A Note From the Pastor
Sisters and Brothers:
Greetings in the Name of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ!
In my college years, I led a group of students on a work team to Hildalgo, Mexico, where we worked alongside the Methodists in beginning a new building Our work was simple: we dug 10 holes to prepare the footings for the new building Each hole measured 6 ft x 6 ft x 4 5 ft We then tied the rebar together, mixed the concrete by hand, and filled each hole By the end of the week, we were exhausted For a break, we traveled to the neighboring city of Monterrey and enjoyed the city's sights from an overlook at sunset We gathered for a time of worship and thanksgiving with our host pastor and prepared to eat a celebratory dinner
When we arrived at the restaurant, we learned that their (only) specialty was goat! As team leader, I heard the grumbling and invited our folks to accept the hospitality being offered. We were also facing a deadline for the last public transportation back to Hildalgo. So we ate quickly, paid for our meal, and sprinted to the bus station only to find out that the bus had not arrived. Then a bus arrived at the station, pulled into the stall, stopped, and its engine was turned off. We were told that this was our bus and that it would leave fifteen to twenty minutes later. There was a palpable sense of relief at not being stranded in Monterrey ... and we were tired ... and we were ornery ... and the night was not yet over.

Our shirts were showered with soot and most of us bore marks from the bus from where we had leveraged our bodies against the bus to get it started. And as we looked at our sorry state, we laughed A night that began well, spiraled down during dinner, and was crushed by the bad news of a late bus that couldn't start suddenly became the highlight of the trip What an adventure! Four decades later, I remember that moment, and a smile comes over my face
That moment is best defined as joy, a gift of the Spirit Frederick Buechner reminds us, in his book Wishful Thinking, that after Jesus washed his disciples' feet, showing them the power of serving others, Jesus spoke words of encouragement Jesus concluded, "these things I have spoken to you, that my joy might be in you, and that your joy might be complete" (John 15:11) Buechner notes that "happiness turns up more or less where you'd expect it to - a good marriage, a rewarding job, a pleasant vacation Joy, on the other hand, is as notoriously unpredictable as the one who bequeaths it."
In this resurrection season, I invite you to open to God's gift of joy. May it explode in an unexpected moment and remind you of the great love with which we are held by our God. If you want to read more about joy, I suggest Kate Bowler's Joyful, Anyway (2026) and Richard Beck's The Shape of Joy: The Transformative Power of Moving Beyond Yourself (2024). Bowler promises out of her wrenching experience with stage four cancer as a young mother that " you may never be cured of this grief, it's true. But you will be joyful, anyway, I swear." Connections Event Get To Know Haymount Better!
We are excited to announce an upcoming “Connections Event” for people who are new to our Haymount UMC community and want to learn more about who we are and how you can become involved in church life. In the spirit of a “new members class” but without the "classroom lectures," our Connections Event will offer a chance for newcomers to introduce themselves to each other, to meet our pastors and other church leadership, and find out about what life in the Haymount family is like.

Whether you’re a seasoned "Bam" and "Dot" pro or have never even seen a tile, we invite you to join our brandnew fellowship group, Monday Mahjong! Starting April 20, we will gather every Monday in the Fellowship Hall from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm for afternoons filled with strategy, laughter, and lighthearted competition. There is no need to worry about bringing your own tiles or mats —we have everything provided—all we need is you. The heart of this group is building meaningful connections and strengthening our church community outside of Sunday morning. Come as you are, learn a new skill, and enjoy some wonderful company! UWFaith Update

United Women in Faith had a Prayer and Self-Denial Program with the theme: The Future is Now. Invest in Children. The program focused on our National Mission Institutions (NMI) which help the most marginalized and vulnerable children through many varied programs. Partners in Ministry (PIM),located in Laurinburg, NC, is an NMI which serves people in several counties. The offering given at the program helps NMIs continue to serve
"Jesus Take the Wheel" is the theme for the Spiritual Enrichment Retreat held in Havelock,NC April 25 with a theme of fellowship, soul care, and spiritual renewal.
The Quadrennial Assembly of UWFaith is May 15 - 17 In Indianapolis, Indiana, with nearly 5000 worldwide members attending. "It is a sacred movement of Spirit-Led women dreaming boldly, believing deeply and leading courageously." (Tracy Malone) The theme is Dream It! Believe It! Do It! and is a space to gather and to live boldly into God's calling on our lives. Sue Morris and JoAnn Stanford will attend.

