Note From the Pastor Continued Praise God from whom all blessings flow! The year ahead is bright with promise. Vaccines are already being distributed, and there will be hugs, handshakes, concerts, and Holy Communion in a few short months. It will feel so good to get back to normal. Give Me Jesus! January 3. “Wise Ones Still Seek Him” Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12 and Matthew 7:7 We seek Jesus. Not religion or ritual, but an authentic relationship with the living Lord, Jesus Christ. When we seek Him, He promises we will find him. January 10 “Fill Me Up With Jesus” Scripture: Mark 1:4-11 When we are immersed in baptism, this is a symbol of being immersed in Jesus. The old man or woman dies and is buried. The new man or woman in Christ rises. We are saturated with, filled up with, the Spirit of Jesus. January 17. “Children Find Jesus, Too” Scripture: I Sam 3:1-10 Sometimes adults forget that children have a hunger and a capacity to experience and to love Jesus. At Haymount, we remember childhood experiences of Jesus, and seek to create an environment where today’s children can experience Him. January 24 ‘Who Is Jesus?” Scripture: Mark 1:1 In Mark’s gospel we see that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior, the Son of God. This one verse of scripture is the main point of Mark’s entire gospel!

Church Fellowship - When Life is Good Again by Carol Lloyd I realize life is still good, but I love Dolly Parton’s new song “When Life is Good Again.” Aren’t you dreaming about what church will be like when the pandemic is over? A newly appointed committee is dreaming of our congregation meeting together for food and fellowship. Our purpose is to develop and implement plans for a regular church family fellowship, centered around a meal, that brings together all ages of the church family. Watching my children and now my granddaughter interact with adults of our church has inspired me to lead this committee. Many changes have occurred over the more than forty years of Wednesday Evening Fellowship and we believe this is the perfect time to shake it up. In an effort to re-envision this family fellowship time, committee members are discussing many creative ideas. Our desire is to have fellowship across the broad spectrum of ages in the congregation and staff with continued growth in relationships with our newest members, and to also meet the needs of children and youth. In order to coordinate with other church activities and family schedules, we are open to a variety of possibilities. As we move into 2021 and the church begins to develop plans for the future, we want to hear from you! We will design a survey to reach every family in the church, available online and in paper form. Look for the survey link to be included in the weekly e-updates and a paper version in the February monthly newsletter. One of the many negative impacts of this year both personally and for our church has been the lack of congregational fellowship. How we long to eat, hug and fellowship together as God’s people in celebration and praise of his many blessings.
Haymount United Methodist Women (HUMW) 2021 FANTASY FOOD SALE And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13 To say 2020 was an unusual year is an understatement – closed churches, limited gatherings, wearing masks, social distancing, pandemic, etc. These events also made it impossible to have the Annual Food/Bake Sales to raise money for women, children, and youth. So this year, Haymount UMW has decided to offer an unusual version of the Food/Bake Sale – a FANTASY FOOD SALE – with no food!!! How can you help? Just make a donation (tax deductible) through February 14 that will help women, children and youth locally and worldwide. This is how the proceeds have been used in past years: Cumberland County DSS (teenage foster children), HUMC Camp New Adventure, Weekday Ministries (scholarships), Youth Mission Projects, Africa support, Methodist Home for Children, Robeson County Church and Community Center, and Hygiene and School Kits. Preschool News Is it really time to register for the 2021-2022 school year? Yes, it is! Church members, current students and their siblings will be able to register first before we open registration to the public. Registration begins Wednesday, January 20, 2021. The registration form is available on the church website: www.haymountumc.com. Please print the form (one per child), complete it, and bring it with you to registration. The registration fee is $100 for the first child and $75 for each additional child. Registration fees can be paid with cash, money order, or checks made payable to HUMC Preschool. Please Note! Our procedure will be different due to COVID-19 restrictions: On Wednesday, January 20, please enter the Fellowship Hall by the door at the ramp. Socially distanced spaces will be marked inside as you wait in line. Everyone will exit through the door that leads directly outside – there is no need to go anywhere else in the building. Masks are required. Registration will begin at 9:30 am and last until 11:30 am. If you cannot attend that day, please call the preschool office to make other arrangements 910-484-5646.
