Musical trends have come and gone, but Kalapana’s many hits have remained Island classics. Kalapana still stands as a symbol of inspiration for contemporary Hawaiian music today. Kalapana emerged as one of the most popular bands on the Hawaiian music scene in the 70s, producing a steady stream of hits. Their 1975 debut album was hailed as one of the best of the mid-70s Hawaiian renaissance. Tracks like “Naturally,” “Nightbird,” “The Hurt,” “You Make It Hard,” and “When the Morning Comes” became household tunes and still enjoy frequent play on contemporary Hawaiian radio. Message from the Maestro Dear Class of 2015:

W

hen I think of this year, I will remember the legacy that you are leaving behind. You all have set a new standard for performance, be it in CO, YSII, or YSI. The overall orchestra is only as good as your individual commitment to it. This year, perhaps because it is our 50th Anniversary, you took tremendous pride in what you did. You practiced, you persevered. You weren’t content to let things stay the same. Your individual improvement resulted in collective growth. You were authentic in what you desired. The enthusiasm you played with was better than I heard in the past. There was more pizzazz this year—a collective individual paradigm. The future for the organization, and where we’re headed to, is made possible by your commitment to collective growth within the orchestras. I am proud of this legacy, which you have left for HYS, and which will be handed down from past to present. I am also proud of you, each of you, for the growth you have made. About Hawaii Youth Symphony

awaii Youth Symphony (HYS) has connected Hawaii’s young people with music education since its incorporation in 1964. We are the only statewide youth music education program, directly serving an average of 650 students, ages 7–18, from over 100 schools statewide. Our mission is to advance critical and positive links between music study, academic achievement, and social emotional development with programs that service youth through orchestral music education, performance opportunities, and community engagement. HYS is able to strategically serve any interested student, regardless of previous musical background or ability. We distribute $30,000 annually in scholarship, financial aid, and travel assistance (for neighbor island students). Additionally, HYS reaches neighbor island communities with annual outreach tours that target a different island each season. In total, 20,000+ people attend our 24+ concerts each season!

en Gutierrez is a general assignment reporter and weather anchor for Hawaii News Now (KFVE/ KGMB/KHNL). His musical talent is generally limited to the backyard variety, but on rare occasions he has been allowed to perform music on stage. He recently was elected to the Board of Governors of the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts, home of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards. He’s also a member of the National Weather Association and ASCAP, and is a proud supporter of Hawaii Youth Symphony.

Guest Artist ROBERT CAZIMERO

I

n the 1970’s, Robert Cazimero was instrumental in the resurgence of Hawaiian music and culture. That resurgence began a career that almost thirty years later is stronger than ever. Musician, composer, kumu hula...his work in all of these areas is wellknown throughout the world. His incomparable elegant voice is distinctive, whether he performs solo on piano or with his brother, Roland as The Brothers Cazimero. Recording has played an important part of Robert’s career, and he has collectively (as The Brothers Cazimero) and individually released over thirty albums over the past three decades. The success of these recording projects can easily be measured by the fact that they all remain on the market. Fans of Robert and The Brothers Cazimero boast of a complete collection of CDs and tapes. Not only do residents of Hawai‘i find that this music has magical qualities, but visitors to these islands will take home multiple copies to use for relaxation as they get back in everyday routines, give to friends and relatives and as living souvenirs of their vacation to this island paradise. National television credits include the Today show, PM Magazine, Good Morning America, Real People, Jim Nabors Special from Hawai‘i, the Miss America Pageant and the Dolly Parton TV special from Hawai‘i. A prolific composer, many of Robert’s compositions (such a “Pane Mai,” “My Sweet Pīkake Lei” and “E Ku‘u Lei”) have become classics and been performed by numerous musicians. Robert Cazimero is one of the most respected kumu (teacher) of Hawaiian dance today, and his dancers, the men of Nā Kamalei, appear with The Brothers Cazimero around the world. Hawai‘i’s popularity as a vacation destination has brought Hawaiian music beyond her shores, and the popularity of this ethnic brand of music has allowed Robert to perform in locales such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the World Expo in Brisbane, Australia, Hong Kong, Tokyo; and annually in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle to sell out crowds. The many talents of Robert Cazimero have established him as a benchmark in Hawaiian music and culture.

Youth Symphony I HENRY MIYAMURA, Conductor & HYS Music Director

H

enry Miyamura, conducts Hawaii Youth Symphony’s top orchestra, Youth Symphony I, and has been HYS’s music director and conductor for nearly three decades. Joining HYS in the early ’80s, Maestro Miyamura provided the artistic vision that has shaped HYS’s programs and led to tremendous growth of the organization. Miyamura also founded and directs HYS’s summer program, the prestigious Pacific Music Institute. Maestro Miyamura recently retired from the University of Hawaii, where he conducted the UH Symphony Orchestra. His numerous credits include 14 years as band director at McKinley High School; principal clarinetist with the Honolulu Symphony; and membership in the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Hillel Chamber Concert Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic. Miyamura also served as assistant conductor for the Honolulu Symphony, which gave him the opportunity to conduct concerts featuring artists such as Wynton Marsalis, trumpet; David Bar-Ilan, piano; Joshua Bell, violin; and Harvey Pittel, saxophone, as well as Hawaii entertainers. Miyamura was named winner of the prestigious 2001 Alfred Preis Award by the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education for his lifetime commitment to arts and education in Hawaii. Miyamura received a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a Master of Music degree from Western Washington University.

