In June, the Hawaiian Humane Society partnered with the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center to host an outreach event, Pet Kokua, that offered free microchipping, spay/ neuter certificates, pet food and free health checks. Educators held hourly talk story sessions sharing tales of real-life rescues from the area and teaching pet parents how to ensure their pet is happy and healthy. Joined by students from the Windward Community College Veterinary Technician program, representatives from VCA Hospitals and volunteers from Apple, the pop-up event drew hundreds of pet owners. The Society is also spearheading disaster readiness for pet owners in the area, which is vulnerable to floods. In the last year, Hawaiian Humane prepared to open disaster shelters for pets three times due to storms in these coastal areas. The Society wants pet owners to be
educated and ready in the event of a natural disaster. In the not so distant future, the Hawaiian Humane Society plans to open a second campus in Ho‘opili on the Ewa plain thanks to a very generous land gift from D.R. Horton. The organization is diligently planning for a center for animals that will meet needs of West Oahu. Until then, the Society will continue its work to provide services from its main campus in Honolulu. “The Society is a vibrant part of our community,” says James Campbell Company Executive Vice President, Timothy J. Brauer. “It has found a lot of creative ways to get services to this side of the island.”
For years, the Hawaiian Humane Society’s people-pet teams have been regular visitors at care homes in Makaha, Waianae and Kapolei where they bring joy in the form of a cold nose and furry face to patients. Weekly pet adoption events at petco Ewa Beach have found homes for hundreds of animals, as have the adoption events at Schofield and with PetSmart in Mililani. Education programs in the area are about to get a big boost with service learning classes, teen training camps and more partnerships with local schools. “Nanakuli High and Intermediate School’s Student Council plan to partner with the continued on page 3

Good news on an old issue Abandoning animals is nothing new in Hawaii. In fact, I was recently glancing through historical newspaper archives from the Pacific Commercial Advertiser. In the early 1900s, Hawaii’s daily newspaper reported monthly about “animals abandoned and left to die.” That was how such cruelty was termed at the turn of the century and it certainly captures the simple truth: Abandoned animals are left to die. In February 1901, the news reported that 37 animals were discovered in such situations. While the numbers and stories of animal abandonment don’t often make headlines in modern times, it’s an issue that has persisted. Recently two dogs were reported abandoned on the North Shore. A tourist saw the dogs and rescued the animals but sadly, they could not be saved. We could not let these dogs die in vain and immediately opened an investigation, found the owner and charged her with abandonment and cruelty. She could face up to $4,000 in fines and possibly prison time. People abandon their pets for many reasons. More often than not, it’s a people problem. The bond between people and pets break due to a wide variety of issues such as lifestyle changes, financial hardship, divorce or moves. Sometimes, the animals develop behavioral issues that pet parents simply can’t cope with. And so these owners release them to the streets. Pets, domesticated animals, rely completely on their owners for care, sustenance and love. These dependent creatures are not equipped to survive by themselves
and face injury, starvation, dehydration and danger when abandoned. Abandonment is cruel and a crime. In our care, a pet given up by an owner can transform into a cherished companion animal to another loving family. Hawaii’s Penal Code of 1850 outlawed intentional infliction of pain on animals and in 1884, King Kalakaua amended that law to include even more protection for animals. Since then, Hawaiian Humane Society has continued to advocate for the strengthening and passage of laws to protect animals at the legislature. This past year, we worked diligently to pass a law that increased the penalties for animal abandonment. We were able to apply the new law to the case of the North Shore dogs. In fact, the owner of the two dogs was charged so soon after the new law passed that we did not even have a statute number to reference. It is my greatest hope that you will join us in ending the number of animals abandoned and left to die. Now is the time for this to be an issue of yesteryear.

“We hope to make a difference by reaching out to our friends and neighbors at future community events and sharing information about proper pet care with all the animal lovers on the Leeward Coast.” These schools are following in the footsteps of veterans like Campbell High School, which is preparing to host its fifth annual Pause for Paws & Pet ID fair in response to its community’s issue of stray animals on the streets.
It’s partnerships like these that harbor the greatest potential, according to Hawaiian Humane. “If we can instill compassion, hope and action in youth, we can influence the entire family from keiki to kupuna. Empowering people will truly change the world for animals,” says Humane Educator Shayna Vi, who is championing the Society’s youth education movement in West Oahu.