What’s Happening for Kids, You Ask? LIGHT Kids Group for Kindergartners-Fifth Graders • Meets every Sunday, 5:30-7:00, in-person (masks and COVID protocol followed) • We eat dinner and fellowship together, play games, do crafts and mission projects and learn about Christian kids in other countries and how they live out their faith. Kids Worship Time for 4-year-olds through Fifth Graders • Meets every Sunday morning @ 10am on Zoom for about half an hour • We sing, pray together and read from the Bible. The lessons are based on the sermon message by Dr. John for each particular Sunday. (Continued on Page 7)

Children's Ministries Continued Worship Comes Alive! Workshop for children and their parents and grandparents Tentatively Planned (pending COVID restrictions) • January 31st, 12:15-3:30pm • We will begin with lunch together and then move into learning about all the elements of worship, why we do what we do and how we do it. It will culminate in an organ demonstration and the celebration of Holy Communion in the Sanctuary. • Registration will be required. Stay tuned for confirmation of the event and registration information. 365 For 365 days, I have been blessed to call myself the Director of Youth Ministries at Haymount. For 365, I have met with many of you, in-person or online, and I have seen passion and gifts for ministry. But what has been the greatest blessing this past year is being able to see the Holy Spirit moving at this church! I have seen and heard numerous examples of the youth, children, and adults who have made an impact within the walls of Haymount, in Fayetteville and North Carolina, and the world. So many of us are on the front line of ministry, changing lives and protecting lives. Go back and watch a few of the Mission videos from Sunday mornings and see for yourself. I have seen a church that answers the call of Jesus in all that we do! (Continued on the following page)
365 Continued Jesus called His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 to “go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.” We have taken part in some new ways to show the love of Christ to others this year (for example, social distancing rather than gathering, wearing masks rather than showing our smiles… What a strange year it has been!) We are called to go out and make disciples, but Jesus understood the daily challenges that we would face, promising to be with us in all of it. We just need to be witnesses to the world of the love and grace of God, and Jesus will provide! In this new year, this new set of 365 days, let’s all commit to sharing the good news, in word and action, just as we have in 2020. Let’s find new ways to grow in God, to be nurtured in God, to hope in God, and to love because of God. In December, to finish a series on how and why to pray, the youth had a special night of prayer. Other activities included building gingerbread houses, playing gaga ball in the new pit, and a “Worst Christmas Ever” themed party. Youth will continue having ECHO youth group on Sundays (5:307:00, dinner provided) in the New Life Center and our midweek activities on Wednesdays (4:30-5:30) outside the New Life Center. A Note From Andrew Happy New Year! We made it through 2020. We all came into 2020 with great expectations and new year’s resolutions, as we do every year. 2020 was the start of a new decade and so if you are like me, you may have had a certain kind of optimism about what the new decade would bring. We were entering the roaring 20s of the 21st century! How exciting, right? HA! Little did we know that in just a few months after bringing in the new year that we would experience so many new firsts. Some good and some bad. Some of us experienced financial hardships as we got laid off from our jobs. Some of us experienced great joy while being forced to stay home with family. Some of us may have experienced great pain while staying home with family. All of us experienced the storm of a global pandemic, one that we have not seen the likes of which in over a century. 2020 certainly was a year all of us will never forget. We have also learned many new things. I think all of us have gained an extra skill set or two while having to quarantine. We have all had to learn to adapt to our many different situations. Our educators had to completely revamp the way they teach. They have had to completely revamp the classroom, or the “class-zoom,” I should say. Restaurants had to come up with ways to offer a safe dining experience. Almost all restaurants who did not deliver before the pandemic now do, expanding their clientele and business to a whole new level. Churches around the world had to suddenly become more online conscientious. This was a huge step for the 21st century church. Many churches, including Haymount, are now reaching people who never would have even thought about coming to church, simply because it is online. Many churches have had to learn how to have an online presence, learn how to brand, learn how to livestream, and learn more about modern equipment, forcing us to let go of some of our old ways of doing things and opening up new ways to reach the people of the world. We are an adaptive people. God has made His creations resilient and able to go about change. So, as we enter the new year, let us look back on how we triumphed over the hardships of 2020 and look forward to what 2021 will bring. (Continued on the following page)
A Note From Andrew I believe God has prepared His Church for something great and something big and 2021 may be the year when that “something” occurs. I pray our contemporary service will continue to grow as we reach more people. Thank you to all the volunteers, veteran and new, for all you do for the contemporary worship service at Haymount. Troop 740 B and G 2020 By Conner Ezzell 2020 has been a long and confusing year. There have been a lot of strange events. Pandemic, wildfires, Stock market crash, protests, and the list goes on. The troop was meeting normally for January, February, and the first part of March. The weekend of spring camporee is when NC decided to go into quarantine. Summer Camp was canceled, we stopped meeting in person until June. The girls started meeting using online platforms in April and the boys joined them soon after. The girl’s and boy’s troop worked on merit badges and rank requirements and teaching the soon-to-be crossovers the requirements for Scout rank and part of the Tenderfoot rank. The YAC was sold so the troops needed to find a new place to store all of their gear. We found a storage unit that we now store troop supplies in. We have run several campouts using that storage unit and things seem to be going great. We had a joint crossover in August gaining 1 new girl and 6 boys. Later, 3 more girls and 1 more boy joined. Then came time for spring OA ordeals with 3 girls troop candidates. Congratulations to the new OA members. We had a lot of service projects this year in both Troops: Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, 500 pairs of socks for senior citizens with United Way, Camp Rockfish Prayer Labyrinth cleanup, and the Urban Ministries work. We had several Eagle Scout service projects this year starting with Conner Ezzell’s project building 3 information kiosks for the Fayetteville Parks & Rec. (Continued on the next page)
Troop 740 B and G Continued Omar Hosein's project was a cleanup on the 5k nature trial and local area. Will Matthew's project was building a food closet for a non-profit organization. Will Pryzgoda’s project was building a Ga-Ga ball pit at HUMC. And finally, Cory Carpenter’s project built 2 sets of cornhole boards that will be donated to a non-profit charity fundraiser. Troop 740 Boys and Girls had a successful year of fundraising with the popcorn sales and Wreaths Across America fundraisers. And our final topic, rank advancement and merit badges. All of our scouts had a busy year with most gaining at least one rank up and at least one merit badge that goes for both the boys and girls. And with so many Eagle projects and multiple new Eagle Scouts, plus more Eagle Scout candidates on the way, I’m tempted to call this year “The Year of the Eagle” for Troop 740. Even with all of our struggles and obstacles that we had to overcome, this has been a great year for troop 740 and I feel that if I went around and asked all of our scouts most of them would say the same. It’s been hard but we did it. We have gained a lot of new experiences and learned a lot of lessons. We turned a “not so great year” into a good one because we all had each other to lean on if we needed support. I am glad I got to spend my 2020 with Troop 740.

