Super Sunday September 8 This is a time of new beginnings for Haymount Church! We have many new staff, some of whom will be introduced in this publication. To them, we say, “Welcome!” We also have a new congregation joining us, and you will read about that as well. Christ UMC on Raeford Road is closing, and officially merged with Haymount on August 7 at a joint Charge Conference. Their first Sunday with us will be September 8, so please plan to welcome them if you see them at the 11:00 service that day. They will be bringing their assets with them, most of which will be placed in an investment account, the

There, we invite you to pray for God’s blessing and direction for Haymount Church, pray for all the people who will receive postcards and personal invitations to church on September 8, and pray for yourself and your family. Ask God to heal our nation. Pray for solutions to gun violence and racial injustice. Pray for those who protect and serve our nation both locally and abroad. Pray for our educators and students as they begin a new school year. Can you imagine what a blessing you will both give and receive from this “sweet hour of prayer?” Psalm 137:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” So let us pray fervently and faithfully for God’s blessing and guidance as we reach out to our community with His love. 2. Invite a friend. When you invite a friend, relative, acquaintance or neighbor, there is statistically a greater than 50% chance they will agree to come to church with you. Think what an eternal difference this could make for them and their families! 3. Eat a cookie. We are bringing back the old Haymount tradition of having lemonade and cookies after worship. In pretty weather, it will be served under the breezeway arches after the 8:30 and 11:00 services, and in the NLC during the 9:45. This is a time to seek out people you don’t know. Introduce yourself. Invite them to your Bible Study. And chat some with your old friends, too. By eating a cookie and sharing a smile after worship each Sunday, you will help connect people with Hope, Love, Peace and Joy! 4. Say Hello. There are certain places where it is not really appropriate to make eye contact with people and greet them, but Church is never one of those places. In the parking lot, on the sidewalk, and in the worship service try to make eye contact, smile and say hello to everyone, especially if you do not know them. When you are in worship and someone comes to sit near you, even if you don’t know them, and even it is during the prelude or prayer, immediately give them a warm, quiet greeting, and a friendly smile. Take a moment to chat after worship. Invite them to go with you for lemonade and a cookie. (continued on next page)

Worship is just as much about loving the people around us as it is about praising the Lord Jesus. In fact, the Bible tells us that loving our neighbor is always an appropriate way to worship. 5. Wear a name tag. Wearing a name tag is an important way of loving our neighbor. It is a little inconvenient to remember to pop it on, but it is one of the fastest ways to turn strangers into family. Many people at Haymount have told me they don’t know the names of many people they talk with at church and they are embarrassed to ask. That is only human. Our beautiful new name tags are magnetic. They won’t get anything sticky on your blouse and they won’t put a pin hole in your shirt. They cost $5, and you can order them by emailing amy.dean@haymountumc.org, You can also put your request to us in the mail. Just print your first and last name as you want it to appear, and include a check for $5, or simply stop by the church office. If yours hasn’t come yet, you can use a paper tag found in the pew pads. 6. When you fill out the pew pad, take time to put all of your contact information in every week. This is important because it will encourage newcomers to follow your example. 7. When you are asked to be a greeter or to help serve lemonade and cookies, say "Yes!" Extravagant welcome is one of the hallmarks of growing churches, and you cannot pay professionals to do that. It has to be each of us. We have exciting days ahead as we connect newcomers with the hope and healing of Jesus Christ. Thank you for helping make it happen!
The Bold and the Restless Join us for fellowship, fun and learning! We will meet again on Tuesday, September 17th at 10:00AM in the Conference Room. There will be time for catching up, meeting new friends, refreshments and learning. We will mix and mingle, talk about plans for fall, and enjoy a program with tips on how to clean out, throw out and organize all the "stuff" that has collected in our closet, attics and basements. Everyone is invited! Bring a friend!
You Can Make a Difference in the Life of a Child “Share with God’s people who are in need.” Romans 12: 13 In 2013, the Cumberland Road Elementary School Partnership – CRESP - began with the idea of helping school children who urgently need us. Since that time, our volunteers have made a difference in the lives of so many children! Whatever your gifts, there are several ways that you can be a vital part of this ministry! •Donate School Supplies: August 1 - September 15, drop off school supplies in boxes located outside of the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall and Church office. A list of supplies can be found below and at the drop off locations.