Joy Ambassadors bring cheer to patients The Hawaiian Humane Society’s “Joy Ambassadors” have been spreading cheer to hospitals, hospices, senior care homes and schools islandwide for more than 30 years. In June, pet visitation teams traveled to Kahuku Medical Center to bring joy to patients of all ages. Eight patients and their families enjoyed the comfort of canine visitors during the two-hour stay. Children from Kahuku, Laie, Hauula and Sunset Beach also came to the event to meet the people-pet teams. “The event was wonderful,” said Brooklyn Saunders, recreational therapist for Kahuku Medical Center. “It was such a joy to see the ambassadors with the patients and residents. It’s hard being so far away in the country. We don’t get opportunities like this on a regular basis.” Long-time members of the pet visitation program, Carolyn Inouye and her dog Geena celebrated their 20th anniversary of bringing joy to hospital patients. When Geena began volunteering, she was a young
pup who bounded through hospital hallways with her tail enthusiastically wagging back and forth at high speed. Today, the years have caught up with Geena and she prefers to be carried by Inouye when they volunteer together at Kuakini Medical Center. It also increases emotional well-being and social interaction.” Inouye knows firsthand as she and Geena have visited Kuakini’s geriatric ward faithfully every week for nearly two decades. One patient
in particular is a withdrawn woman who refuses to speak with anyone except with Geena. “She talks to Geena and asks her what she did that day and what she ate as if Geena is another person,” Inouye said. It is these breakthroughs that she finds so rewarding. Hawaiian Humane Society is opening its program to new partners islandwide. The program is also seeking new Joy Ambassador teams. Older pets offer love and companionship November is senior pet month, but the Hawaiian Humane Society encourages the public to consider adopting a senior pet throughout the year. As an incentive, people 60 years and older who adopt a cat or dog age six years and older can have the adoption fees waived. Not only does “Seniors for Seniors” save on adoption fees, but often an older pet is a good fit for an older pet owner, as Charlotte Farrell found out when she adopted a seven-year-old pup she named Lili from the Moiliili campus in June.

As Farrell describes the enjoyment she has felt since she adopted Lili, it becomes clear that they were the right match for each other. “I think she adopted me,” Farrell said lovingly of her lucky animal companion.
Farrell was not looking for an older dog when she visited the Hawaiian Humane Society in June. She had gone without a dog for three years after her previous dog of 15 years passed away. To get her “dog fix,” she would come to the Moiliili campus to visit the animals there. But one day while she was near the adoption counter, she noticed Lili and immediately felt a connection.
Older pets are often overlooked at animal shelters in favor of puppies and kittens. But there are advantages to adopting an older pet. As was the case with Lili, older pets may come with some training and understand basic commands. They may be calmer and easier to manage than energetic younger animals and demonstrate cute antics picked up along their life’s journey, as Lili does. Farrell said that she didn’t have to guess how large Lili would grow because at seven years old, Lili had long reached her adult size.
Adoptions representative Valerie Palumbo was there when Farrell first laid eyes on Lili. “They loved each other at first sight,” Palumbo said. Farrell asked if she could interact with Lili directly, and the adoptions staff was happy to accommodate her. The rest, as they say, is history. The two have been together ever since. Farrell said that everyone in her family who has met Lili thinks that she is adorable. And because

Tips to keep your pet happy and healthy Many people take precautions when caring for their pets. They make sure to get the proper vaccinations, use heartworm and flea treatments every month and give their pets ample playtime. Sometimes, there are little things that don’t seem to be a big deal, but can be unhealthy for a pet.

Praising pets for a job well done. Coming home to find a puddle on the floor is never fun. Owners often have the urge to shout at pets to scold them. Animal behavior experts say this strategy does not work. Dogs or cats aren’t able to connect the scolding with a past incident. A better strategy is to praise pets right away when they do their business where they’re supposed to.
Cats need a well-balanced diet. Vegetarians sometimes want to share their lifestyle with their pets. What many don’t realize is that cats are true carnivores and have unique nutritional needs. The American Association of Feline Practitioners says that if these requirements are not met, it can cause cats to have a variety of illnesses – such as heart disease and more. Dogs may be able to handle a well-balanced vegetarian diet, but check with a veterinarian first. Multiple litter boxes for multiple cats. Felines can be picky about their litter box. If it’s dirty or smells like other cats, they may not use it. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there should be one box for every cat in the home, plus one extra.
Help pets beat the Hawaiian heat “Owners especially need to be cautious with their pets in peak hours, especially on hikes with little to no shade,” said Dr. Kristin Levins, a veterinarian at the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center of Hawaii. “This year I saw several dogs that had heat stroke from hiking that could have been entirely prevented.” Be sure