An Update from your Endowments Committee
The Endowment Committee wishes to thank everyone who came and participated in our “Getting Your Ducks in a Row: Funerals and Memorial Services” planning workshop We had a great turn out, and everyone seemed to glean a lot of information from what was shared If you would like to have a copy of the planning packet, please reach out to Donald Warren in the church office
One topic we discussed at the workshop is the importance of having your will or estate planned out and your wishes in writing, to have these details taken care of so your family and heirs know what your wishes are and how to care for the assets you leave behind. This includes making a provision for your church in your final plans. Tithing is such an important part of Christian discipleship in one ’ s lifetime that it is an important spiritual practice to plan to tithe your estate in your will. This continues the discipline of faithful giving that you have practiced throughout your life, and it makes provision for your church for the future after you are gone. If you have questions about how to add a codicil to your will to tithe your estate, please reach out to the church office.
Building on The Rock: Maintaining our Sacred Space Your Trustees Committe Update
As of the end of April, we are expecting our new HVAC chillers to arrive within the next couple of weeks, with installation to begin right after Memorial Day. Hopefully they will have the new chillers online within 3 or 4 days. We are grateful to the donors who have helped support this project to make it possible!
We are also eagerly awaiting the new protective coverings for our stained glass windows The snow days we had earlier this year put the order for our supplies a little behind, since our contractor is located in Hickory NC, they were closed for over a week during the heavy snow and ice, but our supplies are coming and hopefully we will see work beginning soon! Again, we are very grateful to the donors who have helped get his project underway
Work has begun on our columbarium on the western side of the sanctuary, and it is good to see that project quickly taking shape Once the columbarium structure itself has been built, it will be finished off with architectural stones that will help it blend into the surrounding buildings on our church campus
Trustees continue to tackle projects around our building and grounds that had been left as deferred maintenance projects that now need attention If you would like to help with funds for these projects, please donate to the HUMC Trustees Immediate Needs Fund or the HUMC Building Fund. Thank you.

Sunday, April 19 was confirmation Sunday for Haymount United Methodist Church In the United Methodist Church, confirmation is the process by which a person publicly confirms their faith and takes vows of membership It is the transition from “inherited faith” (vows made by the individual’s parents) to “personal faith” (vows made by the individual) This year we were able to confirm 7 young people after they completed many weeks of classes and preparation We are excited to welcome these wonderful youth into our congregation and we congratulate them on this major milestone in their faith and lives

Day Camp at Camp Rockfish
ABUNDANCE ORCHARD VBS
oin us in our second year of Abundance chard where we’ll learn about God’s love in New Testament. We’ll meet for VBS on ne 2-4th from 9am to 12pm. Each day will clude games, stories, crafts, music, snacks d fun -- all while learning about God’s love r each and every one of us! Kids ages 3 rs old through completion of 2nd grade are ted to join us There is no cost for VBS, ough registration is required no later than y 5th so that we can be good stewards in planning for all of our Kids to have a fantastic time!
Kids are invited to come experience Day Camp at Camp Rockfish with your HUMC Kids community! We’ll head out from Haymount United Methodist Church at 8:00am sharp June 17, 18 and 19 to Camp Rockfish in Parkton, NC and will return each day around 4pm. We’ll experience all things Camp Rockfish without the overnight camping. If you’re Kindergarten (must be 5 years old) through 8th grade, you are invited to join us! Registration is REQUIRED NO LATER THAN MAY 13! Registration fee of $100 per camper is required. This fee includes transportation, lunch and activities.

Our Easter Eggstravaganza was a major success this year! We hosted over 200 children and their families from around our community, allowing us to show witness to them as well as have a wonderful time! We want to thank everyone who volunteered to help make this event so spectacular!

