Elizabeth and I are pleased to be coming home to Fayetteville and to Haymount. Some of you know us because Elizabeth was Director of Christian Education at Haymount from 1994-98. At that time, Haymount didn’t have an Associate Pastor, so Elizabeth did a combination of things appropriate to the roles of D.C.E. and Associate Pastor. Led by the inimitable John Bergland, you took care of us in ways we have never forgotten when our family was young. You have a place in our hearts. We lived in Fayetteville for 15 years (with two years in Clinton) before being appointed to Swansboro UMC for two years and then Duck for 9. But we kept our house on Westmont Drive because we hoped that one day we might be appointed as your pastors. God has blessed us by sending us
home to you. However, many of you have come to Haymount in the last decade or two and don’t know us, so let us introduce ourselves. Elizabeth was born in Philadelphia, but her family moved to Los Angeles when she was 9. Her Dad was an engineer with J.P.L. Elizabeth was raised in a home where Jesus was loved, and she gave her life to him when she was 8. During her teen years she did youth ministry and mission work. She graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara with a B.A., and then from Gordon Conwell Seminary with a Master’s of Divinity. Ever inquisitive, she then did a Master’s of Sacred Theology at Yale and a Ph.D. in Ecclesiastical History at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The focus of her doctoral work was in the modern history of missions and Church growth. Since that time she has been invested in ministry doing missions, youth work, and Christian education. For the past 8 years she has been the pastor at Mighty Wind UMC in Nags Head. Mighty Wind is a contemporary style church which meets at First Flight Middle School. Elizabeth has been a Provisional Elder since 2015 and was ordained an Elder in Full Connection in 2019. I am blessed to be a fourth generation preacher. My great grandfather was a baptist preacher. My grandfather, Jack Tyson, became a Methodist preacher in this area (you’ll see his picture in my office). He and my grandmother, Irene, had six sons, each of whom became Methodist preachers (you’ll see their picture, too). I accepted the Lord when I was 6 and have known the Lord increasingly in a personal way since that time. He is the essence of life to me, and I seek his presence and power every day. I am from Chapel Hill, and graduated from Barton College with a B.A. in Religion before getting the Master's of Divinity at Duke and the Ph.D. in Practical Theology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. My focus was on the preaching and teaching of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. In 2017, I graduated from Duke with an M.B.A. I felt led to do this in order to become a more effective pastoral leader. I have some books published on topics of inclusion, conversion, and Church administration. Elizabeth and I first met in Edinburgh because we were in the same Ph.D. program. In 1993, almost immediately after graduating, I was appointed to Victory UMC in Fayetteville, and Elizabeth soon came to Haymount. John Jr. was born and went to the delightful Haymount Preschool. Then Victoria and Charlotte came along, and I was pastor at Johnson Memorial for 4 years, Grace in Clinton for 2 years, and Hay Street for 5 years. During our wonderful years at Hay Street we benefitted from the vision and leadership of people like Bill Hurley, the Matthews family, the Nimocks family, the Weeks family, the Taylor family, the Goetz family, the Buie family, the Howie family, Dr. Alice Smith, and George and Dena Breece. We built the new Family Life Center at about the same time you were building yours under Brian Gentle’s excellent leadership. During our Fayetteville years, I had the privilege of teaching at Methodist University every single term for 15 years. I will always be grateful for that. I learned a great deal about the Scriptures by teaching them on a university level, and those years shaped my pastoral teaching style. Under great leadership, Methodist has continued to grow and expand beautifully, and the new Matthews Chapel is a glorious addition. I was proud to be present when it was dedicated last December. Our years at the beach have been marvelous. John Jr. has graduated from UNC and works in advertising in L.A. Victoria is a Jr. at UNC this Fall, and Charlotte will be a First Year there. Our congregations have truly been an inspiring model of Jesus Christ’s love to the world. We know the same is true of Haymount, and we look forward to loving, learning and leading with you. You have welcomed us with extraordinary kindness. The Staff Parish Relations Committee, all the staff, and the Trustees have been so helpful. We appreciate all the strong backs and hearts that helped us move, all the gifts of food, the hospitality, and the signs of welcome. We are not surprised, but we are grateful. Art Camp Art Camp will take place July 22-25 for children who've completed grades 2 - 8. Camp will run from 9AM-12PM.

Glazed Strawberries and Cream Cake Served at the Senior Sunday Reception Makes 2 cakes Cake 1 ½ cup egg yolks
1 cup granulated sugar
1 ½ cup cake flour
1 ¼ cup egg whites
¾ cup granulated sugar
Pinch of salt

1 Tbsp vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Prepare 2 standard ( 17X12X1 inches) jelly roll pans with
cooking spray and parchment paper. 3.
Combine cake flour and salt. Sift them together 3 times. Set aside

In a mixing bowl fitted with a whisk attachment, combine the egg yolks and 1 cup of sugar.
Beat on high speed until pale in color. To achieve the right consistency, when you lift the whisk, the mixture should fall like a ribbon. Stir in vanilla. Now, fold in the flour mixtue. 7.
In a clean bowl whisk the egg whites on low spead until frothy. Add the remaining sugar
and turn the speed to high. Whip the egg white until almost stiff peaks. This means when you pull the whisk up, the egg whites will almost stand straight up on the end of the whisk and not fall back into the bowl. Fold the egg whites into the egg and flour mixture in thirds. 9.
Spread the mixture onto the prepared pans and bake for 6-7 minutes. Cool.
For the Glaze 12.25 oz white chocolate chips
¼ c plus ½ Tbsp water
1 1/3cup plus 1 Tbsp granuated sugar
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup plus ¼ cup sweetened comdensed milk
1Tbsp plain gelatin

Pour chocolate chips into a large bowl,

In a separate pot, combine the gelatin and ½ cup of cold water in a small bowl. Set aside.

Heat the water, sugar, and condensed milk to a simmer. As soon as sugar dissolves,
Remove from the heat. Stir in gelatin. Pour the hot milk mixture over the chips and whisk until smooth and completely melted. For the filling 1 lb strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 cup whipped cream/cool whip
Spread the whipped cream over the the cooled cake leaving a 1 inch border. Add half of the strawberries to a third of the cake. Next, gently roll the cake placing them seam side down and place on a cookie sheet lined with a cooling rack. Now, place the cake in the freezer for 30 minutes. Then, take out the cake and cover with the glaze. Top with the remaining strawberries and allow glaze to set. Slice and enjoy!

Congregational News Outstanding Senior of the Year Joann Herron Received the "Outstanding Senior of the Year" Award through the Cumberland County Council on Older Adults on Thursday, May 16, 2019. Joann was recognized for her many years of service and commitment to her work with the Red Cross and her varied leadership roles in the life of Haymount UMC, notably her work with older adults through the Seniors' Day Out Ministry. We congratulate our dear friend and sister in Christ, Joann, for her compassionate heart and love for God's people.
Kids Konnect/Kids Sunday School Co-Teachers Do you find it in your heart to teach God's children God's Holy Word? We need adults who will commit to building a relationship with our children by opening to them a relationship with our Awesome God. Job Description: Prepare lessons weekly with user-friendly materials; pray for the students; arrive at 9:30am on Sunday mornings to set up classroom and welcome children; co-teach and enjoy the children until 10:45am.