•Volunteer one hour each week in the classroom mentoring children K-5th
grade with reading.
•Volunteer after school with the school's Garden Club, Beautification
Program for Boys to Men Program.

A Heartfelt Thank You To our friends at Haymount, Gail and I wish to express our deep gratitude to you for your generous love offering as we prepared to depart from HUMC. Our brief Sabbatical is now over and we are gradually getting settled in my new role as Intentional Interim. With a few Sundays under my belt, the reception has been warm and we look forward to the ministry God has for us as the future unfolds. Yard Sale Appreciation With your help, we raised more than $7,000.00 on our last garage sale, and the checks are still coming in. That money will go into our music and arts fund for use on special things at church. Our next garage sale will be held November 9.
VBS and KidServe Thank you to all the VBS and KidServe volunteers and participants. We had a very successful week of learning and serving, and it would not have been possible without your help. This year we raised $2,061.00 for Heifer International. With that money, we were able to purchase 25 chicks, 5 goats and 8 pigs. Camp New Adventure
Thank you for the kindness of helping sponsor my girls so that they could attend Camp Rockfish this summer. Your kindness & generosity meant the world to our family. Without your help, our girls woudn't have been able to go. They loved camp so much & would come home every night having memorized new scriptures or singing new praise songs. I can definitely see a growth in their relationship with Jesus. They are praying more on their own now & even wanting to read their Bibles at such a young age. We truly appreciate you. Beginnings...It's Confirmation Time Do you have a sixth grader in your family? Do you have an older child who has never been confirmed in the Methodist Church? Would you love to help young people discover their walk with God as an older teen or adult? We need to know who you are! As the instructor (Professor Emeritus of Confirmation according to JoBeth Johnson!) I’m excited that we are about to begin another season! If you have a child ready to go through the Confirmation process, we will meet again this year from 6:00-7:30 on Wednesday evenings beginning on 9/11/19 and culminating on Confirmation Sunday in May 2020. If you have a child in sports or another potential conflict, don’t let that stop you. I have yet to have a student with whom we couldn’t work things out and this is a very important growing period and milestone in the life of young Christians. Our faith is the most important thing in our lives to develop and making it a priority for your children speaks volumes. I look forward to seeing you and your students. If you have questions before then, don’t hesitate to contact me. If you’d like to volunteer as a teen or adult mentor, I’d love to have a robust team to share the load, so let me know that as well. Music Ministries Launch - Fall 2019 Blessed are the flexible, for they shall never be bent out of shape. A favorite music teacher of mine at Methodist University used to repeatedly share that little bit of wisdom with us. Flexibility is always key when music rehearsals and performances are involved, because it is absolutely inevitable that something, somewhere is not going to go according to plan! Andrew and I are both excited to be joining the ministries of Haymount UMC. Coming aboard in August has its challenges, because Christmas is only 14 rehearsals away! We want to get our music ministries started as quickly as we can. For the month of September, all music ensembles will begin meeting as listed below. During the month of September, as we all begin to meet and plan and organize together, we will decide on any tweaks needed in the schedule and we will get a finalized schedule together to announce in October. We look forward to making plans for our wonderful liturgical dance groups, the Fellowship Choir, and our Men’s Ensemble to begin in late September or early October. More details coming soon on those. Meet Andrew Sanchez Graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Studies, I feel incredibly blessed to serve as the Leader of Contemporary
&
Worship at Haymount United Methodist Church. Leading people in the praise and worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the highest privilege I can imagine, and that is what I will be doing in New Sanctuary (the 9:45 service). In addition, I will accompany the youth choir, co-lead the orchestra with the Reverend Donald Warren (our new Director of Traditional Music and Facilities Manager), and be an instrumentalist at the 11:00 traditional service each Sunday. I served previously as the Music Director of Guilford Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC as well as an instrumentalist in several other churches in NC. As a conductor, I led my 45+ member orchestra performing my arrangements and original compositions. I have arranged music for many NY artists such as Bria Skonberg, JD Allen, and Erika von Kleist. Well versed in piano, trumpet, and flute, I create music that stirs the soul and brings love and comfort to my listeners. Privately teaching music lessons for the past 10 years, my passion for educating people in music is endless. A high level of professionalism carries into everything I do. I am overjoyed to be married (just a year!) to my high school sweetheart, Constance. Together we have two fur babies, Dexter and Butler, who light up our lives. Thank you for welcoming us so warmly!