Outdoor activities such as hiking, jogging and playing fetch are among the most common causes of heat exhaustion in animals. When participating in these activities with your pet, keep a close eye on him and look out for signs that your pet is overheating: excessive panting, dark or bright red tongue and gums or staggering. If your pet is exhibiting any of these signs, get him to a shady spot as soon as possible and place cool water on his chest, belly and feet until you can get him to a veterinarian.
Another cause of heatstroke for pets is leaving them in a parked car. Before you take off with your dog or cat, remember that leaving your pet in the parked car – even for 10 minutes – could prove fatal. According to a study published in Pediatrics journal, incar temperatures can reach 123 degrees in one hour on an 80 degree day. Call 911 if you see a pet in danger. Take down a license plate number to try and track down the owner if the car is parked. 6

Before this year, crimes that involved animals were lumped into an “All Other Offenses” category in the FBI’s annual “Crime in the United States” report. The FBI is working with a focus group that is looking into ways to assist Humane Investigators, Animal Control Officers and others who are charged with looking into or reporting animal cruelty incidents for a local municipality or county jurisdiction.

From a golf course to a grand life It was a warm summer day in July when Roberta WakisakaFellezs noticed something out of the ordinary at Leilehua Golf Course. A dog was lying under a tree, seemingly content and at home on the fairway. She would later learn the dog’s name was Leila. Wakisaka-Fellezs asked the staff and workers about Leila and learned that she was known as the resident dog and had lived at the golf course for nearly five years. Well-fed by employees and golfers at Leilehua and wary of humans, Leila was a master at eluding capture. The staff just let her be
since the dog didn’t bother anyone.
Leila was reported missing and had been living at the golf course for years before being rescued before she was rescued and adopted by the Wakisaka-Fellezs family.
Over the course of a few weeks, WakisakaFellezs couldn’t stop thinking about Leila and would visit the dog during her trips to the golf course. She could see that Leila’s condition was slowly deteriorating, with patches of missing fur and blackened skin. “I began to feel sorry for her,” said WakisakaFellezs. “I kept thinking about how lonely she was at night all

Lost dog finds love on Leileihua Golf Course continued from page 8
by herself. I saw that she was being well fed, but I knew she needed a home. “ Wakisaka-Fellezs decided to take action and called the Hawaiian Humane Society to intervene. Since the golf course was located on military property, humane investigators needed to work with Military Police for a plan of action. The Society’s Officer Ling remembers the day well. “Leila had a hard time trusting people. She had been on her
own so long that it was hard to lure her in.” After days of attempting to capture her, Leila was finally rescued by Officers Ling and Church. “I was so relieved when I received that call,” Wakisaka-Fellezs recalled happily. “I knew that this would be a new beginning for Leila. Officer Ling took Leila back to the Hawaiian Humane Society where she was assessed by staff veterinarians. She was found to have significant skin issues and an eye condition 9
called entropion, which is when a portion of the eyelid is folded inward. Wakisaka-Fellezs volunteered to foster Leila and pay for all veterinary care. “After a few days of having Leila, my husband was attached and the feeling was mutual,” WakisakaFellezs laughs. “The decision to adopt came pretty quickly.” Today, Leila is thriving. She happily trots up to visitors to say hello and due to surgery on her eyes, she can see them without tearing. Leila loves being an indoor dog and can often be found snoozing with her family.

Party time for pets The holidays are a time for gathering with friends and families. For some pets, parties or overnight visitors can be stressful, so plan ahead to keep animals safe and make the experience less worrisome for everyone.
four-legged family member may make a break for it out the door and become lost. Identification tags and microchips reunite families. Make sure pets have proper identification with your current contact information – particularly a microchip with up-to-date, registered information. That way, if they do sneak out, they’re more likely to be returned. If pets are not microchipped, visit a veterinarian or Hawaiian Humane for this simple procedure.
Visitors can upset pets. Some pets are shy or excitable around new people or in crowds and Thanksgiving often means many visitors at once with higher-than-usual noise and activity levels. If dogs or cats are nervous around people, put her in another room or a crate with a favorite toy. This will reduce the emotional stress on pets. If your pet is particularly upset by houseguests, talk to a veterinarian about possible solutions to this common problem.
Watch pets around festive decorations. Special holiday displays or candles are attractive to pets as well as people. Never leave them alone in an area with a lit candle; it could result in a fire. Pine cones, needles and other decorations can cause intestinal blockages or even perforate an animal’s intestine if eaten.
Watch the exits. Even if pets are comfortable around guests, make sure they’re watched closely, especially when people are entering or leaving the home. While welcoming guests, a