About Youth Symphony I Youth Symphony I is the most advanced of HYS’s seven orchestras, and is one of the finest youth symphonies in the country. Youth Symphony I is comprised this year of 101 students from 26 schools on Oahu and Maui. Brent Ramos, a senior at Moanalua High School, is this season’s concertmaster. HAWAII YOUTH SYMPHONY

Youth Symphony II DERRICK YAMANE, Conductor

D

errick Yamane received both his Master of Secondary Education and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. A retired music teacher, he has taught music at various public and private schools on Oahu since 1971. Eleven of those years were also spent as HYS’s Concert Orchestra Conductor. He credits Mr. Hajime Kuwada, his mentor, and Mr. James Uyeda, his inspiration, for encouraging him to pursue music as a profession. He has appeared as guest conductor of the Colorado All-State Honor Band (Gunnison), Oahu Band Director’s 8th Grade Select Band, and Maui District Massed and Select Band. Mr. Yamane is a lifetime member of the Oahu Band Director’s Association, Music Educators National Conference and the Hawaii Music Educators Association.

ELTON MASAKI, Assistant Conductor

E

lton Masaki holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in music from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a Master of Music in Education degree from Boston University. He is currently working on a PhD in Education with an emphasis in technology from the University of Hawaii. Mr. Masaki is the orchestra director at Mid-Pacific Institute where he has been conducting since 2005. He has also taught orchestra at Kamehameha Schools, Iolani School and the Hawaii Youth Symphony Academy String Program. Mr. Masaki also serves as an orchestra clinician for a number of different camps and workshops and manages his own string quartet. Professional affiliations include American String Teacher Association and Association for Education and Communication Technology.

HYS Class of 2015 Misa Akiyama Youth Symphony I, Violin / Kalani High School

T

hese past five years in the violin section in HYS has been such a memorable experience. I started playing the violin in my school orchestra, not knowing anything about music in sixth grade. As I practiced more, I started to love playing music. I’ve been a part of HYS since eighth grade, starting as a member of YSII and then to YSI for four years. Throughout this program, I was able to meet many outstanding musicians, develop the skills and attitude needed as a musician, and also create wonderful friendships with the orchestra. It has been such a privilege for me to be a part of this program and I am thankful for the many memories and knowledge I have gained here. Aside from HYS, I participate in many school clubs such as NHS, president of Interact Club, secretary of HOSA, and many volunteering/internship programs. I have also been a four-year marcher of Kalani HS Falcons Marching Band as Color Guard. I am forever thankful to all HYS staff especially Mr. Yamane, Mr. Miyamura, my violin teacher Mrs. Mariko Yuen, Kalani Orchestra director Mr. Daniel Akemoto, and band director Mr. Dennis Kaneshiro for their continuous support and dedication in providing a wonderful music experience. This fall, I plan to major in biology at a four-year university and hopefully continue playing the violin there.

Cuyler Bleecker Youth Symphony I, Bass / Kaiser High School

Y

outh Symphony was as much of a challenge for me as it was a blessing to participate in. As bass players, we don’t often get the most challenging parts to play, but in YSI, this was frequently not the case. As a result I had to work a lot harder and I think grew a lot as a musician and a person. It is a big responsibility, because everything you do in a symphony affects the way the orchestra sounds. Youth Symphony was a lot of fun too and I’m going to miss everybody I’ve gotten to know and I will miss the wonderful feeling of playing in a large orchestra. Aside from bass and music, I swim competitively for Kaiser’s swim team. I love to do fine art in all mediums and I write and illustrate for the school newspaper. I will be attending UH Manoa to pursue a career in the field of biology, and hope to continue playing bass in the UH Orchestra.

Yun Chang YSI, Violin / Punahou School

P

laying violin in YSI for the past four years has been a collection of nervous, fun, and inspiring moments. The long rehearsals with my great musician friends and Mr. Henry Miyamura's speeches about music and reaching beyond, beyond the highest standards of playing, will be forever in my memory. I am forever thankful to Mr. Miyamura, my school orchestra directors Mr. Craig Young and Dr. Jonas Carlson, and my teachers Dr. Thomas Yee and Mr. Iggy Jang for all the music and life lessons. I am getting to know music better and I am thankful for the opportunity and preparation they gave me to communicate with people. I wish to continue playing music and reaching people for the rest of my life. Aside from playing in the Youth Symphony, I also play the piano and participated in MTNA and Aloha piano festival piano competitions, and this year I was privileged to perform with YSI and the Punahou Symphony. At Punahou, I am on the math team and in the music club, and I am also a math tutor and a physics TA. I will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall and will major in engineering.

Eileen Chen Youth Symphony I, Cello / Iolani School

E

ileen Chen has been a part of HYS for more than half of her life. She fell in love with the cello in second grade and began her orchestral experience in Beginning Strings, or what she likes to call Baby Strings. Through her four years in YSI, she has never gotten tired of the airport security and her peers commenting on her brother's “coffin.� Eileen is undeniably grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a rewarding organization. She will treasure the friendships made through the unifying love of music forever. Her favorite concerts every year are the Listen and Learn Concerts, or what she likes to call the Kiddie Concerts. Sadly, she cannot attend the Aloha Concert Luncheon due to her participation in the National Science Olympiad tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska. However, she will be attending UH Manoa in the fall as part of the Doctors of Medicine Early Acceptance Program and looks forward to her return as an HYS alumni.

have been a member of HYS for eight seasons. With almost one half of my life spent with the Youth Symphony, you could say I grew up with music. Thank you HYS and the conductors, especially Mr. Yamane and Mr. Masaki, for the opportunity. At Roosevelt High School, I’ve been in the Symphonic Orchestra for four years and the Marching Band (Color Guard) for two years. This year is my second season on the RHS Judo team. I’ve studied French in school for four years, placing first or second each of the first three years in the French teachers’ Le Grand Concours Examinations (awaiting the results of the year four examinations at this writing). After graduation, I will be attending the Cal State Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California, majoring in maritime mechanical engineering.

