Liberals and Conservatives accuse one another of terrible things. People who have long been friends separate because they disagree so vehemently on social, religious, and political issues. Friends, let us be a force for healing in our little circle of church, family, and friends! Let us seek to live authentically with the new challenges we face, while also treating those who differ from us with respect and gentleness. Continued from Page 1 As we seek to walk in the humble love of Jesus Christ, we will be able to admit that we can learn something valuable from those who differ from us. We will be able to place love of neighbor above politics and above theology, for a theology that puts correctness above kindness is the theology of the Pharisees. This is certainly not to say that correctness doesn’t matter, but truth divorced from love is demonic. Like you, I treasure Christ's summation of all scripture in three commandments: love God, love your neighbor, and love your fellow disciples. A love of God which leads us to contempt of neighbor is out of focus; it of not of God, but of the other. And so we enter this new decade with new opportunities for growth and maturity in our love for God and neighbor. I rejoice that the good people of Haymount Church have a long history of showing the world exactly what that looks like. Bread 'n' Bowls Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch will host a bake sale and silent Auction in the New Life Center on Friday, February 8 from 11:00am - 2:00pm. Brunch/Lunch will also be served during this time. You may choose dine in or take out from a variety of items. Youth Choir News On November 22 and 23, Haymount UMC was represented at the annual Youth Choir Jam in Richmond, VA, by Georgia Ross, Adam Courter, and Samuel Davis. Our students participated in workshop rehearsals with Dr. Mark Miller on Friday and Saturday, and they performed in the mass choir concert on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Lisa Courter for chaperoning this trip and volunteering in the kitchen, and to both Lisa Courter and Paige Ross for being drivers!

Preschool Registration 2020-2021 Preschool Registration for the 2020-2021 school year will open to current students/siblings and church members on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Registration begins at 8:30 am in the Preschool Lobby. There is a $100 Registration Fee ($75 per additional child). The Registration Form is on the church website (www.haymountumc.com). Feel free to print and complete to bring it with you on Wednesday, January 29. Call the Preschool Office with any questions at 910-484-5646. Registration opens to the public on February 24, 2020. We accept infants (12 weeks) through four year olds. Morning program with Lunch Bunch option and weekly resource classes of P.E. and Music/Chapel.
Church Music and Christian Worhsip The Westminster Catechism teaches young believers that “the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” The Church, the Body of Christ on earth, seeks to proclaim the gospel, to advocate for the poor and the oppressed, and to struggle for justice so that life on Earth now is reflective of life in the coming Reign of God. The United Methodist Church defines its mission as “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” For the people called Methodist, singing has always been a central way of training and making disciples. One of the most powerful tools adopted by the Church to help facilitate worship and singing, is the pipe organ. For centuries, the organ has been used to lead the liturgy, or “the work of the people.” In the Church, the primary “work of the people” is the glorification of God and the making of disciples. The pipe organ is uniquely suited to this task. What makes a pipe organ unique? Each pipe organ is designed individually, making it unlike every other organ. The voice of every organ is different and unique. Each organ has its own character and “personality.” Digital and electronic organs are mass-produced commodities and are designed to emulate the sound of pipe organs. Each electronic organ sounds exactly like every other electronic organ produced in its series.
Continued from Page 9 Why not use an electronic organ? A pipe organ produces sound by creating a vibrating column of air inside each individual pipe. A pipe organ has thousands of pipes. The vibrations from every pipe can be both heard and felt within the worship space. By contrast, an electronic organ produces sound by generating electrical impulses within a set of loudspeakers. Although there is some vibration within the speaker as the electrical impulses are converted to sound waves, it is miniscule. An electronic organ produces very little “feeling,” and is instead attempting to electronically replicate sound only. What does this mean? While people may say that a good electronic organ sounds “like” a pipe organ, what they are not taking into account is the “feeling” that a pipe organ generates. The “power” conveyed by a pipe organ comes from its ability to actually vibrate the air within a worship space. An electronic organ does not and cannot have this ability because of the differences in how the sound is produced. Haymount UMC is very fortunate to have a large M. P. Möller pipe organ that was built in the 1970’s. Möller Organ Company built some of the most famous organs in the United States, including the organs in the Cadet Chapel at West Point, the Air Force Academy chapel, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and St. Paul the Apostle Church in New York City. The cost to build a comparable organ today would exceed $1 million. Haymount’s organ is an irreplaceable asset that should be maintained, guarded, and treasured. All pipe organs require routine maintenance to keep them in top condition. Many of the components around the pipes that control and supply the flow of air are made of leather. This leather naturally breaks down over time as it ages and must be replaced. The working components of an organ can be expected to last about 50 years before an overhaul becomes necessary. Haymount’s organ is nearing the fifty-year mark, and so the time has come for its major maintenance. Since these major maintenance overhauls have a useful life of about 50 years, that means a financial investment of about $5,000 per year over the life of the overhaul, or about $420 per month. So, for about the price of a monthly car payment, Haymount can have its magnificent Möller organ in excellent working condition for decades to come. Haymount has a designated organ fund available for members who would like to make contributions directly to the repair and upkeep of the organ.