Spring Garage Sale “Thank You”

Our Spring Garage Sale, held on March 13 and 14 was able to raise a total of $7,845.43 to go towards Youth Missions, our El Salvador Mission Trip, and Miracle Sunday! We want to thank everyone who donated items to be sold at our sale as well as everyone who shopped our sale! We are truly in awe of the generosity of our volunteers, church members, and community Our Summer Garage Sale will take place July 17 & 18! On Wednesday, May 27 at 12pm we will be hosting Nara Melkonyan, a missionary from Armenia, who Haymount United Methodist Church supports. We will be hosting a luncheon in our Fellowship hall to get to know Nara and listen as she gives a short presentation. Nara will be here to tell us about her work in Armenia, and discus the current state of the nation from her first hand point of view. Haymount UMC has supported Project AGAPE, which is the collaborative effort of both United Methodist conferences in North Carolina as well as the Armenian Apostolic Church since 1993.

Prelude To Memorial Day Celebration

It’s time to strike up the band with another star-studded spectacular! Due in part to last year’s stunning success, singers and instrumentalists from around the region are gathering for another tour de force that would make Uncle Sam proud! A concert for patriots of all ages, we invite you to raise a flag to the strains of Aaron Copland, Irving Berlin, John Philip Sousa, and others as we pay tribute to the valiant men and women who gave their all for freedoms light!
Admission to this concert is free and open to all A Freewill offering will be accepted to support our Music For A Great Space concert series.

Join the Summer Choir
Summer is a great time to see what it’s like singing in the choir During the months of June and July, the Chancel Choir rehearses from 7:00-8:30 pm in the choir room Music is prepared for all of the summer months including August. Finance Update
From your Finance Committee
As of the end of the first quarter of 2026, our revenues have totaled $459,627.12, and our expenses have totaled $278,542.09, giving us a current budget surplus of $181,085.03. Since March 31st marks the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year, our expected income for the first quarter was $329,678.75 and our expected expenses for the first quarter $329,556.75. We are ahead of where we had planned at this point in the year in giving, and we are below where we had planned at this point in the year for expenses.
The reason for this current surplus is that as of March 31st, we have 12 families who have paid their 2026 pledge in full, 3 families who have paid over 75% of their pledge, 9 families that have paid over 50% of their pledge, and 27 families that have paid over 26% of their pledge, meaning they are “ahead” of their planned giving for the year, for a total of 51 families who have given more than expected as of the end of March. We have 29 families who have paid 25% of their pledge, which is the expected amount for the first quarter. Of people who pledged for 2026, this represents 80 households at or above the expected giving amount for the first quarter.
To many United Methodists, the idea of tithing is scary and fraught with anxiety. To others, it is exciting, inviting — and the right thing to do. In the Bible, the law given through Moses required that the Israelites give a tithe, or one-tenth, of the produce of their land and livestock to support the work of the priesthood (Leviticus 27:30-33). Today, many Christians donate a tithe, or 10 percent of their income, to support their church ministries and missions. Tithing is simply a way to fulfill our responsibility as Christians to share what we have with others. Tithing is not a “rule,” per se, but rather it is a revelation. We are invited to adopt a tithing lifestyle because it is part of God's revelation that a generous life is the best life to live. Tithing is not about accounting; it is about acknowledging that God is the source of all gifts. Yes, the 10 percent mathematics of tithing helps us to demonstrate that acknowledgement, but the real issue is to acknowledge that God is the God of all things — including our possessions. In the midst of a consumer culture here in America, that is an important acknowledgement for us. Tithing is not about finances, it is about faith. This is not about raising money for the local church, it is about teaching people to be faithful to God. One of the scripture promises around tithing is found in Malachi 3:10, in which God urges, "Bring your full tithe to the temple treasury. Test me in this and see if I don't open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams."