Seohyung (Anna) Cho Concert Orchestra, Violin / Kaiser High School

A

lthough it was very short year, I believe that being part of CO was a worthwhile experience. Youth Symphony has challenged my abilities and endurance as a musician and urged me to improve constantly. As a person who has just recently brushed over the world of private lessons and auditions, I was honored to be playing amongst many talented students. Expanding my range of skills and abilities through music has also influenced me to improve myself in other areas. I would like to thank Clayton, my violin teacher, Mr. Fanning, the person who opened the world of orchestra for me, and Mr. Bataluna, my current school orchestra teacher. At Kaiser High School, I am part of the newswriting staff, orchestra, math team, Key Club, and Korean Club as treasurer. This fall I will attend UCLA majoring in biology.

eing in HYS has been a great experience and I’m very grateful to have had this amazing opportunity. I have been playing percussion for nearly five years now and have been a member of CO for three. This talented group of musicians has taught me many new things that I will carry with me through my journey through life. I would like to thank Mrs. Ochi-Onishi and Mrs. Watanabe for all of their hard work and dedication to this orchestra. I would also like say a big thank you to Mr. Dinion my percussion teacher. His knowledge and encouragement have been an inspiration and made me the musician I am today. I aspire to one day be as good a percussionist as he was. Next year I plan on attending Kapiolani Community College and then plan to transfer to UH Manoa. Although my major is currently undecided I will continue playing my instrument all through college in UH marching band or UH concert band.

Darius DeSpain Youth Symphony II, Trumpet / Kalani High School

I

n my four years participating in this program, HYS has offered me many opportunities such as new friendships, increased involvement within the music community, and the experience of being in a well-organized orchestra. These opportunities also lead me to developing new skills and broadening my sense of life, these include time management to juggle my many extra-curricular activities as Captain of the robotics team at Kalani as well as multiple other bandrelated activities within school. Time management is an invaluable skill an individual needs to organize and optimize one’s day. I find it is incredibly helpful not only in school, but also in juggling work and a social life. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of HYS’s financial aid program which allows a person such as me from a low-income family to still have the opportunities to excel in life. With this knowledge and experience from HYS, I will be attending UH Manoa majoring in computer engineering where I will continue to expand my understanding of the world to one day give back to this fantastic community.

William Fong Youth Symphony I, Trumpet / Moanalua High School

B

y no means did I deserve to get into the HYS program, but I am very grateful that it happened. I am not even close to being the best musician at all, but I found something in HYS that was even better: the players. I have met some of the greatest people I know through YS and I really became close to them, even though those with such talent have every right to not talk to a guy that barely practices every week. And yet, they do, because they are extremely kind and more understanding than I really deserve. Without a program like HYS, you would never see a coming together of so many personalities from many different schools with such different levels of experience. To me, the music and the virtuosity that I find in a high-level orchestra such as this pales in comparison to the kind of people that possess that talent. I am truly blessed to have been part of a wonderful program such as this and personally, I would highly recommend HYS most for its ability to bring first-rate people together, and then for assembling students with such potential to make wonderful music.

Dylan A. Fujimoto Youth Symphony I, Trumpet / Moanalua High School

ylan has played the trumpet in HYS for five years. Starting in CO and transitioning through YSII, he has been a member of YSI since 2013. His participation in HYS has given him the opportunity to meet like-minded students from around Hawaii and to expand his musical experiences under the guidance of Mr. Miyamura. Performing with HYS has taught him the value of commitment and hard work in overcoming challenges; by striving to improve his playing in HYS, he has learned that persistence can help one to achieve any goal. Dylan has played in Moanalua High School’s Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He has also participated in the OBDA Solo and Ensemble Auditions, PMI, and the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis. Dylan plans to attend UH Manoa, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Sean Maika Harding Youth Symphony I, Violin / Le Jardin Academy

M

y parents have a picture of me at age four at a Honolulu Symphony Petting Zoo event where the musicians allow children to touch their instruments. It’s the violin that I was petting in that picture. My parents said that when I turned eight, I had to play a musical instrument in addition to sports and because it’s always been an interest of mine, I started with violin lessons in Charleston, South Carolina. My father was in the Navy and that gave me opportunities to play that most kids don’t have. I’ve played in Washington State with the Bremerton Youth Symphony and the Bainbridge Island Sinfionetta and in Georgia with the Mercer Macon Youth Symphony. The past three years with HYS have been the most rewarding. Mr. Yamane and Mr. Masaki taught me strength in playing and during the last two years Mr. Miyamura has taught me how to add life and color to notes on a page. I now play music with emotion and understand what that means. I am grateful to my teachers who have shown endless patience, to my parents who paid for lessons and spent countless hours taking me to practice sessions and events, and to the various symphony conductors I’ve played for who have poured out their hearts for us students. It’s their passion that makes it so rewarding. I’ve been accepted to HPU and plan to work on a computer science major. They have offered me scholarship to play in their symphony.

ix years of Youth Symphony proved to be an intensely exhausting yet enriching and fulfilling experience. I am proud to have been a part of such an empowering organization, where I learned the meaning of dedication and commitment and experienced the deeper emotions that encompass musicality. HYS was a major contributor that pushed me to advance in my music pursuit. I will forever cherish my memories of participating in HYS. I am grateful for all the HYS instructors and my private music teachers, Louise Ching and Kathy Hafner, who helped me to reach my musical goals. I want to thank Mr. Henry Miyamura for teaching me to perform at my highest caliber and to go “beyond, beyond.” Also special thanks to my cello buddies Eileen and Kahler for making my HYS experience interesting. In addition to participating in the HYS, I also participate in Iolani School’s Orchestra 5 and chamber music program. I will be attending Swarthmore College in the fall and plan to pursue a major in biochemistry. My single goal is to one day open up a bakery and buy a Maserati GranTurismo.