Meet Father Jack Fr. Jack Morrison, a retired Roman Catholic Priest (Maronite Rite) is celebrating twenty-seven years of ministry. He studied in Washington, D.C. at the Dominican House of Studies, which is a Pontifical Institute. He has served churches in Beverly Hills, California, and Troy, New York, as well as serving nine years here in Fayetteville at St. Michael's Maronite Church. He has also served in New Bedford, Massachussetts and finally, in Jupiter, Florida. His organ teachers include: Charles Billings, Richard Booth, Claude Means, John Doney and Robert Knox Kennedy.He held the position of Administrator of the Royal School of Church Music in America for three years. Father Jack Conitnued The RCSM is a national association of churches and musicians established in England. The RCSM method is a graded training program for young boy and girl choristers. Throughout his 26 year music career, he has held positions as Organist and Choirmaster at many churches within the state of Conneticut. During his seminary studies, he served as Organist in various churches throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C. Father Jack is excited to bring his musical talents to HUMC. He calls himself the "on again - off again - on again (referring to the organ bench) musician. To quote Johann Sebastian Bach, "To God be the Glory!"
Meet Donald Warren I am very excited to be joining the staff at Haymount as the Minister of Traditional Music and Facilities Manager! Along with the congregation of Christ United Methodist, I give thanks to God for leading our two church families into uniting as one, serving Christ together here at Haymount UMC! I am a native of Fayetteville, a graduate of Terry Sanford High School and Methodist University with a double major in music and business. I hold a Master of Arts in Church Music and Liturgy from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, one of our United Methodist seminaries. I also hold a graduate certificate in United Methodist Deacon Studies from The Methodist Theological School in Ohio, also one of our United Methodist seminaries. I am a “right brain/left brain” kind of guy. My “right brain” loves the creativity of music. My “left brain” loves the order of business. Of course, good music and good facilities management both require creativity and order! My primary role with traditional music will require about three-quarters of my time, and my secondary role as facilities manager will require about one quarter. (continued on the next page)

Donald Warren - continued While serving as pastor at Christ UMC, I taught middle school Latin and worked as an after-school care worker at The Fayetteville Academy. Prior to that, I was director of music at Christ UMC, while working as a substitute teacher in the Cumberland County Schools and as the financial manager of the Clarendon House Homeowner’s Association. Before serving Christ UMC, I assisted with music and worship at Wesley Heights UMC – Fayetteville NC, served as Director of Instrumental Music at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ – Elgin IL, was Director of Music and Education Ministries at Cedar Falls Baptist Church – Fayetteville NC, and a music and youth assistant at Hay Street UMC – Fayetteville NC. My family roots are in Fayetteville. My parents are Don and Linda Warren, both retired educators, and my grandparents are Edna Hall, retired from Home Federal Savings and Loan, and Percy and Cleo Warren, also retired educators. My younger brother, Tommy, is a captain with the Fayetteville Fire Department, and lives in town with his wife, Leigh. When it comes to sacred music, my favorite classical-era composer is George Frideric Handel, and I particularly enjoy Hallelujah from Messiah, Hallelujah, Amen from Judas Maccabaeus, and the coronation anthem Zadok the Priest. My two favorite hymns are A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Martin Luther and For All the Saints by William W. How, set by Ralph Vaughan Williams. I like the contemporary works of Marty Haugen and Mark Miller. In the worship life of the Church, aside from the administration of the sacraments and preaching, congregational song is the most important component. Our hymns teach theology and doctrine in deeply impactful and profoundly memorable ways, and the lyrics to our songs of praise and worship allow the people of God to express their love and gratitude to God and their commitment to the cause of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Raising our voices together in song is a task and duty for the whole gathered assembly, and I look forward to being a supporter of that work of God’s people here at Haymount. Let all the world in every corner sing!

