Continued Many are in good shape. The pan demic has created some financial challenges for the Church. For the first couple of months, giving remained normal. But as the pandemic dragged on, giving flagged. September was particularly difficult, with expenses exceeding giving by more than 50%. I’d like to thank everyone who came to the Prayer Vigil October 23-24, and everyone who returned an Estimate of Giving Card. Your prayers and your sacrificial giving will ensure that when the pandemic is over, your Church will still be vibrant and brimming with ministry for everyone. If you have not yet returned your Estimate of Giving card, please do. Extras are available at Church, or if the post office didn’t deliver yours, just call and we’ll mail you another. Our Finance Committee is working hard to put together a 2021 spending plan that will enable us to do all the things that make The Haymount United Methodist Church a source of life and joy and healing for so many. But just now it is difficult, and we need your help. Worshipping Online Until just a few months ago, online worship did not seem very important. Our equipment and expertise for producing it were not very good, but that was okay because it was not used widely. Oh, how things have changed! Approximately half of our congregation now worships online, but we still have outdated equipment. We have good news on this front. Our Sanctuary Acoustics Committee has been working assiduously, and we hope to have new equipment installed within the next couple of months. Meanwhile, please stay close and join with us online or in person each week. We need to feel your heart beating as one with ours.

Our 75th Anniversary 2020 is our 75th Anniversary, and we had so many wonderful things planned throughout the year! Each was cancelled, one at the time, as we waited for the pandemic to run its course. Finally, and reluctantly, the decision was made to simply wait and celebrate next year when we can do so in grand Haymount style. The celebrations are not cancelled, they have just been moved forward by one year. (Continued on Page 3)

From the Pastor Part of the 75th Anniversary celebration is the rebuilding of the Moeller Organ and the installation of a new rank of trumpets. This is going to be glorious! However, this project has been delayed. Because of the pandemic, the organ builder has been unable to get some of the necessary components. At this time, the hope is that the organ will be done by Christmas. The good news is that it will be here within the next few months, and we will enjoy it for many decades to come. Meanwhile, we have so much to celebrate and to enjoy. All Saints Sunday (November 1) is always a highlight, and Thanksgiving follows closely on its heels. The Sunday after Thanksgiving begins our Advent celebrations, and then it will be Christmastime. I look forward to sharing all of this with you either in person or virtually. We have many good things prepared! A Christmas to Remember Haymount’s annual tradition of a Christmas to Remember is the way we honor the Christ child with a birthday gift! It is a gift that delights our Lord because it is a gift that demonstrates our love for others. John 15:12 tells us, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." Jesus loves us in such an extraordinary, incredible way. It is up to us to take the love we receive from him and find ways to bring that love and goodwill into our world. This year’s recipients are Fayetteville Urban Ministry and a well project in Rwanda, which is a special project of a Methodist University student. Fayetteville Urban Ministry is an important part of our community. It was oganized in 1974 at Hay Street Methodist Church as a project of the Fayetteville District. The initial ministry was to provide emergency assistance to people in need of food, clothing, and other resources. Since that time, they have added an adult literacy program, the Nehemiah project for home repair and Find-A- Friend for at risk youth. Today they are a community assistance and outreach organization that serves over 10,000 people a year at no cost to their clients. Fred Kitaye came to Methodist University as a Davis United World College Scholar from Rwanda. The Davis UWC Scholars Program and their scholars are committed to building cross-cultural understanding across U.S. campuses and ultimately throughout the world in this century. Fred is in his senior year at Methodist University and is the current president of the student body. Projects for Peace is an initiative open to all students at the partner schools of the Davis UWC Scholars Program. Students design grassroots, summer projects—anywhere in the world—which promote peace and address the root causes of conflict. Applicants are encouraged to be creative in their project design and to use innovative techniques that focus on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding, and breaking down barriers that cause conflict, and to find solutions for resolving conflict and maintaining peace. A Christmas to Remember Applicants are encouraged to be creative in their project design and to use innovative techniques that focus on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding, and breaking down barriers that cause conflict, and to find solutions for resolving conflict and maintaining peace. Through a competition on over 90 campuses, selected projects each receive $10,000 in funding. Fred proposed a well project in his home community which has received one of these project grants. He is working with Water Access Rwanda and hopes to build up to three additional wells in neighboring communities with a Christmas to Remember gift. You will hear more about these two projects during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Gifts will be shared between the two or you can designate your gift towards one of the two projects. Thank you for sharing in this most special Haymount Christmas tradition. You will be blessed!