Ria Im Youth Symphony I, Violin / Roosevelt High School

I

have been in Youth Symphony playing the violin for five years. I started in CSO and made my way up to YSI. The reason I enjoy being in Youth Symphony is because I get to listen to each section of the orchestra, then the whole. I feel accomplished when the orchestra plays together for the first time after hours of sectionals. Five years in Youth Symphony has made me a stronger musician and helped me become a more respected concert mistress for the Roosevelt High School Symphony Orchestra. As for my future plans, I plan to attend University of California at Irvine. I would like to give thanks to Mr. Abe, music director and conductor for RHS, Iggy Jang, my amazing violin teacher, Mr. Miyamura for dealing with me for three years and still not being able to say my name correctly, and Mr. Wong for being a great help as my mentor for senior project. I would also like to thank my parents for supporting me through all these years, especially my dad for buying me a violin when I had no idea what it was at the time. I'm glad that I had this amazing experience of meeting new people and performing with many guest artists over the years. eing a violinist in HYS since sixth grade has been such an amazing opportunity. Through HYS, I have learned the true value of music, gaining with that a deeper sense and appreciation towards it. HYS has provided me with many opportunities to perform in various concerts. I was also introduced to a wide range of music I would never have played before. I learned first-hand how much commitment in terms of time and dedication as well as effort it takes to play in an orchestra. I want to thank Mr. Uyehara for introducing me to HYS, putting up with my many years of auditions, and helping me to enhance my musical ability. I also want to thank Mr. Yamane and Mr. Masaki for making my last years in HYS so memorable. At St. Andrew’s Priory, I am a member of Chamber Strings, Interact Club, Paddling, and Student Government. his is Rachel’s fifth year in HYS. She started percussion in Kaimuki Middle School’s sixth grade beginning band under the direction of Susan Ochi-Onishi. She joined CO in eighth grade, progressed to YSII her freshman year and to YSI her sophomore year. Rachel has also participated in OBDA’s Select Band and Solo & Ensemble Festivals. She is also a member of her school’s marching band, wind ensemble, and jazz band. HYS has helped her go beyond what she expected to learn and accomplish, and she is very grateful to be a part of such a wonderful organization. She would like to thank her family, friends, mentors, and the Youth Symphony staff for helping her grow and progress this far. Rachel will be studying psychology at the University of Oregon next school year and will continue to play music in college.

Benjamin Kim Youth Symphony I, Violin / St. Francis School

eing a part of HYS has helped me develop as a musician as well as an individual. I started my journey with HYS in the Academy Program, SOE. It was my first time being surrounded by musicians who performed at the same level as me. Having been put in such a competitive environment, allowed me to adapt to play under pressure, and refine my violin skills. While progressing from CO to YSI, I made inseparable bonds with my peers that have been with me through this seven year journey. I will greatly miss the Sunday rehearsals with my peers in where we all connect as one through music. The drive to achieve more as an individual that the youth symphony provided me with, allowed me to participate in several extracurricular activities. I have participated in band, and played varsity football and paddling. I’m also a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Tri-M. After high school I plan to attend a four-year university majoring in Computer Science. I would like to thank my violin teachers Mr. Darel Stark and Dr. Helen Liu for changing my view on playing the violin and conductors Mr. Yamane, Mr. Masaki, and Maestro Henry Miyamura for showing me what music is truly about.

laying the violin for HYS was a priceless experience. I believe that I was extremely fortunate to be able to play with the finest young musicians in the state. Although sometimes I was exhausted by long rehearsals, I really loved playing in HYS. I learned how to cooperate with others and to challenge myself. I am so thankful to everyone whom I spent time with for past four years at HYS. At Mid-Pacific Institute, I am the editor-in-chief of school magazine, officer of Math Team, founder and president of Spanish club, captain of Debate team, officer of National Honor Society, and concertmistress of the advanced orchestra. I will be attending Stanford University, majoring in economics. In the future, I want to work either in the financial world or in the information technology industry. Wherever I am in the future, however, I have no doubt that music will always be part of my life.

Christy Kiyama Youth Symphony I, Clarinet / McKinley High School

T

his has been my second year in HYS, and I truly believe that auditioning for this program was one of the best decisions I ever made. Music has always been a huge part of my life; I was nine when I learned how to play the piano. I soon grew enamored by what music could do and I started clarinet in fifth grade. I mostly stayed in band and did not explore opportunities outside of school until I began taking private lessons with Lynne Nakaura. She has taught me a lot about my instrument that I may not have learned had I just stayed in band. I am honored to have performed in this prestigious ensemble with the many talented musicians from across the island. Mr. Miyamura taught me things I will never forget, about how to collaborate in such a way as to provide true emotion to those who listen. Aside from YSI, I have also dedicated myself to many other band-related activities such as McKinley High School’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble I, Parade Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and the OBDA Select Wind Ensemble. I will be attending UH Manoa, and plan to participate in band.

Vance Kuikahi Youth Symphony II, Viola / Kamehameha Schools

B

eing a part of the HYS ohana for the past couple of years has been a big part of my life. Ever since the eighth grade, I can remember going to rehearsals almost every Sunday. Spending countless hours practicing music and perfecting it, I have gained a deeper appreciation for music. Most importantly, however, HYS has taught me discipline because after spending those countless hours in rehearsals, one would be tempted to skip one, two, or multiple rehearsals. Besides my involvement in YSII, I am a principle violist in Kamehameha School’s Sinfonietta class, the highest-level string orchestra in the school and I am a member of my school’s varsity golf team. This fall I plan to attend Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. I will be majoring in biochemistry and pursue a career in dentistry.

I

started playing percussion instruments in third grade and have been with HYS for the past two years. I am grateful for being a member of HYS. It has been one the most important parts of my high school life. I particularly enjoyed practicing and performing with passionate musicians from Hawaii. I was able to learn how to truly enjoy music in HYS. I’d like to thank all the HYS conductors and concert parents for their help. Since I didn’t attend a music high school after graduating from a music middle school in Korea, I thought I wouldn’t have another opportunity to continue music. So I’m truly thankful for the HYS experience. Although I’ll be studying pharmaceutical sciences in college, I will continue being a percussionist throughout the rest of my life.