Some of you are probably wondering who are these people of Christ United Methodist Church and what is their story. Let me see if I can tell you our most recent story. We are a church that started in 1954. We have
a
beautiful sanctuary that can seat around 500 people. Over the years we have had our ups and downs like most churches. Founding members have passed, children moved away, younger people not interested in church. However, through all of this, we have remained a close family congregation. Over the years we have been in search of an answer for our declining membership. We prayed for guidance about our future. We prayed for God to show us what to do. Lead us. We were faithful and believed he would answer our prayers as He had so many times before. Over the past few years CUMC has made some very wise investments and the equity from those investments gave us opportunities to do some updating to the property. We were considering some new ideas - but just as our renovations began, the DOT decided to widen Raeford Road, affording us additional financial security to expand our projects. Of course this meant that our front door would be very, very near Raeford Road, so we had to take this into consideration. However, we were thinking that maybe this was an answer. With the additional money from the DOT for taking our front yard, we should do some additional updating in the sanctuary, reconstruct the entrance to be on the side, and hire a part time youth minster to start some youth programs so we could begin to grow. Lots of additional ideas were now being considered. Just at the time we were about to put the deposit down for our new sanctuary carpet, a person called to tell me that he had an offer for the purchase of our building and land that he would like me to take a look at. Therefore, we held off on the carpet deposit until we could look into this offer. (Keep in mind selling was not on OUR radar at this time, but little did we know God had other plans for us). Continued from page 16 After review of the contract and research of the company making the offer, all of the board agreed that this offer should be taken to the congregation. The congregation unanimously agreed to proceed with the possibilities of this offer. The board then began looking into other options for a place to call home. They researched buying a building, building a new church, renting, or a merger with another church that would be able to be home for our family. After many, many hours exploring options and number crunching, the board determined that the only thing that would make sense was to merge with another Methodist Church - one that would be a good fit for our family. Again, we discussed it with our congregation. They all agreed. They gave us ideas of what they would like this new family to feel like. They would like this church to be located in somewhat of a close vicinity to our now present location, a church with a strong children's and youth program, and if at all possible, a place for our Pastor, Donald and organist, Father Jack to continue to be with us, and of course, they wanted good music. (Christ UMC People love good music and food - but the food is a different story. I’ll tell you that one later). You see, they wanted no one left behind. The Board took on this task of researching the wishes of the congregation. They brought the findings back to the church family, and congregation then narrowed it down to two churches. After lengthy thought and prayers, they felt that God wanted them to be at Haymount. All of the wonderful Christ congregation were once again unanimous in their decision. The vote was made and all voted yes. (This was before we knew that there would be a position for Donald AND Father Jack). They felt like God was leading them to Haymount. This again showed me and the other board members that GOD was at work. We asked for HIS help and guidence, we listened for HIS answer, AND OUR FAITH brought us to this place. So, you see Christ UMC is not a church needing to “shut down” due to finances. We are a financially strong church with no debts. (Continued on Page 18)
Continued from page 17 Christ UMC is following a plan that God put in motion for us. Christ UMC needs a home for its family due to Commercial Progress, the DOT and Cumberland County encroaching on our home. Christ UMC is not closing, we are just decommissioning our building and The Christ Family is looking to move in with another Family Member. That is what families do...take care of one another. We are coming to Haymount with financial stability that can help “us” as a newly married family grow, worship and praise God together with a newfound strength and enthusiasm. GOD provided the path that he wanted us to take, we listened, and he opened doors that could have never been opened any other way. He has provided openings for our Pastor, Donald and organist, Father Jack. He has put hearts at ease, enabled everyone to feel comfortable and make decisions with a union that has never been seen before. To date ALL INVOLVED MEMBERS of CHRIST UMC HAVE AGREED ON EVERYTHING One Hundred Percent. Praise God. There is no other explanation for the way things happened and the time in which they happened except by God’s Hand. We have seen firsthand GOD at work. I am truly humbled by the Mighty Hand of God.

Grandparents What grandparent doesn’t look for the opportunity to talk about his/her grandchild? We have the perfect spot for you in the Grandparent Coffee and Conversation Group which meets every Tuesday at 10:00 am in Room 224. Join a group of grandparents who are striving to be intentional in their relationships with their grandchildren. Grandparents who want to be spiritual influencers and disciple-makers who guide the next generations to Christ and His purpose for them. You will learn from the experiences of others and feel supported in your celebrations and challenges as you grow into your role of Intentional Christian Grandparent. It is a grand group that is lots of fun and filled with grandparents who want to make a difference! September 8th is Grandparents Day and we will have a display in the narthex that Sunday. Some of the resources we have used will be on display, and special prayer cards which can guide your prayers for your grandchildren will be available.
