‘Drawing The Journey’
Altes is a visual artist of French and Spanish origin, currently based in the UK. Born in Algeria shortly before it became independent, the young artist found himself as part of an exodus towards France. As a result his art now explores ideas of identity fragmented, making connections between written histories and how we construct ourselves accordingly.
Drawing on his own experiences of diaspora and the difficult circumstances associated with it, Altes’ work explores the uncomfortable notion of birthright, and our shifting and ambivalent attitudes about belonging, dispossession and migration. These themes are often told through biblical imagery- such as the exile from the Garden of Eden, the captivity in Egypt or the parting of the Red Sea. These narrative metaphors form the basis for a new reality that can liberate us from the past.
Following the science of genetic mapping is a way in which we may reveal to ourselves the imprint of our evolutionary nomadism - it creates an internal atlas, which is beyond control, regulation and censorship. Whilst the ties that bind us to place may have long been severed, we can still romanticise, idealise and fear the loss of a sense of belonging there.