Cody Leclere Youth Symphony I, Flute / Castle High School

I

first began playing the flute in seventh grade at King Intermediate. From the very beginning, although I was not very good, picking up my instrument has given me more joy than any toy or video game ever did. Auditioning for HYS has proven to be one of the best decisions I have made in high school. I have been with HYS since tenth grade, starting as a member of YSII and moving to YSI in my junior year. Playing under the direction of Mr. Miyamura has been an incredible honor and I am “BEYOND, BEYOND, BEYOOOOND” thankful to him for everything he has taught me. I would not be the same player I am today if it were not for his dedication and hard work. Being a part of HYS has also given me the opportunity to meet many new people and make amazing friendships along the way. I have participated in PMI, Select Band, the Morning Music Club of Honolulu “Winners Recital,” Solo and Ensemble, Flute Society of Hawaii and Castle’s marching and concert bands. After graduation, I plan to major in music at a four-year university.

Jaewoo Lee Youth Symphony I, Trumpet / Roosevelt High School

I

have been playing trumpet in YSI for the past two years. What I enjoyed most about being a member of the Youth Symphony was being able to play with fine musicians; it allowed me to create new friendships as well as grow as a musician. HYS has taught me to be hard working. Having to practice consistently and diligently was no walk in the park, but it has become the impetus of my growth and maturity; that hard work will always pay off at the end of the day. Attending Roosevelt High School, I have been principal trumpet in the concert band in 2011, co-principal in the symphonic band in 2012 and principal in 2014. I have participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festivals, and have also participated in select band. Besides music, another activity I enjoy participating in is Taekwondo. I enjoy it because it is exhilarating and it facilitates my physical well-being. Though I have yet to decide my major, I hope to widen my horizons and find myself in college.

I

began my journey in HYS in freshman year as a member of CO. Despite being unable to participate during sophomore year, I rejoined HYS as a member of YSII as a junior. Having spent this year in YSI, I feel blessed to have been able to participate in all three orchestras and practice with such talented individuals. Through my experience, I’ve learned much about patience and endurance. Despite the seemingly grueling rehearsals, I have gained a new appreciation for music. I would like to thank all HYS members for this amazing experience. After graduating, I plan to major in political science at a four-year university.

Marcus Lui Youth Symphony II, Tuba / Kalani High School

F

or those whom I haven’t had the pleasure of knowing, my name is Marcus Queng Yun Toshio Matsushima Lui, I attend Kalani High School, and for the past five years I’ve participated in HYS as a tuba player. One year in CO, and four in YSII. My first experience with an instrument was when I was about nine. I was introduced to my dream instrument. That’s right, you guessed it—the viola. Surprised? Yeah well, somewhere in middle school I was “convinced” to transform from an orch-dork into a band-geek. Fortunately, my older brother played the tuba at the time, so I already had a bit of a fascination for the lumbering metalthing—and it stuck. From there, the rest is history. The many hours of practice under the guidance of my outstanding teacher, Alan Ing has paid off; something I’m forever grateful for. So, what started for me as a viola wannabe has turned into YSII’s principal tuba; go figure. I end my years comfortably, surrounded by wonderful musicians. And although there were rough times, I’m always thankful for the fond, fantastic, and irreplaceable memories.

Robert Mastriano Youth Symphony I, Violin / Homeschool

H

YS has been providing a superb outlet for me to enjoy and make music since I first got involved in SOE six years ago. My journey through the various symphonies, SOE, CO, YSII, and finally the esteemed YSI has been a great experience that I will remember with much fondness. As I depart the Youth Symphony program I would like to express my thanks to the ever charismatic and commanding Mr. Miyamura and all the other HYS conductors, whom all deserve praise for their continued attempts to make rooms full of kids play music together and in tune. My gratitude must also go out to the concert parents of the Youth Symphony, my amazing violin teacher Duane Padilla and, of course, my parents who deserve my apologies as much as my thanks. I have been studying art at the UH’s Honolulu, Kapiolani, and Manoa campuses for the last three years and have just applied for admission to the two-year New Media Arts Animation and digital art program at Kapiolani Community College.

Sayaka Mitsui Youth Symphony II, Oboe / Kalani High School

M

usic has been the main focus of my life ever since I started playing the oboe at Kaimuki Middle School under the direction of Mrs. Ochi-Onishi. Throughout the years, I have participated in many music-related activities and festivals such as: OBDA Solo and Ensemble, Select Band, HYS, PMI, and MPulse, a music program at the University of Michigan. Through those experiences, I learned to love to play my instrument and to make music with others. The Youth Symphony program has really helped me to grow as a musician as I experienced playing in all three orchestras over the past five years. The best part of being in HYS for me was that in addition to the musical growth, it helped me to connect and share experiences with students that I would have never met if I didn’t join this program. Also, the competitiveness and the high expectations of the program taught me to never give up and keep trying. After graduating, I am attending Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. My major is not decided yet, but I plan to continue playing the oboe by taking lessons and auditioning for groups.

K

ilinoelani first joined HYS in sixth grade and has participated every year since then. As a violinist, HYS has helped her to hone her skills that she hopes to carry on to college. She has also met a lot of amazing people that helped inspire her throughout the way. She wants to give a big shoutout to her teacher, Iggy Jang-concertmaster of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra for his constant patience and support in not only music, but also her other recreational activities. It’s been a “fine” six years under his tutelage. In addition to music, Kili enjoys running cross country, working at Big Kahunas and spending time with her family and friends. Kilinoelani will attend Rice University where she will pursue a degree in biochemistry. Her dream is to one day become an emergency room physician and work internationally to help cultural minorities.

Codie Murata Youth Symphony I, Oboe / Kalani High School

T

he past four years of being with Youth Symphony, has kindled my passion for music. I cannot say it was an effortless ride, but despite all the obstacles, Youth Symphony has taught me to strive for the betterment of others and myself. I am so thankful for the HYS conductors, my oboe teacher Mrs. Susan Ochi-Onishi, my band director, Mr. Dennis Kaneshiro, and everyone who has inspired me by the amount of love and appreciation they have for music. One memory that I will always cherish from YS is playing the Capriccio Italien. There was an English horn solo and I always feared playing in front of people. Though I was afraid to play it, Mr. Miyamura did the greatest thing he could and accepted nothing less than what the music demanded. He pushed me to overcome my fear and from it I have learned the confidence and desire essential to becoming a great musician. Throughout my music career, along with YS, I have participated in Select Band, Marching Band, Solo and Ensemble, PMI, and MPulse at University of Michigan. I plan to attend the UH Manoa this fall, majoring in biology.

