Happy Fall! We have many good things to celebrate and enjoy, which you will see as you read this month’s Happenings. Sometimes the October sermons have a stewardship theme, but this year will be a little different. The sermons will continue with our study of the book of Ephesians which concludes on October 17. October 24 will focus on the peace and joy of realizing we have “enough.” October 31 will be a special day. It is Consecration Sunday.
We will offer our individual Estimates of Giving for 2022 and have a special meal. The Reverend Beth Hood will be our guest preacher. Beth is the Assistant to the Bishop for Ministerial Relations. She is a great preacher, and I am also proud to say she is my first cousin! Dr. John

Consecration Sunday is Coming Dear Friends, Consecration Sunday is scheduled for October 31. Join us for Sunday school, worship and a meal following the 11:00 service. In the weeks leading up to this celebration, you will hear from church leaders about why they give and ways you can give. Be on the lookout for letters, emails, and announcements from the pulpit. Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s missions and ministry with a percentage of their income. We believe followers of Jesus Christ who choose to return a portion of what God has given them to the church do so as an act of discipleship. During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world by returning their Estimate of Giving card. Please pray about what God is calling you to give. Thank you for your faith and love in Jesus Christ, and your support of Haymount United Methodist Church.

HUMC Endowment Program in Action Haymount United Methodist Church is blessed in so many ways - one special way includes the loving gifts received for the creation of Endowment Funds for the church. Proceeds from interest are available each year to be used per the stated purpose of each fund. The results of our Endowment Program are so exciting! Since it began at HUMC in 1987 with the Marlin Steward Scholarship Endowment Fund, our fund distributions have totaled more than $130,000 to enhance our church, programs, and outreach. Examples of programs, services, and maintenance these endowment funds provided this past year: • • • • • • • • • •

A Word About Volunteers In the springtime my sister from Vermont was visiting, and as usual we went on our typical walk through my garden, talking about plants and flower beds. As we were surveying my front flower bed that I had just built, I pointed out the thriving Vincas that were blooming in the seams outside the bed. "Oh, volunteers," she said. I had never heard that term used before for flowers that "voluntarily" pop up where they weren't planted. My head went dizzy as I thought of the image of volunteers in the life of our church, of those people who willlingly pop up and bloom, who make everything seem so much more beautiful than if they were not there. Of course, in the life of a church, we are not volunteers, but part of the Body of Christ - we are the servants of our Lord, but that giving, that popping up in places unexpected and making ministries beautiful and thriving, is such a beautiful and touching image. We have so many in our congregation who bring color and vibrancy to so many of the ministries at Haymount Church. I praise God for each one of you. May you continue to grow and bloom where God plants you, and may you take into yourself the blessings from our Father in Heaven and from your brothers and sisters in Christ. Shalom! - Dorothy

What Is Your Sunday Routine? How about adding in a Sunday School class from 10:0010:50am?? There is something for everyone! For Adults: • Barrington Bible Class – A structured, lecture-style class which uses the Adult Bible Study Series. The Barrington Class enjoys fellowship, projects, and caring for one another. All adults are welcome. Meets in the Fellowship Hall, Room 101. • Bergland Class – A positive element of this class is the range of perspectives. This is a class bound by the spirit of Christ-centeredness, which generates both a concern for each other and for the larger church. Meets in the Commons Room, 118. • Magnolia Class – This class uses the Adult Bible Study Series to allow participants to grow stronger in living out their faith. Single and married adults of all ages are represented. Meets in Room 213. • Pilgrimage Class – A diverse and contemporary Bible study group that strives to explore and understand God’s Word through study and discussion. All adults welcome. Meets in Room 215. • TrueFaith Class – This class uses Bible Scripture, modern teaching materials, and personal experiences to build a Christian covenant between its members. All couples and singles welcome. Meets in Room 217. • The Word of Life Class – The “Word” is the primary focus of this class with a Christ-centered, Scripture-based discussion format. Meets in Room 224. • Young Adult Class – For 20- and 30-somethings, this class will delve into the Scriptures, and through discussion strive to understand its teachings and applications to our busy and full lives today. Meets in Room 222. For Youth: • Youth Sunday School – For 6th12th Graders, a time to dig into Scriptures and talk about applications in today’s world. Taught by the Youth Pastor, Drew Ellis. October is Going to be Awesome! Last month we had a great start to our school year ECHO meetings! I just wanted to say again to the new faces, returning faces, and all those who come weekly, “Welcome to youth group!” In the month of September we were able to learn more about community, belonging, and helping others through our faith in Jesus. Our missional opportunity was to put together Teacher Appreciation bags for Terry Sanford High and Alma Easom Elementary Schools. October will be full of other missional opportunities. Check the calendar below! Entering into the month of October means we will be in full swing! Words From Andrew Dear Friends, As the Fall kicks in and we start to get back into our regular schedules, I pray you are doing well. To our online folks, I hope you have been enjoying your viewing experience since we have gotten our new video and sound equipment. With COVID still very much a part of our lives, our focus on technology and bringing Church to you is not waning and is, in fact, growing. With new equipment comes the need for more people to operate it. The Lord has been gracious in sending me volunteers with a heart to serve. I want to invite you to pray to the Lord and meditate on how God wants you to serve His Church. We are the body of Christ and to do His great work which He has commissioned us to do we must be in fervent prayer about this. Youth Handbells Youth handbells are meeting for weekly rehearsals on Sundays from 4:45pm-5:30pm. This fun group will be under the direction of Rev. Donald Warren. Argo/Aycock Concert Series The "Argo/Aycock Concert Series” for Music at Haymount has it’s kick off concert in October. This concert series is partially funded by generous donations from you and The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. In our first concert, we welcome the members of the Fayetteville-Sandhills Chapter of the American Guild of Organists to perform on our newly renovated organ. Children and adults are welcome to attend this family friendly concert. We welcome friendly costumes, and there will be “Trick or Treat” candy.