What’s Happening for Kids, You Ask??? Sunday morning in-person worship services – we’ve got activity bags for all the children; while they listen to the music, the prayers, the creeds, and the sermon, their little hands can be busy. We love kids in worship, for they are a huge part of the family of God!! Kids Worship on-line at 10am each Sunday morning – all children, 4-years-old and older are invited to participate in on-line worship, where we sing a lot of songs, share prayer concerns, pray together, and learn about our God revealed through Jesus Christ and how much He loves us and cares for us. Outdoor LIGHT in-person at 4pm each Sunday – all kids, K-5th Grades gather together to fellowship (play), enjoy snacks and conversation, and learn about children from around the world and pray for them. So far, we have learned about the children in Djibouti, Afghanistan, and Iran. We also do several mission projects throughout the year. Here's a new mission project we will work on in November – we are collecting food items to replenish the food supply at Urban Ministries. You can donate on Sunday mornings at the 9:45 service or at the 11:00 service (bins will be visible in the foyer and Narthex), or you can come “Fill the Vans” at 3pm when the children meet (they will fill the vans for you as you deliver the food items. Here is what you can bring and when: November 8th – Canned vegetables November 15th – Instant stuffing or instant potatoes (that do not require additional ingredients) November 22nd – Canned meats Help the children help our neighbors! Outdoor Mid-Week Kid Time on Wednesdays at 4:30-5:30pm – for kids K-5th Grades who come together to fellowship (play) and pray. All children are invited to be part of these ministries – and yes, FRIENDS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO JOIN US!!!
Coming in 2021 – Small Groups called Growth Groups! Look out for the opportunity to join a small group that will focus on God’s Word, making new friends that are committed to being followers of Jesus Christ, who learn and serve together. More information will be out in January. Advent Study with the Book Club, On-line Incarnation, by Adam Hamilton Wednesdays @ 2:30pm via Zoom, beginning December 2nd. Once a week each college student receives via text message a Scripture reading and brief devotional from our Higher Education Coordinator, Ashley Taylor. They also receive a love packet around exam time, one that includes hand-written words of encouragement on a beautiful card and two gift cards – one to Dunkin Donuts and one to Chick-fil-A. A huge shout-out to Ashely for her ministry. Please keep our college students in your prayers. HUMC Preschool Update Our preschool has been open since September, and the children are thriving under the nurture and teaching of our amazing preschool teachers and the leadership of our director, Eileen Hatch. Please keep these children in your prayers as they grow in their love for Jesus Christ, and pray for our teachers and Eileen as they continue to minister to these little ones.

Pilgrimage 2020 Pilgrimage is happening virtually this year from November 13-15. This event is for youth in 6th-12th grade and those parents and leaders who wish to attend. This year’s theme is “You Are Claimed!” and we will be reminded of our identity in Christ and how we go out into the world to do God’s work. Registration is open on nccpilgrimage.org and costs $15 a person. We will meet at the church for fellowship and games on Saturday between sessions. Haymount United Methodist Church Music Ministry Dear Haymount UMC Family, Fall is my favorite time of year. I love when the fall weather arrives, and the anticipation of Thanksgiving and the Advent/Christmas season. This year has provided many changes in ministry and worship, especially musically. One major change is the absence of our beautiful Möller Pipe Organ, and I know you anxiously await its return to worship. Lewtak Organ Builders sent a few beautiful pictures that I want to share with you. Calling all instrumentalists - The chancel choir has several anthems coming up that require instrumental accompaniment. If you are an instrumentalist, especially if you are violinist, please contact me at monicasparzak@haymountumc.com WANTED: Were you a member of this choir? Do you miss singing in service? If you were a member of this choir, then I know that you can sing. Please consider joining the Chancel Choir. We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 6:00pm-7:30pm.