Aylton Nakamura Youth Symphony I, Violin / Roosevelt High School

W

hat I love about to be a member of Youth Symphony is that I have learned lots of variety of music. Most of the time it is classical, but there were two jazz pieces that I really got into. It wasn’t about making new friends and to get socialized, but building music experience so you won’t forget in your life. What I have been learning from all these years was the conductor’s words. He would point out the problems and explain them properly. The most important is discipline. Everyone needs one, because it is like a reminder for your mistake. I have been in my school’s library club for two years and I really enjoy books and communicating with the librarian. I am in the school’s orchestra and I really enjoy playing music there. After I graduate high school, I am planning to go to Kapiolani Community College and study tourism industry. I think Hawaii want lots of tourists from across the globe and I want to pursue in that industry in my life.

T

hese past four years of being a part of HYS has been a wonderful experience. I was able to forge new friendships as well as strengthening existing ones through our shared passion for the arts. Together, we were able to grow and polish our musical abilities, while developing a compassionate spirit to joyfully share the music we create to inspire and touch the lives of others. In addition to being a member of HYS, I am also a member of Kalani High School’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Marching Band. Through my involvement in HYS and school ensembles, I came to appreciate music more and learned valuable life lessons that I continue to apply in daily life. I learned to discipline myself, work together with others, have patience, and to be a perfectionist doing my best in anything I do. I learned that nothing is ever “good enough” and that you can always "go beyond, beyond, beyond, beyond" to make things better. I want to thank Uncle Lance for always making the orchestra laugh and making the grueling three hours of rehearsal bearable. Zachary Pang Youth Symphony I, Trumpet / Punahou School

I

started playing the trumpet in the third grade at Hanahau‘oli School and began lessons with Mr. Kenneth Hafner a year later. I joined CO as a ninth grader, YSII as a sophomore and then onto YSI for my junior and senior years. I enjoyed traveling to Maui and developing friendships with the other trumpet players as we hung out and roomed together. It was a privilege to have been able to share our music with the Maui students and I enjoyed their excitement when we showed them our instruments. The HYS staff was exceptional in making sure our trip ran smoothly. You folks are super! I would like to thank Mr. Miyamura for continually encouraging us to reach our highest potential. I would especially like to thank Mr. Hafner for the years of support, even on the weeks when I didn’t practice. I am currently a senior at Punahou School and enjoy tennis, lacrosse and surfing. After graduating, I plan on studying biochemistry at Loyola University, Chicago.

Lauren Park Youth Symphony I, Viola / Punahou School

I

can’t imagine what my life would be if I haven’t started playing the viola in the seventh grade and joined HYS. Being in YSI for the past three years with talented young musicians from across the state has been time consuming, but very rewarding, especially when I get to share my gift of music with others at our concerts. This past year, I’ve learned what it means to be a leader, becoming the principal of the viola section. Mr. Miyamura has challenged me to play beyond what is expected of me and taught me that music has no value if there is no heart and passion behind it. I’d like to thank Mr. Miyamura, the HYS staff, and all of the volunteers who have helped this great program thrive for the past fifty years. I’d also like to thank my viola teacher, Darel Stark, for always helping and encouraging me. Outside of HYS, I participate in my school’s symphony orchestra and volunteer in my church’s orchestra ensemble. Sarah Park Youth Symphony I, Flute / Iolani School

S

arah first picked up flute in sixth grade at Kaimuki Middle School then started lessons under Mrs. Aileen Kawakami a year later. She started off as a member of YSII in eighth grade then moved to YSI in her sophomore year. Even though HYS took countless hours of her sleep time on Sundays and homework time on weekdays, it has definitely been one of the best experiences of her high school life. The concerts and Neighbor Island trips made all the sweats and tears from the rehearsals worth it in the end. In HYS, Sarah has learned what it means to feel the music and play beyond what is printed on a white sheet of paper. Other than HYS, she has participated in Select Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival, Iolani Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Symphonic Orchestra V. She would like to thank all of the music directors, teachers, concert parents, and HYS staff who have guided her in her musical journey, and her parents for their continuous support. She would also like to thank all of her friends for the unforgettable memories they have shared through HYS. This fall, Sarah plans to study business at a four-year college.

Brent Ramos Youth Symphony I, Violin / Moanalua High School

I

have been with HYS for about nine years beginning with Summer Strings in 2005 and working my way up through the ranks to YSI in 2011. The Youth Symphony has not only helped me become a better musician, but also helped me find my passion in music. What I enjoyed most about being in HYS was being able to make music with other talented musicians from around the state. HYS gave me a chance to meet, and become friends with people from different schools and backgrounds. I am planning to attend the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a music performance major with the hopes of one day playing in a professional symphony orchestra.

Sanako Saito Youth Symphony I, Trombone / Kalani High School

I

only could attend YS for a year. I’ve never experienced orchestra before, so I was nervous at first. I learned that making good music is necessary to pay attention to the conductor and the players. People have individual personality, so playing the exact same thing is impossible. But students tried to listen and match to other students’ sounds. Mr. Miyamura showed what he wants us to play, and students understand and feel his moving, therefore our music is made. We make music between people, not with words. I’m not good at English, but even I could understand. I heard various tones from the students’ sounds. There were a weak sound, kind sound, hard sound, etc. It was very interesting. YSI helped me to improve my skills as well. In this year, I became better at playing strong and better sounds. Music is my treasure. I hope I can continue playing music, but it will just be my hobby. In the future, I may not be playing as much as I am now, but I am happy that I got many new experiences and that I was able to play a lot in this senior year with YSI students and Mr. Miyamura.

