Today, today, today I'm finally on my way The time has come to say Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Those words have been ringing around in my head lately, especially as I have thought about this last What’s Happening newsletter article. It’s funny. Forty-one years ago, when I received my first assignment under Episcopal Appointment, my thoughts were all focused on the “firsts” in my life; the first sermon I would preach, the first wedding I would do, the first baptism I would perform, the first time I would meet with the
Board of Ordained Ministry and so on. Eventually the “firsts” shifted to the “onlys.” I began to think about the only time I would be ordained as a Deacon to be followed by the only time I would be ordained as an Elder a couple of years later. Lately, I’ve been noticing yet another shift from the “onlys” to the “lasts.” I’ve taken note of the last Christmas Eve Service I’ll lead, the last Holy Week, the last Easter Service, the last baptism, the last new member I’ll receive etc. Well, on June 15th, I will hear my name read for the last time at Annual Conference as an active United Methodist Pastor. It is really hard to realize that this “last” has come so quickly. As a young pastor, full of energy, excitement and more than a little ignorance so long ago, looking into a future of “firsts” made forty-one years seem so far away. (continued on next page)

However, just as the mist of early morning dew gives way to the heat of sun, so has forty-years evaporated, it seems. I am deeply grateful for all of the congregations I’ve been privileged to serve. All of them were precious gifts blessed with saints of God. I didn’t deserve any of them and they didn’t deserve me. They deserved better. However, in the wisdom of six bishops and their cabinets and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I was given the sacred trust of serving them as pastor in charge. Now, this is not to say that all forty-one years have been a cake walk. There have been times when difficult decisions had to be made and actions had to be carried out. However, it has always amazed me in the way in which God has revealed God’s self, demonstrating that “the Church is of God and shall be preserved to the end of time.” That reality isn’t a “first” “only” or a “last,” it’s an “always.” On June 23rd I will preach my last sermon at Haymount at a combined service. Instead of our usual three services we’ll just have one in the sanctuary. That sermon will effectively end my pastoral ministry as an active clergy in the UMC. On June 24th, I’ll no longer be the lead pastor in charge of this congregation. John and Elizabeth Tyson will be the pastors of record from that day forward. It is important that your pastors receive a robust welcome and I’m sure you will do so for them. In many ways, Fayetteville is home for them. They are excited to be coming here and I know you will be excited to receive them.

Retirement Reception Invitation Our father, the Rev. Francis Daniel, is going to retire this June after 43 years in pastoral ministry. HUMC Discipleship Update What makes for a community of faith? It was an important question for the Discipleship Team at our January meeting, as we decided to make fostering community our focus for 2019. Our stated purpose, which takes place in the context of our church community, is to provide discipleship opportunities for people of all ages and stages for the purpose of guiding God's people into the vision of Haymount UMC. As we put our heads together and came up with different answers to the question at that first meeting, one characteristic of a community of faith stood out to me - committed to a purpose. The following are some of the committed people who make up the different ministry areas on the Discipleship Team, and help make our community of God stronger: Ashley Taylor, with the help of her daughter Hannah, is our Higher Education Coordinator. She works tirelessly to gather a database of our college-aged church members. (Not an easy task considering that they move every year.) She sends each person a weekly devotional via text message and hand-written notes with gift cards that convey well wishes from their Haymount church family at exam time. Christi Lockhart represents and helps guide the Special Needs Ministry. The community of God is a diverse one, and Christie helps ensure that our space is meaningful and enriching to our young special needs population. Gerry Croll is our Older Adult Representative. Sometime there are barriers to community. One barrier Gerry identified and hopes to work on is transportation for our older adults. He serves as a liaison to our newly formed Older Adult Council. Hannah Gray is the Young Adult Representative. She keeps us informed of the young adult group that meets on Sunday nights. Craig Pryzgoda represents the Scouts and Diane Helfrich guides our newest church members into their journey of faith as Confirmation Leader. (Continued on Page 9)

Dayton Dawson Endowment Gift Provides Books for Cumberland Road Elementary Students Haymount UMC is committed to making a positive impact on children in our community. In 2013, the Cumberland Road Elementary School Partnership (CRESP) was launched. Through the CRESP program, we are able to reach a population of children who need assistance with learning skills and school supplies. We have ten volunteers who are in the school each week working one-on-one with students who need additional help with their studies, especially reading. There are 341 students from Pre-K through 5th grade at Cumberland Road. 98% of them come from lower socio-economic homes, qualifying them for free lunches. Extra items, such as books, are not possible for these parents to purchase. Studies show that, on average, students lose two months of reading skills over the summer. With students who are already having difficulties, this risk is even greater. Recently, the Dayton Dawson Endowment made a very generous donation to CRESP that will allow us to provide these students with their own books for the summer! Donations such as this allow Haymount UMC to continue making a difference in the lives of these children – thank you!

Discipleship Article Continued The Discipleship Team consists of six at-large members as well: Hannelore Otten, Denise Rowe (secretary), Amelia Gillette, Kim Pryzgoda, Lori Coleman, and Faith Parese. Amelia Gillette, who also agreed to be the Co-Chair, continues to faithfully work on the Discipleship Map to make it the best experience it can be. All of these people meaningfully represent the larger church and contribute to our conversations each month. They also help out with efforts such as Teacher Appreciation week. Our invaluable church staff members are Dorothy Funkhouser and Paul Street. We could not do anything without them. Eileen Hatch represents the preschool. As you can see, your Discipleship team is committed to the purpose of guiding you into the vision of Haymount of glorifying God by bringing hope and healing to today's families. Scout News News From Troop 740 In our Church’s efforts to foster growth in our young people to become active, capable citizens, our Scouts have been busy this past month. Our new girls’ Troop camped out the first weekend of May to learn basic outdoor skills in their journey along the Scouting trail. Several members of our boys’ Troop finished the Backpacking merit badge with a 5-day backpacking trip in the NC mountains. Members of both Troops visited a bee farm in Hoke county to learn about environmental science, as well as, look at nature up close and personal (and get to wear cool beekeeper suits). Adventure continued in May with a Wilderness Survival merit badge weekend where scouts learned the basics of fending for themselves in the wilderness. In June, our combined girls’ and boys’ Troops will spend a week at summer camp experiencing the great outdoors and learning about themselves and their world.
