Welcome to Summer! It feels good to be in “Phase 2” doesn’t it? Three or four friends popped by for a glass of lemonade in our shady back yard over Memorial Day weekend. It felt so good to be with friends! Outside, there was plenty of social connection and social distance.

Our Bishop is also asking us to wait until Phase 3 for in-person worship. Our Church Council met on Thursday, May 21 and unanimously decided that we would continue in Phase 2 as we have been in Phase 1. Stephen Ministry Training Your Stephen Ministry Needs You! Training Class Beginning in the Fall The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of so many things. No longer are we able to hug one another in hard times, let alone violate social distancing rules. We live in isolation from friends and family. No more social get-togethers. We greet each other with masks over our faces. We can’t find toilet paper or hand sanitizer at the store. Right now, no longer can we gather with good friends and relatives to grieve in person the loss of a loved one. We can’t even visit our relatives in the hospital. Activities we used to enjoy are clearly missing. Relentless waves from the loss of current employment or business opportunities for our selves or our friends, worry about our family (including us) getting physically sick, concern and being overwhelmed about our children’s schooling now and in the future, self-enforced social isolation, including the inability to worship together as a group, all compound the original stressors we had been facing before the appearance of this unwanted virus. The virus related issues will not vanish in the short term, and the original problems facing people will continue to be present. It is no wonder that some of us are having a difficult time right now. The need for support that can be offered by a trained Stephen Minister, to be there and walk with people through these troubled times providing Christian support and care, is great. We, therefore will be offering Stephen Minister training this Fall. Please strongly consider whether you feel the call to be a part of this Ministry. More detailed information about the training will follow. HUMC Overseas Mission Update Haymount provides salary support for 3 missionaries. Mozart Adevu, who works in sustainable agriculture in Ghana and surrounding nations; Lynn and Sharon Fogleman, medical missionaries who work in a number of countries in Africa; and one other. Until recently, we supported Mary Zigbuo, who worked at Ghanta Mission Station in Liberia, and also at GBGM in NY, NY. Mary retires this year, and the Missions/Outreach committee has chosen Ellyn Dubberly to be our 3rd missionary. Ellyn is serving in El Salvador. Dubberly, Ellyn Benson Advance # 3021818 Serving At: Evangelical Methodist Church in El Salvador Home Country: United States of America, N. America Ellyn Benson Dubberly is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as leadership development coordinator of the Evangelical Methodist Church in El Salvador. She was commissioned in June 2013. The Evangelical Methodist Church of El Salvador is a young community of slightly more than 1,000 members, of whom half are children. It also has many young adult participants. El Salvador has gone through a great deal of social upheaval in recent years, but its resourceful, resilient people are reconstructing a country committed to human rights, health, and economic prosperity. Through it's programs and projects, the Methodist Church has become an expression of social conscience. Ellyn is a native of North Carolina, where she is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount in the North Carolina Annual Conference. She received a Bachelor of Social Work from Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, and a master’s degree in Christian Education from Pfeiffer University, Charlotte, in 2011. She also holds a United Methodist certification in Chrisitan education and children’s ministry. Ellyn has worked as a pre-kindergarten teacher, and from 2005 to 2013 was director of children’s ministries at her church in Rocky Mount.