Tate Sakamoto Youth Symphony I, Trumpet / Kalani High School

T

ate has been a member of HYS for five years, one in CO and four in YSI. Tate really enjoyed being able to play with other dedicated musicians and playing challenging music. It has taught him a lot about perseverance and determination. Tate has played for Kalani’s Wind Ensemble, along with the concert orchestra, and marching band programs. He participated in the OBDA select band and select jazz band programs. Tate is currently a trumpet student of Kenneth Hafner. He has also studied with Grant Okamura. Tate plans to major in music performance at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He would like to thank Maestro Henry Miyamura, Mr. Dennis Kaneshiro, Mr. Grant Okamura, Mrs. Susan OchiOnishi, Mr. Derek Fujio, Mr. Kenneth Hafner, Mr. Steven Agasa, his family and friends, along with everyone who has supported him through the years.

Aoi Shinagawa Youth Symphony I, Flute / Kalani High School

A

lthough I complain a lot and the rehearsals are tiring, being a flutist in YSI has truly been a great experience. If I had to do it all over again, I would. In the past two years, I’ve met individuals who are just as crazy about music as I am. I’ve made new friends and reconnected with old friends. I’ve learned many things about music and about myself. I’ve learned how to play musically as well as accurately, and have constantly been challenged with music that is beyond my abilities, forcing me to practice and helping me improve my technique. I’ve also learned a lot about the kinds of pieces I enjoy playing and listening to. And most importantly, I’ve learned that music is a passion that I will never give up, no matter what obstacles stand in my way. Because of this, I have decided to study music education and political science after graduation, so that I may help others through their musical journeys, leading them beyond, beyond.

Stephanie Spear Youth Symphony I, Bassoon / Kaiser High School

F

ive years ago when I first joined HYS, I had no idea how significant of a role this program would come to play in my life. Playing bassoon in YSII for four years and YSI this past year has been an absolute privilege and I am incredibly thankful to this program for providing me with the opportunity to cultivate such amazing friendships and grow as a musician. In addition, I would like to thank my bassoon teachers Mr. Richard Hotoke and Mr. Wayne Fanning, my band director Mr. Michael Bataluna, and all the other teachers and clinicians who have contributed to my musical and personal growth. At Kaiser High School, I am a member of the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band, for which I have been the co-drum major for the past two years. I am also the Band, Class, and National Honor Society President. Next year, I plan on attending a four year university on the mainland and majoring in physics.

Jonathan Suda Youth Symphony I, Trombone / Kalani High School

I

would first like to thank all of my music instructors: Mr. Kazu Sunabe, Mrs. Susan Ochi-Onishi, Mr. Derek Fujio, Mr. Derrick Yamane, Mr. Henry Miyamura, and Mr. Dennis Kaneshiro in addition to my private teachers, Mr. Jason Byerlotzer and the late Mr. Kyle Hanki. All of you have contributed immensely to my development both as a musician and as a person. I started HYS in CO per “request” of Mrs. O. Despite this, I ended up enjoying YS and decided to stick with it resulting in my participation in YSII my freshman year and YSI the past three years. With the help of YS, I learned so much about the communicative capabilities of music as a powerful and universal form of expression. In addition to YS, I have been a member of the Kalani High School Wind Ensemble for the past three years and the Kalani “Falcon” Marching Band for the past four—holding the position of a Low Brass Section Leader for the past two. Outside of band, basketball has been another integral part of my life—playing for Kalani all four years (two years JV for Coaches Everett Frye and Noa Hussey and two years Varsity for Coach Nathan Davis) and for Ikaika Basketball Club under Coach Clay Tang since the sixth grade. I will be attending UH Manoa in the fall on a Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Kahler John Suzuki Youth Symphony I, Cello / Iolani School

K

ahler began learning cello at age ten at Iolani School and has been taking lessons from Louise Kefford Ching for eight years. He has since traveled internationally to perform, and is in his fifth year as a scholarship quartet member at Iolani. In 2013, Kahler was a winner of the Morning Music Club scholarship competition and is has been principal cello in Iolani Orchestra V for three years. Outside of cello, Kahler has played piano since preschool, and now plays percussion and horn. The last four years in HYS have become a meaningful and incomparable part of Kahler’s career as a musician. When he was accepted into YSI as a freshman, Kahler could not predict the number of opportunities with which he would develop his musicianship and networking. Working with high-level students from other schools not only encouraged Kahler to practice harder and pursue a superior standard of playing, but also helped him make lifelong friendships with fellow musicians, both under- and upper-classmen. Playing alongside them locally and on tour to the neighbor islands has granted Kahler unforgettable memories. He would like to thank Mr. Miyamura, the HYS staff, volunteers, and all his colleagues for making his experience in YSI truly enjoyable. Kahler will study cello performance at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University starting this fall.

Charissa Tan Youth Symphony II, Viola / Mid-Pacific Institute

P

laying viola in YSII this past season of HYS has been uncomfortable, yet rewarding. All my previous experiences in an orchestra or symphony setting had been on violin, so viola was definitely a new challenge. The first rehearsal was terrifying. Adjusting to the bigger, heavier instrument while trying to keep up with the music, written in a different clef, and playing in a section with only nine other people was extremely frustrating. As I struggled through that long practice, I wondered how I could survive an entire season of, what I thought at the time, torture. But as the weeks went on, I found myself becoming more accustomed to my new role and eventually actually enjoying it. After graduating, I plan to study biology at a university, which will hopefully lead to a career in the medical field. This presents a challenge on a bigger scale, but like the transition from violin to viola, I trust that despite the initial hardship, the experience will help me to strengthen and succeed.