Rev Woody Wells named Pastor Emeritus
Honoring Rev. Wells’ Legacy
The Church Council of Haymount United Methodist Church has bestowed the title of pastor emeritus on the Rev Woody Wells as of April 26, 2026, in grateful recognition of his years of devoted service and love for this congregation
The title Pastor Emeritus is an honor bestowed by a congregation in recognition of distinguished pastoral service This title affirms a continuing relationship of love and respect, and honors the enduring impact of one ’ s ministry Derived from Latin, pastor emeritus literally means shepherd who has meritoriously served one ’ s term, and it signifies one who has earned their discharge through honorable service, allowing them to retain their title in retirement as a sign of respect and honor. The United Methodist Church gives thanks for the ministry of retired clergy who continue to serve Christ through prayer, witness, and presence.

Heritage Sunday - Observed on the third Sunday of May, this day calls The United Methodist Church to honor its heritage by committing itself to the continuing call of God known and spread by Charles and John Wesley, along with others the early Methodist movement reached and with whose denominations we are all joined as The United Methodist Church
Aldersgate Day (May 24) - Aldersgate Day is celebrated on May 24 (or the Sunday closest) to commemorate the day in 1738 when John Wesley experienced assurance of his salvation. Wesley reluctantly attended a group meeting that evening on Aldersgate Street in London. As he heard a reading from Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans, he felt his "heart strangely warmed." Wesley wrote in his journal that at about 8:45 p m "while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death "
Ascension of the Lord - The Ascension of the Lord is the event where Jesus, after his resurrection, ascended bodily into heaven. This event is celebrated in the Christian faith on Ascension Thursday, which is traditionally 40 days after Easter
Ascension Sunday – In some Christian traditions, the Feast of the Ascension is celebrated on the seventh Sunday of Easter, rather than on the traditional Thursday. This shift is often attributed to a trend of transferring Holy Days to Sundays, enabling greater participation and solemn celebration among the faithful
Pentecost - Pentecost takes place on the 50th day after Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles
Trinity Sunday - The first Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday celebrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three Persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Peace with Justice Sunday (Sunday after Pentecost) - The United Methodist Church uses this day to speak out for peace and justice. Our Social Principles call us to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as peacemakers in resolving conflict The United Methodist Church has a historic commitment to peace and justice Through the General Board of Church and Society's consultative status with the United Nations, we engage in UN meetings to promote peaceful and just efforts.
May and June are filled with other celebrations! Some of these have their roots in Christian tradition, and some of them do not The ones that are not specifically Christian are often recognized in Christian churches, and so explanations for those are included.
National Day of Prayer – An American civic holiday observed by people of all faiths on the first Thursday in May in the United States The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The day is intended to bring together people of all faiths to pray for the nation and its leaders. People of many different faiths join in prayer on this day This is not a liturgical or Christian holiday
May Day/International Workers Day - Celebrated annually on May 1st, May Day began as an ancient celebration that occurs halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere It may have grown out of the ancient Roman festival of Floralia International Workers Day is also celebrated on May 1 and is also referred to as May Day, commemorating a general strike that occurred in the United States on May 1, 1886 to call for the establishment of the 8-hour workday. Father’s Day - In the United States, Father's Day was founded in the state of Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. Smart held her father in great esteem. While hearing a church sermon about the newly recognized Mother's Day at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Sonora felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition as well. She approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her own father's birthday, June 5, as the day of honor for fathers The Alliance chose the third Sunday in June instead It is not a Christian or liturgical holiday
Juneteenth (Jun 19) - A federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. It is not a Christian or liturgical holiday.
What a whirlwind of a year it has been at MomCo! From heartfelt conversations over lukewarm coffee to the joyful chaos of our playdates, this season has been defined by one thing: fellowship. Our community grew in ways we didn't quite expect. This year, we were proud to host 15 regular members, but the most exciting part? Over 75% of those moms are not active members or regular attendees of our church. It has been a true privilege to open our doors and create a "home away from home" for women throughout our wider community
The Grand Finale: End-of-Year Celebration
We aren’t saying goodbye, but we are certainly going out with a bang! We invite all our members and their families to join us for our final event of the season.
