the MERCI Center in Goldsboro, NC. We will be meeting at HUMC at 8:30 AM and then driving together to the MERCI Center. There will be opportunities to carpool. Once we are at the MERCI center we will be helping put together School Kits for children in need in neighboring communities. Once our work is complete we will head back home, usually stopping for a delicious BBQ lunch on the way back! In preparation for our trip to the MERCI center in October, we are collecting necessary materials for School Kits! We are currently collecting the following items: Blunt Scissors, Boxes of 24 Crayons, One Subject Spiral Notebooks, Pencil Sharpeners, Rulers, Unsharpened Pencils, Large Pink Erasers and Two-Gallon re-sealable plastic bags. Only these specific items can be included in the school kits. You can place your donations in the marked bins located in the lobby of the NLC and outside of the Church Office. If you have any questions regarding this drive, or would like to learn more about our upcoming visit to the MERCI Center, contact Laurie Doherty at 910988-4265. Pilgrimage is a life-changing weekend event filled with amazing artists, thought-provoking speakers, and inspiring youth leadership – all bearing witness to the transforming love of Christ. This weekend is for students and adult student leaders seeking a weekend worship experience that calls everyone to a deeper, stronger faith in Jesus, challenging them to share God’s love in word and action. HUMC UMM Update UMM’s BBQ October 17 HUMC’s United Methodist Men will be holding their annual BBQ Lunch Fundraiser on Saturday, October 17! Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards supporting the efforts of the UMM. Join the UMM in the New Life Center from 11am-1PM and either dine in or take out our BBQ plates. This year the men will not be selling chicken, just BBQ along with two sides. Tickets are $10 per plate and can be purchased from any UMM Member. HUMC MomCo is excited to welcome new members for the upcoming year. You do not need to be a member of Haymount United Methodist Church or attend church regularly to join us. We have a wonderful year planned with encouraging meetings, meaningful friendships, and fun monthly playdates for moms and their children. Dinner and childcare for children ages 4 months to 5 years are provided at every meeting. This year, we will be focusing on building a strong community of support while learning to find Christ in the everyday joys and challenges of motherhood. We will also be hosting our fall event, Bubbles, Bikes & Bagels, on September 19 at 10am in the HUMC Rear Parking Lot. Bring your bikes, scooters, cars, or other wheels to play! Wednesday Evening Fellowship Fall Season Begins This Month! As we welcome in the fall season, we excitedly welcome back Wednesday Evening Fellowship, starting September 9! Wednesday Evening Fellowship is a time for us to come together as a congregation and enjoy a delicious meal and a time of fun and fellowship! Registration for the fall season, as well as for individual weeks is open now on our website! Remember to register by 5pm on the Monday before your desired meal by visiting our website or calling the Church Office. Prices are $7 for adults, $10 for an upsized meal, and kids eat free!