Kashmira Tata Youth Symphony II, Violin / Sacred Hearts Academy

I

have been a member of the Youth Symphony for seven years, starting with CSO. I have played the violin since I was four and have had several teachers. I have most enjoyed being exposed to amazing repertoire, such as Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. I have learned to listen closely to the other instruments and to follow my conductors. This has taught me to work with others, which will be useful throughout my life. I have participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festival for many years and have competed in the HMTA competition for the past three. Violin and school take up the majority of my time, so when I’m not practicing I’m usually studying. Every Saturday I volunteer at Manawale‘a Riding Center in Waimanalo, which is a horse ranch for disabled children. I also frequently help out at the Hawaii Kai and Aina Haina public libraries. I have been accepted into the University of Colorado at Boulder’s College of Music. I will study with Prof. Charles Wetherbee, the concertmaster of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. I plan to major in violin performance and may study music education later. I hope to play professionally in a symphony as well as to teach privately.

Marc Teshima Youth Symphony I, Tuba / Kalani High School

I

have been a part of the HYS, playing the tuba for all four years of my high school career. My first year, placed in YSII under the direction of Mr. Derrick Yamane, has inspired me to take an interest in orchestral music which led me to continue in this program. The following year, I was placed into YSI with the privilege to study under Mr. Henry Miyamura. The past three years with Mr. Miyamura has been amazing. Each year he sets a high standard and expects us to not be just a regular high school orchestra; he constantly asks for our full effort throughout weekly rehearsals. One of the things that I learned is that it is much more complicated than just playing the notes on the piece of sheet music; we must comprehend and portray the work as a whole and understand what the composer has intended. Mr. Miyamura stresses that it would be a disservice to us if he let us miss the little details of each piece. It is the little details that separate us from being just a satisfactory high school orchestra. Aside from HYS I am the principal chair of the Kalani High School Wind Ensemble and I also participate in marching band where I hold a leadership position. I would like to thank my tuba instructor Mr. Daniel Asao, and all of the HYS conductors for helping me throughout the years. I plan to attend a four-year college where I will study pre-physical therapy in the fall.

Matthew Uchida Youth Symphony I, Violin / Homeschool

M

atthew, who has studied violin under Ms. Sheryl Shohet since the age of five, has participated in HYS for the past nine seasons. Beginning in CSO and progressing to YSI, Matthew has gained countless memorable opportunities and experiences. Matthew appreciates HYS assisting him in developing his character, providing him with friendship opportunities, and giving him a greater appreciation for music. Moreover, he is grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from incredible instructors, and play with such talented peers. Many thanks to Mr. Miyamura for his patience and guidance over the past four years. In addition to HYS, Matthew, although home schooled, is also actively involved in the Punahou Army JROTC program. Following graduation, Matthew will attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Kisa Uradomo Youth Symphony I, Violin / King Kekaulike High School

T

he past four years spent traveling back and forth from Maui to Oahu has been quite the journey. Despite the seemingly endless hours spent at the airport, Youth Symphony I was definitely worth every second. YSI taught me to push myself to become a better musician and extend my love for music to those who listened. I am forever indebted to Mr. Miyamura and everyone who’s a part of the HYS staff because they provided me with an incredible education that cannot be replaced. The knowledge I gained through HYS has helped me achieve many of my musical aspirations such as winning the Kamuela Philharmonic Concerto Competition and my acceptance into the National Youth Orchestra where I will be touring China this summer. HYS has also taught me the importance of music education in the community so I plan to study Violin Performance and Music Education at the Eastman School of Music in order to build a stronger music program on Maui. Just as HYS has done for me, I also want to provide music to students despite their financial backgrounds in pursuit to spread the gift of music to younger generations.

David Whitehouse Youth Symphony II, Trombone / Iolani School

D

avid Whitehouse is finishing his third year in YSII, and his sixth year playing the trombone. Aside from his YSII commitment, David has also been a member of Iolani’s Band since he arrived in the eighth grade, and the principal trombonist for Iolani’s Symphonic Orchestra 5 for three years. He has also been known to sing barbershop with The Sounds of Aloha, and he has spent a great deal of time on stage in Iolani’s annual Spring Musicals. He would like to thank Jason Byerlotzer for his instruction and friendship, Katherine Hafner for believing in him, his parents for doing their thing, Dane Takayama for his friendship and Mr. Yamane for his passion. He plans to attend Wesleyan University in the fall.

Zarek Wong Youth Symphony II, Bassoon / Roosevelt High School

I

really can’t believe how fast this year of YSII has come and gone. Although I have only been a member of Youth Symphony for two years, what a ride it has been. Being able to play the bassoon with so many other distinguished young musicians has been such a wonderful experience for me. I never imagined that I would be able to become a part of such a distinguished group. I am grateful to Youth Symphony for giving me this opportunity and Mr. Yamane and Mr. Masaki for being such wonderful conductors. I’ll never forget those concerts at Kawaiahao Church and playing Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 finale. Youth Symphony has helped me to grow both as a person and a musician by challenging me to play much tougher pieces than what I play in school. Other than YSI, I have taken lessons from my bassoon teacher Mr. Hotoke for seven years, and have spent this year learning Calculus BC. Currently I hope to go to college, the college not being decided yet. I plan to major in mathematics and become a mathematician. I would also like to continue to enjoy music in some form in the future as well.

Athena Zhao Youth Symphony I, Viola / Punahou School

W

hen I committed to moving to Hawaii this year, I also committed to joining the Hawaii Youth Symphony I as a violist. It has been a tiring Sunday pastime, but I am grateful for the passion that Mr. Miyamura, the concert parents, and all of my fellow orchestra members have for the pieces we play. I first began my music career with the violin when I was three, participating in the Eugene-Springfield Youth Symphony and the Oregon All State Orchestra, and in my sophomore year I decided I would branch out and try the viola. I also danced ballet with the Hawaii Ballet Theatre in the Nutcracker and play violin in the Punahou Symphony Orchestra. After graduation I plan on moving to Scotland and attending the University of Edinburgh to study in the Honors Philosophy and English Literature program.
