Dear Haymount’s Family, As of this writing on May 1, we don’t know when we will be able to gather in person. Can we just go back to “business as usual” as if nothing ever happened? In some ways, the wonderful answer is, “Yes we can!” That will feel so good! And yet in other ways, this time will have made us better.
For Worship, we will install hand sanitizer, and change some of the details of how we celebrate the Holy Communion. The worship team will be working on that. For a while there may be fewer handshakes, and a little more space between us. But it will be wonderful to be together. We will begin a new Leadership Project with 12 people, who will meet together for 8 hours per month for one year. This group will be nominated by you, the laity. (Continued on next page)

Pastoral Message Continued Those with the most nominations will be invited to apply to be in this Leadership Project, and the team of 12 will be assembled from the applications. This group will give us leadership as we discern where God is leading us in this new decade. The group will have no administrative authority, but will act like leaven in the dough of our congregation. So be thinking of three people whom you see as “spiritual leaders” in our church. I’m going to ask you to write down their names anonymously on our first Sunday back. Celebrations of our 75th Anniversary are being planned. This includes a dance on October 9 with a DJ, and dance lessons in the summer for those who want to cut a rug. We plan to “Dance the Decades!” (Can anybody still Jitterbug?) We are also planning an organ recital in December so we can share our beautifully renovated and enlarged organ with the community. By the way, the renovation is progressing very well. Meanwhile, our staff and members have been extremely active in ministry to senior citizens, families, youth and children. And your financial giving has been so faithful. Thank you. You may have heard that General Conference, which was supposed to meet in May, has been postponed to 2021. Regardless of General Conference, we all know that Haymount Church loves, and is open to, everyone in our community. But regardless of decisions made at General Conference, same sex weddings will not take place at Haymount Church because this would run counter to the beliefs of our congregational leadership. Pastoral Message Continued Neither will LGBTQ pastors be appointed to Haymount because of the consultative process in appointment making; put another way, a pastor with whom our leadership was uncomfortable would not be appointed here. It is just that simple. We don’t need General Conference to tell us any of that. If you would like to talk about any of these things, feel free to connect with me. May is Teacher Appreciation Month Haymount UMC is blessed with many passionate and gifted teachers and leaders in our classes and small groups, all committed to equipping God's people through the study of Scripture and its relevance to our lives today. We celebrate their ministry with them this month. Thank you, Sunday School teachers for all age groups and thank you group leaders! We could not be church without you!! We also recognize and give a shout-out to the teachers and school administrators who are in our church family and work in the Fayetteville community.
Comfort in Troubling Times May 3 A Trustworthy Guide Dr. Elizabeth Tyson John 10:1-10, Psalm 23 When we are in familiar territory, we don’t need a guide. We are fine on our own, with a friend to share the journey. But when we are in unknown territory, a trusted guide makes all the difference. Sometimes life takes us through unknown territory, and we need Jesus to be our guide. May 10 A Place Just For You Mother’s Day John 14:1-14 One of the wonderful things about mothers is the way they make a home for their families. This requires a lot of love and a lot of effort because home is not a “one-size-fits-all” proposition. Each of us has a need and desires as unique as we are. Jesus says he is preparing a place for each of us, which will fit us just right. Wonder what that might be like? May 17 A Powerful Friend John 14:15-21 It is nice to have a powerful friend. One who can write a recommendation that gets your kid into the school she wanted; one who puts in a word with the boss to get the job you wanted; one who has a beach house and likes to share. Jesus tells us he is sending us a powerful friend unlike any other. What a huge blessing! May 24 A Fulfilled Plan Ascension Sunday Luke 24:44-53 How much of Jesus’ life was random, and how much was planned? I don’t have an answer for that, but I am amazed at how much seemed random, but wasn’t. The birth in a stable in Bethlehem? Not random! The lying priests and cowardly kings who had Jesus executed? Not random! The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead? Definitely not random! Then, just to put a cherry on everything, Jesus ascends into heaven and gives the Church her marching orders. It’s as if Jesus is saying, “See how I did it? Now it’s your turn!” May 31 A New Life John 20:19-23 and Acts 2 Christianity is not just about living by God’s rules. It is about living in union with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is Jesus Christ living inside of you. That is powerful!

May is Christian Home Month Tips for better family time during Christian Home Month Originally published May 13, 2019 at www.umc.org
Family Devotion Prepare a gathering place for family worship. Create a centerpiece on the table where you eat your meals or in another area of your home where you can gather as a family. Include a candle, the words "Love God, Love Others" written and placed next to the candle, and items that remind you of God. During your time of devotions, follow this worship sequence: • •
Praise: Praise God with a song, or simply start your time saying together, "We Praise God." Prayer: Use a family prayer or say the Lord's Prayer. Hold hands as you pray. (Continued on back page)

May is Christian Home Month Continued • Reading: Read a Scripture passage of your choice, a short devotional passage from The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guide, or another devotion of your choice. • Reflection: Ask each person to answer different questions about the reading. • Sharing: Family members share joys, concerns, and prayers for themselves and others. • Blessing: Use a hymn such as the "Doxology" or "Blest Be the Tie that Binds" to end your time together. Family Night Set aside a regular time for sharing family fun activities together. Loving Others Each month, make cards together to send to those who need to know God's love; or, as a family, visit someone from your church or your community who is alone and needs to know there are those who care about him or her. Learn About People Who May Be Persecuted By Others As a family, decide on actions that you might take, such as: visiting in houses of worship different from your own, writing to officials, or joining others in your community to provide food or clothing to those hurt by hateful actions. Refrigerator Reminders Post on the refrigerator a Scripture passage, a line from a hymn or song, an inspirational thought, or a brief prayer. Change the reminder each Saturday. Scripture / Prayer / Thought-for-the-Day Cards Buy a spiral notebook of index cards; write a favorite Scripture verse, short prayer, or thought for the day about love on each card. Establish a Family Covenant for Love This covenant can be renewed every three months; however, the basic elements of the covenant stay intact. The promise of love, forgiveness, acceptance, truthfulness, growth, and witness is the basis of the covenant. This leads to peaceful family living.