Adult Ministries CareSharing – a time set aside for caregivers of family members to come together to share wisdom and knowledge, to talk and laugh and cry, and to know they are not alone in their daily challenges. • The group meets once a month in the Prayer Garden, weather-permitting, during COVID or on Zoom • The fourth Sunday of each month @ 2pm • If you are a caregiver or if you know of someone who could use Christian support please contact Dorothy.Funkhouser@Haymountumc.com Other ways for adults to connect…. Do you love to read books? Then why not join the Book Club? They meet on Zoom and choose various types of books to read together and discuss. Are you a grandparent who is seeking ways to guide your grandchildren toward a closer relationship with God? Then why not join the Grandparent Group? They meet on Zoom once a week. Join one of the Adult Sunday School Classes that meet at varying times and ways on Sundays. These groups study together and fellowship together, allowing each person to grow into a deeper relationship with our God. New Adam Hamilton Bible Study: Words of Life From cokesbury.com: In this book of Scripture and inspiration, bestselling author Adam Hamilton brings modern eyes to the most important set of ethics in history. He considers the commandments in their historical context, considering the meaning of each commandment in Hebrew, unpacking how Jesus reinterpreted them, and showing how every thou-shalt-not was intended to point to a life-giving "thou shalt." He also explores how the latest research in science and psychology illuminates these commandments, rightly understood, as a way of ordering one's life beautifully in the present day. You do not need to be a Scout, just someone who cares about grow ing our children and youth. You can do this in short-term sessions around your personal schedule. Books to guide the sessions is provided. You just need to complete an application. The * means that a special certification is require. Music Ministry News Dear Haymount UMC Family, It is early December, and I am listening to a virtual Christmas concert as I write our January newsletter. It is hard to imagine what the new year will bring. In 2021, we look forward to the completion of our beautiful pipe organ. I love seeing the pictures of the organ progress, and I am like a little child a Christmas waiting to open their gift. The trumpet en chamade is a wonderful addition to the instrument, and I can hardly wait to play it on Easter morning. My sincerest thanks to the members of the music ministry for working hard to make our Advent and Christmas music beautiful for our worship services.

Facilities Update By Rev. Donald M. Warren November and December were busy facility months for Haymount. The organ renovation project has continued, with the installation of the pipes at the rear of the sanctuary that make up our new trumpet en chamade rank. Fiber optic cables were run from beneath the organ console in the chancel through the sanctuary subfloor and all the way up to balcony to control these new pipes. Pipe organs operate using air compressed by a bellows to make the pipes sound. Haymount’s original Moeller organ has an operating wind pressure of 3 inches in organ technical measurements. The new trumpet division operates at a wind pressure of 16 inches. It is going to be very exciting to hear the sound produced by the en chamade rank with that much additional power! Renovations at the front of the sanctuary have continued as well. New hardwood flooring has been laid from the communion railing all the way to the reredos behind the altar. The existing hardwood flooring is undergoing repair and is being prepared for refinishing. The two disused radiators on either side of the altar have been removed and the wall plaster sealed. The sound of the choir in the sanctuary already shows terrific improvement with the carpet gone, and we look forward to hearing the difference its removal makes in the sound from our renovated organ when it is completed in the coming months. Disused radiators in the narthex were also removed. The gaps in the walls were filled and painted. This opened the way for the organ wiring to be run from the basement through the narthex and into the balcony. (See alspage 18)
Facilities Update The first-floor hallway walls have all been patched, mudded, and repainted. The women’s restroom in the New Life Center lobby has also been patched and freshly painted. Leaks around the cloister doors outside the fellowship hall were addressed, and the walls there have also been fixed and painted. We have been converting incandescent and fluorescent lighting to LED throughout the building. This is an ongoing process we will continue in 2021. The thermostats throughout the older part of the building have been replaced with Wi-Fi-enabled Ecobee programmable thermostats that can be controlled through a website and a smartphone app. Our new landscaping company started with first weekend in December, and we are looking forward to seeing their work unfold as Spring arrives and we can begin to reshape plants and address areas that need work.
